AB  - The procedure of radioactive standards preparation by spiking selected matrices with a certified mixture of radionuclides and its validation is presented in this paper. The uncertainty budget of standard total activity was elaborated in details. The experimentally obtained efficiency curves, as well as comparison with the curves obtained by the efficiency transfer, are presented. Additionally, in order to confirm claimed homogeneity of prepared standard bulk materials, the efficiency versus density dependence for the individual gamma ray energies was checked for the same geometries and the results are presented. The results of the participation in recent IAEA PT scheme are discussed also. © 2021 Elsevier Ltd

AB  - Simultaneous thermal analysis (TG–DTA) of low-rank coals from different annual periods (2015 and 2018) which originate from Kolubara and Nikola Tesla A (TENT A) coal-fired power plants was studied to identify their combustion characteristics and self-ignition risks. In order to investigate kinetics of thermo-oxidative degradation, model-free models including the Friedman and Kissinger–Akahira–Sunose methods were applied. In accordance with obtained kinetic results, numerical optimization of combustion process was implemented. Homogeneous and heterogeneous types of ignition were identified for the tested coals, and factors that affect their occurrence are the used heating rate and volatile matter content. From thermal susceptibility graph, it was found that the tested coals expand in a wide range of self-ignition risk, depending on their coal rank. The youngest coal (TENT A (2018)) has the largest propensity to self-ignite among high-ranking coals. It was found that less tendency of 2018 coals to show true isokinetic temperature in comparison with 2015 coals is a consequence of intraparticle diffusion limitations, and change of char properties, at higher conversion values. Gamma spectrometry analysis of coals showed that higher concentration of 40K radionuclide (which is in mineral composition) may contribute through its deposition on available sites, decreasing surface area for reaction with oxidizing species. © 2020, Akadémiai Kiadó, Budapest, Hungary.

Quantification of radioisotopic pollution of soil from coal fired power plant surrounding

AB  - This paper is focused on determination of activity concentration of gamma emitters in surface layer of soil, in surrounding of the coal-fired power plant complex. Also, the impact of coal-fired power plant emissions on certain of physical and chemical properties of the soil was studied. The results of this study indicated that the operation of the power plant has no significant negative impact on the environment in terms of the content of radionuclides. The effect of the coal-fired power plant emissions on soil is a function of the pollutant gradient existing in the area. The increased soil acidity can adversely affect the microbiological and pedogenetic processes in soil which cause cation-anion imbalance and microbe population reduction to affect soil fertility. © 2020, Editura Academiei Romane. AB  - Taking into account the importance of distribution and transfer of radionuclides in the soil–plant system, especially in agricultural fields, the aim of this research was assessment of radioactivity contribution and transfer characteristics of natural radionuclides in agroecosystem. The measurement of the natural radioactivity distribution was conducted in organic and sustainable farming management systems. Statistical evaluation of the physical and chemical properties of soils subjected to different farming systems, revealed the existence of differences in some parameters. Balanced distribution of natural radionuclides in soil-crop system was observed. Radionuclide 40K was the most accessible to the investigated crops via uptake from the soil, then 232Th and 226Ra. The obtained results are useful for understanding the behavior of the radionuclides and provide an insight into the cumulative deposition of radioactivity in the agroecosystem.

AB  - U ovom radu dat je pregled radova prezentovanih u oblasti Radioekologije i izlaganja stanovništva na skupovima Društva za zaštitu od zračenja, počev od I jugoslovenskog simpozijuma  o  radiološkoj  zaštiti  u  Portoroţu  1963.  godine  i  zaključno  sa  XXIX Simpozijumom  Društva  za  zaštitu  od  zračenja  Srbije  i  Crne  Gore  odrţanom  na Srebrnom  jezeru  2017.  godine.  U  radu  je  dat  pregled  aktuelnih  tema,  osvrt  na  razvoj metoda  i  tehnika  merenja,  kao  i  opšti  trendovi  razvoja  i  diferenciranja  oblasti radioekologije uslovljenih dogaĎanjima u obuhvaćenom vremenskom periodu.
AB  - This paper gives an overview of the papers in the field of radioecology and population exposure   to   ionizing   radiation   presented   at   the Radiation   Protection   Association symposia  starting  with  the  1stYugoslav  Radiation  Protection  Association  symposium held in Portoroţ in 1963 and concluding with the 29thsymposium  of  the Society  for Radiation  Protection  of  Serbia  and  Montenegro held  at  Srebrno  jezero  in  2017.  An overview of current topics, methods andmeasurement techniques development review, as  well  as  general  trends  in  the  development  and  differentiation  of  the  radioecology field due to different events in the covered period are presented.

AB  - Након измерене високе концентрације радона у три просторије у једној кући  почетком 2018. године, настављено је испитивање концентрације у свим годишњим добима, а број просторија је повећан на пет. Као што је очекивано, концентрација радона је у току летњих месеци била много мања него у зимском периоду, првенствено због сталног проветравања. У осталим годишњим добима уочена је велико повећање коцентрације радона са смањењем спољашње температуре. Такође је уочено смањење концентрације радона у свим просто-ријама наредне зиме, за приближно исти хладни период, када је уместо угља коришћен дрвени пелет.
AB  - The high radon concentrations were measured in three rooms in one house at the beginning of 2018. After that, radon testing was continued during all seasons and the number of rooms was increased to five. As expected, the concentration of radon during the summer was much lower than in the winter period, primarily due to constant natural ventilation. In other seasons, a large increase in radon concentration with a decrease in the  outside  temperature  was  observed.  There  was  also  a  decrease  in  radon concentrations in all rooms in the following winter, in approximately the same cold period, when wood pellets were used instead of coal.

