AB - In this paper, the effects of the addition of silicon nitride seeds on the phase composition, particle size, and shape of silicon nitride powders obtained by carbothermal reduction-nitridation were studied. Environmentally friendly natural raw material, diatomaceous earth, was used as a Si precursor. Three different carbon sources were used: activated carbon, carbonized sucrose, and carbon cryogel as reducing agents in the molar ratio C/SiO2 = 5. To obtain better-quality Si3N4 powder, the commercial α-Si3N4 powder was added into starting mixtures as seeds in four different quantities. The X-ray diffraction, specific surface area, infrared spectroscopy with Fourier transform, and scanning electron microscopy were employed to characterize the obtained powders. Sucrose as a carbon source enables a major reduction of SiO2 and the onset of β-Si3N4 crystallization at a lower temperature (1350 °C) as well as the complete absence of diatomaceous earth relics. It indicates that the carbothermal reduction-nitridation takes place faster in contrast to the other two carbon sources.

AB - Effect of methyl methacrylate (MMA) as a binder and heating treatment were investigated to improve green alumina compacts machinability. Properties of green compacts and their corresponding sintered samples prepared with and without MMA were compared. Investigation of green and sintered properties was performed on samples compacted at applied pressures up to 150 MPa. After pressing, samples with MMA were thermally treated at 115oC. The intention was to enhance the polymerization of MMA at a temperature a little higher than the glass transition temperature (Tg = 103oC) of poly (methyl methacrylate). Green compacts with MMA had higher green density values than those without MMA. Sintered samples with MMA had lower values of sintered density and higher values of total porosity; after sintering, relative linear shrinkage was around 15 % for the whole range of applied pressures. The possibility of easily machining the green compacts with MMA produces great possibilities for application in many fields

AB - Mullite and mullite–alumina ceramics materials with dominance of the mullite phase are used in different areas of technology and materials science. Porous mullite ceramics materials can be used simultaneously as refractory heat insulators and also as materials for constructional elements. The purpose of this work was to investigate the WO3 nanoparticle influence on the evolution of the aluminum tungstate and zircon crystalline phases in mullite ceramics due to stabilization effects caused by different microsize ZrO2 and WO3 . The use of nano-WO3 prevented the dissociation of zircon in the ceramic samples with magnesia-stabilized zirconia (MSZ), increased porosity by approximately 60 ± 1%, increased the intensity of the aluminum tungstate phase, decreased bulk density by approximately 1.32 ± 0.01 g/cm3 , and increased thermal shock resistance by ensuring a loss of less than 5% of the elastic modulus after 10 cycles of thermal shock.

AB - In present study FEAL-LDH@SIO2 were Used for removing phosphate from aqueous solutions. FeAl-LDH with molar ratio Fe/Al = 3/1 was synthesized by co- precipitation from aqueous solutions in the present of SIO2 PARTICLES. Silica obtained from rice husks were used as a substrate for the deposition of LDH particles. The prepared material was characterized by scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2 adsorption/desorption isotherms (BET method) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). XRD analysis showed that Fe-Al had formed LDH structure. SEM analysis revealed deposition of LDH particles on SIO2 SUBSTRATE. The adsorption characteristics for phosphate uptake of the obtained material were performed. Adsorption experiments were carried out as a function of LDHs dosage with three different mass ratios of LDH/silica = 1/1, 2/1, and 3/1 and different phosphate concentration AT INITIAL PH 4. Phosphate concentrations were determined using spectrophotometer. The results showed that the maximum sorption capacities of phosphates calculated based on Langmuir equation was 52.68 mg g-1.

AB - The present work represents hydrogel as a composite based on sodium alginate and mesoporous SBA-15. The hydrogel was obtained by modifying mesoporous SBA-15 by a microencapsulation method of the SBA-15 in the sodium alginate matrix. The solution of CaCl2 provided a gelation complex of sodium alginate/SBA-15 in a rigid gel-like structure. The sodium alginate/SBA-15 hydrogels beads of about 3 mm diameter were prepared. Composite material was characterized by using powder X- ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray analysis. This composite material may have potential application in removal of metal ions – pollutants from aqueous solutions.

AB - In the synthesis of silicon nitride (Si3N4) based powders by carbothermal reduction-nitridation of diatomaceous earth, the effects of addition of silicon nitride powder on the phase composition, particle size and shape were investigated in this paper. Activated carbon was used as carbon sources. In order to obtain better quality Si3N4 powder in a faster and more efficient way, α-Si3N4 powder was introduced into starting mixtures as seeds. The starting mixtures of diatomaceous earth, carbon source and commercial α-Si3N4 powder (5,10,15 and 20 wt.%) were thermally treated at 1350 °C and 1450. X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared spectroscopy with Fourier transform (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were employed to characterize the phases, functional groups, microstructure of the obtained powders. The major reduction of diatomaceous earth took place at 1450 °C. At 1350 °C particles retained the morphological characteristics of the starting diatomaceous earth. At 1450 °C, observed particles possess a polygonal habitus, which is characteristic for silicon nitride crystals.

