AB - Polymer resins based on acrylates obtained from Bis-GMA (Bisphenol A glycide methacrylate), which is suitable for photopolymerization, are used in dentistry for various purposes due to the ease of application and the possibility to influence their properties by adding reinforcements of different shapes, crystal structure and chemical compositions. Reinforcement in the form of particles based on MgAlLDH (layered double hydroxide) deposited on silica obtained from rice husks on two substrates. A metal base and glass were used. The adhesive properties are important in order to see the possibility of using these materials in applications. In order to measure the adhesive properties of the material, the composite microhardness measurement method is used by applying different loads in order to evaluate the adhesion parameter that shows the effect of the coating on the substrate. It was compared to how a pure photopolymerizing acrylate matrix bonds with a chromium-based dental alloy substrate that is used in the production of different parts of dentures by bonding to a glass substrate. Then, it was compared how composite materials are bonded to both substrates. Adhesion was monitored through the change in wetting angle between the composites, and the results were compared with the results of microindentation. It was shown that the addition of composite particles increases the adhesive properties of the composite compared to the pure matrix and that better adhesion is achieved between the composite and the metal substrate than between the composite and the glass substrate.

AB - Acrylate polymers are used in several applications such as dentistry, medicine, and industry. The modification of their properties using the reinforcement is of key importance for the possible applications. Layered double hydroxides are materials that are easily synthesized by several techniques giving the possibility to modulate the chemical composition and morphology of the reinforcement and they consist of a divalent and a trivalent anion hydroxide and the layers can be exfoliated and thus provide a material interesting for composite reinforcement. In this paper, Mn was used as a divalent and Al as a trivalent cation. The obtained particles were used as reinforcement for the preparation of composites in 1, 3, and 5 wt% quantities and prepared samples were compared to the matrix consisting of PMMA. Physical mechanical properties of the sample having the best mechanical properties (with 3 wt% of MnAl-LDH filers) exhibited 6.38% modulus of elasticity, 27% hardness, and 10% tensile strength improved values compared to the clear PMMA matrix. Toughness was lowered in this sort of composite compared to the pure matrix. Highlights: MnAl-LDH-PMMA composites improved modulus, strength, hardness Loss of toughness is tolerable for 3 wt% reinforcement Viscoelastic properties are improved for composites compared to matrix.

A ZnO/ZnMn2O4 composite, II, has been prepared via thermal decomposition of I in an air atmosphere at 450 °C. XRPD, FTIR and FESEM analyses of II revealed the simultaneous presence of spherical nanoparticles of wurtzite ZnO and elongated nanoparticles of spinel ZnMn2O4. The specific surface area of II was determined by the BET method, whereas the volume and average size of the mesopores were calculated in accordance with the BJH method. The measurements of the mean size, polydispersity index and zeta potential showed colloidal instability of II. Two band gap values of 2.4 and 3.3 eV were determined using UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, while the measurements of photoluminescence revealed that II is active in the blue region of the visible spectrum. Testing of composite II as a pigmentary material showed that it can be used for the colouring of a ceramic glaze.

AB - In this study, the Cu-Zr-B ternary system was investigated as it has proven to be a promising composite material used in various industries, including aerospace, automotive, electronics, nuclear and tooling, among others. Owing to its versatility and a combination of desirable properties such as high strength and hardness, corrosion and wear resistance, and thermal stability, making it suitable for a wide range of applications. The effects of mechanical alloying (MA) parameters on the Cu-Zr-B properties, including ball-to-powder ratio, rotation speed, milling time, and milling atmosphere, were examined using the X-ray analysis, scanning electron microscopy, stereological analysis, and the Williamson-Hall analysis. Different mills, namely Atritor Mill and Turbula Shaker, were used in order to determine the effect that the type of mill has on the final structural parameters of the Cu-Zr-B. All results are given after 20 hours of mechanical alloying of the composite material. The rotation speed was around 300 rpm for both devices, and the ball-to-powder ratio was 10:1 for all the cases. It was shown that the ball size also plays a significant role in the final microstructural and morphological properties of the MA powders of the Cu-Zr-B. A comprehensive analysis showed that the powders produced in the Atritor mill (Powder 1, with a uniform ball size), as well as the powders produced in the Turbula where there was a range of different ball sizes used (Powder 2), showed lower values of dislocation density and crystalline size values compared to the powders produced in the Turbula with a uniform ball size (Powder 3). It is important to state that, with time, due to the plastic deformation mechanisms present, crystallite size decreases in all cases, with the lowest value again being powder 3.