abstract = "Након измерене високе концентрације радона у три просторије у једној кући  почетком 2018. године, настављено је испитивање концентрације у свим годишњим добима, а број просторија је повећан на пет. Као што је очекивано, концентрација радона је у току летњих месеци била много мања него у зимском периоду, првенствено због сталног проветравања. У осталим годишњим добима уочена је велико повећање коцентрације радона са смањењем спољашње температуре. Такође је уочено смањење концентрације радона у свим просто-ријама наредне зиме, за приближно исти хладни период, када је уместо угља коришћен дрвени пелет., The high radon concentrations were measured in three rooms in one house at the beginning of 2018. After that, radon testing was continued during all seasons and the number of rooms was increased to five. As expected, the concentration of radon during the summer was much lower than in the winter period, primarily due to constant natural ventilation. In other seasons, a large increase in radon concentration with a decrease in the  outside  temperature  was  observed.  There  was  also  a  decrease  in  radon concentrations in all rooms in the following winter, in approximately the same cold period, when wood pellets were used instead of coal.",

Liquid scintillation counter calibration approach for 90Sr detection and testing performance of TK100 resin

AB  - 90Sr detection efficiency determination was applied for liquid scintillation counting (LSC) by computing a model for the relation between detection efficiency and the time passed since radiochemical separation. This allowed more flexibility in analysis times after separation as the model accounts for 90Y in-growth. Establishment of secular equilibrium was therefore not required for LSC measurements. In addition, this approach increases counting efficiency compared to classical ones as both 90Sr and 90Y spectrums are used. This in turn has a positive impact on minimum detectable activity. The method was validated using proficiency test samples for both Čerenkov radiation measurement and scintillation cocktail measurement. Commonly used extraction material Sr-resin was compared to alternative, TK100 resin. Inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry measurements for recovery determination showed limitations for TK100 usage due to incomplete Sr retention on the resin. Limitations were further confirmed by LSC activity measurements. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd

AB  - Merna nesigurnost rezultata merenja predstavlja pokazatelj kvaliteta izvršenog merenja. U laboratorijama za ispitivanje najčešće se prikazuje kombinovana merna nesigurnost na nivou poverenja 95% (k=2). U slučaju kada laboratorijskoj analizi prethodi postupak uzorkovanja, budžet nesigurnosti rezultata merenjatreba (prema ISO17025:2017), da obuhvata i nesigurnost koja potiče usled postupka uzorkovanja. U ovom radu je opisan postupak procene nesigurnosti rezultata merenja usled uzorkovanja.
AB  - The uncertainty of the measurement results is an indicator of the quality of the performed measurement. In the testing laboratories, the combined measurement uncertainty is usually given at the level of confidence of 95% (k = 2). If the laboratory analysis is preceded by a sampling procedure, the uncertainty budget of the measurement results should (according to ISO17025: 2017) include the uncertainty arising from the sampling procedure. This paper describes the procedure for estimating the uncertainty of the results of measurement due to sampling.

AB  - Godine 2018. Laboratorija za zaštitu od zračenja i zaštitu životne sredine je učestvovala u interkomparaciji "REM 2018 radon-in-water proficiency test". Zadatak je bio izmeriti koncentraciju radona u dostavljenom uzorku vode. Ovaj uzorak je meren gama spektrometrijski na HPGe detektoru. Najpre je merenje izvršeno na uzorku u nativnom obliku, bez otvaranja boce u kojoj je dostavljen. Zatim je sadržaj boce prebačen u Marineli geometriju i ponovo izmerenna istomdetektoru.Pri proračunu aktivnosti korišćen je transfer efikasnosti programom EFFTRANi kalibracija QA/QC uzorkom vode,dostavljenim  u  okviru  interkomparacije  IAEA-TEL-2018-03.Poređenjem dobijenih rezultata i referentnevrednosti dateu preliminarnom izveštaju organizatora interkomparacije, utvrđeno je da postoji značajna zavisnost rezultata odpristupa merenju i proračunu aktivnosti. U ovom radu su predstavljeni rezultati oba pristupa i analiza i komentar tačnosti i preciznosti rezultata.
AB  - In 2018, Laboratory for Environment and Radiation Protection took part in the proficiency test "REM 2018 radon-in-water proficiency test". The task of this proficiency test was to determine the concentration of radon in the water sample. This sample  was  measured  by  gamma  spectrometry  on  HPGe  detector.  Firstly,  the measurement was performed on the native sample, without opening the bottle in which the sample was delivered. After that, the sample was placed into Marinelli beaker and measured again on the same detector. To calculate the activity concentration of radon in the  sample,  the  calibration  was  performed  using QA/QC  sample  from  the IAEA-TEL-2018-03 proficiency test andthe efficiency transfer was performed using EFFTRAN software. Comparison of the obtained results with the reference value, provided in the preliminary report of the proficiency test, showed that there is a significant influence of the measurement geometry and the calculation approach. In thispaper, the results of both approaches to the measurement and calculation will be presented and the trueness and precision of the results will be analyzed and commented.

