AB - Electrodeposition of copper from deep eutectic solvents (DES) based on a mixture of choline chloride and ethylene glycol containing CuCl2·2H2O at 50 °C and 80 °C was studied. Electrochemical reduction/oxidation of Cu(II)/Cu(0) on glassy carbon (GC) and palladium (Pd) electrodes was investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and square wave voltammetry (SWV) emphasizing that this process takes place through two steps, Cu(II) ↔ Cu(I) and Cu(I) ↔ Cu(0). The CV results showed that in chloride-rich DES electrolytes, the increased presence of chloro ligands raises the overpotential required for Cu electrodeposition. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) results indicate simultaneous electrodeposition of Cu and electrosorption of large cations on electrodeposited Cu on both GC and Pd substrates. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results showed that Cu grains of approximately 1 μm were obtained by electrodeposition of Cu on both Pd and GC, whereby better coverage by electrodeposited Cu was obtained on Pd than on GC. Cu electrodeposited on Pd was relatively uniform and smooth, but porous, while Cu electrodeposited on GC was dispersed in small agglomerates. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) of Cu electrodeposited on Pd detected the dominant presence of Cu with the possibility of the formation of CuPd alloy. The presence of CuPd alloy face-centred cubic structures is confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) along with metallic Cu.

AB - The goal of this research was to obtain a chemically complex multicomponent
oxide with the A2B2O7 pyrochlore structure with nominal composition
(La1/7Sm1/7Nd1/7Pr1/7Y1/7Gd1/7Yb1/7)2(Sn1/3Hf1/3Zr1/3)2O7 that contains 10 different
cations in equiatomic amounts which was obtained by reacting metal nitrates (site
A) and metal chlorides (site B) with glycine during the combustion reaction. The
powder synthesized initially was found to be amorphous based on XRD analysis. To
convert the powder into a crystalline pyrochlore structure, the powder underwent
post-calcination at various temperatures ranging from 600–1500 °C. It was
discovered that the desired monophase pyrochlore structure (A2B2O7) was obtained
after calcination at 900 °C. To create a high-density ceramic pellet, the powder
calcined at 900 °C was subjected to pressureless sintering at 1650 °C for four hours
in the presence of air. The resulting pellet had a density of 97% of the theoretical
density and was free from any additives. This process likely caused the powder
particles to fuse together, creating a solid, dense pellet.

AB - The effect of mechanical milling on the thermal behavior of pyrophyllite ore from a deposit in Parsovići, Bosnia and Herzegovina, was characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and Particle size distribution. The thermal behavior of the material was followed by thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis and correlated to its microstructural properties. The Williamson-Hall model was used to calculate the crystallite size and microstrain. Mechanochemical treatment of pyrophyllite ore produced a substantial structural modification, mainly along the c axis, resulting in disorder and partial degradation of the crystal structure of the ore. The particle size diminution, induced defects, and microstrain in the crystal lattice cause decrease in the peak intensity until the final disappearance. As confirmed by scanning electron microscopy and particle-size-distribution analysis, the surface area and the agglomeration is more pronounced as grinding time increases. Dehydroxylation of the minerals in the unmilled ore was realized at 716oC confirm by FTIR analysis. The endothermic peak that corresponds to dehydroxylation is shifted toward lower temperatures and becomes broad giving rise to the formation of amorphous SiO2 as milling time increases.

AB - Silver alloys are generally used in the different fields of industry, including chemical processing, construction, heat exchangers, etc. Although Ag-Cu-Zn-Cd type of alloys, were widely exploited in the second half of the 20th century for their excellent properties, its use is forbidden in the EU due to the high toxicity of cadmium vapors. Ag-Cu-In type of alloy is a good alternative to Ag-Cu-Zn-Cd alloys, with great properties and can be used in various fields of industry. Most common methods for characterization of surface corrosion films of Ag-Cu alloys are: X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersion spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), Raman spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Our current study focuses on the application of laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry (LDI MS) for determination of corrosion products of Ag-Cu alloy. The aim of this study was to confirm LDI MS as a fast, accurate and reliable method for determination of corrosion products on the surface of Ag-Cu-In alloy.

AB - A cost-effective and simple hydrometallurgy procedure for recycling the diamond core drilling crowns by nitric acid leaching, followed by the sodium hydroxide leaching, has been developed. The effect of temperature, nitric acid/sodium hydroxide concentration, leaching time and stirring rate were studied. For the acid leaching process the optimal values for parameters were 60 °C, 1.0 M HNO3, 2.5 h, and 800 rpm. It has been noted that the key factors in the alkaline leaching process were temperature and NaOH concentration. For the alkaline leaching, the optimal parameters were 100 °C, 40% concentration of NaOH solution, and leaching time of 4 h. Identification and characterisation of products in all technological processes were performed by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), and laser desorption ionisation mass spectrometry (LDI-MS). The analysis of solutions in all phases was performed by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES). The use of LDI-MS as a new approach to identify the products after phases in the recycling process was an important part of the study, and the results were consistent with the XRD analysis. The total tungsten recovery was over 95.6%, with a high purity of the obtained tungsten trioxide.

