AB  - In the present study we investigated the interaction between 12-tungstophosphoric acid (WPA) and graphene oxide (GO) in their nanocomposite by utilizing the loading of WPA as an intrinsic parameter for interaction tuning. The Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, temperature-programmed desorption, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, zeta-potential measurements, thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy methods revealed that ∼5–13 wt% of WPA represents critical loading that separates two distinct contributions to GO-WPA interaction. This was explained by the self-limiting nature of GO-WPA interaction, initially controlled by high dispersion of WPA on GO (up to 13 wt%), that is eventually overpowered by WPA-WPA interaction as loading increases. As a result, the WPA agglomerates are being formed because of which the hybrid character of the nanocomposite diminishes, i.e., the properties of independent components start to be manifested to greater extent. The obtained results provide an important framework for considering possible outcomes in other 2D-0D systems, whose interaction is relevant both from fundamental and applicative point of view. Thus, the GO/WPA nanocomposite illustrates how the interactions between the components can be used for tuning the properties of nanocomposite as a whole. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd

The effect of ball milling on properties of sintered manganese-doped alumina

AB  - Alumina-based compounds have many technological applications and attract great attention even after decades of investigation, due to their good chemical, electrical, and mechanical properties. A mixture of several alumina modifications (α-, κ-, γ-Al2O3) doped with 1 wt% of Mn2O3 was used for this experiment. The powder was mechanically activated for 60 min in an ethanol medium. After compaction, green bodies were sintered in the temperature range from 1200 to 1400 °C. Microstructures of the obtained specimens were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The influence of morphological changes on electrical and mechanical properties was examined in detail. We have developed a test fixture and corresponding software for measurement of the relative dielectric permittivity and the loss tangent of ceramic specimens. This new method overcomes the problems of dimensions and shape of samples, as well as the problem of applying silver paste. The accuracy is around 2% for ε'r and 0.003 for tanδ. We demonstrate that the mechanical activation (MA) has the dominant influence on lowering the characteristic temperatures and microstructure development, which further leads to increased permittivity and tensile strength.

AB  - Taking advantage of the flexibility of the apatite structure, nano- and micro-particles of hydroxyapatite (HAp) were doped with different combinations of rare earth ions (RE3+ = Gd, Eu, Yb, Tm) to achieve a synergy among their magnetic and optical properties and to enable their application in preventive medicine, particularly diagnostics based on multimodal imaging. All powders were synthesized through hydrothermal processing at T ≤ 200 °C. An X-ray powder diffraction analysis showed that all powders crystallized in P63/m space group of the hexagonal crystal structure. The refined unit-cell parameters reflected a decrease in the unit cell volume as a result of the partial substitution of Ca2+ with smaller RE3+ ions at both cation positions. The FTIR analysis additionally suggested that a synergy may exist solely in the triply doped system, where the lattice symmetry and vibration modes become more coherent than in the singly or doubly doped systems. HAp:RE3+ optical characterization revealed a change in the energy band gap and the appearance of a weak blue luminescence (λex = 370 nm) due to an increased concentration of defects. The “up”- and the “down”-conversion spectra of HAp:Gd/Yb/Tm and HAp:Gd/Eu powders showed characteristic transitions of Tm3+ and Eu3+, respectively. Furthermore, in contrast to diamagnetic HAp, all HAp:RE3+ powders exhibited paramagnetic behavior. Cell viability tests of HAp:Gd/Yb/Tm and HAp:Gd/Eu powders in human dental pulp stem cell cultures indicated their good biocompatibility. © 2019, The Author(s).