AB  - U radu su prikazane mogućnosti za ispitivanje kontaminacije ţivotne sredine, do koje je došlo  1999.  godine  tokom  dejstava  NATO  avijacije  osiromašenim  uranijumom  na nekoliko lokaliteta u juţnoj Srbiji. S obzirom na proteklo vreme, imajući u vidu da je izvršena  sanacija  kontaminiranih  područja  i  da  rezultati  monitoringa  ne  pokazuju značajna odstupanja od prirodnih varijacija, za sva dalja istraţivanja bi bilo potrebno razmotriti  unapredjivanje  i  uvodjenje  osetljivijih  metoda  i  tehnika  za  odredjivanje niskih  koncentracija  uranijuma i  njegovih  izotopa u  sloţenim  matriksimaiz  ţivotne sredine i biološkim materijalima. Dosadašnja istraţivanja su obuhvatila radiohemijsku karakterizaciju projektila, ispitivanjesadrţaja, distribucije i migracijeOU kroz različite segmente ţivotnesredine, mobilnost i veze sa prirodnim supstratima u zemljištu. Za analizu su korišćene radiohemijske analitičkeprocedure i tehnike kao što su separacija primenom jonskehromatografije,   primena   trasera,   elektrodepozicija,višestepene sekvencijalne ekstrakcije, fluorimetrijska, alfa spektrometrijska i gamaspektrometrijska merenja.  Dalja  ispitivanja  bi se mogla vršiti u pravcu specijacije OU, analize njegove kinetike i termodinamike u fizičko-hemijskim procesima u ţivotnoj sredini uz primenu komplementarnih analitičkih procedura i tehnika visoke osetljivosti i tehnika pogodnih za  mikroanalizu  čestica  ikarakterizaciju  materijala,  kao  što su HR ICP-MS, LSC, SIMS, μ-XANES itd.
AB  - The  capabilities  of  study  on  environmental  contamination  caused  1999  by  NATO  air strikes  using  depleted  uranium  at  several  locations  in  southern  Serbia.  Having  in  mind passed time, implemented clean up activities in contaminated areas and no indication of significant  deviations  from  natural  levels  within  the  monitoring  assessment,  for  any further  studies  on  low  level  uranium  and  its  isotopes  concentrations  in  complex environmental  and  biological  samples,  the  advanced  and  more  sensitive  methods  and techniques   should   be   involved.   Up   to   now,   the   studies   on   the   radiochemical characterization of the projectile, depelted uranium contents, distribution and migration through the environmental departments and on ingress into natural substrates, have been conducted  using  the  radiochemical  analytical  procedures  and  techniques  like  ion chromatography   separations,   application   of   tracers,   electrodeposition,   multi-step sequential   extractions,   fluorometric,   alpha   spectrometric   and   gama   spectrometric measurements. The topic of further studies may be depleted uranium speciation, kinetic and   thermodynamic   analysis   of   its   behaviour   in   environmental   physicochemical processes  so  that  complementary  highly  sensitive  analytical  procedures  and  techniques as  well  as  techniques  suitable  for  particles  microanalysis  and  materials  chracterization, like HR ICP-MS, LSC, SIMS,μ-XANES, etc, should be considered.

Dosadašnja istraţivanja su obuhvatila radiohemijsku karakterizaciju projektila, ispitivanjesadrţaja, distribucije i migracijeOU kroz različite segmente ţivotnesredine, mobilnost i veze sa prirodnim supstratima u zemljištu. Za analizu su korišćene radiohemijske analitičkeprocedure i tehnike kao što su separacija primenom jonskehromatografije,   primena   trasera,   elektrodepozicija,višestepene sekvencijalne ekstrakcije, fluorimetrijska, alfa spektrometrijska i gamaspektrometrijska merenja.  Dalja  ispitivanja  bi se mogla vršiti u pravcu specijacije OU, analize njegove kinetike i termodinamike u fizičko-hemijskim procesima u ţivotnoj sredini uz primenu komplementarnih analitičkih procedura i tehnika visoke osetljivosti i tehnika pogodnih za  mikroanalizu  čestica  ikarakterizaciju  materijala,  kao  što su HR ICP-MS, LSC, SIMS, μ-XANES itd., The  capabilities  of  study  on  environmental  contamination  caused  1999  by  NATO  air strikes  using  depleted  uranium  at  several  locations  in  southern  Serbia.  Having  in  mind passed time, implemented clean up activities in contaminated areas and no indication of significant  deviations  from  natural  levels  within  the  monitoring  assessment,  for  any further  studies  on  low  level  uranium  and  its  isotopes  concentrations  in  complex environmental  and  biological  samples,  the  advanced  and  more  sensitive  methods  and techniques   should   be   involved.   Up   to   now,   the   studies   on   the   radiochemical characterization of the projectile, depelted uranium contents, distribution and migration through the environmental departments and on ingress into natural substrates, have been conducted  using  the  radiochemical  analytical  procedures  and  techniques  like  ion chromatography   separations,   application   of   tracers,   electrodeposition,   multi-step sequential   extractions,   fluorometric,   alpha   spectrometric   and   gama   spectrometric measurements. The topic of further studies may be depleted uranium speciation, kinetic and   thermodynamic   analysis   of   its   behaviour   in   environmental   physicochemical processes  so  that  complementary  highly  sensitive  analytical  procedures  and  techniques as  well  as  techniques  suitable  for  particles  microanalysis  and  materials  chracterization, like HR ICP-MS, LSC, SIMS,μ-XANES, etc, should be considered.",

AB  - Berilijum-7 (7Be)je radioaktivni berilijumov izotop koji nastaje u interakcijama kosmič-kog zračenja sa atomima atmosfere. Intenzitet kosmičkog zračenja usled nehomogenosti magnetnog polja Zemlje, ispoljava prostornu distribuciju, dok je vremenska distribucija posledica vremenski promenljivog magnetnog polja Sunca. Cilj ovog istraţivanja je da se  izvrši  analiza  uticaja  vremenske  promene  intenziteta  kosmičkog  zračenja  na koncentraciju7Be  u  kompozitnim  mesečnim  uzorcima  ukupnog  (suvog  i  mokrog) depozita. Uzorci depozita su sakupljani u Institutu za nuklearne nauke "Vinča", a sva merenja  koncentracije 7Be su uraĎena u Laboratoriji za zaštitu od zračenja i zaštitu ţivotne sredine. Rezultati merenja uzoraka prikupljenih u periodu od 1994. do 2016. su korelirani sa mesečnim podacima o intenzitetu kosmičkog zračenja iz istog perioda, preuzetim  sa  sajta  stanice "Apatity", Polarnog geofizičkog instituta, Ruske akademije nauka.  Ova  stanica  poseduje  neutronski  monitor  "Standard  18-NM-64"  lociran  na nadmorskoj  visini  od  181  m  sa  geografskim  koordinatama  od  N:67,57°  i  E:33,39°. TakoĎe, rezultati merenja oba posmatrana parametra su grupisani po godinama i mese-cima u godini, a zatim su odreĎeni njihovi godišnji i mesečni indeksi. Nakon toga, za ispitane  parametre  su  meĎusobno  korelirani  kako  godišnji,  tako  i  njihovi  mesečni indeksi. Dobijeni rezultati ukazuju da fluktuacije kosmičkog zračenja utiču samo na varijacije  godišnjih  indeksa  koncentracije7Be   u   ukupnom   depozitu.   Koeficijent determinacije godišnjih indeksa posmatranih parametara govori da se modulisanošću kosmičkog zračenja moţe objasniti 33% varijacije godišnjih vrednosti koncentracije 7Be u depozitu.
AB  - Beryllium-7 (7Be) is a radioactive beryllium isotope that is produced in the interaction of cosmic radiation with atmospheric atoms. Due to the heterogenous of the Earth's magnetic  field,  the  intensity  of  cosmic  radiation  exhibits  spatial  distribution,  while  the time  distribution  is  a  consequence  of  the  time-varying  magnetic  field  of  the  Sun.  The aim  of thisresearch  is  to  analyzethe  influence  of  the  intensity  of  cosmic  radiation  on the 7Be concentration in samples of the total (dry and wet) deposit. The deposit samples were  collected  at  the  Vinţa  Institute  of  Nuclear  Sciences,  and  all 7Be  concentration measurements  were  performedin  the  Department  of  Radiation  and  Environmental Protection.  The  results  of  the  measurements  were  collected  in  the  period  from  1994  to 2016 and they were correlated with the monthly neutron monitor data of the "Apatity",the Polar Geophysical Institute, the Russian Academy of Sciences. This station has the neutron  monitor  "Standard  18-NM-64"  located  at  the  altitude  of  181  m  with  geogra-phical coordinates of N:  67.57° and E: 33.39°. Also, the results of the measurement of both  observed  parameters  are  grouped  by  years  and  months  of  the  year,  and  then  their annual and monthly indices were determined. After that, the annual as well as monthly indices  of  the  observed  parameters  were  correlated.  The  obtained  results  indicate  that the fluctuations in the galactic part of cosmic radiation affect the variation of the annual 7Be  concentration  index  in  the  deposit.  The  coefficient  of  determining  the  annual indices  of  the  observed  parameters  shows  that  the  modulation  of  cosmic  radiation  can explain  33%  of  the  variation of  the  annual  values of the concentration of 7Be in the deposit.

