AB - Laves phases (AB2) are alloys whose metal hydrides have been proposed to improve the energy density of Ni-MH batteries. In case of ZrV2-based battery materials, various amounts of different modifiers, such as Ti and Ni are used to improve their performance. The influence of Ni modifier in ZrV2 C15 Laves phase was investigated at atomic level by the 181TaPerturbed Angular Correlation (PAC) measurements of Zr(V0.33Ni0.67)2, Zr(V0.33Ni0.67)2.4 and Zr27V18Ni55 compounds. The dominant C15-type crystallographic structures were found in all samples by the X-ray diffraction, with the minority presence of other phases, mostly various oxides. The 181Ta-PAC preliminary results showed four different electric quadrupole interactions which give similar values for electric field gradients and non-zero asymmetry parameters in all investigated compounds.

AB - Nanoparticle materials have become a promising candidate for a new kind of storage media based on thermally induced memory effects due to the possibility to tailor their magnetic properties and behaviour. In this study, we have investigated whether the magnetic memory effects could appear at high, industry accessible temperatures including the possibility of thermal data inscription. Investigated iron oxide nanoparticles were synthesized by poliol method, which has been modified in order to allow control of particle agglomeration and consequently magnetic properties. Structure, morphology and the degree of nanoparticle agglomeration were studied by X-Ray diffraction, Transmission Electron Microscopy and Dynamic Light Scattering techniques, while magnetic properties as well as memory effects were measured on a commercial SQUID-based magnetometer. Results of the study confirmed that in super spin glass magnetite nanoparticles, magnetic memory effects can be observed up to 200 K which represents much higher temperatures in comparison to those achieved in spin glasses and other glassy materials. Procedures of writing and reading (inscribing and retrieving) of digital information in such a material were demonstrated and discussed in details.

AB - Nanocomposites (HAp/iron oxide), made of hydroxyapatite (HAp) and ferrimagnetic iron oxide, were synthesized by high-energy ball milling a mixture consisting of iron oxide nanoparticles and the starting materials used for the HAp synthesis: calcium hydrogen phosphate anhydrous (CaHPO4), and calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2). Two HAp/iron oxide samples with the magnetic phase content of 12 and 30 wt.% were prepared and their microstructure, morphology and magnetic properties were analysed by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Furthermore, the measurement of particle size distribution was performed by laser scattering, and temperature/field dependence on magnetization was determined. X-ray diffraction data confirmed the formation of two-phased samples (HAp and spinel iron oxide) without the presence of any other parasite phase. The shape of particles was nearly spherical in both samples, ranging from only a few to several tens of nanometres in diameter. These particles formed agglomerates with the most common value of the number-based particle size distribution of 380 and 310 nm for the sample with 12 and 30 wt.% of iron oxide, respectively. Magnetization data showed that both HAp/iron oxide composites had superparamagnetic behaviour at room temperature. © 2019 University of Novi Sad, Faculty of Technology. All rights reserved.

AB - Ferrofluids based on magnesium substituted magnetite nanoparticles MgxFe3−xO4 (x = 0.1; 0.2; 0.4) were synthesised by a chemical co-precipitation method. Their physical properties have been compared with those of the magnetite based ferrofluid obtained by the same synthesis route. Both XRD and TEM studies showed particle size decrease with the increased Mg content while DLS experiments pointed to the more prominent aggregation of Mg-containing nanoparticles. Magnetic properties investigation conducted on the powder (i.e. dried) specimens showed decrease of magnetization values with increased Mg content except for the lowest concentration of x = 0.1 where substantial saturation magnetization rise of about 40% was recorded at room temperature. Heating abilities of the studied ferrofluids under the applied AC fields (SAR values) also showed decreasing trend with the increased Mg content even for x = 0.1 sample despite its elevated magnetization value. This trend has been understood as a consequence of the changed intrinsic nanoparticle properties such as size and magnetic anisotropy, as well as contribution of a collective behaviour due to an increased nanoparticle aggregation in Mg-doped systems.

AB - Spherical gamma-Fe2O3 nanoparticles with the narrow size distribution of (5 +/- 1) nm were synthesized by the method of thermal decomposition from iron acetyl acetonate precursor. The existence of super spin-glass state at low temperatures and in low applied magnetic fields was confirmed by DC magnetization measurements on a SQUID magnetometer. The comprehensive investigation of magnetic relaxation dynamics in low-temperature region was conducted through the measurements of single-stop and multiple stop ZFC memory effects, ZFC magnetization relaxation, and AC susceptibility measurements. The experimental findings revealed the peculiar change of magnetic relaxation dynamics at T approximate to 10 K, which arose as a consequence of simultaneous existence of different relaxation processes in Fe2O3 nanoparticle system. Complementarity of the applied measurements was utilized in order to single out distinct relaxation processes as well as to elucidate complex relaxation mechanisms in the investigated interacting nanoparticle system.