AB  - In order to study the effect of Fe cation substitution on the local structure, defect formation, and hyperfine interactions in ZnO, Mössbauer spectroscopy measurements of the microwave processed Zn 1 - x Fe x O (x = 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, and 0.20) nanoparticles, together with ab initio calculations, were performed. Complementary information on the distribution of particle size and morphology, as well as magnetic properties, were obtained by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and squid-magnetometry. The selected model for analyzing the Mössbauer spectra of our samples is a distribution of quadrupole splittings. The fitting model with two Lorentz doublets was rejected due to its failure to include larger doublets. The Fe 3 + ions do not yield magnetic ordering in the samples at room temperature. The results from first-principles calculations confirm that the major component of the Mössbauer spectra corresponds to the Fe-alloyed ZnO with Zn vacancy in the next nearest neighbor environment. The magnetic measurements are consistent with the description of the distribution of iron ions over the randomly formed clusters in the ZnO host lattice. While at room temperature all the samples are paramagnetic, magnetic interactions cause a transition into a cluster spin-glass state at low temperatures. © 2019 Author(s).

AB  - Bismuth germanium oxide Bi12GeO20 (BGO) has very interesting electrical, optical and magnetic properties. In order to make devices based on this material more flexible, its powder was used for preparing polymer composites. This study reports investigation of the effects of using different solvents and polymers in preparation of BGO composite on the microstructural and optical behaviour of the resulting material. Preparation of such composites by a solution casting method is described. Poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and polystyrene (PS)) were used as matrix materials and acetone and chloroform as solvents. Their microstructure and the quality of BGO dispersion and deaggregation in polymer matrix were analyzed by SEM, Raman, XRD and optical spectroscopy. The influence of particle size distribution, their shapes, and concentration on the optical transmission is calculated based on Mie scattering theory and discussed, too. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. Influence of different pore-forming agents on wollastonite microstructures and adsorption capacities

AB  - In this study, porous macro- and micro-cellular wollastonite-based ceramics was synthesized. A ceramic precursor, methylhydrocyclosiloxane, together with micro-sized CaCO3, was used as a starting material. After 20 min of ultrasound treatment, and calcination at 250 degrees C for 30 min, different pore-forming agents were added to the as-obtained powders. Differential thermal analysis was used to determine characteristic temperatures of processes occurring within powders during heating. Based on the obtained results, the sintering regime was set up. The prepared mixtures were pressed into pallets and sintered at 900 degrees C. During the sintering regime, porous wollastonite-based ceramics was obtained. The phase composition of the sintered samples, as well as the microstructures, were analyzed by using X-ray diffraction and SEM. A two-phase system was detected in all samples, CaSiO3 wollastonite and Ca2SiO4 larnite, and their ratio varied with each pore-forming agent. It was observed that the addition of different pore-forming agents resulted in significantly different microstructures. In a batch test, the influence of pH, the contact time and the initial ion concentration on the adsorption efficiency of As+5, Cr(+6)and phosphate ions on the synthesized adsorbents were studied. Time-dependent adsorption is best described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Weber-Morris model, which predict intra-particle diffusion as a rate-controlling step of the overall process. High adsorption capacities, 21.93, 23.88, and 27.29 mg g(-1), were obtained for the CaCO3-siloxane-nanocellulose sorbent, and similar/lower capacities were obtained for the CaCO3-siloxane-PMMA and CaCO3-siloxane-cotton wool adsorbents.

AB  - In recent years the nanocomposites of graphene oxide (GO) and different inorganic and organic compounds have shown great potential for charge storage applications. In present work we have investigated the influence of 12-tungstophosphoric acid (WPA) on surface chemistry of graphene oxide and thermal stability of nanocomposite. For this purpose nanocomposites with different mass ratios of GO and WPA were prepared. The thermal stability of nanocomposites was investigated by thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis (TGA-DTA) while changes in surface chemistry of GO and structural properties of WPA were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and temperature programmed desorption (TPD) method. The TGA-DTA measurements of composites have shown that the major mass loss, due to carbon combustion, is shifted to higher temperatures (~500 °C vs. 380 °C of pure GO). Furthermore, when the amount of WPA is higher than 25 mass percent the nanocomposites start to act like individual components, which was also confirmed by FTIR analysis. The amount of surface oxygen groups, monitored by both TPD and FTIR methods, showed ˝V˝ shaped dependence from the quantity of WPA with minimum at about 12 mass percent of WPA. At the same time, the FTIR spectra revealed the structural changes of WPA, displayed as shifting and splitting of characteristic bands of Keggin anion structure.