AB  - Tricijum, radioaktivni izotop vodonika ima i prirodno i antropogeno poreklo. Pri svom raspadu emituje niskoenergetsko beta zračenje i pri tom da bi bio detektovan mora se uvesti  u  aktivnu  zapreminu  detektora.  Za  detekcijuje  korišćen tečni  scintilacioni spektrometar  Ultra  Low  Level  Liquid  Scintillation  Spectrometer  Quantulus  1220.  U ovom  radu  prikazani  su  rezultati  sadrţaja  tricijuma  u  padavinama  sakupljenim  na referentnim  meteorološkim  stanicama  u  Srbiji  (Beograd,  Subotica,  Niš,  Zlatibor, Zaječar iVranje). Sadrţaj tricijuma je određenu kompozitnim mesečnim uzorcima, a period  ispitivanja  pokriva  2018.  godinu.  Rezultati  ispitivanja  pokazuju  da  su  dobijene vrednosti u padavinama ispod granica predviđenih zakonskom regulativom.
AB  - Tritium, the radioactive isotope of hydrogen, has a natural and anthropogenic origin. It emits low-energy beta radiation and, in order to be detected, it must be introduced into the  active  volume  of  the  detector.  For  detection,Ultra  Low  Level  Liquid  Scintillation Spectrometer  Quantulus  1220was  used.This  paper  presents  the  results  of  the  tritium content   in   precipitation   collected   at   reference   meteorological   stations   in   Serbia (Belgrade,  Subotica,  Niš,  Zlatibor,  Zajeţar  and  Vranje).  The  content  of  tritium  is determined in composite monthly samples, andthe test period covers 2018. The results show  that  the  obtained  values  in  precipitation  at  investigated  locations  are  below  the limits prescribed by the Serbian legislation.

Procena radioekoloških parametara za radioizotop 90-Sr u agroekosistemu

AB  - Translokacije  stabilnih  i  radioaktivnih  izotopa  iz  jedne  u  drugu  kariku  ekološkog sistema, kvantitativno i kvalitativno se opisuju preko odreĎenih ekoloških parametara. Procena radioekološke situacije je sprovedena odreĎivanjem različitih parametara koji predstavljaju objektivne pokazatelje radijacione sigurnosti za ciklus obrade zemljišta i biljne proizvodnje, čime je utvrĎena translokacija radionuklida 90Sr  u  agroekosistemu ispitivanog  područja.  U  sprovedenoj  studiji  su  prikazani  sledeći  radioekološki parametri:  transfer  faktor  zemljište -usev,  broj  stroncijumovih  jedinica,  koeficijent diskriminacije, koeficijent zaštite i K-parametar. Ovi parametri su izračunati na osnovu specifične aktivnosti radioizotopa 90Sr  i  koncentracije  ukupnog  kalcijuma  uzemljištu i usevima.  Rezultati  izračunavanja  radioekoloških  parametara  su  ukazali  na  sledeće činjenice: najveći deo radioizotopa 90Sr akumulira se u korenu useva, što potvrĎuje da je glavni mehanizam njegove akumulacije resuspenzija iz zemljišta; brzina akumulacije 90Sr u odnosu na ukupni Ca iz zemljišta zavisi od vrste zemljišta i useva, kao i od koncentracije ukupnog Ca u zemljištu.
AB  - Translocation  of  stabile  and  radioactive  isotopes  from  one  to  the  other  chain  in  the ecosystem  is  quantitatively  and  qualitatively  described  using  the  certain  ecological parameters. The   assesment   of   the   radioecological   situation   is   performed   by determination of different parameters that represent the objective indicators of radiation safety  for  processing  of  soil  and  plant  production.  In  this  way,  translocation  of 90Sr  in the  agro-ecosystem  of  the  investigated  areas  is  determined.  The  following  radiological parameters are presented in this study: soil-crop transfer factor, nuber of strontium units, discrimination  coefficient  and K-parameter.  These  parameters  are  calculated  based  on the specific activity of 90Sr and total Ca concentration in soil and crop. The results of the parameter calculation indicated that for the most part, 90Sr is acumulated in the root of the  crop,  which  confirmes  that  the  main  path  of  the  acumulation  is  the  resuspension from  soil; 90Sr  acumulation  rate,  in  comparison  to  total  Ca  in  soil,  depends  on  the  soil and crop type as well as the total Ca concentration in soil.