AB - Mesoporous silica renders chemical and mechanical stability under biological conditions, but due to its physicochemical properties, could be potentially harmful to exposed cells. The aim of the current study was to estimate SBA-15 (concentration of 50, 100 and 250 µg/mL) impact on human peripheral blood mononuclear cells to induce cyto- and genotoxicity in vitro after 72 h treatment, as well as lipid peroxidation in serum samples ex vivo. SBA-15 mesoporous silica treatment impact on cell viability was performed by XTT assay, lipid peroxidation was estimated by determining malondialdehyde and 4-hydroxyalkenals levels and genotoxicity by micronucleus assay. SBA-15 treatments displayed genotoxic potential at the lowest concentration, while highest tested concentration led to decrease of cell viability and increase of lipid peroxidation. Chemical modification of SBA-15 material that could influence its physicochemical properties could be useful way to lower its toxicity.

AB - The template method synthesis of both SBA-15 materials with elongated and spherical particles was performed using a surfactant Pluronic P123. The HCl (p.a.) was used to synthesize material with elongated particles connected in chain structures grouped into shapes resembling sheaves of wheat. In the synthesis of spherical SBA-15 with diameters ranging from 0.5 to 2 μm, a spent HCl solution which was obtained after chemical treatment of clay was used where the dominant presence of the spheres was confirmed by the SEM method. In addition to the methods mentioned above, XRD, EDS and FTIR methods characterize SBA-15 materials.

AB - To obtain the titania (TiO2) nanoparticles, the conventional sol-gel method under acidic conditions, pH around 2, was employed. After synthesis, the obtained powder was calcinated at 500 and 700 °C. The X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed that the heat-treated powder at 500 °C was anatase phase, while the heat-treated powder at 700 °C was the mixture of anatase and rutile phase. The crystallite size of the anatase phase at 500 °C was 15 nm whereas at 700 °C crystallite size of the anatase was 47 nm and 63 nm for the rutile phase. The characteristic FE–SEM images revealed well distributed spherical shaped nanoparticles. An average diameter of nanoparticles was in the range of 20 – 30 nm. The average size of nanoparticles in the sample treated at 500 °C was lower than the nanoparticles in the one treated at 700 °C. Therefore, the specific surface area of synthesized pure TiO2 after heat treatment at lower temperatures is higher, promising better absorption and photocatalytic activity.

AB - The synthesis of SBA-15 material with spherical particles is performed by the template method by using only a surfactant Pluronic P123 under acidic conditions. In the synthesis of SBA-15 with spherical particles, an HCl solution was used after specialised chemical treatment of clay purification. The dominant presence of the spheres with diameters up to around 2 μm was confirmed by the scanning electron microscopy(SEM) method. In contrast, the Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(EDS) confirmed that the spheres consisted only of SiO2 in composition. In addition to the methods mentioned above, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR) methods were used to characterise SBA- 15 materials. Application of HCl solution after chemical treatment of clay purification represents the application of technology in the synthesis of spherical SBA-15.

AB - The clay minerals deposit from the mining basin Kolubara, Serbia, is a natural sediment material with high economic potential in many fields. The chemical composition of starting clay determined by inductively coupled plasma spectrometry shows that its main composition of SiO2 is 88.00 wt.%. Organic impurities from clay have been removed by heat treatment at 600 °C for 2 h in air. After thermal treatment, an aqueous solution of HCl sedimentary mineral was chemically treated. Surface properties of starting clay and thermally and chemically treated clay (treated clay) were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and particle size distribution method. The XRD analyses of the starting and treated clay confirmed that quartz is a significant phase, followed by the appearance of feldspar and smectite clays. The SEM method showed impressively layered microstructure on various magnifications for both groups of investigated materials. The average particle diameter value for starting clay was about 23 μm and about 53 μm for treated clay. These methods showed that the starting clay changed the surface properties during thermal and chemical treatment, resulting in the merging of clay layers.

AB - The study of an effect of iron doping on the structural, microstructural and mechanical properties of sintered iron-doped mullite is presented. The results of phase composition, performed in detail by Mössbauer spectroscopy and XRD analysis, revealed that all added iron was inside the mullite lattice forming the single phase up to 12% by weight of Fe2O3 and 1300 °C. Samples, which were processed at 1550 °C, contained secondary phases, hematite or magnetite, regardless of the amount of added iron. Furthermore, the addition of iron decreases the values of relative linear shrinkage comparing to the values of undoped one (~18%) while the densities of the sintered samples rise as well as their values of microhardness. Even though the density values were not too high (90 TD%), the obtained values of microhardness were excellent, 1634 HV0.1 for maximum iron content due to the characteristic mullite microstructure.

