AB - Magnesium titanate ceramics were prepared by reactive spark plasma sintering (SPS) at 1200 °C for 5 min. Prior to sintering, MgO and TiO2 powders were mixed by high energy ball milling (HEBM) for 15, 30, or 60 min. The effect of milling time on phase composition was analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) for milled powders and sintered specimens. The morphology of the sintered ceramics was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), while elemental distribution was determined by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The presence of the MgTi2O5 phase was detected in XRD and was confirmed by EDS analysis. Microcracking was observed for specimens prepared with longer milling times and attributed to the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) mismatch dominantly due to the anisotropic crystal structure of MgTiO3 phase. The sample milled for 15 min showed the highest Vickers hardness due to less or no microcracking and nearly full density. The dielectric measurements in the range of 10 Hz–250 MHz demonstrated extremely high dielectric permittivity, as high as 104 at 1 kHz. An increase in loss tangents was observed due to oxygen vacancy formation, which was promoted by the vacuum environment during SPS. Oxygen vacancy-related dielectric relaxation was also detected and explained.

AB - Ceramic/polymer composites can be chemically stable, mechanically strong, and flexible, which make them candidates for electric devices, such as pressure or temperature sensors, energy storage or harvesting devices, actuators, and so forth. Depending on the application, various electrical properties are of importance. Polymers usually have low dielectric permittivity, but increased dielectric permittivity can be achieved by the addition of the ceramic fillers with high dielectric constant. With the aim to enhance dielectric properties of the composite without loss of flexibility, 5 wt% of BaTiO3-Fe2O3 powder was added into a polyvinylidene fluoride matrix. The powder was prepared by different synthesis conditions to produce core/shell structures. The effect of the phase composition and morphology of the BaTiO3-Fe2O3 core/shell filler on the structure and lattice dynamics of the polymer composites was investigated. Based on the results of the thermal analysis, various parameters of ceramic/polymer composites were determined. Differences in the phase composition and morphology of the filler have an influence on the formation of various polyvinylidene fluoride allomorphs and the degree of crystallinity. Furthermore, the dielectric performances of pure polyvinylidene fluoride and the polymer/ceramic composites were measured.

AB - Perovskite ceramic material based on MgTiO3 is used in various types of electronic devices owing to its dielectric properties, high dielectric constant, and low losses. These features can be tailored by setting preparation conditions. Densification of magnesium titanate by Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) was the aim of this work. First, the mechanical activation in the highenergy ball mill was applied on the powder of MgO-TiO2 mixed in mole ratio 1:1. Prepared powder mixtures, activated for different times, were SPS sintered, at 1200 o C with a heating rate of 100o C/min. After reaching the desired temperature, a uniaxial pressure of 50 MPa was applied, and dwelled at this condition for 5 min, followed by cooling to room temperature at 5o C/min. The starting powders, activated mixtures, and sintered ceramics bodies were investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The presence of the MgTi2O5 phase was noticed for the nonmilled ceramics. In the samples obtained from milled powders, MgTi2O5 was detected in EDS spectra in a lower amount, below the threshold of the XRD method. Dielectric measurements were performed at a wide range of frequencies and temperatures. The highest value of the hardness was obtained from powder milled for 15 min before SPS.

AB - Refractory devices composed of ceramics are employed wherever there is contact with molten metals as in crucibles filters, furnaces or systems for flow control. The mechanical properties of these materials are very different from metals. The presentation focuses on basic equations related to thermal and mechanical transmission conditions across an interface between two different materials. These equations are linked to the development of material instabilities and crack propagation within the ceramics, in the view of application to refractories operating at high-temperature conditions in steel plants.