abstract = "Translokacije  stabilnih  i  radioaktivnih  izotopa  iz  jedne  u  drugu  kariku  ekološkog sistema, kvantitativno i kvalitativno se opisuju preko odreĎenih ekoloških parametara. Procena radioekološke situacije je sprovedena odreĎivanjem različitih parametara koji predstavljaju objektivne pokazatelje radijacione sigurnosti za ciklus obrade zemljišta i biljne proizvodnje, čime je utvrĎena translokacija radionuklida 90Sr  u  agroekosistemu ispitivanog  područja.  U  sprovedenoj  studiji  su  prikazani  sledeći  radioekološki parametri:  transfer  faktor  zemljište -usev,  broj  stroncijumovih  jedinica,  koeficijent diskriminacije, koeficijent zaštite i K-parametar. Ovi parametri su izračunati na osnovu specifične aktivnosti radioizotopa 90Sr  i  koncentracije  ukupnog  kalcijuma  uzemljištu i usevima.  Rezultati  izračunavanja  radioekoloških  parametara  su  ukazali  na  sledeće činjenice: najveći deo radioizotopa 90Sr akumulira se u korenu useva, što potvrĎuje da je glavni mehanizam njegove akumulacije resuspenzija iz zemljišta; brzina akumulacije 90Sr u odnosu na ukupni Ca iz zemljišta zavisi od vrste zemljišta i useva, kao i od koncentracije ukupnog Ca u zemljištu., Translocation  of  stabile  and  radioactive  isotopes  from  one  to  the  other  chain  in  the ecosystem  is  quantitatively  and  qualitatively  described  using  the  certain  ecological parameters. The   assesment   of   the   radioecological   situation   is   performed   by determination of different parameters that represent the objective indicators of radiation safety  for  processing  of  soil  and  plant  production.  In  this  way,  translocation  of 90Sr  in the  agro-ecosystem  of  the  investigated  areas  is  determined.  The  following  radiological parameters are presented in this study: soil-crop transfer factor, nuber of strontium units, discrimination  coefficient  and K-parameter.  These  parameters  are  calculated  based  on the specific activity of 90Sr and total Ca concentration in soil and crop. The results of the parameter calculation indicated that for the most part, 90Sr is acumulated in the root of the  crop,  which  confirmes  that  the  main  path  of  the  acumulation  is  the  resuspension from  soil; 90Sr  acumulation  rate,  in  comparison  to  total  Ca  in  soil,  depends  on  the  soil and crop type as well as the total Ca concentration in soil.",

AB  - Human activities may lead to increased levels of naturally occurring radioactive material and heavy metals in waters relative to undisturbed natural environment, consequently to reduced safety of environment. Therefore, evaluation of water quality from coal-fired power plants is essential to both environmental protection and protection of the human health. In this paper the concentrations of metals (K, Sr, and Pb) and corresponding radionuclides (K-40, Sr-90, and Pb-210) for 22 water samples in the vicinity of five coal-fired power plants in Serbia were determined. The total metal concentrations were measured using an atomic absorption spectrometer. The activities of radionuclides K-40 and Pb-210 were determined by gamma spectrometry using HPGe detector, while the activity of Sr-90 was determined by radiochemical analytical method and measured using low-level gas proportional counter. The water pollution status was assessed by the prospective method that is defined in this study. The preliminary results indicated that operation of the coal-fired power plants has no significant impact on the surrounding environment with regard to the radiological characteristics and content of metals of the investigated waters that can be used for suitable in future applications.

Thermal analysis testing and natural radioactivity characterization of kaolin as building material

AB  - Kaolins are used in a multiplicity of industries because of unique physical and chemical properties. Relationships between thermal and radioactivity properties are discussed in its application as a building material. Super-fine kaolin powder with particle sizes about 30 mu m was analyzed. Simultaneous TGA/DTA analysis was performed on powder samples at various heating rates in an argon atmosphere. Based on investigated thermal properties, it was concluded that dehydroxylation process can vary depending on the characteristics of starting material. The maximum degree of the dehydroxylation (D (T)) was obtained at the lowest rate of heating (D (T) = 60.79% for 10 A degrees C min(-1)). With an increase in the heating rate, decline in D (T) value was observed. Based on comprehensive testing, it was identified that the degree of dehydroxylation does not drop below 50%. It was concluded that appointed experimental conditions seem sufficient admissible for obtaining degree of dehydroxylation (D (T)) higher than 50%. In order to safe use of kaolin as a building material from the standpoint of radiological safety, content of natural radionuclides was determined by gamma spectrometry.

AB  - One of the main problems in quantitative gamma-ray spectroscopy is the determination of detection efficiency, for different energies, source-detector geometries, and composition of samples or sources. There are, in principle, three approaches to this issue: experimental, numerical, and semiempirical. Semiempirical approach is based on the calculation of the efficiency for the measured sample on the basis of an experimental efficiency measured on the same detector, but with a calibration source that can be of different size, geometry, density, or composition—the so-called efficiency transfer. The aim of this paper is to analyze the semiempirical approach, using EFFTRAN and MEFFTRAN software as a typical example. These software were used in the Department of Radiation and Environmental Protection, Vinča Institute of Nuclear Sciences, on three HPGe detectors. The results were compared to the experimentally obtained efficiency, and further validation is performed by measuring reference materials issued within the framework of several interlaboratory intercomparisons. The analysis of the results showed that the efficiency transfer produces good results with the discrepancies within the limits of the measurement uncertainty. Also, for intercomparison measurement, u test criterion for the trueness of the result was applied showing that the majority of the obtained results were acceptable. Some difficulties were identified, and the ways to overcome them were discussed.

