AB - The paper presents preliminary results of the study on environmental and health effects due to the use of depleted uranium (DU) ammunition during NATO bombing of Serbia and Montenegro in 1999. Samples of animal blood (sheep, cows) were randomly collected in the region of Bujanovac (Novo Selo, Borovac) in 2003. Biochemical and hematological parameters of peripheral blood (oxidase activity of ceruloplasmin, malondialdehide concentration of red blood cell, activity of erythrocytic superoxide dismutase, concentration of hemoglobin, red blood cells count, etc.) indicating possible effects of oxidative stress due to the impact of DU on the environment were analyzed. The results have been evaluated in respect to the effect of the environmental DU.

AB - The results of the long-term investigations of Cs-137 transfer from soil to plants in different types of soil are presented. The investigations were carried out the region of Mt. Tara (1280m) and Mt. Sara (2000m). The activity of Cs-137 in the samples of soils and plants was determined on an HPGe detector by standard gamma spectrometry. Three types of soils were examined: shale, limestone and a mixed one, and some plants: grass, meadow flora, pinewood, blueberries, an endemic species of Mt. Sara, moss and lichen. The calculated transfer factors were in the range of 0.1-2.0 due to the type of soils and plants (3.0-10.0 for moss and lichen). The vertical distribution of Cs-137 in the first 15 cm of soils indicates the slow migration of Chernobyl cesium through soils except on riversides due to the washout effect. Generally, the concentration of Cs-137 in soils strongly depends on the configuration of the terrain.

AB - Uranium and thorium isotopes have been determined in cultivated soils previously planted by alfalfa and not fertilized for the last five years. Radiochemical procedure to separate uranium and thorium from other elements and to purify one from another was applied to physically prepared soils samples (10g). The procedure is based on successive ion-exchange separationi (Dowex 1x4, 100-200 mesh), including preconcentration, usual chemical operations, leaching and solvent extraction. Standard tracer solutions of U-232 and Th-229, separated from ingrown daughters, were used for radiochemical yield recoveries up to 90%. Purified fractions were electrodeposited and thin-layer radioactive sources for alpha-spectrometry were obtained. Activity of the samples have been measured by alpha-counting systems with vacuum-chamber (2Ombar), PIPS detector (100mm surface, resolution 24keV for Am-241, efficiency 2%) and SB detector (450mm, resolution 30keV for Am-241, efficiency 17%). The activities were in the range 0.3 - 12.0 mBq/g for uranium isotopes (U-234, 235, 238) and in the range of 25-40 mBq/g for thorium isotopes (Th-228, 230, 232).

AB - The content of natural radionuclides (226Ra, 232Th, 40K) in the samples of clays used in pharmacy was detected by standard gamma spectrometry using a HPGe detector (relative efficiency 20%). The values obtained were in the range of 58-77 Bq/kg for 226Ra, 68-97 Bq/kg for 232Th and 841-1384 Bq/kg for 40K. Radionuclide 137Cs was not detected. On average, the values were somewhat higher than those measured in clays used as raw materials in the industry of ceramics and building materials. In case of oral treatments, the intake was calculated and assessed to exceed several times the annual alimentary 226Ra and 232Th uptake.

Activity of the radionuclides was determined on an HPGe detector by standard gamma spectrometry. Mean activities of natural radionuclides were in the range of 2.0-560 Bq/kg depending on the radionuclide and the type of the material. Equivalent indices and OECD index for natural radionuclides were calculated, indicating lower content of natural radionuclides compared with data from other European countries. Indoor radon concentrations were measured in Belgrade dwellings by alpha scintillation counting technique. The concentrations were under 200 Bq/m3, depending on geochemical characteristics of the soil, building materials, construction of the building, storey number, dwelling conditions, as well as on the season. The measurements were performed as a part of the Quality Control Program for the Assessment by a National Laboratory for Radioactivity Control of Building Materials.
