AB - The existence and stability of spatial solitons in one-dimensional binary photonic lattices with alternating spacing and a saturable defocusing type of nonlinearity are investigated. Five types of nonlinear localized structures are found to exist: two in the mini-gap in the energy spectrum and others in the regular gap. It is proved that some of them are stable in certain ranges of the system parameters. Interactions between two identical localized structures propagating parallel to each other are investigated, too. It is shown that this interaction leads to formation of different localized patterns, such as solitons, breather-like modes, and breather complexes. The interaction output depends on the power and type of interacting identical solitons, the separation between them, the width of the mini-gap, and the phase relation between the tails of interacting solitons.

AB - We investigate linear and nonlinear light propagation at the interface of two one-dimensional homogeneous waveguide arrays containing a single defect of different strength. For the linear case and in a limited region of the defect size, we find trapped staggered and unstaggered modes. In the nonlinear case, we study the dependence of power thresholds for discrete soliton formation in different channels as a function of defect strength. All experimental results are confirmed theoretically using an adequate discrete model. (C) 2011 Optical Society of America

AB - Photovoltaic photorefractive binary waveguide arrays are fabricated by proton implantation and selective light illumination on top of an iron-doped near stoichiometric lithium niobate crystal. Linear discrete diffraction and nonlinear formation of gap solitons were investigated by single-channel excitation using Gaussian light beams coupled into either wide or narrow waveguide channels. The results show that, at low power, linear light propagation leads to discrete diffraction, whilst for higher input power the focusing mechanism dominates, finally leading to the formation of gap solitons in the binary waveguide arrays. Our simulation of light propagation based on a nonlinear beam propagation method confirms the experimental findings.

AB - Light propagation in one-dimensional nonlinear waveguide arrays with self-defocusing intensity-resonant nonlinearity is investigated theoretically. We study thoroughly conditions for existence and stability of both gap and discrete dark solitons. According to the linear stability analysis both fundamental types (on-site and intersite) of gap solitons may be stable. Discrete dark solitons are unstable except in the low-power regime and, depending on system parameters, evolve into either gray solitons, breathers, or background radiation. Mobility of these solitons is analyzed by the free energy concept: gap solitons are immobile but dark solitons can be easily set in motion.

AB - We report on a new method to form reconfigurable channel waveguides in lithium niobate crystals, based on a combination of low-dose O3+ ion implantation and selective white light illumination. The fabricated structures show low loss as well as rather high resistivity against optical erasure with red or infrared light, while at the same time reconfiguration of the structures remains possible using homogeneous white light illumination. The transmission properties of the channel waveguide modes can be well simulated numerically by the beam propagation method, which allows for the fabrication of tailored optical interconnections. AB - We experimentally investigate the interaction of counterpropagating discrete solitons in a one-dimensional waveguide array in photorefractive lithium niobate. While for low input powers only weak interaction and formation of counterpropagating vector solitons are observed, for higher input powers a growing instability results in discrete lateral shifting of the formed discrete solitons. Numerical modeling shows the existence of three different regimes: stable propagation of vector solitons at low power, instability for intermediate power levels leading to discrete shifting of the two discrete solitons, and an irregular temporal dynamic behavior of the two beams for high input power.

AB - Localized vectorial modes, with equal frequencies and mutually orthogonal polarizations, are investigated both analytically and experimentally in a one-dimensional photonic lattice with defocusing saturable nonlinearity. It is shown that these modes may span over many lattice elements and that energy transfer among the two components is both phase and intensity dependent. The transverse electrically polarized mode exhibits a single-hump structure and spreads in cascades in saturation, while the transverse magnetically polarized mode exhibits splitting into a two-hump structure. Experimentally such discrete vector solitons are observed in lithium niobate lattices for both coherent and mutually incoherent excitations.

AB - We demonstrate the existence of nonlinear Tamm oscillations at the interface between a substrate and a one-dimensional waveguide array with either cubic or saturable, self-focusing or self-defocusing nonlinearity. Light is trapped in the vicinity of the array boundary due to the interplay between the repulsive edge potential and Bragg reflection inside the array. In the special case when this potential is linear these oscillations reduce themselves to surface Bloch oscillations. (c) 2007 Optical Society of America.

AB - We report on the formation of dark discrete solitons in a nonlinear periodic system consisting of evanescently coupled channel waveguides in defocusing lithium niobate. Localized nonlinear dark modes displaying a phase jump in the center that is located either on-channel (mode A) or in-between channels (mode B) are formed, which is to our knowledge the first experimental observation of mode B. By numerical simulations we find that the saturable nature of the nonlinearity is responsible for the improved stability of mode B. The ability of the induced refractive index structures to guide light of a low-power probe beam is demonstrated.

A phase insensitive interaction of the beams is achieved by means of counterpropagating light waves. Partial and full reflection (blocking) of the probe beam on the positive or negative light-induced defect is obtained, respectively, in good agreement with numerical simulations.