AB - Mixtures of high purity powders of 50 mass% Fe, 4 mass% Pb, 3 mass% Zr and 43 mass% BaTiO3 were activated in a rotary ball mill for durations ranging from 30 min to 300 min; samples were then sintered in the air atmosphere for 2 hours at 1200 °C. Crystal structure prediction has been performed using Bond ValenceCalculation (BVC) method. Moreover, theoretical stability of theperovskite structure for synthesized and calculated Fe/Pb/Zr-co- doped barium titanatecompounds has been investigated using the Goldschmidttolerance factor (Gt) and global instability index (GII).It was observed that magnetization of the system decreased after the sintering, with the most dramatic drop of 90.11% belonging to the sample activated for 150 min. In comparison with initial powders, X-ray powder diffractiondata confirmed the presence of newphases of BaFe 12 O19 and Ba1.696 Ti0.228 O3 in sintered samples. Utilizing the field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), it was found that with the increase of activation time the morphology of the samples progressed from irregural, spherical grains to mostly rod-like ones. Energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis identified the presence of Pb and Zr occupying the same locations on the surface of sintered samples, whilst Fe was uniformly deployed regardless of the activation time.

AB - Solid-state reaction between BaTiO3and Fe2O3was used to produce a multiferroic heterostructure composite. Commercial BaTiO3and Fe(NO3)3•9H2O were suspended in ethanol for 30 minutes in an ultrasound bath. The prepared mixture was thermally processed at 300°C for 6 h. Sintering at 1300 °C for 1 h resulted in a mixture of different phases, BaTiO3, BaFe12O19and Ba12Ti28Fe15O84, which were confirmed by x-ray powder diffraction. A dense microstructure with a small volume fraction of closed porosity was indicated by the scanning electron microscopy, while a homogeneous distribution of Fe ions over BaTiO3phase was visible from energy dispersive spectroscopy mapping. Doping of BaTiO3with Fe2O3resulted in formation of magnetic hexaferrite phases, as confirmed by dielectric measurements that showed a broadened maximum of the permittivity measured as a function of temperature. © 2021 Authors. AB - The increase in the utilization of ceramic/polymer composites as components for electric devices is mainly based on their high chemical stability, mechanical strength, and flexibility. The polymers usually have poor dielectric performances. In order to increase the dielectric permittivity, ceramic fillers with high dielectric constant have been used as active fillers, and usually in large amounts, which have a detrimental effect on the mechanical properties of the composite. With the aim to enhance the dielectric properties of the composite without loss of polymer’s flexibility, 5 wt.% of BaTiO3/Fe2O3 core/shell powders, prepared by different synthesis conditions, was added into the PVDF matrix. The effect of the phase composition and morphology of the starting BaTiO3/Fe2O3 core/shell filler on the crystal structure and lattice dynamics was investigated. Based on the results of the thermal analysis, TG/DSC, various parameters of ceramic/polymer composites were determined. We were able to corroborate that differences in the phase composition and morphology of BaTiO3/Fe2O3 core/shell filler have an influence on the formation of various PVDF allomorph modifications, as well as the level of crystallinity. The dielectric performances of the pure PVDF and polymer/ceramic composites were measured. An enhancement in the dielectric permittivity and decrease in the loss tangent were revealed.

AB - Iron oxide, in the form of magnetite (MG)–functionalized porous wollastonite (WL), was used as an adsorbent for heavy metal ions (cadmium and nickel) and oxyanions (chromate and phosphate) removal from water. The porous WL was synthesized from calcium carbonate and siloxane by controlled sintering process using low molecular weight submicrosized poly(methyl methacrylate) as a pore-forming agent. The precipitation of MG nanoparticles was carried out directly by a polyol-medium solvothermal method or via branched amino/carboxylic acid cross-linker by solvent/nonsolvent method producing WL/MG and WL-?-APS/MG adsorbents, respectively. The structure/properties of MG functionalized WL was confirmed by applying FTIR, Raman, XRD, Mössbauer, and SEM analysis. Higher adsorption capacities of 73.126, 66.144, 64.168, and 63.456 mg g -1 for WL-?-APS/MG in relation to WL/MG of 55.450, 52.019, 48.132, and 47.382 mg g -1 for Cd 2+ , Ni 2+ , phosphate, and chromate, respectively, were obtained using nonlinear Langmuir model fitting. Adsorption phenomena were analyzed using monolayer statistical physics model for single adsorption with one energy. Kinetic study showed exceptionally higher pseudo-second-order rate constants for WL-?-APS/MG, e.g., 1.17–13.4 times, with respect to WL/MG indicating importance of both WL surface modification and controllable precipitation of MG on WL-?-APS. © 2019, Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature.

