AB - Determination of specific activity concentration of radioisotopes in environmental samples can be used to assess the long-term kinetics of the decline of radioisotopes. Based on the obtained activity concentrations of tritium in the Danube, the effective ecological half-life is estimated. Assuming that the Danube in Belgrade is not affected by nuclear power plants, even though it is positioned downstream of the Paks Nuclear Power Plant in Hungary, a slow decline of tritium was observed. The effective ecological half-life of tritium was also determined after correction by subtracting its components originating from cosmic radiation and the atmospheric transfer from nuclear facilities worldwide.

AB - This paper presents distribution and seasonal variations of tritium, radioactive isotope of hydrogen, in Sava River in Belgrade. Tritium besides its natural origin also has an artificial origin, through human activity including the operation of nuclear power plants, nuclear weapons manufacturing and atomic bomb tests. Knowing the concentration of tritium in the Sava River in Belgrade is important because it is located downstream from the Krško Nuclear Power Plant in Slovenia. Analysis of tritium concentrations in surface water samples were done in composite monthly samples during 2017-2022. Tritium activity was determined by liquid scintillation spectrometer using electrolytic enrichment. Seasonal variations were estimated by determination of average monthly concentrations and seasonal indices.

AB - This paper presents application of a nuclear technique for the analysis of radioactivity in supplements using gas proportional counter as well as application of analytical technique Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-MS) in order to characterize the radioactivity contents and stability of the chemical structures for commercial supplements. Gas proportional counter enables to determination of gross alpha and gross beta activity in the environmental samples, where they are present as ultra trace elements. Also, MALDI-MS method is used, since it represents an excellent analytical technique for detecting large number of biologically important molecules, such as commercial supplements.

AB - The construction sector is responsible for approximately 39% of energy use and process-related carbon dioxide emissions. Mixing waste materials into concrete, as a substitute for cement and/or aggregate, increases energy efficiency and sustainability in general. Additionally, pressure on the environment is decreasing by reducing the amount of exploitation of natural raw materials. On the other hand, the rapid progress of the electronic industry has led to the generation of a large amount of electrical waste before the end of its useful life. Disposal of old monitors and TV screens, i.e. their cathode-ray tubes (CRT), represents a major problem for the environment because CRT waste is classified as hazardous due to its high lead content. This paper deals with an overview of investigations on CRT waste utilization in cement materials in order to increase sustainability and encourage a circular economy in the construction sector.

abstract = "The construction sector is responsible for approximately 39% of energy use and process-related carbon dioxide emissions. This paper deals with an overview of investigations on CRT waste utilization in cement materials in order to increase sustainability and encourage a circular economy in the construction sector., Građevinski sektor je odgovoran za približno 39% potrošnje energije i emisija ugljendioksida vezanih za date procese. AB - The applicability of solid bricks waste in geopolymerization technique was considered. Waste samples were characterized in terms of mineralogical composition by XRD prior to mechanical testing. XRD analysis showed that both brick samples contained anorthite, wollastonite, and mullite as the main components. The compressive strength investigation was carried out by screening method with three geopolymer mixtures. Geopolymer mixtures were prepared with alkaline activators; the mixtures were poured into molds and air-dried for 28 days. The compressive strength of samples was measured according to the standard SRPS EN 12390-3:2010 for cubic samples. The compressive strength values ranged from 9.8 MPa for the newer solid brick, 10.2 MPa for the older solid brick, and 10.5 MPa for the solid brick mix waste geopolymer sample. The most likely underlying reason for the higher compressive strength results of the older solid brick and the mixed sample is their mineral composition, i.e. higher proportion of aluminosilicate. However, all samples showed satisfactory compressive strengths, and it represents an excellent basis for further research.

