AB - This study presents the impact properties of the new form of hybrid thermoplastic composites. The Kolon fabrics were impregnated with the 10 wt% poly (vinyl butyral) (PVB)/ethanol solution with the addition of silica (SiO2) particles originating from rice husk or layered double hydroxide modified silica particles (FeAl-LDH@SiO2) as reinforcement. All the composites consisted of one layer of the impregnated fabric where the silica particles concentrations were 0.5 wt% and 1.0 wt% regarding PVB. The impact properties of the composite samples were analyzed by the controlled energy puncture impact tester. The structures of the composite samples were determined by the attenuated total reflection Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The results showed that the Kolon/PVB/1 wt% FeAl-LDH@SiO2 sample yielded the maximum impact force.

AB - Intelligent pedestrian crossings were made with the aim to increase pedestrian safety at poorly lit locations. New technologies include the design of polymer materials that have high performance by optimizing properties such as compression, tensile and impact strengths, wear resistance, hardness and transparency. The desired properties are set up to face the demands of a heavy daily traffic load and enable the functionality. Laminate material consists of the epoxy composite reinforced with silica (SiO2) derived from rice husk waste and a protective thermoplastic polyurethane layer. The top layer of the laminate material is a transparent thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) serving as a protective layer with high wear resistance and good adhesion with epoxy composite. Silica obtained from rice husk waste was used in reinforcing of the epoxide in order to improve the mechanical properties, diffuse the light, improve the adhesion with TPU and decrease the production costs. Micro-Vickers hardness of the epoxy composite was increased by 70% with the addition of 15 wt% of SiO2. Impact energy of the epoxy composite with 15 wt% of SiO2 was increased by 272.9% after adding the TPU layer. Compressive strength of the epoxy resin is improved by 16.2% by reinforcement with 15 wt% of SiO2, while the laminate composite material showed 207% higher compressive strength than the commonly used asphalt pavement. Moreover, the addition of 15 wt% of SiO2 improved the adhesion between epoxy composite and TPU layer (11.2%). Thus, obtained laminated material made of the epoxy composite with 15 wt% of SiO2 (obtained from rice husk waste) and TPU598 showed mechanical properties and LED light transmission/diffusion appropriate for application in the intelligent pedestrian crossings. © 2021, Iran Polymer and Petrochemical Institute.

AB - The goal of this study was to investigate the effect of the structure of Mn-Al layered double hydroxide (LDH) on the adhesion behavior of composite adhesives on two Al alloys (L3005 and L8079). The composite adhesives were made out of the UV-curing Bisphenol A glycidylmethacrylate/triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (BT) as polymer matrix and the addition of 1, 3, and 5 wt. % of Mn-Al LDH as adhesion enhancers. Adhesion was evaluated by using the micro Vickers hardness testing procedure. The wetting angle of composite adhesives to the Al substrates was measured and compared to the adhesion parameter b obtained from the microhardness tests. The highest increase in adhesion was observed for BT with 5 wt. % of Mn-Al LDH on L3005 substrate, which was more than 15 times higher than the adhesion for the neat BT. The morphological segregation of composite adhesives after the contact with Al substrates was examined by optical microscopy and a higher compatibility of Mn-Al LDH particles with L3005 substrate was found. The methods used for the adhesion properties assessment suggested that the Mn-Al LDH was the best adhesion enhancer of the BT matrix for L3005 substrate containing a higher content of Mn and surface hydroxyl groups.

AB - Cavitation erosion of hybrid acrylate composite films with polyhedraloligosilsesquioxanes (POSS) was investigated in this study. The hybrid films aremade with 1, 3 and 5 wt% of POSS reagents containing: (a) hydroxyl (POSS-M),(b) both hydroxyl and allyl (POSS-M-A) and (c) methacryloyl groups (POSS-MCl).Addition of 5 wt% POSS-M-A caused the highest microhardness increase for49.8%, in comparison to the pure matrix material. Cavitation resistance of hybridfilms, estimated as the time-dependent mass loss, was improved by POSS addition.POSS-M-A addition (5 wt%) contributed to 94% lower mass loss comparingto pure Bis-GMA/TEGDMA film. Scanning electron (SEM) and atomic forcemicroscopy (AFM) showed the lowest surface roughness obtained for compositewith POSS-M-A. The improved hardness and wear resistance of the compositefilms indicated that POSS-M-A filler enhanced interfacial adhesion and reinforcingof the Bis-GMA/TEGDMA matrix.