AB - Alumina-based compounds have many technological applications and attract great attention even after decades of investigation, due to their good chemical, electrical, and mechanical properties. A mixture of several alumina modifications (α-, κ-, γ-Al2O3) doped with 1 wt% of Mn2O3 was used for this experiment. The powder was mechanically activated for 60 min in an ethanol medium. After compaction, green bodies were sintered in the temperature range from 1200 to 1400 °C. Microstructures of the obtained specimens were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The influence of morphological changes on electrical and mechanical properties was examined in detail. We have developed a test fixture and corresponding software for measurement of the relative dielectric permittivity and the loss tangent of ceramic specimens. This new method overcomes the problems of dimensions and shape of samples, as well as the problem of applying silver paste. The accuracy is around 2% for ε'r and 0.003 for tanδ. We demonstrate that the mechanical activation (MA) has the dominant influence on lowering the characteristic temperatures and microstructure development, which further leads to increased permittivity and tensile strength.

AB - The paper presents results of the influence of mechanical activation of shungite, a carbon-mineral rock material rich in silica and carbon, on its sintering behaviour, and obtaining of pure SiC ceramics. The mechanical activation of the starting powder was performed in a high-energy ball mill in time intervals from 30 to 480 min. The phase composition of the starting powders and sintered samples was analysed by the X-ray diffraction method. The first traces of SiC were detected after sintering at 1350 °C for 2 h in an Ar atmosphere, along with traces of unreacted SiO2. The scanning electron microscopy was performed in order to determine changes in the microstructure. Sintering was performed at various temperatures for 2 h, in an Ar atmosphere and a vacuum. Dielectric properties of the sintered samples were measured in the frequency range from 1 to 500 MHz. The obtained results indicate that the sintered powder is a good candidate for applications as an absorber of electromagnetic waves in microwave engineering. © 2019 University of Novi Sad, Faculty of Technology. AB - In this study, porous macro- and micro-cellular wollastonite-based ceramics was synthesized. A ceramic precursor, methylhydrocyclosiloxane, together with micro-sized CaCO3, was used as a starting material. After 20 min of ultrasound treatment, and calcination at 250 degrees C for 30 min, different pore-forming agents were added to the as-obtained powders. Differential thermal analysis was used to determine characteristic temperatures of processes occurring within powders during heating. Based on the obtained results, the sintering regime was set up. The prepared mixtures were pressed into pallets and sintered at 900 degrees C. During the sintering regime, porous wollastonite-based ceramics was obtained. The phase composition of the sintered samples, as well as the microstructures, were analyzed by using X-ray diffraction and SEM. A two-phase system was detected in all samples, CaSiO3 wollastonite and Ca2SiO4 larnite, and their ratio varied with each pore-forming agent. It was observed that the addition of different pore-forming agents resulted in significantly different microstructures. In a batch test, the influence of pH, the contact time and the initial ion concentration on the adsorption efficiency of As+5, Cr(+6)and phosphate ions on the synthesized adsorbents were studied. Time-dependent adsorption is best described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Weber-Morris model, which predict intra-particle diffusion as a rate-controlling step of the overall process. High adsorption capacities, 21.93, 23.88, and 27.29 mg g(-1), were obtained for the CaCO3-siloxane-nanocellulose sorbent, and similar/lower capacities were obtained for the CaCO3-siloxane-PMMA and CaCO3-siloxane-cotton wool adsorbents.