AB - Tritium levels in natural waters today have a similar value to the concentration before thermonuclear bomb testing conducted between 1954 and 1963. Because of the low concentration of this radioisotope, the analysis requires enrichment techniques to produce low detection limit, accurate results and to reduce uncertainties. This analysis includes preliminary distillation, electrolytic enrichment of the samples, the second distillation, and measurement on ultra low-level liquid scintillation spectrometer. The enrichment system consists of 16 electrolytic cells, each with a capacity of 250 ml, placed in the freezer and connected to a direct current source. One cell contains spike water with known tritium concentration and is used for enrichment factor determination. The initial volume for all samples is 250 ml. Na2O2 is used as an electrolyte to make the solution alkaline. Each cell has a gas outlet to ensure the escape of gases H2 and O2. In order to obtain a high enrichment factor, the system works on 5 A, to reduce the initial volume of the samples by 10-15 times. After electrolysis, second distillation must be performed to eliminate electrolyte. 8 ml of water sample after the second distillation is mixed with a scintillation cocktail in polyethylene vials and measured on a liquid scintillation spectrometer Quantulus 1220. At the end of the electrolytic enrichment process, the final volumes of the samples can be different, which causes different enrichment between the cells. To eliminate this influence, the final volume of all enrichment samples can be normalized at one value. In order to determine the corrected count rates obtained for each sample, the separation factor must be first calculated, taking into account initial volume, normalized final volume, count rate for spike water (after enrichment), count rate for spike water (before enrichment), and background count rate. In the example of one electrolysis, with 15 samples of drinking water, precipitation, and surface water, and one sample of spike water, with 670 Ah and an enrichment factor of 8.10, the final volume is normalized on a value of 18 ml. The calculated separation factor was 4.88. The corrected count rates for samples vary from 0 to 9.6 %, which causes a change in the final activity concentration of tritium from 0 to 22.2 %.

Previous research indicates the possibility of CRT glass utilization in the production of bricks, ceramic tiles, and special rooms for the disposal of nuclear waste or as an aggregate in construction. Also, the partial substitution of cement with fine ground CRT glass reduces the amount of its consumption, increasing the level of sustainability of this process. This paper deals with the investigation of CRT glass usage in cement materials, in order to evaluate the possibility of its use in mortar-matrix for the immobilization of liquid radioactive waste.

AB - This work presents the natural radioactivity distribution of 21 surface soil samples taken in the city of Novi Sad, Serbia. The analysis for radioactivity was performed using a gas low-level proportional counter for gross alpha and gross beta activity, while the specific activities of radionuclides were determined using HPGe detectors. The gross alpha activity of 20 samples was below the minimum detectable concentration (MDC), while in 1 sample it was 243 Bq kg−1; the gross beta activity ranged from the MDC (11 samples) to 566 Bq kg−1. The gamma spectrometry measurements showed naturally occurring radionuclides 226Ra, 232Th, 40K, and 238U in all investigated samples, with average values (Bq kg−1) of 33.9, 36.7, 513.8, and 34.7, respectively. Natural radionuclide 235U was detected in 18 samples with activity concentrations in the range of 1.3–4.1 Bq kg−1, while in the other 3 samples, the values were below the MDC. The artificial 137Cs radionuclide was detected in 90 percent of the samples, with a maximum value of 21 Bq kg−1, while the other artificial radionuclides were not detected. Based on the obtained concentrations of natural radionuclides, hazard indexes were estimated, and radiological health risk was assessed. The results present the absorbed gamma dose rate in the air, annual effective dose, radium equivalent activity, external hazard index, and lifetime cancer risk.

AB - In this study, the applicability of construction and demolition waste (C&DW) in geopolymerization technology was investigated. The C&DW components, concrete and solid bricks, were collected from demolition sites in Belgrade, Republic of Serbia. The concrete sample came from a demolished fifty-year-old construction road, while the remains of solid bricks originated from a 1930s building. Prior to mechanical testing, the C&DW components were characterized by XRD analysis for their mineralogical composition. The results showed that the concrete waste consisted mainly of quartz (SiO2) and calcite (CaCO3), while the brick waste sample contained anorthite from the feldspar group (CaAl2Si2O8), wollastonite (Ca0.957Fe0.043O3Si) and mullite (Al2.4O4.8SiO6). The mechanical properties were examined using the screening method on three geopolymer mixtures, one of each mixture of concrete and brick powders and a mixture of both C&DW components. According to the standard SRPS EN 12390-3:2010 for cubic samples, the geopolymer samples were prepared with alkaline activators for testing the compressive strength as the dominant parameter in the mortar and concrete evaluation. The compressive strength values increased in the range of 2.4 MPa for concrete, 10.2 MPa for brick, and 10.8 MPa for the mixed geopolymer sample. The low compressive strength result of the concrete sample was the consequence of the mineral composition, i.e., the absence of aluminosilicate. However, the brick and the sample with a combination of both types of waste showed moderately satisfactory compressive strength, which could be the starting point for further investigations.