AB  - Due to pozzolanic characteristics, fly ash is commonly used as a cement replacement in construction composites. Addition of natural clays with sorption ability (i.e. zeolite and bentonite) in to the fly ash based construction materials is of both scientific and industrial interest. Namely, due to the application of sorptive clay minerals, it is possible to immobilize toxic heavy metals from the composite structure. The thermal compatibility of fly ash and zeolite, as well as fly ash and bentonite, within the composite was observed during sintering procedure. The starting components were used in 1: 1 ratio and they were applied without additional mechanical treatment. The used compaction pressure for the tablets was 2 t.cm(-2). The sintering process was conducted at 1000 degrees C and 1200 degrees C for two hours in the air atmosphere. The mineralogical phase composition of the non-treated and sintered samples was analyzed using X-ray diffraction method. Scanning electron microscopy was applied in the analysis of the microstructure of starting and sintered samples. The thermal behavior was observed via DTA method. The influence of temperature on the properties of fly ash-zeolite and fly ash-bentonite composites was investigated.

AB  - Magnesium hydride, as hydrogen storage material, meets the requirements such as high gravimetric hydrogen capacity (7,6 wt%), low cost and weight, abundance and H2 absorption/desorption cycling possibility. Given that the oxide additives show the good impact on desorption properties, mechanical milling of MgH2 with addition of 5, 10 and 15% wt. WO3 was performed. The microstructure and morphology of composites were analysed by XRD, PSD and SEM and correlated to hydrogen desorption properties which have been investigated by DSC. The results have shown that WO3 has a positive effect on the desorption kinetics as well as on the change of the desorption mechanism.

AB  - Hybrid systems based on nano hydroxyapatites (HAp) are the subject of numerous studies in preventive and regenerative medicine. Special interests are directed towards the creation of a system based on HAp for use in a nano-oncology. The main objective of this research is directed towards the creation of a system with cytotoxic properties towards the cancer cells with the same time, minimum side effects. Carriers base on core shell of HAp/chitosan-poly(D,L)-lactide-coglycolide (PLGA) loaded with androstane-based cancer inhibitor could be seen as promising drug delivery platforms for selective cancer therapies.In this study we utilize an emulsification process and freeze drying to load the composite particles based on HAp nanocarrier, chitosane (Ch), PLGA and chitosan oligosaccharide lactate (ChOL) with 17β-hydroxy-17α-picolyl-androst-5-en-3β-acetate (A) and 3β,17β-dihydroxy-16-hydroxymino-androst-5-en (B), a chemotherapeutic derivatives of androstane. The picolyl androstane derivatives showed high potency in the cell inhibitors of hormone-dependent cancers (lung, prostate and colon cancer; adeno and cervix carcinoma; etc.).1H NMR, 13C NMR and high-resolution time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MS) techniques confirmed the intact structure of the derivatives A and B. The thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis (TGA, DTA) coupled with mass spectrometry was used to qualitatively confirm the drug loading process. FT-IR, XRD, AFM and DSC techniques have confirmed the success of androstane (A and B) loading process in core shell particles base on nano hydroxyapatite. All the synthesized particles were found to be spherical in shape with a uniform size distribution from d50=167 to d50=231 nm. Highly selective anticancer activity was noted towards the human lung carcinoma (A549) by A loaded HAp/Ch-PLGA and towards the human breast adenocarcinoma (MDA-MB-231) by B loaded HAp/ChOL. The obtained results of the DET and MTT tests were in agreement.