AB - The structural characteristics of polymer nanocomposites with functionalized multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) in poly(methyl methacrylate) matrix have been studied in relation to nanofiller loading and surface functionality. Different functional groups have been covalently attached on the MWCNTs sidewalls in order to induce interfacial interactions at nanofiller/polymer interface, which resulted in an improved nanomechanical features. Structural properties of nanocomposites, studied with XRD and Raman analysis, indicated the most pronounced decrease in a degree of amorphousness for samples containing 0.5 and 1 wt% of MWCNTs functionalized with dapsone (dapson-MWCNT) and diethyl malonate (dem-MWCNT). SEM and TEM micrographs confirmed improved dispersibility of the MWCNTs modified with aromatic structure of dapsone inside PMMA matrix. A significant increase in a glass transition temperature of over 60 degrees C has been found for the 1 wt% dapson-MWCNT nanocomposite. Additional modification of dapson-MWCNT by further increasing aromaticity and voluminosity of attached moiety (fid-MWCNT), showed 30 degrees C increases in a glass transition temperature at 4 wt% of nanofiller loading, which is similar to shift of 37 degrees C with loading of MWCNTs modified with ester terminal group. A maximum increase of 56% of reduced modulus and 86% of hardness was obtained for 1 wt% loading of dapson-MWCNT nanofiller. (C) 2016 Society of Plastics Engineers

AB - Cordierite 2MgO+2Al2O3+5SiO2 is frequently used ceramic material, that is commonly used as a carrier of electrical components due to its low dielectric constant (~ 5), and low temperature thermal expansion coefficient (20•10-7 ºC-1). In order to accelerate the process of sintering, 5.00 mass% TeO2 was added to the starting mixtures. System was tested in two parallel mixtures, one with no added additives, and the other one with TeO2. The mechanical activation of the both mixtures was performed in a high-energy ball mill in time intervals from 0 to 40 min with ball to powder mass ratio 1:40. The particle size analysis (PSA) was employed in order to determine the changes in the particle size of the mechanically treated powders. The phase composition of the starting powders as well as microstructures was analyzed by the means of X-ray diffraction method and SEM.

abstract = "Cordierite 2MgO+2Al2O3+5SiO2 is frequently used ceramic material, that is commonly used as a carrier of electrical components due to its low dielectric constant (~ 5), and low temperature thermal expansion coefficient (20•10-7 ºC-1). The phase composition of the starting powders as well as microstructures was analyzed by the means of X-ray diffraction method and SEM.",

AB - Since cordierite, 2MgO center dot 2Al(2)O(3)center dot 5SiO(2) (MAS), is a very useful high-temperature ceramic material, it is important to decrease its sintering temperature. In order to accelerate the process of sintering, 5.00 mass% MoO3 was added to the starting mixtures. The mechanical activation of the starting mixtures was performed in a high-energy ball mill in time intervals from 0 to 160 min. After the activation, starting mixtures were sintered at 1300 A degrees C for 2 h. In order to determine the impact of mechanical activation on particle size distribution and powders morphology, the mechanically treated powders were characterized by a laser light-scattering particle size analyzer and scanning electron microscopy. The phase composition of the starting mixtures and sintered samples was analyzed by the X-ray diffraction method. In order to determine temperature intervals of chemical reactions and phase transitions, differential thermal analyses (DTA) and thermo-gravimetric analysis were used. Kissingers equation was employed to calculate apparent activation energies of various processes that occur within the system during heating. Based on the obtained DTA results, it was established that mechanical activation along with MoO3 additive has influence on sintering temperature which was decreased for more than 100 A degrees C, comparing to the literature data.

AB - The aim of this study is to explore the influence of the processing route on the structural and physical properties of bulk MgTiO3 ceramics. Commercially available MgO and TiO2 powders were mechanically activated in a planetary ball mill. Green bodies were formed by an isostatic pressure of 300 MPa. The sintering of these samples was done either by the Two-Step Sintering (TSS) approach or by conventional pressureless sintering followed by Hot Isostatic Pressing (post-HIPing). The first set of compacts was sintered by TSS in air at 1300 degrees C for 30 min and the next step was performed at 1200 degrees C for 20 h. The density of the obtained samples after the two-step sintering reached almost 90% of the theoretical density (%TD). The second set of compacts was sintered at 1400 degrees C for 30 min in air. The samples without open porosity were post-sintered by the HIP at 1200 degrees C for 2 h in an argon atmosphere at a pressure of 200 MPa. The density significantly increased up to 96%TD. The differences between samples prepared by these two techniques were also analyzed by XRD and SEM. The lattice vibration spectra were obtained using Raman spectroscopy and they indicate a high degree of lattice disorder, as well as high values of the oxygen vacancy concentration. Electrical characteristic were established in the frequency range from 10 kHz to 10 GHz. The choice of the processing route had considerable influence on structural and physical properties of MgTiO3 ceramics. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. All rights reserved.

