AB - Hierarchically assembled TiO2 nanoparticles into larger spherical ones were obtained using aerosol-assisted processing method. Unagglomerated particles with the mean size of 440 nm were obtained from colloidal solution of TiO2 nanoparticles (~4.5 nm) using ultrasonic spray pyrolysis at 550°C. Their morphological complexity and structural polymorphism were investigated by using X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) coupled with selected area electron diffraction (SAED) analysis. Pronounced evolution of nanocrystalline TiO2(B) phase assembled together with the anatase building units (sized ~15 nm) in uniform submicrometric particles implicate their feasibility to be used in dye-sensitised solar cells and lithium ion batteries.

AB - We report on the possibility to build hierarchically organized three-dimensional (3D) titania spherical particles having high surface-to-volume-ratio, by aerosol processing of nanotubular building blocks. Morphology and crystal structure of titania based spherical assemblies, obtained in the temperature range from 150 to 650 degrees C, were characterized by means of scanning and transmission electron microscopy, x-ray powder diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. Initial shape of 1D building units, nanotubes, was well preserved in the spherical assemblies processed at 150 and 450 degrees C. Processing at 650 degrees C resulted in a collapse of the nanotubular building blocks and formation of the assemblies of irregularly shaped TiO2 nanoparticles. Structural analysis revealed several phase transitions in titania spherical assemblies in course with the temperature increase indicating possibility of in-situ phase composition adjustment during aerosol processing. AB - Hierarchically organized functional nanomaterials are of interest for potential use in electrochemical, catalytic and gas-sensing applications due to their unique structural organization defined on different length scales. Here we present the application of the aerosol processing route in generation of hierarchically organized nanostructured TiO2 particles. Particles are obtained by the thermal decomposition of aerosol generated by atomization of colloidal TiO2 solution with a low-intensity ultrasound generator operating at the high frequency of 1.7 MHz. By a proper choice of the precursors type and concentration, as well as processing parameters (temperature of aerosol decomposition and the residence time of droplet/particle), fine control over both the submicron- and nanometer-length scales of spherically structured TiO2 was achieved. The median diameter and the crystallite size of titania particles were found to be tunable from 350 to 450 nm and from 2.5 to 50 nm, respectively. Moreover, it was shown that the structural complexity of the particles synthesized at the lower processing temperatures might be further extended by their surface sensitization with several bidentate ligands. The results obtained demonstrate advantages of ultrasonic spray pyrolysis route in synthesis of hierarchically organized functional nanomaterials.

AB - Sub-micronic, spherical Y2O3:Yb/Er particles comprising clustered nano-units (70 nm) were prepared via ultrasonic spray pyrolysis from pure nitrate precursor solutions with different Yb/Er dopant ratios. The particles were additionally thermally treated at 1100 degrees C for 12, 24 and 48 h. The structural and morphological characteristics of particles were studied by X-ray powder diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray analysis and specific surface area (BET) and were further correlated with their advanced optical properties. For the recorded up-conversion emissions, originating from the following Er3+ transitions: [H-2(9/2) - GT I-4(15/2)] in blue (407-420 nm); [H-2(11/2), S-4(3/2) - GT I-4(15/2)] green: 510-590 nm; and [F-4(9/2) - GT I-4(15/2)] in red (640-720 nm) spectral region, the corresponding lifetimes were acquired in the wide temperature range (10-300 K). The most intense green up-conversion emission with the long decay of 550 ms is recorded for Y1.97Yb0.02Er0.01O3 particles thermally treated at 1100 degrees C for 24 h. AB - Rod-like and flake-like up-converting Y2O3:Yb3+/Ho3+ particles which are composed of nanoparticles with size less than 100 nm, are prepared by a simple hydrothermal processing at 473 K (3 h) followed by additional thermal treatment at 1373 K (3 and 12 h). The effect of precursor pH value on the formation of Y2O3:Yb3+/Ho3+ is followed through X-ray powder diffractometry (XRPD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Structural refinement confirms formation of the cubic bixbyte structure (S. G. Ia-3) with the non-uniform accommodation of dopants at C-2 and S-6 cationic sites. Under 978 nm laser excitation, strong green (530-570 nm) up-conversion is observed in all samples. The emission shows a decrease in intensity with an increase in external temperature, indicating FIR (fluorescence intensity ratio) based temperature sensing behavior of 0.52% for the F-5(4) - GT I-5(8)/S-5(2) - GT I-5(8) transitions. AB - Theoretical and experimental investigation of the particle formation during processing of colloidal nanoparticles in aerosol laminar flow reactor is presented. Simple analytical model taking into consideration all important process parameters, such as physico-chemical properties of the colloidal solution, initial droplet size, residence time and temperature, is developed in order to predict the final particle morphology. The formation of spherical, hierarchically organized, ~450 nm sized TiO2 particles has been followed at 150°C starting from colloidal TiO2 nanoparticle (~4.5 nm) solution as precursor. It has been shown that the final particle morphology is formed in the evaporation/drying stage through the self assembly processes of colloidal nanoparticles collision and aggregation. The dimensionless numbers Re, Nu, Pr and Bi, were used in modeling to briefly describe the transport properties in dispersed system and heat and mass transport phenomena. The predicted particle size and morphology is confirmed by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM/FESEM) and laser diffraction particle size analyzer (LPS). Additionally, closer morphological investigation is performed with transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and nanotomography. Correspondingly, theoretical analysis under this study presents a simple procedure to predict the final morphology and mean particle size during aerosol processing.