AB  - Sodium transition-metal oxides with general formula NaxTMO2 (TM = Co, Mn, Ni, etc.) have attracted a lot of interest in the battery community due to low cost of sodium in contrast to lithium. Sodium cobalt oxide is the most attractive of them for cathode application because of its conductive, thermic and magnetic characteristics. In this study, sodium cobalt oxide, NaxCoO2 , was synthesized by simple method which involves solid state reaction in air, at temperature of 900 ºC; starting materials were Na2CO3 and Co3O4 in stoichiometric amounts. Additionally, fluorination of the synthesized sodium cobalt oxide was carried out in vacuum at 200ºC; NH4HF2 was used as a fluorine source. Then, structural and microstructural properties of the obtained powders were examined.

AB  - Cordierite 2MgO+2Al2O3+5SiO2 is frequently used ceramic material, that is commonly used as a carrier of electrical components due to its low dielectric constant (~ 5), and low temperature thermal expansion coefficient (20•10-7 ºC-1). In order to accelerate the process of sintering, 5.00 mass% TeO2 was added to the starting mixtures. System was tested in two parallel mixtures, one with no added additives, and the other one with TeO2. The mechanical activation of the both mixtures was performed in a high-energy ball mill in time intervals from 0 to 40 min with ball to powder mass ratio 1:40. The particle size analysis (PSA) was employed in order to determine the changes in the particle size of the mechanically treated powders. The phase composition of the starting powders as well as microstructures was analyzed by the means of X-ray diffraction method and SEM.

AB  - Neutron powder diffraction (NPD) was employed to further investigate the BaTi1-xSnxO3 (BTS) system previously studied by X-ray diffraction. The room-temperature phase compositions and crystal structures of BTS samples with x = 0, 0.025, 0.05, 0.07, 0.10, 0.12, 0.15 and 0.20 were refined by the Rietveld method using NPD data. It is well known that barium titanate powder (x = 0) crystallizes in the tetragonal P4mm space group. The crystal structures of the samples with 0.025 LT = x LT = 0.07 were refined as mixtures of P4mm and Amm2 phases; those with x = 0.1 and 0.12 show the coexistence of rhombohedral R3m and cubic phases, while the samples with x = 0.15 and 0.20 crystallize in a single cubic Pm (3) over barm phase. Temperature-dependent NPD was used to characterize the BaTi0.95Sn0.05O3 sample at 273, 333 and 373 K, and it was found to form single-phase Amm2, P4mm and Pm (3) over barm structures at these respective temperatures. The NPD results are in agreement with data obtained by differential scanning calorimetry and dielectric permittivity measurements, which show a para-electric-ferroelectric transition (associated with structural transition) from Pm (3) over barm to P4mm at about 353 K followed by a P4mm to Amm2 phase transition at about 303 K.

AB  - In this study, highly porous macro- and micro-cellular wollastonite-based ceramics was synthesized. Ceramic precursor, methylhydrocyclosiloxane, together with micro-sized CaCO3, was used as starting material. After 20 min of ultrasound treatment, and calcination at 250 oC for 30 min, different pore-forming agents were added to the as-obtained powders. Differential thermal analysis was used to determine characteristic temperatures of processes occurring within powders during heating. Based on the obtained results, sintering regime was set up. Prepared mixtures were pressed into pallets and sintered at 900 oC. During the sintering regime, highly porous wollastonite-based ceramics was obtained. The phase composition of the sintered samples as well as microstructures was analyzed by the means of X-ray diffraction method and SEM. Two-phase system was detected in all samples, CaSiO3 wollastonite and Ca2SiO4 larnite, and their ratio varied with each pore-forming agent. It was observed that addition of different pore-forming agent resulted in significantly different microstructures.