AB - Nanorod ferrous oxalate dihydrate (FeC2O4 x 2H(2)O) which had been synthesized by the microemulsion method, was used as a precursor in the thermal decomposition process performed in air atmosphere. The formation of nanocrystalline hematite as the final product was preceded by the appearence of an intermediate product. Comprehensive study comprising several complementary techniques (x-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, selected area electron diffraction, thermogravimetric/differential thermal analyses and SQUID magnetometry) confirmed that the intermediate product corresponds to the poorly crystalline Fe2O3. Due to the specific nanorod shape and poorly crystalline structure, the investigated Fe2O3 showed high coercive field value of similar to 0.5 T at 5 K. Special attention in this study was devoted to the peculiar magnetic properties of poorly crystalline Fe2O3, which were thoroughly investigated by employing sophisticated experimental procedures such as relaxation of thermoremanent magnetization for different cooling fields, zero field and field cooled memory effects as well as aging experiments for different waiting times. At low temperatures and weak applied magnetic fields, the investigated system behaves similarly to spin glasses, manifesting slow, collective relaxation dynamics of magnetic moments through memory, rejuvenation and aging effects.

AB - Cobalt 3D powder particles were successfully prepared by galvanostatic electrodeposition. The electrodeposited cobalt powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and SQUID magnetometry. It was shown that the morphology, structure and magnetic properties of cobalt particles were closely associated and could be easily controlled by adjusting the electrodeposition process parameters. The morphology of cobalt powder particles was strongly affected by the hydrogen evolution reaction as a parallel reaction to cobalt electrodeposition. Depending on the applied current density, two types of powder particles were formed: dendrites at lower and spongy-like particles at higher current densities. Morphologies and structures of powder particles were correlated with their magnetic properties, and compared with those of the bulk cobalt. In comparison with the properties of bulk cobalt, the obtained 3D structutes exhibited a decreased saturation magnetization (M-S), but an enhanced coercivity (H-C), which was explained by their peculiar morphology.

AB - The single-phase polycrystalline samples of Y-2(Cu1-xMgx)(2)O-5, x = 0.0, 0.05, 0.15 were successfully synthesized by a modified self-propagating high temperature synthesis. Effects of Mg+2 substitution for Cu+2 in metamagnetic Y2Cu2O5 on its crystal structure and magnetic properties have been analyzed by X-ray diffraction and magnetic measurements performed within 2-300 K range. Mg doping was found to introduce small distortions in the main intradimmer superexchange paths so that ferromagnetic correlations decrease with Mg concentration. More significant impact of Cu substitution was found on the low temperature magnetism due to the breaking of infinite Cu-O chains. The formation of finite size chains introduces low temperature paramagnetic contribution and reduction in Neel temperature. Overall results give a strong indication that the antiferromagnetic ordering as well as metamagnetism persists up to the 15% of the Mg concentration. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - The structure and lattice dynamics of mechanically activated BaTiO3 was investigated in this study. Phonon behavior and crystal structure stability of the obtained nanocrystalline BaTiO3 were discussed from the view point of crystallite size effects and microstrains induced by mechanical activation. A systematic study of Raman responses indicates that mechanical activation has a distinct influence on BaTiO3 lattice spectra affecting the intensity, width, and position of Raman modes. The measured Raman spectra were deconvoluted and phonon parameters were estimated. It has been established that applied mechanical activation leads to a significant decrease in the mean crystallites size, but nevertheless enables formation of tetragonal nanocrystalline BaTiO3.

AB - Nanostructured cadmium selenide (CdSe) and lead sulfide (PbS) semiconductors were prepared in a poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate-co-acrylic acid) matrix. The obtained nanoparticles were characterized by using optical and structural methods. Co-polymers were synthesized in two different molar ratios of pDMAEMA: acrylic acid monomer units (1 : 2, 1 : 1). Transmission electron microscopy analysis confirmed the presence of nano-sized CdSe and PbS particles. In the case of CdSe, a shift of the onset of the optical absorption toward lower wavelengths was observed. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that both CdSe and PbS nanoparticles have cubic crystal structure.

AB - In this paper, we present the results of a systematic study of nonequilibrium dynamics in a strongly interacting super spin glass (SSG) nanoparticle La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 system by alternating current (ac) susceptibility measurements. Cole-Cole analysis of the obtained data revealed the simultaneous existence of two separated relaxation processes, which can be assigned to the relaxation of different magnetic entities. Along with the expected relaxation of the collective SSG phase, the existence of individual, nonagglomerated particles, which do not take part in the collective phase and relax independently, was proposed. A full dynamical scaling analysis was performed in order to elucidate the nature of the transition to a low-temperature SSG state in the interacting La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 nanoparticle sample.