AB - This paper presents a new process for obtaining eco-epoxide adhesives synthesized from bio-renewable raw material (tannic acid—TA) and used for bonding lightweight materials (aluminum (Al) and carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP)). Two synthesized bio-epoxy components based on TA, (A) glycidyl ether and (B) glycidyl phosphate ester of TA, were used as a replacement for the toxic epoxy component based on Bisphenol A. The effect of eco-epoxy components on the interface adhesion was measured by the determination of adhesion parameter b, which was compared to the reference epoxy (REF). The increase of adhesion parameter b was 77.5% for A and 151.5% for B. The adhesion of both eco-adhesives was tested using the bell peel test (BPT) with the Al and CFRP adherends. When compared to REF, the average peel load for B was 17.6% (39.3%) and 58.3% (176.9%) higher for the Al and CFRP adherends, respectively. Complete adhesion failure of REF reflected the weak adhesion to both Al and CFRP, which was improved by the addition of eco-epoxy components A and B showing the presence of cohesive failure. The microhardness testing method of interface adhesion was proven to be a fast and reliable testing method, providing a qualitative indication in adhesive selection.

AB - The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) structure on the adhesion behaviour of composite films onto a metallic surface. The composite films consisted of UV cured bisphenol A glycidylmethacrylate/triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (Bis-GMA/TEGDMA) as matrix and reactive POSS structures as adhesion enhancers. Composites were made with 1, 3 and 5 wt % of POSS. Adhesion was evaluated using the micro Vickers hardness testing method. The contact angle of composite films to a brass substrate was measured and compared to the adhesion parameter obtained from microhardness measurements. Optical microscopy indicated morphological segregation in the hybrid films suggesting the compatibility extent between the matrix and each particle. The shape and size of the indent were analyzed and correlated with adhesion quality. The methods used for the estimation of adhesion strength and quality clearly indicated that the highest adhesion enhancement of the Bis-GMA/TEGDMA matrix was POSS reagent containing both polar (hydroxyl) and nonpolar (unsaturated aliphatic - allyl) side groups. © 2020 Elsevier Ltd

© 2020 Elsevier Ltd",

AB - Thermal properties of acrylate-based composite combined with alumina-based particles were investigated. The composites were made of poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) modified with dimethyl itaconate (DMI) as a matrix. Neat alumina particles (Al2O3) and alumina doped with iron oxide (Al2O3-Fe) modified with 3-aminopropyl-trimethoxylane (AM) and flax oil fatty acid methyl esters (biodiesel - BD) were used as reinforcement. Thermal conductivity measurements showed that composite with alumina particles with the highest alpha phase content had the highest thermal conductivity values. Mechanical properties (tensile strength, modulus of elasticity and elongation at break) were improved by the addition of modified alumina particles to PMMA/DMI matrix. The thermal properties are the most improved for composite with 3 wt.% Al2O3-Fe-AM particles that had the lowest temperature in a crack zone was noticed (10.28 %) compared to PMMA added due to the better stiffness and highest thermal conductivity.

AB - Basalt as a filler in a polymer-based composite material fulfils the demand of being natural, environment-friendly material for the production of various composite materials. The material could be used as protective layer and the abrasion should be tested in order to evaluate the properties of the material. The cavitation test enables the evaluation of the possible service in conditions that simulate the extensive erosion. The presence of basalt in the matrix improves the resistance to cavitation. The possibility to further improve the material could be obtained using the reinforcement of the matrix itself by incorporation of submicron ceramic particles into the composite. The obtained hybrid composite material with the addition of reinforcement in the matrix further improves the cavitation resistance.

AB - Aluminum oxide (Al2O3) is a ceramic material that has exceptional mechanical, physical and chemical properties. Due to its extraordinary chemical properties, aluminum oxide is used in composites as reinforcement and as material in high temperature applications. In composite materials of particular interest are different structures of aluminum oxide, which can be obtained by thermal treatment. The aim of this article was to make a composite material with a matrix made from PMMA itaconate copolymer and to examine the thermal properties, depending on the addition of various fillers with surface modification. Modulus of elasticity and the strengths of PMMA are in decrease by adding the itaconate to the matrix. Aluminum oxide based particles were used as reinforcement with a modified organosilane-3-aminopropyl-trimethoxylane (AM) surface and in the second stage with fatty acid fatty acid methyl esters (biodiesel-BD). Surface modification particles establish a better bond with the polymer matrix through covalent and hydrogen bonds and dipol-dipole interactions. Efficient dispersion of particles in the matrix also improves the transmission of the load through the matrix, which is followed by a thermionic camera. Thermograms during tensile test indicate differences in temperatures occurring in the fracture zone of composite materials. The temperature in the fracture zone is closely related to the efficiency of the load transfer and the temperature conductivity of the material itself. The mechanical properties of the material are improved by adding inorganic particles based on the activated surface of aluminum oxide, thereby creating a new composite material with improved mechanical and thermal properties.