AB - Fire protection coatings on steel constructions for outdoor conditions on the basis of organic solutions have been analyzed. The first layer of coating is corrosion protection, alkyd paint „PROTHERM STEEL PRIMEPOX“ manufactorer „ITALVIS PROTECT“ Italy. The second layer of coating is an expanding coat for outdoor conditions „PROTHERM STEEL (EXT)“ solvent-bazed, „AMONNFIRE“ Italy. The third layer is final colors for metal „AMOTHERM STEEL TOP PU SB“ „AMONNFIRE“ Italy. XRD, DTA/TG and FTIR methods were used for sample characterization. It was found that primary and outer layer had very good adhesion. The second layer, for fire protection possesses 2.5 mass % humidity, which resulted in decrease of adhesion. XRD and FTIR analysis showed that those materials are adequate materials for fire protection up to 1000°C. Principles of fire protection are based on chemical reaction that are taking place in the temperature range 400-700°C.

AB - Commercially available ZnO powder was mechanically activated in a planetary ball mill. In order to investigate the specific surface area, pore volume and microstructure of non-activated and mechanically activated ZnO powders the authors performed N-2 physisorption, SEM and TEM. Crystallite size and lattice microstrain were analyzed by X-ray diffraction method. XRD patterns indicate that peak intensities are getting lower and expend with activation time. The reduction in crystallite size and increasing of lattice microstrain with prolonged milling time were determined applying the Rietvelds method. The difference between non-activated and the activated powder has been also observed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). XPS is used for investigating the chemical bonding of ZnO powder by analyzing the energy of photoelectrons. The lattice vibration spectra were obtained using Raman spectroscopy. In Raman spectra some changes along with atypical resonant scattering were noticed, which were caused by mechanical activation. (C) 2015 Published by Elsevier B.V.

AB - Due to its characteristics, cordierite, 2MgO center dot 2Al(2)O(3)center dot 5SiO(2), is a high-temperature ceramic material of a great scientific interest. Mechanical activation of the starting mixtures containing 5.00 mass% TiO2 was performed in a high-energy ball mill for 10 minutes. The compaction pressure varied from 0.5 to 6tcm(-2) (49-588 MPa). The sintering process was performed at 1350 degrees C for four hours in the air atmosphere. The phase composition of the activated and sintered samples was analyzed using X-ray diffraction. Scanning electron microscopy was used to analyze the microstructure of both compacted and sintered samples. The authors have investigated the influence of compaction pressure on the sintered samples and their electrical properties.

AB - Cordierite, 2MgO•2Al2O3•5SiO2 (MAS), is high-temperature ceramic material. Cordierite is commonly used material because of outstanding electrical properties, low temperature expansion coefficient and low dielectric constant. In order to accelerate the process of sintering, 5.00 mass% MoO3 has been added to the starting mixtures. The mechanical activation of the starting mixtures was performed in a high energy ball mill during 0-160 minutes. All starting mixtures were sintered at 1100°C, 1200°C and 1300°C for 2h. The particle size analysis (PSA) was employed in order to determine the changes in the particle size of the mechanically treated powders. The phase composition of the starting powders was analyzed by the X-ray diffraction method. Differential thermal (DTA) and thermogravimetric (TG) analysis were used in order to determine characteristic temperatures within the system during heating. Based on the obtained DTA results, it was established that mechanical activation with additive MoO3, has influence on decreasing sintering temperatures for about 150°C.