AB - A modified solid-state combustion route was developed for the preparation of nanocrystalline manganite La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 in a single-step process, using metal nitrates and glucose/KNO3 redox mixture. The obtained sample was found to crystallize within O type of orthorhombic perovskite structure (space group Pnma), without the presence of other structural phases or impurities. Nanoparticles are found to have particle size in the range 12-35 nm, and to be highly crystalline without the presence of amorphous surface layer. Magnetic measurements show that nanoparticles display bulk-like magnetic properties, with ferromagnetic phase transition at 125 K and the absence of superparamagnetic or spin-glass behavior. AB - Polycrystalline samples of Y2Cu2O5 were for the first time sintered from precursors obtained by two combustion routes - the glycine-nitrate method (sample S1) and a modified self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (sample S2). The detailed X-ray diffraction analysis has confirmed that both samples are well crystallized and single phase, with the high crystallization degree and cation ordering within a Cu sublattice. Magnetic characterization has shown magnetic behavior typical of pure Y2Cu2O5. The distinctive advantages of these new synthesis routes in comparison to the ceramic sintering are in simplification of the overall procedure as well as in a significant reduction of synthesis duration from several days down to 31 h (S1) or 12 h (S2). AB - A new synthesis route for obtaining a single-phase hexagonal YMnO3 was developed, based on the annealing of the amorphous precursor powder obtained by the glycine-nitrate combustion method. The process was monitored by XRD as well as by magnetic and heat capacity measurements. The analysis of these data shows that precursor powder undergoes a gradual phase transformation that depends on the annealing temperature. The metastable orthorhombic YMnO3 phase is the first to appear at temperatures below 700 degrees C, while a mixture of ortho- and hexa-phases was found to exist within the 700-900 degrees C range. An almost complete conversion to hexaphase occurs at 900-1000 degrees C, but to obtain the pure, well crystallized h-YMnO3 phase an annealing temperature of 1300 degrees C was necessary. The synthesis method applied in this work has been proved to be more convenient for obtaining single-phase h-YMnO3 than by a solid state reaction. In addition, it is capable of producing sample free of parasitic phases that are often present in specimens obtained by other synthesis methods. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. AB - The evolution of the magnetic state, crystal structure and microstructure parameters of nanocrystalline zinc-ferrite, tuned by thermal annealing of similar to 4 nm nanoparticles, was systematically studied by complementary characterization methods. Structural analysis of neutron and synchrotron x-ray radiation data revealed a mixed cation distribution in the nanoparticle samples, with the degree of inversion systematically decreasing from 0.25 in an as-prepared nanocrystalline sample to a non-inverted spinel structure with a normal cation distribution in the bulk counterpart. The results of DC magnetization and Mossbauer spectroscopy experiments indicated a superparamagnetic relaxation in similar to 4 nm nanoparticles, albeit with different freezing temperatures T-f of 27.5 K and 46 K, respectively. The quadrupole splitting parameter decreases with the annealing temperature due to cation redistribution between the tetrahedral and octahedral sites of the spinel structure and the associated defects. DC magnetization measurements indicated the existence of significant interparticle interactions among nanoparticles (superspins). Additional confirmation for the presence of interparticle interactions was found from the fit of the Tf(H) dependence to the AT line, from which a value of the anisotropy constant of K-eff = 5.6 x 10(5) erg cm(-3) was deduced. Further evidence for strong interparticle interactions was found from AC susceptibility measurements, where the frequency dependence of the freezing temperature T-f(f) was satisfactory described by both Vogel-Fulcher and dynamic scaling theory, both applicable for interacting systems. The parameters obtained from these fits suggest collective freezing of magnetic moments at T-f.

AB - Investigation of complex, nonequilibrium dynamics of super spin glass nanoparticle La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 sample was conducted through the comprehensive set of magnetization relaxation measurements. It comprised measurements of thermoremanent and zero-field cooled magnetization time decay under various temperature and field conditions, as well as study of the ageing effect for different waiting times. A variety of theoretical models dealing with nonequilibrium dynamics in spin glasses was successfully implemented in the description of experimentally observed relaxation phenomena. Collective behaviour observed at low temperatures and intermediate magnetic fields was found to be the consequence of the random orientation of easy axes and significant dipolar interactions between nanoparticle moments. AB - The electron-doped magnetic nanoparticles of Ca1-xYxMnO3 (x = 0, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, 0.20, and 0.30) manganite with an average particle size of 50 nm are analyzed and discussed in relation to their bulk counterparts. Nanoparticle samples show dominant anti-ferromagnetic ordering with a significant increase of coercivity, with the maximum value of 0.9 T for x = 0. Particle size reduction in Ca1-xYxMnO3 retains the bulk-like magnetic behavior of samples having up to 15% of Y3+, with the small ferromagnetic contribution from disordered surface spins. Suppression of charge ordering state and enhancement of saturation magnetization were found in samples with higher Y3+ concentration (x = 0.2, 0.3), indicating high ferromagnetic contribution in these samples.

