AB - Activated carbons with high specific surface area (even above 2000 m(2) g(-1)) and pronounced microporosity are prepared in two-stage process involving conventional carbonization of waste hemp fibers and subsequent activation by potassium hydroxide. Samples with considerably different surface and intrinsic micro-and mesoporous properties are obtained at different carbonization and activation conditions. The improvements of the capacitive properties are found upon increase in carbonization temperature, since it considerably influenced the specific surface area and the content of surface oxygen groups. Cyclic voltammetry experiments reveal the dependence of specific capacitance on the sweep rate due to the characteristic porous structure of the samples. The highest measured value in 1 M H2SO4 solution is 122 F g(-1). The electrochemical impedance data indicates eight-branch transmission line equivalent electric behavior of activated carbons. AB - Titania nanofillers were used to reinforce nanofibers in composite mats produced by electrospinning of poly(vinyl butyral) with two different concentrations of polymers. The titania nanoparticles and titania nanotubes were added into an acetic acid/ethanol solution in different contents of 3 and 1wt%, respectively. The effect of the processing system on the morphology of the produced fibers was analyzed. The antimicrobial poly(vinyl butyral) composite fibers with titanium dioxide nanoparticles and titanium dioxide nanotubes were produced by single and multineedle electrospinning systems. This study reports fabrication of composite nanofibrous mats with significant mechanical and antimicrobial properties at a high production speed, which is promising for commercial applications (health care, photocatalysis, protective clothing, etc.). The reported result revealed an outstanding correlation between values of elastic modulus derived from nanoindentation and dynamic mechanical techniques. Copyright (c) 2017 John Wiley and Sons, Ltd.

AB - The structural characteristics of polymer nanocomposites with functionalized multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) in poly(methyl methacrylate) matrix have been studied in relation to nanofiller loading and surface functionality. Different functional groups have been covalently attached on the MWCNTs sidewalls in order to induce interfacial interactions at nanofiller/polymer interface, which resulted in an improved nanomechanical features. Structural properties of nanocomposites, studied with XRD and Raman analysis, indicated the most pronounced decrease in a degree of amorphousness for samples containing 0.5 and 1 wt% of MWCNTs functionalized with dapsone (dapson-MWCNT) and diethyl malonate (dem-MWCNT). SEM and TEM micrographs confirmed improved dispersibility of the MWCNTs modified with aromatic structure of dapsone inside PMMA matrix. A significant increase in a glass transition temperature of over 60 degrees C has been found for the 1 wt% dapson-MWCNT nanocomposite. Additional modification of dapson-MWCNT by further increasing aromaticity and voluminosity of attached moiety (fid-MWCNT), showed 30 degrees C increases in a glass transition temperature at 4 wt% of nanofiller loading, which is similar to shift of 37 degrees C with loading of MWCNTs modified with ester terminal group. A maximum increase of 56% of reduced modulus and 86% of hardness was obtained for 1 wt% loading of dapson-MWCNT nanofiller. (C) 2016 Society of Plastics Engineers

AB - A method for the preparation of efficient TiO2/multi-wall carbon nanotubes nanocomposite photocatalysts by precipitation of anatase TiO2 nanoparticles onto differently oxidized carbon nanotubes is presented. The precursor compound titanium(IV) bromide was hydrolyzed producing pure anatase phase TiO2 nanoparticles decorated on the surface of the oxidized carbon nanotubes. The oxidative treatment of the carbon nanotubes influenced the type, quantity and distribution of oxygen-containing functional groups, which had a significant influence on the electron transfer properties, i.e., the photocatalytic activity of the synthesized nanocomposites. The results of C.I. Reactive Orange 16 photodegradation in the presence of all the synthesized nanocomposites showed their better photocatalytic activity in comparison to the commercial photocatalyst Degussa P-25. AB - The supercritical. CO2 method was used in order to perform deagglomeration and improve the dispersion of nano-SiO2 particles. gamma-Methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane was used as the surface modification reagent. The conventional method for coating nano-SiO2 particles was used as the comparison method. Considerable improvement of the dispersion and deagglomeration was found using supercritical CO2. Analysis of the TEM micrographs and DLS results showed the reduction of the average size of the agglomerates with the silane coupling reagent. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) showed that the particles treated in supercritical CO2 were more thermally stable than particles treated by conventional method. Encapsulation of several particles coated with the silane coupling reagent was observed in certain parts of the primary particles. A chemical reaction takes place between the modification reagent, MEMO silane, and active hydroxyl groups on the surface of the nano-SiO2 particles. A larger quantity of MEMO silane reacted using the conventional method instead of the supercritical method. On the other hand, the reacted silane molecules were better arranged around the particle surface in the supercritical. method because of the formation of covalent or self-assembled structures. Polycondensed structures were preferentially obtained in the conventional method. This was achieved by using supercritical CO2, which has a high solvating power such as organic solvents and physical properties (low viscosity, low surface tension and high diffusion coefficient) similar to gases on the other side. These properties enable the sufficient and uniform wettability of nano-SiO2 particle surfaces. These results are important for obtaining nanofillers with improved dispersion and polymer wettability. Such nanofillers can be used to obtain composite materials with considerably improved mechanical characteristics.