AB - The low-temperature (T=150oC) aerosol route, representing a feasible bottom-up technique for nano materials processing in disperse system, was applied for the synthesis of spherical, non-agglomerated, hierarchically organized titanium dioxide (TiO2) nano-particles. The diverse levels of structural, morphological and functional complexity were explored simply by means of appropriate selection of different colloidal precursor solutions of either nearly spherical nano-particles[1] (a), surface modified nano-particles with dopamine (b) or nano-tubes (c). The detailed structural and morphological investigations were done by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), laser particle size (LPS) analysis, scanning and field emission electron microscopy (SEM/FESEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Spherical, submicronic, soft and grained TiO2 particles with the mean size from ~350 to ~450nm and with clustered inner structure, composed of primary nanocrystals (<10nm), were obtained. The optical properties and surface structure were analyzed by UV-Vis diffusive reflectance (UV-Vis DRS) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The obtained results offer a general route for the synthesis of self-assemblies with tunable morphology and optical properties. A significant decrease of the effective band gap values (1.7 to 1.9eV) for the processed TiO2 nanoparticles, compared to the band gap of bulk material (3.2eV), was achieved. Such hierarchical nano-structured powders, are expected to have potential application not only in the field of photovoltaic technologies[3] but also in various aspects of photo catalysis.[4]References:[1] Dugandžić I.M., Jovanović D.J., Mančić L.T., Zheng N., Ahrenkiel S.P., Milošević O.B., Šaponjić Z.V. and Nedeljković J.M., 2012 Surface modification of submicronic TiO2 particles prepared by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis for visible light absorption, J. AB - Spherical, submicronic TiO2 powder particles were prepared in the low temperature process of ultrasonic spray pyrolysis (150 °C) by using as a precursor aqueous colloidal solutions consisting of surface modified 45 Å TiO2 nanoparticles with dopamine. Detailed structural and morphological characterization of colored submicronic TiO2 spheres was performed by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), laser particle size analysis and FTIR techniques. Also, optical characterization of both dopamine-modified TiO2 precursor nanoparticles and submicronic TiO2 powder particles was performed using absorption and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, respectively. A significant decrease of the effective band gap (1.9 eV) in dopamine-modified TiO2 nanoparticles compared to the band gap of bulk material (3.2 eV) was preserved after formation of submicronic TiO2 powder particles in the process of ultrasonic spray pyrolysis under mild experimental conditions. Due to the nanostructured nature, surface-modified assemblage of TiO2 nanoparticles preserved unique ability to absorb light through charge transfer complex by photoexcitation of the ligand-to-TiO2 band, conventionally associated with extremely small TiO2 nanoparticles (d < 20 nm) whose surface Ti atoms, owing to the large curvature, have penta-coordinate geometry.

AB - Up-converting yttrium oxide powders doped with Yb3+ and co-doped with Ho3+ weresynthesized through hydrothermal processing at 200 °C/3 h. Reverse precipitation of the starting nitrates mixture is performed with the help of ammonium hydrogen carbonate (AHC) solution up to pH 7 or pH 9 prior to hydrothermal treatment. Morphological features of the as-prepared (asp)powders and rare earth oxides obtained after powders additional annealing at 1100 oC (3 and 12 h)are discussed based on X-ray powder diffractometry (XRPD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Structural refinement confirmed generation of the cubic bixbyte-structure (S.G. Ia-3) with non-uniform accomodation of dopants at C2 and S6 cationic sites. SEM revealed that the particles have plate-like or rod-like morphology in dependence of hydrothermal processing (pH). Due to the fact that are composed from nanograins (30-100 nm) they demonstrate prominent green luminescence centered at 550 nm after been excited with the infrared laser source (λ=978 nm).

