AB - In this article, the X-ray and gamma-ray coincidence summing effect in Eu-152 is studied. Coincidence summing corrections and peak and total efficiencies of point and volume sources were determined using the direct matrices multiplication (DMM) method. The theoretically evaluated peak count rates were found to be in good agreement with the experimentally obtained values. Validation was performed by comparing the calculated efficiency curves and the corresponding correction factors with the results obtained using GESPECOR 4.2 software. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. AB - A study of coincidence summing of X- and gamma rays of Se-75 has been presented in this paper. The computation of the Se-75 spectra was performed by application of the previously published theory by Novkovi et al. The method enables the treatment of all possible single and sum peaks of Se-75. The calculation gave the 419 decay path outcomes, resulting in 84 peak count rate equations and also the total count rate equation. By HPGe spectrometers with 15% and 18% relative efficiency, 20 and 30 peaks were recorded, respectively. Some simplification of the decay scheme was introduced and existing metastable level had to be treated separately. Nevertheless, the experimental values of the peak count rates were in good agreement with the theoretical evaluation. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

AB - The direct measurement of Ba-133 source activity by the application of the theoretical count rate equations has been recently developed by Novkovic et al. The analytical and Monte Carlo calculation of activity measurement uncertainties were described in previously published papers for the case of one recorded spectra. The procedure of uncertainty calculation for a sequence of successively recorded spectra, enabling the determination of the correlation between peak count rates, is presented in this paper. The uncertainty of activity obtained by the described method is caused by the uncertainty of the experimentally obtained input data and uncertainties of the used nuclear decay data.

AB - The results of experimental testing of the digital multichannel analyzer which digitalizes the signal after a preamplifier are presented. The recordings of some of the characteristics of the spectrometer containing a digital MCA, such as full-peak efficiency, net-area ratio of the two peaks and the stability of the peak position, were carried out under different input counting rates, with different radioactive sources. The tested MCA has shown some excellent features, like the stability of the peak position over a long-term period and flexibility in the adjusting of optimum measurement conditions. However, the performed tests have also shown some serious and unexpected disadvantages of the digital MCA when it operates under certain circumstances, one of them having to do with the automatic tuning of live-time correction at low-input counting rates.

AB - A new method for theoretical calculation of coincidence summing of X- and gamma rays for germanium spectrometers has been presented. The counting rate equations, derived by this method, enable to determinate peak efficiencies as well as the activity of the source. The root of the counting rate equations can be determined by commercial mathematical programs. The method was applied to the decay of Ce-139 and the derived relationships were compared with the Koruns and Martincics results obtained by matrix formalism. The method was also applied to the decay of Co-57 and the calculated results were confirmed by the experiment. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - A study of the coincidence summing of X- and gamma-rays of Ba-133 has been presented. The detailed computation of the Ba-133 spectra was performed by application of the previously published theory by Novkovic et al. The theory is based on tracking all decay paths and their outcomes, i.e., deposited energies in the detector and probabilities for those events. The method enables to treat all possible single and sum peaks of Ba-133. The calculations gave the 1788 decay path outcomes, resulting in 167 peak count rates equations and also total count rate equation. More than 50 peaks were recorded by an HPGe spectrometer with 50% relative efficiency. The experimental values of the peak count rates were in good agreement with the theoretical evaluation. AB - The surface air samples collected in the first half of May 1986 at VinčaBelgrade site were prepared and measured at the end of the 1991 and beginning of the 1992. year. Activity concentrations of the 137Cs immediately after the Chernobyl accident were determined by means of gamma spectrometry, while the air activity concentration of 238Pu and 239,240Pu were determined by alpha spectrometry, after the plutonium radiochemical separation. The 236Pu was used as a tracer. The same samples were remeasured after 13 years, during the 2004. The surface air activity concentrations of 241Pu were estimated by a 241Am in-growth method. The built up activities of 236Pu progenies were determined from the recorded spectra and also calculated using the Bateman’s equations. The 241Am activity in the remeasured samples, obtained by complex spectral analysis was confirmed by gamma spectrometry. The 241Pu activity concentration in measured air samples ranged from 240 µBq/m3 to 7800 µBq/m3 . The average activity concentration ratio 241Pu/239,240Pu originated from Chernobyl accident was approximately 100.