AB - There is a global tendency to reduce the consumption of energy required for heating as well
as cooling buildings. Therefore, thermal insulation technology becoming important in
preventing both, the gain and loss of heat through the building envelope. This work aims to
evaluate the feasibility of using inexpensive raw materials such as kaolin and waste material
such as seashells and banana peel for fabrication of the sustainable anorthite-based porous
ceramics for thermal insulation. Kaolin was used as a source of Al2O3 and SiO2, seashells as a
source of CaO whereas banana peel was used as a pore former. The phase composition, bulk
density, open porosity, compressive strength, microstructure, and thermal conductivity of the
ceramic samples, were analyzed. The obtained results showed that the variation of pore former (banana peel) content and sintering temperature was an effective way to control the
thermo-mechanical properties of the obtained anorthite ceramics. Samples with open porosity
(1.4 – 45%), compressive strength (>15 MPa), bulk density (1.87-2.62 g/cm3
), and thermal
conductivity (0.097-3.67W/mK) were obtained after sintering of samples with different
percent of banana peel at 1100–1200 ◦C. It suggests that the obtained porous ceramics can be

abstract = "There is a global tendency to reduce the consumption of energy required for heating as well
as cooling buildings.
It suggests that the obtained porous ceramics can be
used for cost-effective thermal insulation of buildings.",

AB - To obtain the titania (TiO2) nanoparticles, the conventional sol-gel method under acidic conditions, pH around 2, was employed. After synthesis, the obtained powder was calcinated at 500 and 700 °C. The X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed that the heat-treated powder at 500 °C was anatase phase, while the heat-treated powder at 700 °C was the mixture of anatase and rutile phase. The crystallite size of the anatase phase at 500 °C was 15 nm whereas at 700 °C crystallite size of the anatase was 47 nm and 63 nm for the rutile phase. The characteristic FE–SEM images revealed well distributed spherical shaped nanoparticles. An average diameter of nanoparticles was in the range of 20 – 30 nm. The average size of nanoparticles in the sample treated at 500 °C was lower than the nanoparticles in the one treated at 700 °C. Therefore, the specific surface area of synthesized pure TiO2 after heat treatment at lower temperatures is higher, promising better absorption and photocatalytic activity.

AB - The study of an effect of iron doping on the structural, microstructural and mechanical properties of sintered iron-doped mullite is presented. The results of phase composition, performed in detail by Mössbauer spectroscopy and XRD analysis, revealed that all added iron was inside the mullite lattice forming the single phase up to 12% by weight of Fe2O3 and 1300 °C. Samples, which were processed at 1550 °C, contained secondary phases, hematite or magnetite, regardless of the amount of added iron. Furthermore, the addition of iron decreases the values of relative linear shrinkage comparing to the values of undoped one (~18%) while the densities of the sintered samples rise as well as their values of microhardness. Even though the density values were not too high (90 TD%), the obtained values of microhardness were excellent, 1634 HV0.1 for maximum iron content due to the characteristic mullite microstructure.