abstract = "Up-converting yttrium oxide powders doped with Yb3+ and co-doped with Ho3+ weresynthesized through hydrothermal processing at 200 °C/3 h. Due to the fact that are composed from nanograins (30-100 nm) they demonstrate prominent green luminescence centered at 550 nm after been excited with the infrared laser source (λ=978 nm).",

AB - Nanocrystalline up-converting Y₂ O₃Yb³⁺ Er³⁺ phosphor particles were processed in a dispersed system-aerosol, generated ultrasonically at 1.3 MHz from common nitrate precursor solution having fixed ytterbium-to-erbium concentration ratio. The appropriate process parameters: residence time 21 s, carrier gas (air) flow rate 1.6 dm3/min, synthesis temperature 900 °C, led to the formation of un-agglomerated spherical nanostructured secondary particles, having mean particle size of approx 450 nm, composed of primary nanoscaled (20 nm) subunits. In order to reach targeting phase crystallinity, the as-prepared particles were additionally annealed at 1100 °C in air for 12, 24 and 48 h, respectively. Particle structure, morphology and purity were analyzed by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), scanning electron microscopy (FESEM/SEM), analytical and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM/HRTEM) in combination with energy dispersive X-ray analysis and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). All samples crystallized in a cubic bixbyte-structure, space group Ia-3. The crystallite size changed with annealing time from 30 nm in as-prepared sample to 135 nm in sample annealed for 48 h, respectively. Emission spectra were assigned to the following trivalent erbium f–f electronic transitions: ²H₉/₂ → ⁴I₁₅/₂ (blue: 407–420 nm), (²H₁₁/₂̦ ⁴S₃/₂) → ⁴I₁₅/₂ (green: 510–590 nm), and ⁴F₉/₂ → ⁴I₁₅/₂ (red: 640–720 nm). The significant improvement of the emission decay times were observed after thermal treatment and this effect is correlated further with the structural and morphological particles characteristics. For the anneal-ing time of 12 h a quite high emission decay times were achieved (blue: 0.14 ms, green: 0.32 ms and red: 0.39 ms).

AB - Recently, trivalent rare earth doped materials have received significant attention due to the strong temperature dependence of the fluorescence emission of these materials, which can be useful in temperature sensing. Here, we investigated Y2O3 ceramic powders doped with Yb3+ and co-doped with either Tm3+ or Ho3+. The powders were obtained via spray pyrolysis at 900 degrees C and additionally thermally treated at 1100 degrees C for 24 h. Structural characterization using X-ray powder diffraction confirmed the cubic bixbyte structure. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed that the particles exhibit a uniform spherical morphology. The up-conversion emissions were measured using laser excitation at 978 nm, resulting in the following transitions: blue emission in the range of 450-500 nm, weak red emission in the range of 650-680 nm and near infrared emission in the range of 765-840 nm for Tm3+, as well as green emission centered at 550 nm and weak near infrared emission at 755 nm for the Ho3+ ions. In addition, the temperature dependence of the fluorescence intensity ratios of different Stark components was analyzed in the range of 10-300 K. Significant temperature sensitivity was detected for several components, with the largest value of 0.097 K-1 related to the intensity ratio of I-536 and I-772 emissions observed for the Y2O3:Yb,Ho powder. AB - Over the past few years, rare-earth-ion-doped materials have attracted a great deal of interest due to their potential application as optical temperature sensors. The luminescence properties of these materials are sensitive and change with temperature. Here, we have investigated the properties of yttrium oxide powder co-doped with Yb3+ and Er3+, synthesized through the spray pyrolysis method at 900 degrees C and additionally thermally treated at 1100 degrees C for 24 h. The structural and morphological characterizations are carried out through x-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The obtained particles are spherical in shape and have cubic bixbyite structure with the space group Ia-3. Photoluminescent measurements (PL) are recorded in the temperature range from 10 to 300 K using 978 nm radiation. Emission spectra are assigned to the following trivalent erbium f-f electronic transitions: H-2(9/2) - GT I-4(15/2) (blue: 407-420 nm), (H-2(11/2), S-4(3/2)) - GT I-4(15/2) (green: 510-590 nm) and F-4(9/2) - GT I-4(15/2) (red: 640-720 nm). AB - Spherical, submicronic TiO2 powder particles were prepared in the low temperature process of ultrasonic spray pyrolysis (150 degrees C) by using as a precursor aqueous colloidal solutions consisting of surface modified 45 angstrom TiO2 nanoparticles with dopamine. Due to the nanostructured nature, surface-modified assemblage of TiO2 nanoparticles preserved unique ability to absorb light through charge transfer complex by photoexcitation of the ligand-to-TiO2 band, conventionally associated with extremely small TiO2 nanoparticles (d LT 20 nm) whose surface Ti atoms, owing to the large curvature, have penta-coordinate geometry. abstract = "Spherical, submicronic TiO2 powder particles were prepared in the low temperature process of ultrasonic spray pyrolysis (150 degrees C) by using as a precursor aqueous colloidal solutions consisting of surface modified 45 angstrom TiO2 nanoparticles with dopamine. AB - Nanocrystalline up-converting Y2O3:Yb3+, Er3+ phosphor particles were processed in a dispersed system-aerosol, generated ultrasonically at 1.3 MHz from common nitrate precursor solution having fixed ytterbium-to-erbium concentration ratio. The appropriate process parameters: residence time 21 s, carrier gas (air) flow rate 1.6 dm(3)/min, synthesis temperature 900 degrees C, led to the formation of un-agglomerated spherical nanostructured secondary particles, having mean particle size of approx 450 nm, composed of primary nanoscaled (20 nm) subunits. In order to reach targeting phase crystallinity, the as-prepared particles were additionally annealed at 1100 degrees C in air for 12, 24 and 48 h, respectively. Emission spectra were assigned to the following trivalent erbium f-f electronic transitions: H-2(9/2) - GT I-4(15/2) (blue: 407-420 nm), (H-2(11/2), S-4(3/2)) - GT I-4(15/2) (green: 510-590 nm), and F-4(9/2) - GT I-4(15/2) (red: 640-720 nm). The significant improvement of the emission decay times were observed after thermal treatment and this effect is correlated further with the structural and morphological particles characteristics. For the annealing time of 12 h a quite high emission decay times were achieved (blue: 0.14 ms, green: 0.32 ms and red: 0.39 ms).

