AB - While the effects of chronic exposure to microplastic particles (MPs) are extensively studied, the outcomes of a single treatment have received relatively less attention. To investigate MPs’ potential acute toxicity, including their impact on general health status (victual consumption, sensorimotor deficits, and clinical toxicity signs) and serum biochemical parameters (markers of organ/tissue function and oxidative stress indicators), we administered thoroughly characterized MPs (1.4, 35, or 125 mg/kg), generated from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles, to adult male Wistar rats via oral gavage. The MPs’ short-term effects were assessed with well-established tests and methods. The results point to the absence of sensorimotor deficits and clinical toxicity signs, while levels of markers of liver, heart, and kidney function were altered in all MP groups. Decreased victual consumption and increased levels of oxidative stress indicators were evident following treatment with the two higher MP doses. Presented data indicate that examined MPs are able to initiate the development of local changes in tissues and organs within a short time frame, potentially leading to their damage and dysfunction. This study may increase the awareness of the detrimental effects of plastic contamination, as even a single exposure to MPs may provoke adverse health outcomes.

AB - The effect of pure Ni addition (5 wt.%) in MgH2 powder was investigated mechanochemically for short milling times (15, 30, and 45 min). Obtained MgH2-Ni system was characterized by XRD, SEM-EDS, PSD, DSC, and TPD. Compared to pure MgH2, uniform distribution of nickel reduces the temperature of H2 desorption by more than 100 °C. It is shown that influence of two important processes, grinding and catalysis, may be followed separately. We can conclude that the catalysis of H2 desorption by Ni particles on MgH2 matrix is the dominant effect for the investigated short milling times.

AB - The effect of mechanical milling on the thermal behavior of pyrophyllite ore from a deposit in Parsovići, Bosnia and Herzegovina, was characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and Particle size distribution. The thermal behavior of the material was followed by thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis and correlated to its microstructural properties. The Williamson-Hall model was used to calculate the crystallite size and microstrain. Mechanochemical treatment of pyrophyllite ore produced a substantial structural modification, mainly along the c axis, resulting in disorder and partial degradation of the crystal structure of the ore. The particle size diminution, induced defects, and microstrain in the crystal lattice cause decrease in the peak intensity until the final disappearance. As confirmed by scanning electron microscopy and particle-size-distribution analysis, the surface area and the agglomeration is more pronounced as grinding time increases. Dehydroxylation of the minerals in the unmilled ore was realized at 716oC confirm by FTIR analysis. The endothermic peak that corresponds to dehydroxylation is shifted toward lower temperatures and becomes broad giving rise to the formation of amorphous SiO2 as milling time increases.

AB - The effects of catalysis using vanadium as an additive (2 and 5 wt.%) in a high-energy ball mill on composite desorption properties were examined. The influence of microstructure on the dehydration temperature and hydrogen desorption kinetics was monitored. Morphological and microstructural studies of the synthesized sample were performed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), laser particle size distribution (PSD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) methods, while differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) determined thermal properties. To further access amorph species in the milling blend, the absorption spectra were obtained by FTIR-ATR analysis (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy attenuated total reflection). The results show lower apparent activation energy (Eapp) and H2 desorption temperature are obtained for milling bland with 5 wt.% added vanadium. The best explanation of hydrogen desorption reaction shows the Avrami-Erofeev model for parameter n = 4. Since the obtained value of apparent activation energy is close to the Mg-H bond-breaking energy, one can conclude that breaking this bond would be the rate-limiting step of the process.

AB - Producing green and efficient energy sources is a major challenge. As a consequence, the use of photovoltaic devices for conversion of light into electricity is growing worldwide. A lot of effort had been invested to create high-efficient solar cells, but their durability, stability, flexibility and efficiency at low light intensities are still unexplored. Here, we built a flexible solar cell made of p-doped, amorphized a-undoped and n-doped Sb2S3 solid carrier loaded with electrolyte. Indium tin oxide glass was the working electrode, and aluminium was the counter electrode. Every (p-a-n) flexible Sb2S3/solid carrier layers were obtained using a cheap casting/solvent evaporation technique, from a blend consisted of chitosan, polyethylene glycol and electrolyte containing 0.5 M potassium iodide and 0.05 M iodine, and corresponding synthesized amorphized a-undoped and p and n-doped Sb2S3 semiconductor. Results show that flexible Sb2S3 solar cell possesses good stability and efficiency of about 10% at 5% sun. Overall, our findings demonstrate for the first time that flexible solar cell can be made and used for low light intensity applications.