AB - Comprehensive study on effect of YAG amount on densification, creep resistance and room-temperature mechanical properties of Al2O3-YAG composite pressureless sintered at 1600 degrees C was conducted. The main goal was to optimize the amount of YAG in order to fabricate a composite with improved creep resistance and sufficiently good room-temperature mechanical properties. The composite was made by mixing a commercially available Al2O3 powder with fine YAG powder obtained by glycine-nitrate combustion synthesis starting from aluminum nitrate and yttrium nitrate. Increased driving force for sintering of fine YAG powder allowed fabrication of dense Al2O3-YAG composite with up to 30 vol% YAG. The presence of YAG was found to be very effective in improving creep resistance of Al2O3-YAG composite. Large Y3+ ions blocked diffusion along Al2O3 grain boundaries, reduced diffusivity and therefore enhanced creep resistance of Al2O3-YAG composite which continuously increased as the YAG amount increased. The presence of YAG was also found to improve mechanical properties such as hardness and elastic modulus. The improvement of these properties was ascribed to increased density of Al(2)O(3)YAG composites owing to high sintering activity of YAG powder. While fracture strength of the composite can be as high as that of monolithic Al2O3, fracture toughness of composite decreased continuously as the YAG content increased. The decrease was ascribed to transgranular fracture of both YAG and Al2O3 grains in samples containing larger amounts of YAG. The proper balance between fracture toughness and creep resistance was found in composite containing 18 vol% YAG which had considerably improved creep resistance accompanied by a relatively small decrease in fracture toughness.

AB - Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles were obtained by thermal decomposition of one-dimensional zinc-benzenepolycarboxylato complexes as single-source precursors at 450 °C in an air atmosphere. The mechanism and kinetics of thermal degradation of zinc-benzenepolycarboxylato complexes were analyzed under non-isothermal conditions in an air atmosphere. The results of X-ray powder diffraction and field emission scanning electron microscopy revealed hexagonal wurtzite structure of ZnO with an average crystallite size in the range of 39-47 nm and similar morphology. The band gap and the specific surface area of ZnO nanoparticles were determined using UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and the Brunauer, Emmett and Teller method, respectively. The photoluminescent, photocatalytic and antimicrobial properties of the ZnO nanoparticles were also examined. The best photocatalytic activity in the degradation of C. I. Reactive Orange 16 dye was observed for the ZnO powder where the crystallites form the smallest agglomerates. All ZnO nanoparticles showed excellent inhibitory effect against Gram-positive bacterium Staphylococcus aureus and Gram-negative bacterium Escherichia coli.

AB - This study discusses the possibility of fabrication of textile nanocomposites with antimicrobial activity against antibiotics-resistant bacterial strains and yeast. Modification of cotton fabric with oxalic acid solutions of different concentrations provided free carboxyl groups for binding of Cu2+ -ions from copper (II) sulfate solution which were further reduced with sodium borohydride in alkaline solution. An increase in the concentration of applied oxalic acid resulted in larger amounts of free carboxyl groups on the cotton fibers, Cu2+ -ions uptake and total amounts of Cu-based nanoparticles after reduction. XPS and XRD analyses suggested that nanoparticles mainly consisted of CuO with fractions of Cu2O. Fabricated textile nanocomposites ensured maximum reduction of Gram-negative E. coli ATCC 25922, E. coli NCTC 13846, E. coli ATCC BAA-2469, K. pneumoniae ATCC-BAA 2146 and P. aeruginosa ATCC 27853, Gram-positive bacteria S. aureus ATCC 25923 and S. aureus ATCC 43300 and yeast C. albicans ATCC 24433. Additionally, controlled release of Cu2+ -ions from fabrics into the physiological saline solution was obtained within 24 hours. © 2019, The Korean Fiber Society.

AB - This study discusses a novel approach for fabrication of floating photocatalyst which can be efficiently exploited for photodegradation of dyes in aqueous solutions. A fabrication of the floating photocatalyst consisted of two steps: transformation of the poly(ε-caprolactone) beads (PCLb) into poly(ε-caprolactone) foam (PCLf) with porous structure in supercritical carbon-dioxide and subsequent loading of PCLf with TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs). Morphological characterization of the PCLf before and after TiO2 NPs loading was carried out by FESEM. The presence of titanium on the surface and inside the PCLf was detected by EDX. Photocatalytical activity of the floating photocatalyst was investigated in aqueous solution of textile dyes C.I. Acid Orange 7 (AO7) and C.I. Basic Yellow 28 (BY28) which were exposed to lamp that simulates the sun light. In addition to sustainable floatability for a long period of time, developed floating photocatalyst exhibited high rate of photodegradation since the complete discoloration of AO7 and BY28 solutions and photocatalysts alone occurred after 300 and 180 min of illumination, respectively. Its photocatalytic activity was preserved after three repeated photodegradation cycles with unchanged chemical structure that was confirmed by FTIR analysis.

