AB - Due to the low CO2 emission of geopolymers compared to Portland cement, interest in their use as binding cement has increased in recent years. The main goal of this research is to relate the green and sustainable characteristics to the good mechanical and chemical properties of fly ashbased geopolymers. For those purposes, samples of different ratios of fly ash (FA) and metakaolin (MK) were prepared. Mineralogical characterization of the geopolymer samples conducted using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) showed that in the geopolymer synthesis reaction new amorphous phase was formed. Diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFT) confirmed characteristic bands of Si-O and O-Si-O groups at 1045 cm–1 . Compressive strength analysis revealed that the optimal ratio of FA and MK is 50:50 and exhibits the highest value, while X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis revealed the total reduction of carbon content in the alkali activated geopolymer with optimal stoichiometry 50:50. The results of this research indicates the possibility to obtain a geopolymer material with almost complete absence of carbon, which implies further application as a material with very high environmental potential and zero carbon emission.

AB - N-doped TiO2/carbon composites (TiO2/CN) with different nitrogen content, were obtained starting from titanium isopropoxide and glucose, and by varying the amount of melamine, added to starting reaction mixture. For comparison, an undoped sample (TiO2/C) was also prepared. Structural and surface characteristics were determined through scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and nitrogen adsorption–desorption isotherms. The photocatalytic activity of TiO2/CN composites was examined via photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue and multiclass pharmaceuticals from water solution. It was found that N doping of TiO2/carbon composites induced changes in structural and surface characteristics of TiO2/CN composites, improving their adsorption, but decreasing photocatalytic efficiency. Nevertheless, TiO2/CN0.05 composite obtained by the hydrothermal synthesis in the presence of glucose and 0.05 g melamine showed the highest efficiency for removing selected pharmaceuticals and methylene blue from aqueous solutions through the combined processes of adsorption in the dark, and photocatalytic degradation under UV and visible irradiation.

AB - Carbonaceous solid-phase extraction (SPE) sorbent, efficient in isolation and enrichment of multiclass pesticides and pharmaceuticals from water, was synthesized starting from cheap waste beech sawdust and using KOH as the activated agent. The first step in carbon material preparation was hydrothermal carbonization of the waste beech sawdust. Following hydrothermal treatment, the obtained material was activated, using different amounts of KOH. It was found that applied activation leads to changes in material structure, an increase in specific surface area, and a decrease in the number of surface oxygen groups compared to carbonized sample. SPE procedure of multiclass pesticides and pharmaceuticals from water using activated carbonized beech sawdust (AcSD) was optimized by selecting the appropriate elution solvents, the sample pH, and the sample volume to obtain the highest enrichment efficiency. The optimized SPE procedure was applied for water analysis using different AcSD samples as a sorbent for analyte preconcentration. Activated carbon sorbent, obtained with the highest amount of KOH, showed the highest recoveries regarding the most analytes, which were comparable with the recoveries obtained by commercial cartridges. © 2022 Serbian Chemical Society. AB - In this study, the influence of boron doping on structural and surface properties of carbon material synthesized by a hydrothermal method was investigated, and the obtained results were compared with the previously published influence that boron has on characteristics of carbonized boron-doped hydrothermal carbons (CHTCB). Hydrothermal carbons doped with boron (HTCB) were obtained by the hydrothermal synthesis of glucose solutions with different nominal concentrations of boric acid. It was found that glucose based hydrothermal carbon does not have developed porosity, and the presence of boron in their structure has insignificant influence on it. On the contrary, additional carbonization increases the specific surface area of the undoped sample, while an increase in boron content drastically decreases the specific surface area. Boron doping leads to a decrease in the amount of surface oxygen groups, for both, hydrothermally synthesized and additionally carbonized materials. Raman analysis showed that the boron content does not affect a structural arrangement of the HTCB samples, and Raman structural parameters show a higher degree of disorder, compared to the CHTCB samples. Comparison of structural and surface characteristics of hydrothermal carbons and carbonized materials contributes to the study of the so far, insufficiently clarified influence that boron incorporation has on the material characteristics. © 2022 Serbian Chemical Society.
AB - In this study, carbon cryogel was used as solid-phase extraction sorbent for the extraction of estrogenic hormones (estrone, 17β-estradiol, and 17α-ethinylestradiol) from water solution.
The solid-phase extraction (SPE) method was optimized by choosing an appropriate mass of the sorbent, volume, and initial pH of estrogenic hormone water solution, as well as by choosing an appropriate organic solvent. The concentration of tested hormones after extraction was measured by liquid
chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry. Based on the obtained hormone recoveries, the following optimal conditions of the SPE procedure were chosen: 100 cm3
of hormone water
solution at initial pH adjusted to 7, 20 mg of the sorbent, the methanol-dichloromethane mixture was
used for hormone elution. Recoveries obtained under the optimal conditions ranged from 77 % for
estrone, to 86 % for 17β-estradiol, with relative standard deviation from 7,4 to 18 %.