AB  - U radu je prikazana skrining metoda određivanja ukupne alfa i beta aktivnosti u
uzorcima glina. Merenja su obavljena na niskofonskom gasnom proporcionalnom
brojaču. Takođe je prikazan i uticaj datih glina na oscilatornu Briggs-Rauscher
reakciju. Briggs-Rauscher (BR) reakcija je oscilatorna reakcija, u kojoj je oksidacija
malonske kiseline (CH2(COOH)2) u prisustvu vodonik peroksida (H2O2) i kalijum
jodata (KIO3), katalizovana jonom mangana (Mn2+) u kiseloj (HClO4) sredini. Ova
reakcija se uspešno koristi kao matriks za određivanje koncentracije analita, kao i
njihove potencijalne antioksidativne/antiradikalske aktivnosti. U ovom radu, po prvi put
je upotrebljen BR reakcioni sistem kao medijum za ispitivanje različitih vrsta glina.
AB  - This paper presents the screening method for determination of the gross alpha and beta
activity in clay samples. The measurements were performed using a low-level gas
proportional counter. The influence of clays on the Briggs-Rauscher oscillatory
reaction is also shown. Briggs-Rauscher (BR) reaction is an oscillatory reaction in
which the oxidation of malonic acid (CH2(COOH)2) in the presence of hydrogen
peroxide (H2O2) and potassium iodate (KIO3) is catalyzed with manganese ions (Mn2+)
in acid medium (HClO4). This reaction is successfully used as a matrix to determine the
concentration of analytes, as well as their potential antioxidant/antiradical activity. In
this paper, for the first time, BR reaction system was used as a medium for investigation
different types of clay.

abstract = "U radu je prikazana skrining metoda određivanja ukupne alfa i beta aktivnosti u
uzorcima glina. Merenja su obavljena na niskofonskom gasnom proporcionalnom
brojaču. Takođe je prikazan i uticaj datih glina na oscilatornu Briggs-Rauscher
reakciju. Briggs-Rauscher (BR) reakcija je oscilatorna reakcija, u kojoj je oksidacija
malonske kiseline (CH2(COOH)2) u prisustvu vodonik peroksida (H2O2) i kalijum
jodata (KIO3), katalizovana jonom mangana (Mn2+) u kiseloj (HClO4) sredini. Ova
reakcija se uspešno koristi kao matriks za određivanje koncentracije analita, kao i
njihove potencijalne antioksidativne/antiradikalske aktivnosti. U ovom radu, po prvi put
je upotrebljen BR reakcioni sistem kao medijum za ispitivanje različitih vrsta glina., This paper presents the screening method for determination of the gross alpha and beta
activity in clay samples. The measurements were performed using a low-level gas
proportional counter. The influence of clays on the Briggs-Rauscher oscillatory
reaction is also shown. Briggs-Rauscher (BR) reaction is an oscillatory reaction in
which the oxidation of malonic acid (CH2(COOH)2) in the presence of hydrogen
peroxide (H2O2) and potassium iodate (KIO3) is catalyzed with manganese ions (Mn2+)
in acid medium (HClO4). This reaction is successfully used as a matrix to determine the
concentration of analytes, as well as their potential antioxidant/antiradical activity. In
this paper, for the first time, BR reaction system was used as a medium for investigation
different types of clay.",

AB  - Monitornig radioaktivnosti u okolini nuklearnih objekata jeste skup merenja, obrade i
interpretacije rezultata radijacionih i drugih parametara u cilju procene nivoa i
kontrole izlaganja stanovništva i životne sredine. Javno preduzeće „Nuklearni objekti
Srbije”, kao jedini operator nuklearnih objekata i nosilac licenci za obavljanje
nuklearnih aktivnosti u zemlji, u skladu sa važećom zakonskom regulativom, sprovodi
monitoring radioaktivnosti u životnoj sredini u okolini nuklearnih objekata, i to
ispitivanjem nivoa spoljašnjeg zračenja merenjem jačine ambijentalnog ekvivalenta
doze i ambijentalnog ekvivalenta doze gama zračenja u vazduhu, relevantnim meteorološkim merenjima i modelovanjem disperzije radioaktivnih polutanata u graničnom
sloju atomsfere. Kontrolu nivoa radioaktivne kontaminacije u vazduhu, padavinama,
površinskim vodama, rečnom sedimentu, vodi za piće, podzemnim vodama, otpadnim
vodama, zemljištu i hrani vrši Laboratorija za zaštitu od zračenja i zaštitu životne
sredine Instituta za nuklearne nauke „Vinča”, kao nezavisno ovlašćeno pravno lice. U
radu je prikazan pregled reprezentativnih rezultata monitoringa za period od 2014. do
2016. godine. U ispitivanim uzorcima iz životne sredine su detektovani prirodni
radionuklidi u koncentracijama karakterističnim za ispitivane medijume. Od proizvedenih radionuklida je detektovan samo 137Cs, čije je prisustvo u životnoj sredini u
detektovanim nivoima koncentracije posledica nuklearnih proba i akcidenata. Rezultati
ispitivanja nivoa spoljašnjeg zračenja pokazuju da nije bilo odstupanja od sigurnog
režima rada nuklearnih objekata.
AB  - Environmental radiation monitoring around nuclear facilities is a set of measurements,
processing and interpretation of the results of radiation and other parameters in order
to assess the level and control of exposure of the population and environment to
ionizing radiation. Public Company "Nuclear Facilities of Serbia", as the only operator
of nuclear facilities and holder of licenses to perform nuclear activities in the country,
in accordance with current legislation, conducts environmental radiation monitoring
around nuclear facilities, by examining the level of external radiation through ambient
gamma dose rate and ambient gamma dose measurements in the air, relevant
meteorological measurements on site and modeling of a dispersion of radioactive
pollutants in the boundary layer of atmosphere. Radioactive contamination level control
of the air, precipitation, surface water, river sediment, drinking water, ground water,
soil and food performs Laboratory for Radiation and Environmental Protection within
Institute for Nuclear Sciences "Vinca", as an independent authorized entity. This paper
presents an overview of the representative environmental radiation monitoring results
for the period from 2014 to 2016. In the examined samples from the environment, the
natural radionuclides were detected at concentration levels characteristic for the
examined media in the environment. Of the produced radionuclides, only 137Cs was
detected, whose presence in the environment at detected concentration levels is the
result of nuclear tests and accidents. The results of the radiation levels examination
show that there was no deviation from the safe mode of operation of nuclear facilities.

