AB - The creation of novel biocompatible Ti-based thin films with a Zr or Cu sub-layer modified by ultrafast laser processing is studied. To prepare bioactive surfaces, ultrafast laser processing is focused on the formation of laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) with the production of oxide phases at the surfaces. Two differently designed multilayer thin films Ti/Cu/Ti and Ti/Zr/Ti were deposited on the silicon using the ion sputtering method. The Ti thin film contains Cu or Zr sub-layer (thickness of 10 nm) at the 10 nm below the surface. The composition and surface morphology variations for these systems, deposited and laser-processed under the same experimental conditions, were caused only by different thermo-physical properties of the sub-layer (Cu or Zr). The surface morphology in the form of LIPSS, led to improved cell adhesion and stable cells/thin films interface compared to as-deposited samples. Field-emission scanning electron microscopy and MTT analysis revealed that laser processing of both systems increased cell adhesion, proliferation, and metabolical activity of L929 mouse fibroblast cells compared to non-modified flat surfaces. Overall, the biocompatibility of Zrcontaining thin films is better than Ti/Cu/Ti system. Further, laser processing and formation of LIPSS makes Ti/Zr/Ti thin films excellent candidate for biomedical

AB - Arranged patterns obtained via ultrafast laser processing on the surface of Ti/Cu/Ti/Si and Ti/Zr/Ti/Si thin-film systems are reported. Two differently designed multilayer thin films Ti/Cu/Ti/Si and Ti/Zr/Ti/Si were deposited on silicon using the ion sputtering method. The bioactive surfaces of these systems involve the formation of laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) in each of the laser-written lines of mesh patterns on 5 × 5 mm areas. The formation of nano- and micro-patterns with an ultra-thin oxide film on the surfaces was used to observe the effects of morphology and proliferation of the MRC-5 cell culture line. To determine whether Ti-based thin films have a toxic effect on living cells, an MTT assay was performed. The relative cytotoxic effect, as a percentage of surviving cells, showed that there was no difference in cell number between the Ti-based thin films and the control cells. There was also no difference in the viability of the MRC-5 cells, except for the Ti/Cu/Ti/Si system, where there was a slight 10% decrease in cell viability. © 2023 by the authors.

AB - The experimental study of the static and dynamic femtosecond laser ablation of the multilayer 15x(Ti/Zr)/Si system is reported. The layer-by-layer selective laser ablation mechanism was studied by analysis of the surface morphology and elemental composition in static single pulse irradiation in a range of pulse energy from 10 to 17 $$\upmu $$J. The selective ablations, as number of concentric circles in modified spots are increased with the pulse energy. The boundary between the circles was shown a change in the depth, comparable to the thickness of the individual layers. Changes in the elemental composition at the edges are associated with the removal of the layer by layer. The dynamic multipulse irradiation was observed via the production of lines with laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) at different laser parameters (scan velocities and laser polarization). The spatial periodicity of the formed LIPSS depends on changes in the effective number of pulses and laser polarization, as well as the nature of the material. For better interpretation of the experimental results, simulations have been conducted to explore the thermal response of the multiple layered structure 15x(Ti/Zr) after static single pulse irradiation.

AB - Ultrafast laser processing with the formation of periodic surface nanostructures on the 15×(Ti/Zr)/Si multilayers is studied in order to the improve cell response. A novel nanocomposite structure in the form of 15x(Ti/Zr)/Si multilayer thin films, with satisfying mechanical properties and moderate biocompatibility, was deposited by ion sputtering on an Si substrate. The multilayer 15×(Ti/Zr)/Si thin films were modified by femtosecond laser pulses in air to induce the following modifications: (i) mixing of components inside of the multilayer structures, (ii) the formation of an ultrathin oxide layer at the surfaces, and (iii) surface nano-texturing with the creation of laser-induced periodic surface structure (LIPSS). The focus of this study was an examination of the novel Ti/Zr multilayer thin films in order to create a surface texture with suitable composition and structure for cell integration. Using the SEM and confocal microscopies of the laser-modified Ti/Zr surfaces with seeded cell culture (NIH 3T3 fibroblasts), it was found that cell adhesion and growth depend on the surface composition and morphological patterns. These results indicated a good proliferation of cells after two and four days with some tendency of the cell orientation along the LIPSSs. © 2020 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland.

AB - The influence of material characteristics—i.e., type or surface texture—to wetting properties is nowadays increased by the implementation of ultrafast lasers for nanostructuring. In this account, we exposed multilayer thin metal film samples of different materials to a femtosecond laser beam at a 1030 nm wavelength. The interaction generated high-quality laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) of spatial periods between 740 and 790 nm and with maximal average corrugation height below 100 nm. The contact angle (CA) values of the water droplets on the surface were estimated and the values between unmodified and modified samples were compared. Even though the laser interaction changed both the surface morphology and the chemical composition, the wetting properties were predominantly influenced by the small change in morphology causing the increase in the contact angle of ~80%, which could not be explained classically. The influence of both surface corrugation and chemical composition to the wetting properties has been thoroughly investigated, discussed and explained. The presented results clearly confirm that femtosecond patterning can be used to mold wetting properties.