AB - The development of energy-efficient and low-carbon geopolymer-based paving blocks made from waste, as an environmental-friendly material, was evaluated. Ground concrete (GC) and solid brick (SB) powder, as the representatives of construction and demolition waste (C&DW), with the addition of fly ash (FA) and silica fume (SF), were used. Waste samples were characterized in terms of surface functional groups and radioactivity. The FT-IR spectra showed the required amorphous or semi-crystalline alumino-silicate structure. The gamma spectrometry confirmed waste samples' radiological safety. Hardened geopolymer samples were subjected to physical-mechanical investigation comprising of density, water content, compressive and flexural strengths determination. Based on strength characteristics, the three best prototype mixtures were selected and subjected to further compressive strength determination and durability assessment. Prototype sample SBFASFp1, with a compressive strength of 18.7 MPa, was shown the highest value of all samples, almost the same as the corresponding SBFASF1 sample. Freeze-thaw and the subsequent carbonation tests, as durability indicators, showed that the SBFASF1 sample had the slightest strength decrease, making it most durable in these conditions. These satisfactory test results showed the favorable effects of alternatives to cementitious materials, encouraging their utilization and contributing to the sustainability of the construction sector.

AB - The utilization of construction and demolition debris in industrial wastewater treatment by sorption of Co2+ and Ni2+ ions was investigated. Selected waste composites are cost-effective and locally available, still their sorption character-istics and application are not sufficiently investigated. The samples of concrete, facade, ceramic materials, and asphalt were characterized in terms of mineral and surface composition, radioactivity, and stability at different pH values, as well as pH values of suspension and filtrate and electrical conductivity of the fil-trate. The sorption capacities were determined in batch experimental conditions in one and multi-component solutions. Characterization showed different crystal structures and mineralogical compositions of components. The results of gamma spectrometry confirmed the radiological safety of samples. Based on stability testing results, waste materials are suitable for further utilization and do not pose any risk to the environment. The overall sorption results suggested that cement-based materials, in addition to high affinity for the tested ions, represent a sorbent that binds contaminants firmly enough, reduces their mobility and bioa-vailability, and are suitable for removing Co2+ and Ni2+ ions from wastewaters.

AB - Elevation in the electronics industry has experienced a significant increase in the amount of waste generated, resulting in the generation of a substantial amount of electrical waste (E-waste). The excessive usage and production of cathode-ray tubes (CRT), a critical component of older monitors and screens, has become a significant environmental issue globally over the past few decades. With the advent of novel technologies, CRTs have been almost entirely replaced. It is now essential to develop new and renewable methods to manage CRT glass waste. The reuse of CRT waste glass for the manufacturing of new products or as an admixture to existing ones presents a significant opportunity, and thus it is obligatory to find contemporary ways to recycle this waste. Grounded CRT waste glass has been found to have a positive impact when used as a fine aggregate, but it is classified as hazardous due to its high lead content. However, after comprehensive series of cleaning and grinding the utilization of CRT glass can be beneficial in various fields. This paper focuses on reviewing recent developments related to the reuse of CRTs, and the aim is to evaluate the feasibility of its safe application in the art field.

AB - The advances in the electronic industry have led to a generation of an extensive amount of electrical waste (E-waste) before the end of its proper life span. Excessive usage and production of cathode-ray tubes (CRT), which is the fundamental part of old monitors and screens, has become an immense problem worldwide regarding the environmental issues, since the last few decades thin-film transistors (TFT) and liquid crystal display (LCD) replaced CRTs almost entirely. Consequently, it is of crucial importance to expand and deploy new, renewable methods to manage CRT glass waste. There is an appreciable prospective to use CRT waste glass for new products manufacture, or as an admixture to existing ones, hence the requirement for reusing this kind of waste is favorable. Many investigations have confirmed the positive effect of using grounded CRT waste glass as a fine aggregate. However, this waste is classified as hazardous due to the high lead content. Mixing CRT glass with mortar constructively decreases the amount of cement consumption. Features of this paper relate to a review of recent developments regarding the reuse of CRTs in cementitious materials. Emphasis was placed on their physico-mechanical properties to evaluate the possibility of CRT usage in mortar mixtures.