The decay of 198Au nuclei was followed by the precise measurement of the decay constant over the time interval of 1.3 half-life in the time period from 0.02 to 25 half-lives after the irradiation. No deviations from the exponential law have been detected within the limits of the experimental error. The measured value of the 198Au half-life was in good agreement with the previously measured value.

AB - The content of impurities in gold foils intended for neutron flux measurements has been determined. The gold foils were irradiated by a high neutron flux and the activities of the activated impurities were measured after a cooling period of 48 days by a HPGe spectrometer. The activated impurities were Zn and Ag, and their content was determined from the measured activities ratio of the isotopes Zn-65 and Ag-110m to Au-198. The activated isotopes have longer half-lives than Au-198 and they could be measured after the cooling period. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

AB - The methods that use scintillation counting with ZnS(Ag) scintillation detector are widely used for gross alpha activity determination. Optimal counting conditions could be provided by properly setting of operating voltage and by this means, the long term stability could be achieved. The common criteria for the selection of optimal counting conditions for a ZnS(Ag) scintillation detector do not consider simultaneously operating voltage and discrimination level variation. In present method a relationship between voltage supply and discrimination level is derived for counting efficiency.

AB - Thermal neutrons produce isotopes of Au-198 and Au-199 in the two successive (n,y) reactions in irradiated gold. The ratio of their activities is proportional to the flux of the thermal neutrons, which was used for determination of the intensity of the flux. This method of determination of the flux of thermal neutrons is appropriate when the mass of the irradiated gold is not known. The comparison of the values of the flux of thermal neutrons obtained by this method and by the classical method of the activity measurement of Au-198 shows good agreement. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. At this time no commercial offer of various I detectors, measuring sensors, other measuring devices were not been commercially available. Therefore young physicists were collected ill working groups with the task in diploma work, master degrees, to create and to build up the own instrumentation. During the years the ionising radiation ad heat metrology, in some metrology branch, maturated up to the world scientific level. Two groups in ionizing radiation metrology and a large heat and temperature metrology laboratory were organized. The primary heat and temperature standardization, as well as the primary standards in heat, temperature, radioactivity measurements and ionizing radiation dosimetry group were as the National metrology laboratory completed. The both of them, were by international intercomparaisons own meteorological qualification verified. Very similar metrology developments were in other research institutes in this paper presented. So, Institute of Physics and Faculty of Sciences at the Belgrade University has been performed black body temperature measurements, which some of them are currently for the customer produced, are also ill paper treated. Metrology education at the universities and pos-graduate level with syllabus program at the tree Serbian Universities in Belgrade, Novi Sad and Kragujevac are in paper described. Standardization of physical quantities, units, physical constants in International Measuring System-SI is also described. AB - The mechanism of detection of chemical vapors in air by an ionization chamber supplied by DC and AC voltage has been described. The theoretical explanation is based on numerical solutions of the differential equations of the cylindrical ionization chamber. The current of the ionization chamber operating in the AC regime has two components: a conductive component, caused by the ions drifts, and a capacitive component, caused by the distortion of the electric field. The ionization chamber operating in the DC regime has only the first component; hence the AC supplied chamber has larger response than the DC supplied chamber.

The system has been solved numerically for plane-parallel and spherical ionization chambers filled with air. The comparison of the calculated results of Armstrong and Tate, for plane-parallel ionization chambers, and Sprinkle and Tate, for spherical ionization chambers, with the present calculations has shown a good agreement. The calculated values for ionization chambers filled with CO2 were also in good agreement with the experimental data of Moriuchi et al.

The most frequently used application of these detectors was in measurements and analyses of alpha spectra. However, analysis of spectra gained here presented a silicon surface barrier detector showing possibilities of their wider application in various nuclear techniques and technologies. This specially referes to the feasibility of their use in the conditions that are different from those in laboratories, such as mines, surroundings of nuclear power plants etc. Recorded spectra from Co-57, show that SE detectors are very acceptable in nuclear laboratories for nuclear spectroscopy at room temperatures. On the contrary, field application in nuclear techniques connected with the protection of the environment and counting systems is much wider, and the detector temperature could reach 60 degrees C. AB - The differential equations of the cylindrical ionization chamber filled with air have been solved numerically for different ratios of the outer and inner electrode for both polarities of the voltage supply. The obtained distributions of the electric field strength inside the chamber confirm the analysis of Thomson and Thomson and the calculations made by Mie. The calculated collection efficiencies are in good agreement with the results of the calculation of Sprinkle and Tate, and with the experimental data of Moriuchi et al.