AB  - Zemljište kao značajna i nezaobilazna karika u lancu kruženja materije i energije u
prirodi, naročito je izloženo kontaminaciji. Zbog toga je od izuzetnog značaja praćenje
distribucije radioaktivnosti, posebno u obradivom zemljištu koje se koristi za intenzivnu
poljoprivrednu proizvodnju, čime se dobija uvid u kumulativnu depoziciju i disperziju
radioaktivnosti u ovom delu agroekosistema. U cilju određivanja radioaktivnosti
obradivog zemljišta jugoistočnog Beograda, izmerene su aktivnosti prirodnih
radionuklida: 210Pb, 238U, 235U, 226Ra, 232Th i 40K, primenom nuklearne tehnike gama
spektrometrije visoke rezolucije. U radu je prikazana vertikalna distribucija ispitanih
radionuklida u zemljištu i korelacija njihovih specifičnih aktivnosti sa fizičko-hemijskim
karakteristikama zemljišta. Izmerene specifične aktivnosti uzoraka zemljišta sa šest
lokacija su: 41-74 Bq kg-1 za 210Pb, 39-67 Bq kg-1 za 238U, 2,4-3,6 Bq kg-1 za 235U, 37-53 Bq kg-1 za 226Ra, 51-60 Bq kg-1 za 232Th i 540-670 Bq kg-1 za 40K. Raspodela ovih radionuklida po dubini zemljišnog profila, uglavnom zavisi od fine frakcije zemljišta - praha i gline, higroskopske vlažnosti, gustine, sadržaja humusa, CaCO3 i organskog
ugljenika u zemljištu. Naša analiza nije pokazala korelaciju između specifičnih
aktivnosti 210Pb i 226Ra i fizičko-hemijskih karakteristika ispitanih uzoraka zemljišta.
AB  - Soil represents a potential source of contamination of biota. Hence, tracking
distribution of radioactivity in the soil is very important, particularly in cultivated soil
used for intensive agricultural production, where it gives an insight into the cumulative
deposition and dispersion of radioactivity in that part of agroecosystems. To determine
the radioactivity of cultivated soil of southeast Belgrade, specific activities of natural
radionuclides 210Pb, 238U, 235U, 226Ra, 232Th and 40K were measured using high
resolution gamma spectrometry. This paper gives the vertical distribution of the
investigated radionuclides in the soil and a correlation of their specific activities with
the physico-chemical characteristics of the soil. The measured specific activities are
41-74 Bq kg-1 for 210Pb, 39-67 Bq kg-1 for 238U, 2,4-3,6 Bq kg-1 for 235U, 37-53 Bq kg-1
for 226Ra, 51-60 Bq kg-1 for 232Th and 540-670 Bq kg-1 for 40K. Pierson’s linear
correlation coefficients imply an association between the specific activities of 235U,
238U, 232Th and 40K and the physical and chemical soil characteristics in the
investigated area. The distribution of these radionuclides depends mostly on the content
of fine fraction - clay, but also on the content of humus, CaCO3 and organic carbon in
the soil. Our analysis shows no correlation between the specific activities of 210Pb and
226Ra and physico-chemical characteristics of the investigated soil samples.

Uticaj kalibracije efikasnosti na određivanje koncentracije Be7 i Pb210 u vazduhu

AB  - U ovom radu je prikazan pregled metoda kalibracije efikasnosti detektora za
gamaspektromertijsko određivanje koncentracije 7Be (477,6 keV) i 210Pb (46 keV) u
uzorcima vazduha u Laboratoriji za zaštitu odzračenja, Instituta "Vinča" u periodu od
1994. godine do danas. Za prvu procenu efikasnosti korišćeni su set tačkastih
referentnih materijala (Coffret d’etalon ECGS-2, Sacle, Franse) i planšeta punjena
aerosolnim prahom dobijenog za interkomparaciju u okviru projekta SEV, a od 2008.
godine u upotrebi su laboratorijski referentni materijali u matriksu aerosolnog praha u
geometriji fiole, pripremljeni sertifikovanim rastvorom radionuklida. Pređenjem

AB  - This paper presents a review of efficiency calibration methods for gamma spectrometry
detectors used in determination of 7
Be (477,6 keV) and 210Pb (46 keV) concentration in
air samples, conducted in Radiation and Environment Protection Laboratory, Institute
"Vinča", in the period from year 1994. up to date. The first efficiency estimate was

Workshop on Determination of Low Activity Radio-Caesium in Freshwater, kao deo
projekta RER/7/008 - Strengthening Capabilities for Radionuclide Measurement in
the Environment and Enhancing Quality Assurance/Quality Control System for
Environmental Monitoring. Ukupno 31 laboratorija iz 29 zemalja Evrope i Japana,
uzela je učešća u ovoj radionici. Pre početka radionice, laboratorije učesnice su dobile
uzorke površinske vode iz Japana i Dunava, kao i QA/QC uzorak vode poznate
aktivnosti, za interkomparaciju. Zadatak je bio određivanje veoma niske koncentracije
134Cs i 137Cs u ovim uzorcima, uz korišćenje različitih metoda pripreme – prekoncentracije uzoraka. Laboratorije učesnice su u pripremi koristile uparavanje do suvog
ostatka ili definisane zapremine, hemijsko obogaćivanje ili jon – izmenjivačke metode,
sa ciljem da se concentriše sadržaja radiocezijuma u uzorcima. Iako su ispitivani radionuklidi bili prisutni u koncentracijama reda veličine 10-2 Bq/kg, rezultati laboratorija
učesnica su bili u velikoj većini prihvaćeni. Ipak, identifikovani su neki problem vezani
za prinos metode u hemijskom obogaćivanju i gubitke prilikom uparavanja.
U ovom radu biće predstavljen pregled rezultata ove interkomparacije i analiziran
uticaj metode pripreme uzoraka na dobijene rezultate.
AB  - Workshop named Data Evaluation Workshop on Determination of Low Activity
Radio-Caesium in Freshwater was held in February 2017 in Vienna, as a part of
project RER/7/008 - Strengthening Capabilities for Radionuclide Measurement in the
Environment and Enhancing Quality Assurance/Quality Control System for
Environmental Monitoring. Total of 31 participating laboratories from 29 European
countries and Japan took part in this workshop. Prior to the workshop, the participating
laboratories received samples of fresh water from Japanese rivers and Danube, as well
as the QA/QC sample of known activity. The task was to determine very low
concentrations of 134Cs and 137Cs in these samples using some method of sample
preparation - preconcentration. The laboratories used total evaporation, evaporation to
a finite volume, chemical enrichment and ion exchange methods in order to concentrate
the radiocaesium in the samples. Despite the very low concentration of analytes in the
samples (order of magnitude 10-2 Bq/kg), the results of participating laboratories were
for the most part acceptable. However, some difficulties regarding chemical yield in
chemical enrichment procedures and loss of the sample during evaporation were
identified.
The aim of this paper is to represent the overall results of the said intercomparison and
to analyze the influence of the preparation method on the obtained results.