AB - A novel approach for rapid 89,90Sr determination in seawater samples is developed. For the first time in the radioanalytical application, the features of the synthetic zeolite Z4A and a highly selective material for Sr separation were synergically employed. Seawater composition significantly reduces Sr yield on highly selective solid-phase extraction materials, making the preconcentration step essentially important but laborious and time-consuming. To address this issue, the ability of zeolite 4A to concentrate the Sr from the seawater matrix was employed. With the proposed method, two important goals were achieved: (i) simple preconcentration of Sr that can be conducted directly at the sampling site, enabling a rapid procedure for 89,90Sr determination in emergencies, and (ii) high and stable Sr recoveries (89 ± 4%) necessary for lowering detection limits. Strontium is effectively separated from 1 L of seawater in less than 1.5 h, which is especially important in emergency situations, such as the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident. Minimum detectable activities achieved for 89Sr:90Sr activity ratio ∼10:1 were 0.74 Bq/L for 89Sr, and 1.47 Bq/L for 90Sr, detected by Cherenkov counting, 36–38 h after separation, and 30 min counting time.

AB - The quality of drinking water should be monitored and analyzed with the aim of determination of water pollution and to minimize health hazards. From a radiological point of view, drinking water may contain natural and artificial radionuclides. One of the radionuclides that can occur in drinking water is tritium. Tritium, as the only radioactive isotope of hydrogen, occurs naturally as a cosmogenic radioisotope in the stratosphere but also has an anthropogenic origin. This study presents the results of some physico-chemical analysis and tritium activity determination carried out for natural water sources in the vicinity of Smederevska Palanka. Water samples from eleven natural water sources were analysed: (source “Veliki Sipovac” (Azanja), source “Pinosava” (Kusadak), source “Vrelo” (Glibovac), source “Vidovača” (Vodice), source “Mineral water” (Vodice), source “Mineral water” (Cerovac), source “Sveta Trojica” (Cerovac), source “Šiljakovac” (Ratari), source “Klis” (Golobok), source “Palanački Kiseljak” (Smederevska Palanka), source “Sveta Petka” (Smederevska Palanka)), in order to determine possible contamination, because the local population is supplied with drinking water from these springs. Physico-chemical characterization was performed measuring pH, total dissolved solids (TDS) and conductivity. The pH values were measured using InoLab pH meter WTW with glass electrode SenTix 81. The conductivity of the samples was measured using Conductometer InoLab WTW Cond7110 at 20°C. TDS measurement was based on the weight of the solid residue remained after evaporation of 40 ml of sample and subsequent drying at 105°C. For tritium activity determination samples were distilled and electrolytically enriched using direct current source SORENSEN DCR60-B30. After electrolytic enrichment samples were measured by Ultra Low Level Liquid Scintillation Spectrometer Quantulus 1220. Conductivity and pH were measured before and after distillation of water samples. Some of investigated waters are naturally acidic and measured values for pH and conductivity show different results for samples before and after distillation. TDS has a higher value for natural mineral waters. In accordance with the legislation in the Republic of Serbia elevated tritium levels in water samples may indicate the presence of other artificial radionuclides. If tritium concentration exceeds allowed value, additional analysis is required. In that case it is necessary to perform gamma spectrometric analysis of the content of artificial radionuclides or analysis of 90Sr. The permissible value of tritium in drinking water is 100 Bq/l. All analyzed waters in this study meet the legal regulations and from the radiation point of view can be used for drinking. The annual effective dose was calculated based on the tritium concentration in the investigated samples for different age groups. The obtained results are in accordance with legislation.

AB - Comprehensive needs for environmental protection are imposed by the prerogative of preserving natural resources, i.e. efficient usage of materials and energy. Therefore, there is an urgent need for different waste materials recycling or reusing. However, advances in new technologies in the electronics industry are leading to the problem of disposing of different types of E-waste, often discarded even before its usual time. This research represents an overview of E-waste glass utilization, like cathode ray tubes (CRT) from old computer monitors and TV screens, in mortar matrices for radionuclide immobilization. Due to its properties, mortar is used for liquid radioactive waste (LRW) solidification. Large quantities of cement, aggregates, and water are used annually for mortar and concrete manufacture. Also, cement production requires the consumption of large amounts of energy, i.e. the use of non-renewable fossil fuels. Nevertheless, mixing waste materials with mortar effectively reduces the amount of cement consumption. Aspects of this paper relate to a review of recent developments regarding the use of E-waste in cementitious materials. Emphasis was placed on their physico-mechanical properties to evaluate the possibility of CRT usage in mortar matrix for LRW immobilization.