AB - The formation of an ordered surface texture with micro and nanometer features on Ti/Zr multilayers is studied for better understanding and improvement of cell integration. Nanocomposite in form 30×(Ti/Zr)/Si thin films was deposited by ion sputtering on Si substrate for biocompatibility investigation. Surface texturing by femtosecond laser processing made it possible to form the laser-induced periodic surface structure (LIPSS) in each laser-written line. At fluence slightly above the ablation threshold, beside the formation of low spatial frequency-LIPSS (LSFL) oriented perpendicular to the direction of the laser polarization, the laser-induced surface oxidation was achieved on the irradiated area. Intermixing between the Ti and Zr layers with the formation of alloy in the sub-surface region was attained during the laser processing. The surface of the Ti/Zr multilayer system with changed composition and topography was used to observe the effect of topography on the survival, adhesion and proliferation of the murine mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). Confocal and SEM microscopy images showed that cell adhesion and their growth improve on these modified surfaces, with tendency of the cell orientation along of LIPSS in laser-written lines. © 2019 by the authors.

© 2019 by the authors.",

AB - The interaction of ultra-short laser pulses with Titanium/Aluminium (Ti/Al) nano-layered thin film was investigated. The sample composed of alternating Ti and Al layers of a few nanometres thick was deposited by ion-sputtering. A single pulse irradiation experiment was conducted in an ambient air environment using focused and linearly polarized femtosecond laser pulses for the investigation of the ablation effects. The laser induced morphological changes and the composition were characterized using several microscopy techniques and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The following results were obtained: (i) at low values of pulse energy/fluence, ablation of the upper Ti layer only was observed; (ii) at higher laser fluence, a two-step ablation of Ti and Al layers takes place, followed by partial removal of the nano-layered film. The experimental observations were supported by a theoretical model accounting for the thermal response of the multiple layered structure upon irradiation with ultra-short laser pulses. AB - In this work we reported low and high repetition frequency femtosecond laser- induced modifications of tungsten-based thin film. The tungsten-titanium (WTi) thin film, thickness of 190 nm, was deposited by sputtering on single crystal Si (100) wafer. Irradiations were performed in air by linearly polarized and focused femtosecond laser beams with following parameters: (1) pulse duration 160 fs, wavelength 800 nm, laser repetition frequency (LRF) 75 MHz - high LRF, and (2) duration 40 fs, wavelength 800 nm, LRF of 1 kHz - low LRF. The results of femtosecond lasers processing of the WTi thin film revealed laser induced periodical surface structures (LIPSS) in the case of low LRF regime. LIPSSs were formed with different periodicity and different orientation to the laser polarization at the surface: micro-scale LIPSSs with orientation perpendicular to the laser polarization and nano-scale LIPSSs parallel and perpendicular to the laser polarization. After processing of the WTi/Si system in high LRF regime ablation and nanoparticles formation were registered.

AB - The conditions of ultra-thin oxide films synthesized as the Al/Fe multilayer structures after the surface treatment with femtosecond laser radiation were studied. Thin films composed of three (Al/Fe) bilayers were deposited by DC ion sputtering on (100) Si wafers to the total thickness of 410 nm. Laser irradiations were performed by 40-fs pulses of a Ti:Sapphire laser operating at 800 nm, at fluences slightly higher than the ablation threshold. The samples were characterized by Auger electron spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. Progressed intermixing of components was achieved for the irradiation with fluence of 0.43 J cm(-2), when intermetallic phase was formed and all components were almost uniformly distributed through the entire multilayer structure. Exception is the subsurface region, to the thickness of 20 nm, where the distribution of constructive components and their oxide is changing with the distance from the surface, and this distribution depends on the applied laser fluences. An ultra-thin oxide layer was formed at the surface, with the specific combination of the oxide phases, Al2O3 and Fe2O3, depending on the applied fluences. Laser-induced modification was accompanied with the ablation of the material and the creation of parallel periodic structures. These effects of laser-induced morphological features are increased with increasing laser fluences, caused by the pronounced mobility of the materials. The special morphology of the laser-assisted synthesis of mixture of Al2O3 and Fe2O3 in the form of an ultra-thin oxide layer can improve their characteristics for functional applications, as catalysts and sensors.

AB - Laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSSs) and chemical composition changes of Ti-based nanolayered thin films (Al/Ti, Ni/Ti) after femtosecond (fs) laser pulses action were studied. Irradiation is performed using linearly polarized Ti:Sapphire fs laser pulses of 40 fs pulse duration and 800 nm wavelength. The low spatial frequency LIPSS (LSFL), oriented perpendicular to the laser polarization with periods slightly lower than the irradiation wavelength, was typically formed at elevated laser fluences. On the contrary, high spatial frequency LIPSS (HSFL) with uniform period of 155 nm, parallel to the laser light polarization, appeared at low laser fluences, as well as in the wings of the Gaussian laser beam distribution for higher used fluence. LSFL formation was associated with the material ablation process and accompanied by the intense formation of nanoparticles, especially in the Ni/Ti system. The composition changes at the surface of both multilayer systems in the LSFL area indicated the intermixing between layers and the substrate. Concentration and distribution of all constitutive elements in the irradiated area with formed HSFLs were almost unchanged. (C) 2013 AIP Publishing LLC.