AB  - U radu je prikazana optimizacija uslova merenja na tečnom scintilacionom
spektrometru Ultra Low Level Liquid Scintillation Spectrometer Quantulus 1220 u cilju
određivanja tricijuma u uzorcima voda. Opisan je postupak određivanja efikasnosti,
optimalnog odnosa zapremine uzorka i scintilacionog koktela i optimalno vreme
merenja. Instrument je predviđen za merenje niskih aktivnosti tricijuma u uzorcima
prirodnih voda. U tu svrhu uzorci površinskih voda i padavina su elektrolitički
obogaćeni i kao takvi mereni na spektrometru. Rezultati pokazuju da su dobijene
aktivnosti tricijuma u datim vodama ispod granica predvidjenih zakonskom
regulativom.
AB  - The paper presents the optimization of the measurement conditions for Ultra Low Level
Liquid Scintillation Spectrometer Quantulus 1220 in order to determine the tritium
activity in water samples after electrolytic enrichment. The procedure included
determination of efficiency, background, minimal detectable activity, the optimal ratio
of the sample volume and scintillation cocktail and the optimal measurement time. The
instrument is designed to measure low activity of tritium in natural water samples. For
this purpose, samples of surface waters and precipitation are electrolytically enriched
and as such are measured on a spectrometer.

AB  - The results referring to radioactivity analysis in soil, water, plant, coal, slag and flying ash samples from the environment around two power plants Nikola Tesla A and Kolubara for 2015 are explained. The analysis of samples was performed by gamma spectrometry using HPGe detector. In the investigated soil, flying ash, slag and coal samples, naturally occurring radionuclides Ra-226, Th-232, K-40, U-235, U-238, as well as the man-made radionuclide Cs-137, were detected. The highest values of natural radionuclides were obtained in flying ash samples, which is known for the effect of concentrating the combustion of coal. In plant samples, beside these radionuclides, Pb-210 and 7Be were also detected. In water samples, Ra-226 and K-40 were detected, while the concentrations of Th-232, U-235, U-238 and Cs-137 were below the minimum detectable concentration. In water (river, drinking, drain and overflow) samples, beside the gamma spectrometry analysis, gross alpha and gross beta activity was also determined. The obtained values for gross alpha and beta activity in these water samples are in accordance with the current legislation in Serbia (Official Gazette 86/11), which refers only to drinking water. The results presented in this paper showed that there was no significant difference in the activity of radionuclides in all investigated samples compared to the values obtained in previous years.

Radioaktivnost atmosfere u Institutu za nuklearne nauke "Vinča" u periodu 1985-2015

AB  - Institutu za nuklearne nauke "Vinča", dugi niz godina praćena je vremenska distribucija aktivnosti prirodnih i veštačkih radionuklida u prizemnom sloju atmosfere i padavinama. Aktivnosti prirodnih radionuklida 7Be i 210Pb, kao i veštačkog radionuklida 137Cs, određene su gamaspektrometrijskom metodom, dok je aktivnost 3H (može biti i prirodnog i veštačkog porekla) određena metodom tečne scintilacione spektrometrije. Ujedno je ispitivana i ukupna beta aktivnost, koja predstavlja indikatorsko merenje nivoa kontamincije atmosfere. U periodu
ispitivanja, dogodila su se dva velika nuklearna akcidenta, 1986. u Černobilju i 2011. u Fukušimi, koja su doprinela povećanju koncentracije veštačkih radionuklida u životnoj sredini. U toku ovih događaja, praćena je dnevna promena koncentracije veštačkih radionuklida 137Cs, 134Cs i 131I u atmosferi. Na osnovu rezultata dugogodišnjih merenja, određene su srednje mesečne koncentracije aktivnosti, pokretne sredine kao i mesečni i kvartalni indeksi za navedene radionuklide, iz kojih su uočeni sezonski efekti. Maksimalne aktivnosti 7Be i 3H dostižu u letnjem, a minimalne u zimskom periodu. U slučaju 210Pb, aktivnosti su bile maksimalne u jesenjim, a minimalne u prolećnim mesecima. Za radionuklid 137Cs, maksimalne aktivnosti su dobijene u mesecima prelaska proleća u leto i jeseni u zimu (manje izražen maksimum).
AB  - A long term measurements of temporal distribution of naturally occurring and artificial radionuclides in the ground level air are conducted for many years in the Institute for Nuclear Sciences "Vinča". Activity of naturally occurring radionuclides 7Be i 210Pb and artificial radionuclide 137Cs is determined via gamma spectrometry and activity of 3H in precipitation (which can be both naturally occurring and artificial) is determined using liquid scintilation spectrometry. Along these, gross alpha and beta activity measurements are also conducted. These measurements represent the indicative of atmospheric contamination. During the period of this monitoring, two major nuclear accidents have taken place – the one in Chernobyl 1986 and the accident in Fukushima 2011, that have contributed to the rise in the activity concentration of the artificial radionuclides 137Cs, 134Cs , 131I and 3H in the environment. Based on the results of these long term measurements, average monthly activities, monthly and seasonal indices for the mentioned radionuclides were determined and seasonal periodical effects were noticed. Maximum values of 7Be and 3H were noticed in summer and minimum values were noticed in the winter. In case of 210Pb, activity concentration reached its maximum in autumn and minimum in spring. For 137Cs, maximal values were detected in the months between the season of spring and summer and autumn to winter (less pronounced maximum).