AB - The fabrication of antimicrobial textile nanocomposite by in situ synthesis of Cu-based nanoparticles on cotton fabrics modified with different polycarboxylic acids was discussed in this study. In order to evaluate the influence of carboxyl group content on Cu2+-ions adsorption, their subsequent reduction with sodium borohydride and formation of Cu-based nanoparticles, cotton fabrics were modified with succinic, citric and 1,2,3,4-butanetetracarboxylic acids. It was shown that the larger the number of carboxyl groups in applied acid, the larger the content of free carboxyl groups on the fibers and consequently, the larger the Cu2+-ions uptake and total amounts of Cu-based nanoparticles. On the basis of the XPS and XRD measurements, it was suggested that synthesized nanoparticles were mixture of Cu2O and CuO. Fabricated nanocomposites provided maximum reduction of Gram-negative bacterium E. coli and Gram-positive bacterium S. aureus and controlled release of Cu2+-ions in physiological saline solution which are necessary prerequisites for infection prevention.

AB - This study discusses the possibility of immobilization of colloidal TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) onto poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) beads and foams that could be utilized for the removal of textile dyes from water by photodegradation. PCL foams were fabricated by environmentally friendly treatment of PCL beads in supercritical carbon dioxide. PCL beads and foams loaded with colloidal TiO2 NPs were used as photocatalysts for the removal of the textile dyes C.I. Acid Orange 7 and C.I. Basic Yellow 28 from aqueous solutions (10 mg L-1) under illumination that simulated sunlight. Unlike the PCL beads, the PCL foams provided complete discoloration of the dye solution within 24 h of illumination. The PCL foams also exhibited excellent floatability that was maintained for more than four weeks. Additionally, their photocatalytic activity was preserved within three repeated photodegradation cycles, indicating that the floating photocatalyst provided superior photocatalytic activity compared to the non-floating PCL beads.

AB - Alumina/YAG composites (AYX_t) with high relative density (99.2 %TD) were successfully obtained by mixing commercial alumina powder with different volume fractions of yttrium aluminium garnet (Y3Al5O12-YAG; 7, 14, 21 and 28). YAG was synthetized by nitrate glycine reaction in the form of precursor powder. Polycrystalline YAG powder was obtained by calcination at 950 degrees C for 2 h. Additionally, obtained compositions were characterized by XRD, SEM, EDX and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. By XRPD analysis was found that the particle size of YAG powders lies in the nanometric range (being lower than 35 nm). By SEM microphotographs of composites were confirmed the formation of a conductive path consisting from mutually interconnected YAG particles. This was confirmed by the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The highest electrical conductivity of grain (K-g) and grain boundary (K-gb) at 700 degrees C amounted to 2.22x10(-2) ohm(-1)cm(-1) and 9.44x10(-3) ohm(-1) cm(-1), respectively, was measured in the composite containing 21 vol% of YAG.

AB - In situ synthesis of Cu/Cu2O nanoparticles on the cotton fabric discussed in this study relies on adsorption of Cu2+-ions by carboxylate groups generated through the TEMPO-mediated oxidation of cellulose and their subsequent reduction by sodium borohydride. In order to establish the influence of aldehyde and carboxylate groups on the nanoparticles formation, the duration of TEMPO-mediated oxidation was varied. Chemical changes induced by TEMPO-mediated oxidation were evaluated by titrimetric determination of the amounts of aldehyde and carboxylic groups in cotton and FTIR spectroscopy. The presence of Cu/Cu2O nanoparticles on the cotton fabric was confirmed by FE-SEM, AAS and XRD analyses. Antimicrobial activity of synthesized nanoparticles was tested against Gram-negative bacteria E. coli, Gram-positive bacteria S. aureus and fungi C. albicans. The extension of TEMPO oxidation time led to an increase of carboxylate group content and consequently, formation of larger amounts of Cu/Cu2O nanoparticles. All fabricated textile nanocomposites provided excellent antibacterial and acceptable antifungal activity. They also ensured a controlled release of Cu2+-ions in physiological solution which is an imperative for infection prevention.