abstract = "A cost-effective and simple hydrometallurgy procedure for recycling the diamond core drilling crowns by nitric acid leaching, followed by the sodium hydroxide leaching, has been developed. The total tungsten recovery was over 95.6%, with a high purity of the obtained tungsten trioxide.",

AB - Corrosion products formed on the surface of two silver brazing alloys after the potentiostatic polarization in 3.5% sodium chloride solution were characterized by the standard methods such as, the X-ray diffraction, micro-Raman spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive spectroscopy. This paper presents the results of a laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (LDI MS) analysis as a new approach to the characterization of corrosion products. The potential of the anodic polarization was 0.5 V versus saturated calomel electrode, and the process duration was 300 s. The corrosion layers on both investigated alloys were similar in composition with cuprous chloride and silver chloride as the main components and had strong indications of cuprous oxide formation. The major difference between these two layers was the existence of zinc hydroxychloride as the corrosion product of Ag-Cu-Zn alloy. Palladium compounds were not found in the case of Ag-Cu-Pd alloy. The results of different methods have shown a good consistency. Complementarity between the used methods was useful in the interpretation of the results for each used method. This study has demonstrated that LDI MS can be used as an efficient additional method together with the traditional ones.

AB - In this work, a simple way for study the possibility of formation a vapor cluster species of tetrachloroauric acid (HAuCl4), using the laser ablation in the absence of a buffer or reactive atmosphere, and without a postablation supersonic expansion on a commercial matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometer, is reported. Tetrachloroauric acid is known as precursor for the synthesis of gold nanostructures and the complex salts; therefore it is an important task to discover and quantify the species arising from HAuCl4, in order to understand their role in the gold assisted reactions. Mass spectrum of HAuCl4in a reflector negative-ion mode contains the hydrated mono- and dinuclear gold clusters in the m/z range 286–436, and gold chloride clusters in the m/z range 447–795. In the first part of spectrum, m/z range 286–436, the hydrated gold cluster species of type Aun−(H2O)m(n = 1–2; m = 1, 2, 5, 7, 8) and [Aun(OH)k]−(H2O)m(n = 1–2; k = 1–2; m = 1, 4–8) were found. Besides that, there are gold chloride clusters with general formula [AuHr(HCl)2]−(H2O)m(m = 1–5; 8–9; r = 0–2) in this part of spectrum. In the second part of spectrum, the m/z range 447–795, only gold chloride clusters were obtained. Their general formulae can be written as [AuClt(HCl)v]−(H2O)m(t = 1–4; v = 5–8; m = 2–4, 6–8) and [Aun(HCl)v]−(H2O)m(n = 1–2, v = 4–5, m = 1–2, 5, 7). The analysis of concentration effects on the LDI mass spectra of gold clusters reveals that the relative intensities of signals for the mono- and dinuclear Au clusters increase with decreasing the concentration of water HAuCl4solutions.

AB - Microstructure and phase transitions of selected brazing alloys from the Ag-Cu-Zn ternary system were investigated. Four ternary alloys with silver content in the compositional range from 25 to 60 wt.% were studied using x-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy coupled with the energy-dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). Phase transitions of the investigated alloys were measured using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Experimentally obtained results were compared with the results of a thermodynamic calculation of the phase equilibria according to the CALPHAD method. The experiments confirmed the optimized thermodynamic parameters for the calculations from the thermodynamic assessment in literature. Phase compositions, liquidus and solidus temperatures were confirmed by the EDS and DTA methods. Additionally, the calculated solidification paths and predicted phase transformations were in agreement with the SEM images.

AB - This work is the first to demonstrate the possibilities of direct analysis of the corrosion film formed on Ag43Cu37Zn20 alloy using laser desorption/ionization (LDI) on a commercial matrix-assisted LDI time of flight mass spectrometry (MS) instrument. In the LDI mass spectra measured from the water solution of the corrosion film, the ion species Zn+, Zn(H2O)(+), AgH+, Cu2H+, Cu2O(OH)+, Cu3O(OH)(+) (high intensity), and Cu(OH)(H2O)(+), ZnCl(OH)(H2O)(+), AgCl+, CuCl+ (low intensity) were identified. The LDI mass spectra of the propan-2-ol solution of the corrosion film contains the ions Zn5Cl(OH)(3)(H2O)(11)(+), Zn5Cl2 (OH)(8) (H2O)(6)(+), and Zn5Cl2 (OH)(H2O)(14)(+). Mass spectra were observed at laser energies in the range of 1340-1860 arbitrary units in positive ion mode. Previously, Raman spectra and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis of the same anodic film have shown similar results as LDI MS -that the anodic film contains the mixture of Ag, Cu2O, CuCl, Zn5Cl2(OH)(8) center dot H2O, and beta-Zn(OH) Cl. LDI MS could be a complementary method for XRD and Raman, as demonstrated in this investigation. The LDI MS method greatly reduces the analysis time and amount of the sample compared to traditional methods. For this reason, the LDI MS method can be a useful tool for the fast qualitative screening of corrosion films.