AB - The processing and characterization of hybrid PMMA resin composites with nano-zirconia (ZrO2) and electrospun polystyrene (PS) polymer fibers were presented in this study. Reinforcement was selected with the intention to tune the physical and mechanical properties of the hybrid composite. Surface modification of inorganic particles was performed in order to improve the adhesion of reinforcement to the matrix. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) provided successful modification of zirconia nanoparticles with 3-Methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (MEMO) and bonding improvement between incompatible inorganic nanoparticles and PMMA matrix. Considerable deagglomeration of nanoparticles in the matrix occurred after the modification has been revealed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Microhardness increased with the concentration of modified nanoparticles, while the fibers were the modifier that lowers hardness and promotes toughness of hybrid composites. Impact test displayed increased absorbed energy after the PS electrospun fibers had been embedded. The optimized composition of the hybrid was determined and a good balance of thermal and mechanical properties was achieved. © 2019 Elmadani et al. AB - To obtain flakes like zirconia particles at relatively low temperature, the synthesis method for producing zirconia particles on the surface of salt particles that serve as a template is examined. The produced particles are incorporated as reinforcement in the poly(methyl methacrylate) matrix to obtain a composite material. The particles were characterized by the X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and image analysis. The morphology of the particles and composites was examined using a field emission scanning electron microscope. Composites prepared with synthesized particles were compared to those containing commercial zirconia particles to estimate the possibility of use of synthesized particles as reinforcement. The influence of the 1 wt% of zirconia particles in composite material on the mechanical properties was studied using microhardness measurements and dynamic mechanical analysis. The results obtained show that the addition of 1 wt% of zirconia particles increases the mechanical properties of the composite relative to the pure polymer matrix.

abstract = "To obtain flakes like zirconia particles at relatively low temperature, the synthesis method for producing zirconia particles on the surface of salt particles that serve as a template is examined. The results obtained show that the addition of 1 wt% of zirconia particles increases the mechanical properties of the composite relative to the pure polymer matrix.",

AB - A facile synthesis was employed for three polyhedral oligo silsequioxanes (POSS), obtaining incompletely condensed structures with fern-like and cubic morphologies. Proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H NMR) indicated the successful synthesis of the proposed POSS structures. The hydroxyl groups affected the manner and type of POSS morphology, as seen under a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and a transmission electron microscope (TEM). Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) showed the availability of surface hydroxyl groups that contributed to the formation of a higher amount of char residue, as found from TGA analysis. The highest decomposition temperature (281 °C) and the least char residue were found for a cross-linkable POSS, obtained by esterification of the hydroxyl groups with methacryloyl chloride. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd

AB - Alumina based particles were prepared from aluminium chloride hydroxide as starting material by sol-gel technique. One series of particles was doped with ferrous oxide. Both series of particles were calcinated at three different temperatures: 700 degrees C, 800 degrees C and 900 degrees C. Poly(methyl methacrylate), PMMA, was used as a matrix and two different types of alumina based particles were added into the matrix to form the composites. All composites consisted of 3 wt% of alumina based particles. The aim of this study was to examine whether and how the temperature of particle calcination affects the microhardness and mechanical properties of the composite. The particles were characterized by the X-ray diffraction (XRD) and physical absorption methods. The morphology of the composites was examined using a field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM). The microhardness of composites was measured using a traditional Vickers hardness (HV) method. The mechanical characteristics of obtained composites were determined using tensile test and impact testing.

AB - Atom transfer free radical polymerization (ATRP) was employed in a synthesis of graft polymer EVA-g-PMMAwith controlled length of side PMMA chains. Three steps of synthesis: partial hydrolysis of EVA, esterification with chloroacetyl chloride and ATRP grafting were performed to produce EVAOH, macroinitiator EVACl and grafted polymers G8020 (EVA/PMMA = 80/20 wt%) and G6040 (EVA/PMMA = 60/40 wt%). FTIR, Raman and NMR spectroscopy were used in the determination of the chemical structure and modification of EVA. Transmitted light and dark field microscopy showed higher affinity for coil formation of EVA-g-PMMA with longer PMMA side chains, i.e. G6040 compatibilizer. Morphological, thermal and adhesive properties of optical fiber adhesives of graft polymers and polymer blends poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate)-blend-poly(methyl methacrylate) (EVA/PMMA) compatibilized with 1 wt% of EVA-g-PMMA, were studied. Image analysis of SEM micrographs showed effective compatibilization with short grafted chains (G8020) that was indicated by lower porosity characteristics. TG/DTG analysis enabled determination of degree of hydrolysis and amount of chloro-functionalized groups. DSC analysis showed higher thermal stability of G8020 polymer. Single lap joint of adhesives/optical fibers were subjected to adhesive testing and obtained results for maximal force applied and adhesive failure suggested the visible influence of the length of graft chains on adhesion.

AB - This research examined SiC sintered specimens with high hardness and strength. This material is used to protect of projectile impact for military purposes. The testing procedure consists of structure examination obtained using XRD analysis, surface examination by SEM analysis and optical microscopy, examination of mechanical properties and density determination. Analysis confirmed surface irregularities characterized using image analysis. The sample is subjected to bending. Finite element modeling was used to simulate the behavior of sample subjected to bending in presence of critical damage on surface. It is confirmed that there is correlation between the largest irregularities determined on surface and measured strength of sample. Simulations show the significance of damage size. The size of damage on surface is considered to be the critical parameter for quality determination.