AB - Atom transfer free radical polymerization (ATRP) was employed in a synthesis of graft polymer EVA-g-PMMAwith controlled length of side PMMA chains. Three steps of synthesis: partial hydrolysis of EVA, esterification with chloroacetyl chloride and ATRP grafting were performed to produce EVAOH, macroinitiator EVACl and grafted polymers G8020 (EVA/PMMA = 80/20 wt%) and G6040 (EVA/PMMA = 60/40 wt%). FTIR, Raman and NMR spectroscopy were used in the determination of the chemical structure and modification of EVA. Transmitted light and dark field microscopy showed higher affinity for coil formation of EVA-g-PMMA with longer PMMA side chains, i.e. G6040 compatibilizer. Morphological, thermal and adhesive properties of optical fiber adhesives of graft polymers and polymer blends poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate)-blend-poly(methyl methacrylate) (EVA/PMMA) compatibilized with 1 wt% of EVA-g-PMMA, were studied. Image analysis of SEM micrographs showed effective compatibilization with short grafted chains (G8020) that was indicated by lower porosity characteristics. TG/DTG analysis enabled determination of degree of hydrolysis and amount of chloro-functionalized groups. DSC analysis showed higher thermal stability of G8020 polymer. Single lap joint of adhesives/optical fibers were subjected to adhesive testing and obtained results for maximal force applied and adhesive failure suggested the visible influence of the length of graft chains on adhesion.

AB - Environmental-friendly pectin-TiO2nanocomposite aerogels were prepared via sol-gel process and subsequent drying under supercritical conditions. The first step includes dissolution of pectin in water, addition of proper amount of TiO2colloid and crosslinking reaction induced in the presence of tert-butanol and zinc ions. Then, the gels are subjected to the solvent exchange and supercritical CO2drying. The influence of TiO2nanoparticles on the textural, mechanical, thermal and antibacterial properties of aerogels was investigated. Results indicate that in the presence of TiO2nanoparticles (NPs) mechanical, thermal and antimicrobial properties of pectin-based aerogels are improved in comparison to the control pectin aerogels. It should be emphasized that the thermal conductivity of pectin-based aerogels (0.022–0.025 W m−1K−1) is lower than the thermal conductivity of air. Generally, the results propose that the pectin-TiO2nanocomposite aerogels, as bio-based material, might have potential application for the storage of temperature-sensitive food.

AB - We investigate samples of austenitic materials - stainless steel and iron-based superalloy - which are widely used at high temperatures and pressures. The samples were exposed to Nd(3+):YAG laser pulses with a wavelength of 1064 nm and a pulse duration of 170 ps. We employ different pulse energies and number of pulses. The spots appearing after the laser irradiation were examined by optical and scanning electron microscopy and analyzed by energy-dispersive spectroscopy. We also perform Vickers microhardness tests. We discuss the microstructure changes caused by different energy and number of pulses in air and in a He-enriched atmosphere with the aim to determine optimum laser parameters in surface-treatment technology.

AB - The adsorption properties of sepiolite from Andrici, Serbia, were studied by inverse gas chromatography at zero and finite surface coverage between 483 and 513 K. The thermodynamic parameters (free energy, enthalpy, entropy) of adsorption, as well as the dispersive and specific components of the free energy of adsorption and the acid/base of the solid were calculated from the IGC data at zero coverage. The K(D)/K(A) ratio indicated basis character. The adsorption isotherms were used to estimate the specific surface area, isosteric heat of adsorption and the adsorption energy distribution for the adsorption of organic molecules. abstract = "The adsorption properties of sepiolite from Andrici, Serbia, were studied by inverse gas chromatography at zero and finite surface coverage between 483 and 513 K.