AB - Construction and demolition debris (C&DD) is among the fastest-growing waste streams due to accelerated urbanization processes and overall economic development. Accordingly, developing attractive and cost-effective methods and creating more valuable technologies that could use this waste type more efficiently and solve possible environmental problems is one of the main challenges in research nowadays. The C&DD-based materials design has attracted the attention of researchers, offering to reduce the impact of production on the environment. The benefits arising from this concept include the reduction of C&DD in municipal landfills and the preservation of large quantities of natural raw materials, e.g. cement, aggregates, and water. Hence, the production costs, energy consumption, and carbon footprint could be reduced simultaneously. However, the results of this promising technology are not sufficiently integrated into actual practice. This new material development concept proposes a four-step approach. The first phase involves designing a mixture for the geopolymer material. The second phase consists of basic physico-mechanical properties determination: density, absorption, and compressive strength. The next stage implies durability testing. The fourth step, often omitted in basic research, suggests the best geopolymer formulations for the delivery and investigation of eco-friendly and marketable prefabricated building product prototypes, for various applications, e.g. pavements or wall blocks.

abstract = "Construction and demolition debris (C&DD) is among the fastest-growing waste streams due to accelerated urbanization processes and overall economic development. The fourth step, often omitted in basic research, suggests the best geopolymer formulations for the delivery and investigation of eco-friendly and marketable prefabricated building product prototypes, for various applications, e.g. pavements or wall blocks.",

AB - The utilization of construction and demolition debris in industrial wastewater treatment by sorption of Co2+ and Ni2+ ions was investigated. Selected waste composites are cost-effective and locally available; still their sorption characteristics and application are not sufficiently investigated. The samples of concrete, facade, ceramic materials and asphalt were characterized in terms of min- eral and surface composition, radioactivity, and stability at different pH values, as well as pH values of suspension and filtrate and electrical conductivity of the filtrate. The sorption capacities were determined in batch experimental conditions in one- and multi-component solutions. Characteriza- tion showed different crystal structures and mineralogical compositions of components. The results of gamma spectrometry confirmed the radiological safety of samples. Based on stability testing re- sults, waste materials are suitable for further utilization and do not pose any risk to the environment. The overall sorption results suggested that cement-based materials, in addition to high affinity for the tested ions, represent a sorbent that binds contaminants firmly enough, reduces their mobility and bioavailability, and are suitable for removing Co2+ and Ni2+ ions from wastewaters.

AB - The probability of Cs+ and Co2+ ions retention by immobilization processes in the cement matrix was determinate as the subject of analyses: matrix design, water/cement ratio, and structure porosity. Comparison of experimental results was accomplished by Hespe standard leaching method. Diffusion and semi-empirical models were used for the assessment of the washing rate as a function of time. The higher value of cement matrix mechanical resistance corresponds to a lower value of Co2+ and Cs+ ions leaching. The Co2+ leaching level was more than two orders of magnitude less than the leaching level of Cs+. The influence of bentonite and zeolite on Co2+ leaching reduction was significantly smaller in comparison with Cs+, while zeolite had a higher Cs+ and Co2+ sorption ability than bentonite. Under static leaching conditions, the contribution of diffusion to the total transport of ions in the matrix porous medium was dominant. The contribution of matrix dissolution was insignificant concerning the dominant contribution of diffusion and surface washing. The semi-empirical model showed a better approximation of the Co2+ and Cs+ ions laboratory leaching process.

AB - Organic substances that form soluble complexes with radionuclide ions are often used as chemical decontamination agents, improving their removal from contaminated surfaces, but at the same time complicating the treatment of liquid radioactive waste and increasing the mobility of radionuclides in the environment. In this paper, the influence of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and diethylenetriaminepentacetic acid (DTPA) on the removal of Sr radionuclides from simulated liquid radioactive waste using synthetic (zeolite 4A) and natural zeolite (clinoptilolite) was studied. The efficiency of Sr ion removal was investigated in batch conditions, as a function of the type and concentration of complexants, and the type of zeolite, using inactive strontium as a chemical analogue of 90Sr. The results obtained at different molar ratios Sr/complexant (1:0, 10:1, 1:1 and 1:10) show that the increasing concentration of DTPA in the solution inhibits the sorption of Sr ions more significantly than EDTA on both zeolites, and that Sr is sorbed more efficiently in the presence of both complexants using synthetic than natural zeolite.