AB - The structural and morphological properties of iron-doped mullite powders are the subject of the present study. The powders of undoped and iron-doped mullite in the composition range of 3–15 wt% Fe2O3 were synthesized by a combination of sol-gel and combustion methods. The excess of water and urea were introduced in reaction solutions to enhance the copolymerization of aluminum and silicon species. The results of structural characterization revealed that the synthesized mullite powders were amorphous of a hybrid type. The specific surface area of the undoped mullite powder was 262 m2 g-1 with a maximum pore radius (dp) of 2 nm classifying it into mesoporous materials. The addition of iron has reduced the specific surface area, while the pore size value remained the same except for the sample with 3 wt% Fe2O3 (SBET = 278 m2 g-1; dp = 3 nm). The presence of iron caused lowering the temperature of liquid phase formation, while present urea combusted providing the increase of the temperature locally that caused the sintering and formation of agglomerates of smaller particles. However, the results of the particle size analysis are not straightforward. The values of mean volume diameter (D[3,4]) indicated that the particle size increased to 6 wt% Fe2O3 (123.6 μm), and then decreased and for the sample with 12 wt% Fe2O3, it was equal to 96.6 μm. Thus, the added iron contributed to the more uniform particle size distribution. The SEM analysis has also shown the coarse powder particles consisted of the coalesced smaller particles. © 2020 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l.

AB - Macroporous silica ceramic was obtained using clay and diatomite. Boric acid as a low-cost additive in the amount of 1 wt% was used. These porous materials were obtained at low forming pressure (40-80 MPa) and lower sintering temperature (850-1300 ºC) for 4h in air. The influence of boric acid, forming pressure, and sintering temperature on the microstructure, porosity parameters, and mechanical properties of obtained porous monoliths were investigated. As-received and the modified samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, FTIR, SEM, and mercury porosimetry measurements. As for modified clay and diatomite, they were pressed at 60 MPa and then sintered at 1150 ºC, obtaining porosities of about 10 % and 60 %, respectively. Both of the analyzed samples had the pore diameter in the range of macroporous materials. The pore diameters of clay samples are ranging from 0.1-10 μm, whereas the pore diameter of diatomite samples was slightly lower with values ranging from 0.05-5 μm. Modified diatomite samples have a lower Young modulus in comparison to modified clay samples.

AB - Diatomaceous earth is of sedimentary origin consists mainly of accumulated skeletons formed as a protective covering of the diatoms. Usually, high absorption capacity of diatomaceous earth provides its wide use as heat insulation, filter and absorbent material. Starting raw material diatomaceous earth from surface coal mine Kolubara, Serbia, was characterized using, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD). Chemical composition of diatomaceous earth was determined by wet chemical methods. In addition, the absorbed gamma ray dose rates is estimated based on the measured activity concentrations of natural radionuclides in clay were determined by gamma spectrometry. This research shows that this material is environmentally safe for further use.

AB - Investigated the possibility of using methyl methacrylate (MMA) as an acrylic binder in the preparation of ceramic powder of alumina for pressing with the intention of improving machinability of alumina flakes. Compared the properties of the green bodies and the properties of their corresponding sintered samples that are prepared with and without acrylic binder. The achieved higher density of green bodies with MMA (2.35 g/cm3) compared to green bodies without MMA (2.11 g/cm3) were formed under the optimal pressure of 60 MPa, indicating the improved packing of alumina powder with addition of acrylate. In the case of sintered samples, the porosities were increased, and the density and percentage of linear shrinkage were reduced. It has been shown that machining of green bodies, prepared with MMA, can be produced in the form of complex ceramic products of alumina like a screw with a nut and with great possibilities of commercial application.

AB - Investigations of the high-pressure sintered nanocrystalline mullite powder are presented. The synthesized mullite powder with crystallite size of 51 nm was densified by using high-pressure anvil-type with hollows apparatus at 4 GPa over the temperature range of 1100-1500 degrees C in 100 degrees C steps. The phase composition and structural parameters of the densified samples were studied as a function of densification temperature. The XRD analysis revealed the appearance of new phases, such as kyanite and corundum, whose development affected the densities of the sintered samples. High relative densities of the sintered samples were obtained because of the application of high pressure. The needle-like microstructure was developed owing to the anisotropic grain growth of mullite. The elongated mullite grains reached the length of approximately 5 mu m at 1400 degrees C, whereas the grains treated at 1500 degrees C became thicker preserving the same needle length. The Vickers microhardness of the developed microstructures increased with the increase of temperature up to 1400 degrees C, while at 1500 degrees C it was slightly reduced due to the grain coarsening. AB - Porous silica ceramics were obtained at low forming pressure (40-80 MPa) and low sintering temperature (850-1300 degrees C) for 4 h in air. Boric acid was used as a low-cost additive, in the amount of 2 wt%. Relatively high porosities of nearly 40% and 65% are obtained for the samples of clay and diatomite pressed at 40 MPa, and sintered at 1000 degrees C, respectively. The samples sintered at 1150 degrees C and 1300 degrees C have the average pore size diameters in the range of macroporous for clay 0.2-10 m and for diatomite 0.2-5 m. X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and mercury porosimetry measurements were employed to characterize of the obtained samples. Measurements of densities and open porosities by immersion technique were used, according to the Archimedes principle. The relations between mechanical characteristics of the samples formed by using different pressures and sintered at different temperature, were discussed.