AB - Modulation instability and pattern formation by spatially incoherent light is investigated experimentally in a nonlinear ring cavity using a photorefractive strontium barium niobate crystal as the nonlinear medium. A step-like threshold for the onset of pattern formation is observed experimentally for the case of high optical feedback. When compared to the case without feedback, this threshold is shifted towards smaller nonlinearities and a significant increase of the modulation degree of the obtained patterns is obtained. Our measurements also show that, above threshold, the dominating spatial frequency of the patterns decreases monotonically with both increasing nonlinearity and increasing feedback.

AB - The interaction between two parallel beams in one-dimensional discrete saturable systems has been investigated using lithium niobate nonlinear waveguide arrays. When the beams are separated by one channel and in phase it is possible to observe soliton fusion at low power levels. This result is confirmed numerically. By increasing the power, solitonlike propagation of weakly coupled beams occurs. When the beams are out-of-phase the most interesting numerically obtained result is the existence of oscillations which resemble the recently discovered Tamm oscillations.

abstract = "The interaction between two parallel beams in one-dimensional discrete saturable systems has been investigated using lithium niobate nonlinear waveguide arrays. When the beams are separated by one channel and in phase it is possible to observe soliton fusion at low power levels. This result is confirmed numerically. By increasing the power, solitonlike propagation of weakly coupled beams occurs. When the beams are out-of-phase the most interesting numerically obtained result is the existence of oscillations which resemble the recently discovered Tamm oscillations.",

AB - Discrete modulational instability within the first band of uniform one-dimensional waveguide arrays possessing a saturable self-defocusing nonlinearity is investigated in detail within the coupled mode approach. Explicit analytical results for both the threshold and the maximal gain of instability are compared with the corresponding data from waveguide arrays exhibiting Kerr nonlinearity. We find that saturation bounds the interval of existence of discrete modulational instability, stabilizes the frequency region of perturbations around +/-pi/2 and decreases both gain and critical spatial frequency of perturbations. AB - We investigate, experimentally and theoretically, light propagation in one-dimensional waveguide arrays exhibiting a saturable self-defocusing nonlinearity. We demonstrate low-intensity “discrete diffraction”, and the high-intensity formation of spatial gap solitons arising from the first band of the transmission spectrum. The waveguide arrays are fabricated by titanium in-diffusion in a photorefractive copper-doped lithium niobate crystal, and the optical nonlinearity arises from the bulk photovoltaic effect.

AB - Theoretical results on spatial optical bright solitons excited in arrays of nonlinear defocusing waveguides, that result from the photovoltaic effect in a photorefractive material, are presented. The existence of four types of stationary discrete bright staggered solitons, on-site, inter-site, twisted inter-site, and twisted on-site solitons, is shown both analytically and numerically, and their stability properties are investigated. The maximum Hamiltonian of staggered solitons with the same total power corresponds to stable modes. It is shown that for low total power the on-site mode is stable while in the high power regime the inter-site mode is stable. These results are confirmed numerically. In addition, steering properties of localized modes are investigated by introducing a transversal translational shift. Because of the translational symmetry between on-site and inter-site localized modes they are considered as two dynamical realizations of the same moving mode, and the formalism of the Peierls-Nabarro effective potential is applied to interpret the exchange between trapping and steering of these modes. This critically depends on the modes total power and the introduced phase difference. On the other hand, steering of twisted inter-site and on-site localized modes is not numerically observed. Instead, transversal perturbation leads to a transformation of twisted modes either into a trapped on-site mode of smaller power and radiation, or into two trapped on-site modes.

AB - Dynamical properties of discrete solitons in nonlinear Schrodinger lattices with saturable nonlinearity are studied in the framework of the one-dimensional discrete Vinetskii-Kukhtarev model. Two stationary strongly localized modes, centered on site (A) and between two neighboring sites (B), are obtained. The associated Peierls-Nabarro potential is bounded and has multiple zeros indicating strong implications on the stability and dynamics of the localized modes. Besides a stable propagation of mode A, a stable propagation of mode B is also possible. The enhanced ability of the large power solitons to move across the lattice is pointed out and numerically verified.

AB - The influence of long-range interactions on the stability of stationary solutions of triangular lattices described by the continuum-discrete nonlinear Schrodinger equation is analyzed. By virtue of the linear stability analysis and a variational approach we demonstrate that both soliton array and continuous-wave solutions are modulationally unstable. Analytical expressions for instability thresholds and growth rate spectra are presented and compared with the corresponding results in the approximation of a nearest neighbor interaction.

AB - A problem of pulse propagation in a homogeneous nonlinear waveguide array with saturable nonlinearity is studied. The corresponding model equation is the discretized Vinetskii-Kukhtarev equation with neglected influence of diffusion of charge carriers. For periodic boundary conditions, exact homogeneous and oscillating stationary solutions are found. A wide instability region of the homogeneous, array-independent solution is identified. An approximate analytical solution for the bright one-dimensional discrete soliton where the energy is concentrated mainly in a few waveguides is obtained. The soliton stability is investigated both analytically and numerically and a cascade nature of the saturation mechanism is revealed.