AB  - ZnO spheroidal nanoparticles, synthesized by microwave processing, were used for preparation of composites with polyethylene oxide (PEO). The phase purity and crystal structure of the composites were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. The composites particles morphology and size distributions were studied by FE-SEM and laser diffraction particle size analyzer, respectively. The optical properties were studied using UV Vis diffuse reflectance and photoluminescence spectroscopy. It is found that in the wavelength range 550-800 nm, ZnO and ZnO/PEO composites absorb about 50% of the incident light intensity. Also red-shift of band gap energy (0.12-0.15 eV) compared to bulk ZnO was determined. The effect of PEO molecular weights, 200,000, 600,000 and 900,000 g/mol, on photocatalytic activity of ZnO/PEO composites were examined via de-colorization of methylene blue (MB) under direct sunlight irradiation. A large efficiency of MB de-colorization was found after 6 h of irradiation. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of ZnO/PEO composites is attributed to the: (1) lattice defects introduced in ZnO crystal structure by rapid microwave processing, and (2) presence of PEO as a source of oxygen interstitials. AB  - Since cordierite, 2MgO center dot 2Al(2)O(3)center dot 5SiO(2) (MAS), is a very useful high-temperature ceramic material, it is important to decrease its sintering temperature. In order to accelerate the process of sintering, 5.00 mass% MoO3 was added to the starting mixtures. The mechanical activation of the starting mixtures was performed in a high-energy ball mill in time intervals from 0 to 160 min. After the activation, starting mixtures were sintered at 1300 A degrees C for 2 h. In order to determine the impact of mechanical activation on particle size distribution and powders morphology, the mechanically treated powders were characterized by a laser light-scattering particle size analyzer and scanning electron microscopy. The phase composition of the starting mixtures and sintered samples was analyzed by the X-ray diffraction method. In order to determine temperature intervals of chemical reactions and phase transitions, differential thermal analyses (DTA) and thermo-gravimetric analysis were used. Kissingers equation was employed to calculate apparent activation energies of various processes that occur within the system during heating. Based on the obtained DTA results, it was established that mechanical activation along with MoO3 additive has influence on sintering temperature which was decreased for more than 100 A degrees C, comparing to the literature data.

AB  - Geopolymeric binders (GB) were produced using fly ash (FA) and electric arc furnace slag (EAFS). The slag has been added in the range of 0-40%. The effects of slag content on the strength, microstructure and thermal resistance were evaluated. It was found that the amount of EAFS up to 30% positively affects the strength evolution of GB. The main reaction product of FA/EAFS blends was amorphous N-(C)-A-S-H gel along with geopolymer-type gel (N-A-S-H). Thermal resistance of GB was considered from the standpoint of their mechanical and dimensional stability after heating in the temperature interval of 600800 C. The changes in mechanical and thermal properties of GB after heating are attributed to the changes in their structure. The results have shown that EAFS negatively affects the thermal resistance of GB above 600 degrees C due to the phase transition and morphological transformation of the amorphous gel phase. AB  - The removal of Cs (I) ions from aqueous solution was studied using natural diatomite as adsorption materials originated from Rudovci, Serbia. The microstructure of natural diatomite has been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) while the degree of Cs adsorption was evaluated by atomic emission spectroscopy. The cation exchange capacity (CEC) values for natural diatomite was 50 meq/100g. Depending on whether the Cs adsorption occurred in the acidic and alkaline media at a temperature of 298.15 K in acidic media Delta G(0) values was -12.674 kJ/mol, while in alkaline media Delta G(0) was 13.142 kJ/mol and a change of Delta S-0 to 42.51 J/molK in acidic media and 44.08 J/molK in alkaline medium.

AB  - Cordierite, 2MgO•2Ah03•5Si02 (MAS), is a very attractive high-temperature ceramic material. In order to accelerate the process of sintering, 5.00 mass% Mo03 was added to the starting mixtures. The mechanical activation of the starting mixtures was performed in a high energy ball mill in time intervals from 0 to 160 minutes. In following, starting mixtures were sintered at 1300 °C for 2h. In order to determine the changes in the particle size distribution, the mechanically treated powders were characterized by a laser light-scattering particle size analyzer. The phase composition of the starting mixtures and sintered samples was analyzed by the X-ray diffraction method. Differential thermal analyses (DTA) and thermo-gravimetric (TG) analysis were used in order to determine characteristic temperatures. Kissinger's equation was employed to calculate apparent activation energies of various processes that occur within the system while heating. Based on the obtained DTA results, it was established that mechanical activation along with MoO3 additive, has influence on sintering temperature which was decreased for about 150 °C.