AB - In order to obtain nanocrystalline material which can be used in MLCC production, the investigations of the influence of BaTiO3 powder tribophysical activation (TPA) on its structural changes, dielectric and ferroelectric properties have been performed. Microstructure development and crystal structure have been studied by mercury porosimetry method, SEM, EDS and X-ray powder diffraction analyses. The modifications of dielectric and ferroelectric properties of sintered samples have been examined and correlated with observed structural changes induced by TPA of starting powders. It has been found that dielectric and ferroelectric properties of tribophysically activated BaTiO3 could be tuned by controlling the grain size and lattice strain of activated nanostructured material.

AB - Room temperature ferromagnetic properties of Zn-Mn-O show evident dependence on manganese concentration and preparation conditions. We systematically studied series of samples with manganese concentration ranging from 0 to 10 at.%, prepared in air at thermal treatment temperatures ranging from 400 to 900 degrees tau C. The samples were investigated by X-ray diffraction, TEM, magnetization measurements and XPS spectroscopy. XPS analyses of surface composition, chemical bonding and XPS depth profiling were successfully employed on powder revealing the chemical composition at the surface of the grains and underneath. The study emphasizes important role of the grain surface in observed room temperature ferromagnetism. It seems that the ferromagnetic phase is correlated with oxygen build up at the surface.

AB - Single-phase perovskite compound La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 was synthesised by a high-energy ball milling in a single step processing. Structure and morphology characterizations revealed nanoparticle nature of this mixed valent manganite with the average particle diameter of 9 nm. Comprehensive set of magnetic measurements showed that the system can be described as an ensemble of interacting magnetic nanoparticles where each particle possesses high magnetic moment, i.e., superspin. Furthermore, magnetic behavior showed contributions from both superspin-glass (SSG) and superparamagnetic (SP) states, and the prevailing properties depended on the experimental conditions. It was established that SSG state dominated in low magnetic fields up to 500 Oe while in higher applied fields suppression of collective behavior occurred and individual characteristics of nanoparticles prevailed. It was also concluded that the applied method of synthesis produced system with high magnetic anisotropy as well as with the large nanoparticle shell whose thickness amounts 30% of a particle diameter.

AB - Spin dynamics in mechanochemically obtained nanoparticle manganite La0.70Ca0.30MnO3 was investigated in this study by means of a series of AC and DC magnetic measurements. AC susceptibility indicates the presence of sizeable interparticle interactions, yielding collective magnetic behavior. The related properties were probed by experiments in weak DC field: memory effects were analyzed in both field-cooled (FC) and zero field-cooled (ZFC) regimes, while, after ZFC aging, magnetic relaxation was recorded. The system appears to be sensitive to magnetothermal history, in analogy with spin-glass-like compounds. The analysis of the data indicates the occurrence of slow dynamics in an ensemble of strongly interacting super spins.

AB - In this article, in order to obtain tetragonal nanocrystalline BaTiO3, structural investigations of mechanically activated BaTiO3 powder have been performed. A mercury porosimetry analysis and scanning electron microscopy method have been applied for determination of the specific pore volume, porosity and microstructure morphology of the samples. The lattice vibration spectra of nonactivated and activated powders, their phase composition, lattice microstrains and the mean size of coherently diffracting domains were examined by Raman spectroscopy and the X-ray powder diffraction method. The average crystal structure of obtained nanocrystalline powders, estimated from X-ray diffraction data, gave evidence of retained, but slightly sustained tetragonality of powders, even for particles as small as similar to 30 nm. Raman spectroscopy also gave clear evidence for local tetragonal symmetries, in particular through the presence of a band at similar to 307 cm(-1). (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. AB - Here we report results of systematic investigation of heterogeneity and disorder in Ti1-xFeyO2-d nanorod rutile-based flowerlike aggregates. It was found that Ti1-xFeyO2-d aggregates are composed of two crystalline phases: rutile as a dominant and anatase as a minor phase. Flowerlike aggregates were found to grow from an isometric core ca. 5-10 nm in diameter that was built from anatase and rutile nanorods ca. 5 x 100 nm that were grown on the anatase surface having base plane (001) intergrowth with an anatase plane. The direction of rutile nanorods growth, i.e., direction of the nanorod elongation, was [001]. Highly nonisometric rutile crystals produce anisotropic X-ray powder diffraction line broadening and doubling of vibrational bands in Raman spectra. Both these techniques confirmed nonisometric character of rutile crystals and gave a quantitative measure of crystal shape anisotropy in excellent agreement with high-resolution transmission electron microscopy measurements. In addition, from the atomic pair distribution function and Raman spectral analyses the level of vacancy concentration was determined in rutile and anatase phases of investigated samples.