materije, mogu izazivati niz opasnih i često neizlečivih bolesti. Iz tog razloga, istraživači
godinama u nazad razvijaju nove i usavršavaju postojeće tehnike za prečišćavanje otpadnih
voda od ovih zagađujućih materija [1]. Za prečišćavanje vode zagađene teškim metalima
mogu se koristiti različite metode: hemijska precipitacija, elektrohemijski tretmani, filtracija,
reverzna osmoza, jonska izmena, membranski procesi, adsorpcija.
desorpcionim procesom, predstavlja veoma efektivnu i ekonomičnu metodu.
vode. Karbon kriogel (CC) predstavlja ugljenični materijal razvijene mezoporoznosti čije
se adsorpcione karakteristike mogu poboljšati optimizacijom i kontrolisanjem parametara
dobijanja.
promena u specifičnoj površini i poroznosti materijala. S druge strane, ovim postupkom
dolazi do izmene površinske hemije materijala, uvođenjem novih, i povećanjem broja
Izmene u hemiji površine dovode i do
izmena adsorpcionih karakteristika karbon kriogela.
modifikovanog karbon kriogela dovodi do višestrukog povećanja adsorpcionog kapaciteta.

AB - Activated carbons with high specific surface area (even above 2000 m(2) g(-1)) and pronounced microporosity are prepared in two-stage process involving conventional carbonization of waste hemp fibers and subsequent activation by potassium hydroxide. Samples with considerably different surface and intrinsic micro-and mesoporous properties are obtained at different carbonization and activation conditions. The improvements of the capacitive properties are found upon increase in carbonization temperature, since it considerably influenced the specific surface area and the content of surface oxygen groups. Cyclic voltammetry experiments reveal the dependence of specific capacitance on the sweep rate due to the characteristic porous structure of the samples. The highest measured value in 1 M H2SO4 solution is 122 F g(-1). The electrochemical impedance data indicates eight-branch transmission line equivalent electric behavior of activated carbons. AB - Waste hemp (Cannabis sativa) fibers were used as sustainable and renewable raw materials for production of low-cost biocarbon sorbent for heavy metals removal. Carbon precursors of different chemical composition were obtained by oxidative and alkaline treatments of hemp fibers. Influence of lignocellulosic precursor chemical composition on hemp fibers-based biocarbon (HFB) characteristics was examined by BET surface area measurement, scanning electron microscopy and mass titration. It was found that lignin content and polymorphic transformation of cellulose increase the SBET of microporous HFBs, while hemicelluloses induce more homogeneous distribution of adsorption active sites. Heavy metal ions adsorption onto HFBs is primarily influenced by the amount of surface oxygen groups, while specific surface area plays a secondary role. Equilibrium data obtained for lead ions adsorption were analyzed by different nonlinear adsorption isotherms, and the best fitting model was chosen using standard deviation and Akaike information criterion (AIC(C)). The maximum adsorption capacities of HFBs ranged from 103.1 to 116.3 mg Pb/g. Thermodynamic parameters showed that Pb2+ adsorption onto HFBs is a spontaneous and complex endothermic process, suggesting the coexistence of physisorption and chemisorption mechanisms.

AB - The main objective of this work was to find optimal production parameters for the preparation of activated hemp fibers (ACh) with good adsorption properties toward pesticides. In order to examine the role of manufacturing parameters on ACh surface characteristics, activation process of carbonized hemp fibers was investigated by temperature programmed reaction and evolved gaseous products of activation were monitored by mass spectrometry. ACh samples were characterized by BET surface area, scanning electron microscopy and temperature-programmed desorption. KOH activation induces the reduction of oxygen groups existing on the carbonized hemp fiber surface and the formation of the more stable, predominantly anhydride groups, while porosity development correlates with both H-2 and CO, evolved during the activation, and increases with carbonization and activation temperature. Finally, the highest efficiency in pesticides removal was achieved by carbonization of waste hemp fibers and activation at 900 degrees C with KOH/carbonized material ratio of 2/1. High efficiency in pesticides removal indicates that activated hemp fibers could be successfully used as a sorbent in water purification. (C) 2015 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

AB - The surface characteristics of different carbon materials: activated carbon, carbon felt, glassy carbon and a porous carbon monolith were investigated. The specific surface area was examined by the BET method with N(2) adsorption, the amount and the type of surface oxygen groups by Boehm titration as well as by temperature-programmed desorption (TPD). By comparing the results obtained using BET analysis with those of TPD and the Boehm method, it was found that the number of surface groups was not proportional to the specific surface area. The total amount of oxygen groups, obtained by TPD, is higher than the amount obtained by Boehms method for porous samples. The inconsistencies between these results originate from the fact that the Boehm method is limited to the determination of acidic and basic groups, whereas TPD provides information on the total number of all surface oxygen groups. In addition, the presence of porosity could reduce the solvent-accessible surface in the Boehm method. The TPD profiles of CO evolution showed the presence of a low temperature maximum, below 650 K, which originates from CO(2) reduction on the carbon material surface.

AB - Carbon monolith was treated with HNO(3), KOH and H(2)O(2). Effects of these treatments on the surface functional groups and on the amount of silver deposited on the CM surface were studied by temperature programmed desorption (TPD) and atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS). As a result of chemical treatment there was an increase in the amount of surface oxygen complexes. The increase in the amount of silver deposit is proportional to the amount of surface groups that produce CO under decomposition. However, the high amount of CO groups, decomposing above 600 degrees C, induces the smaller Ag crystallite size. Therefore, the high temperature CO evolving oxides are, most likely, the initial centers for Ag deposition.