AB  - Commercial Mn-Zn ferrite powder was milled in a planetary ball mill for 30-240 minutes. Particle size distribution in the milled powders was analyzed using a laser particle size analyzer and correlated with XRD and SEM analysis of the milled powders. Green disc and torroid samples were sintered in air in the temperature interval 800 -1300oC for 2 hours. SEM/EDS, AFM/MFM analysis of the sintered samples and measurements of their electrical properties such as DC resistance up to 500 MHz enabled establishment of a correlation between the microstructure and properties in the high-frequency range.

AB  - Starting powders of TiO2 (anatase) and Fe2O3 (hematite) were mixed in the molar ratio 1:1. Pseudobrookite powder was obtained by a combined milling/calcination procedure. Particle size distribution was analyzed on a laser particle size analyzer and correlated with XRD and SEM analysis. The band gap was determined using UV/Vis spectroscopy. Green samples were sintered in a dilatometer and at 1000oC for 2h in air. Thermal diffusivity was determined from photoacoustic measurements. Electrical conductivity measurements were performed. The aim was to obtain pseudobrookite with properties suitable for polymer paste for thick films to be applied as gas sensors.

AB  - Fire protection coatings on steel constructions for outdoor conditions on the basis of organic solutions have been analyzed. The first layer of coating is corrosion protection, alkyd paint „PROTHERM STEEL PRIMEPOX“ manufactorer „ITALVIS PROTECT“ Italy. The second layer of coating is an expanding coat for outdoor conditions „PROTHERM STEEL (EXT)“ solvent-bazed, „AMONNFIRE“ Italy. The third layer is final colors for metal „AMOTHERM STEEL TOP PU SB“ „AMONNFIRE“ Italy. XRD, DTA/TG and FTIR methods were used for sample characterization. It was found that primary and outer layer had very good adhesion. The second layer, for fire protection possesses 2.5 mass % humidity, which resulted in decrease of adhesion. XRD and FTIR analysis showed that those materials are adequate materials for fire protection up to 1000°C. Principles of fire protection are based on chemical reaction that are taking place in the temperature range 400-700°C.

AB  - In the present work, remediation of lead-containing solution using raw and modified kaolinite has been presented. The micro and nanostructure of samples has been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Laser diffraction and scattering (LDS), was analyzed by particle size analyzer based on laser diffraction and particle size distribution (PSD) was done. The degree of metal adsorption was evaluated analyzing the Pb(II) contaminated samples by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (micro- and nanostructure on immobilization efficiency correlCP AES). The results show the impact of immobilization efficiency and ation between micro- and nanostructure. The thermodynamic data (Delta HA degrees, Delta SA degrees, Delta GA degrees) are calculated from the temperature-dependent sorption isotherms. The results suggest sorption process of Pb(II) on kaolinite as spontaneous and endothermic.

Influence of Mechanical Activation on the Constituents of the MgO-Al2O3-SiO2-MoO3 System

AB  - Cordierite, 2MgO•2Al2O3•5SiO2 (MAS), is high-temperature ceramic material. Cordierite is commonly used material because of outstanding electrical properties, low temperature expansion coefficient and low dielectric constant. In order to accelerate the process of sintering, 5.00 mass% MoO3 has been added to the starting mixtures. The mechanical activation of the starting mixtures was performed in a high energy ball mill during 0-160 minutes. All starting mixtures were sintered at 1100°C, 1200°C and 1300°C for 2h. The particle size analysis (PSA) was employed in order to determine the changes in the particle size of the mechanically treated powders. The phase composition of the starting powders was analyzed by the X-ray diffraction method. Differential thermal (DTA) and thermogravimetric (TG) analysis were used in order to determine characteristic temperatures within the system during heating. Based on the obtained DTA results, it was established that mechanical activation with additive MoO3, has influence on decreasing sintering temperatures for about 150°C.
