AB - The thermodynamic assessment of the Ti-O system was carried out by the CALPHAD method using the associate model for the liquid phase and the compound energy formalism for the solid phases. The derived set of parameters gives reasonable representation of the phase equilibria and thermodynamic properties of phases in the Ti-O system, while providing good extrapolation capability. AB - One of the methods for powder synthesis that is both cost and time effective is the self-propagating room temperature synthesis. We applied this method to synthesize rare earth doped ceria nanopowders. Since they exhibit very high ionic conductivity at intermediate temperatures these compositions are attractive for a new generation of nanostructured ceramics applicable in solid oxide fuel cells as electrolytes. In this paper we paid our attention to the reaction based on methathetical pathway, whereby solid solution nanopowders of rare earth elements with ceria were obtained at room temperature. Compositions of Ce1-xRexO2-delta (Re = Y, Nd) were synthesized with x ranging from 0 to 0.20. The reaction course is discussed and the properties of the obtained powders are presented.

The thermodynamic properties of the phases are described using compound energy formalism (CEF) for the various solid phases and a solution model for the liquid. Three boundary systems PbO-ZrO2, PbO-TiO2 and ZrO2-TiO2 are reassessed based on the most recent experimental data, while the ternary PbO-TiO2-ZrO2 System is modelled for the first time. Calculated phase diagrams are compared with the experimental data.

AB - Light and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction analysis, hardness and uniaxial tensile tests have been applied to study the mechanism and kinetics of aging of the Cu-5 wt.% Ni-2.5 wt.% Ti alloy under the influence of static and dynamic conditions. Hardening of alloy during aging is a consequence of precipitation of (Ni, Cu)(3)Ti secondary particles with the hcp crystal structure, i.e., the same as the eta phase (Ni3Ti). During static (SSA) and dynamic strain aging (DSA), the strength of the alloy is increased compared to quench aging (QA). This effect is most pronounced during the dynamic process. The total concentration of vacancies participating in the process of DSA is increased compared to the vacancy concentration during SSA and QA. This may be explained by the fact that vacancies are not annihilated at dislocations, but their concentration is preserved through the vacancy - precipitate reaction.

AB - The thermodynamic assessment of the ternary Cu-Pb-O system was carried out by the CALPHAD method. The thermodynamic properties of the phases are described using a compound energy formalism (CEF) for the various solid phases and an ionic two-sublattice model for the liquid. The thermodynamic parameters of the sub-systems Cu-O, Pb-O and Cu-Pb are adopted from recent assessments. Ternary interaction parameters of the liquid phase have been optimized on the base of the selected literature data (phase diagram and activity of oxygen). The ternary system shows a large liquid miscibility gap of peculiar shape, which connects to the miscibility gaps in each of the binary sub-systems. Calculated phase diagrams are compared with the experimental data.

AB - ddThe effect of Al2O3 and SiC particles on microstructure and strength (compression) of ZA27 (zinc-based alloy) was studied. Two composites were produced by compocasting process, i.e. particles of strengtheners were continuously added to the semi-solid melt which was vigorously stirred. The concentration and size of strengtheners were approximately the same, i.e. 3wt.% and 15 mum, respectively. Comparative investigations of microstructure (optical and scanning electron microscope) and compression strength (from room temperature to 170 degreesC) of composites and the corresponding as-cast alloy, produced by standard melting and casting process, were carried out. The dendritic structure was nearly completely removed by compocasting process, whereas a rather inhomogeneous distribution of strengtheners (particularly Al2O3) in the matrix was achieved. The strength of both composites was superior to that of as-cast alloy, the difference being greater with increase in temperature. The effect of Al2O3 and SiC particles on matrix strengthening was approximately the same.