Conversion of the starting nitrates mixture into carbonate hydrate phase is performed with the help of ammonium hydrogen carbonate solution during hydrothermal treatment at 200 degrees C/3 h. Morphological architectures of rare earth oxides obtained after subsequent powders thermal treatment at 600 and 1100 degrees C for 3 and 12 h and their correlation with the optical characteristics are discussed based on X-ray powder diffractometry, field emission scanning electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy and photoluminescence measurements. Strong red and green emission followed by the superior decay times are attributed to the high powders purity and homogeneous dopants distribution over the host lattice matrix. (c) 2013 Elsevier B.V. Low temperature (150 oC) aerosol-assisted route (spray drying) is used for the generation of the un-agglomerated spherical particles with the mean size of 430 nm that are composited from much smaller crystalline sub-units. Detailed structural and morphological characterization of DA-TiO2 NPs and SPs were performed by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) analysis, scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM/TEM) and laser particle size (LPS) analysis. Particles surface structure and optical properties were followed using FT-IR and UV-Vis spectroscopy. Observed optical characteristics of both DA-TiO2 NPs and DA-TiO2 SPs expose narrowing of effective band gap for the same value of 1.3 eV implicating the preservation of colloidal nanoparticles characteristics in submicronic powders.

AB - It is highly desirable to induce significant red-shift in the optical absorption edges of TiO2 phases so that this class of low-cost and environmentally friendly materials can be used as effective optical absorbing materials in photovoltaic cells. This work focuses on studying the formation of charge transfer (CT) complex, between TiO2 surface and dopamine as surface modifier, that induced significant red-shift of optical absorption in comparison to unmodified TiO2 particles. For that purpose, the submicronic sized TiO2 particles were synthesized at 150 0C by means of ultrasonic spray pyrolysis route using two different approaches for powder processing differing on how the precursor solution was made. In the first one, the colloidal source solution of unmodified TiO2nanoparticles was used as precursor solution and the particles were additionally modified by dopamine after completing the synthesis procedure. In the second approach, the dopamine modification of source colloidal TiO2 nanoparticles preceded to powder processing. From Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) images it can be concluded that both groups of dopamine modified submicronic spheres have diameter of approximately 430 nm and contain small primary building units (Figure 1a and 1b). The surface structure and optical properties of resulting particles were analyzed using Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) and UV-Vis spectroscopy investigations. The FT-IR measurements show that dopamine successfully formed CT complex at TiO2 surface. Based on the significant red shift on diffusive reflectance spectra (Figure 1c) it was estimated the effective band-gap value for all observed samples as to be ~1.3 eV.

AB - Sub-micronic, spherical Y203:Yb/Er particles comprising clustered nano-units were prepared through ultrasonic spray pyrolysis of pure nitrate precursor solutions that contain different Yb/Er dopants ratio (10, 5 and 2). The particles obtained were additionally heat-treated at 1100°C for 12, 24 and 48 hours. Detailed structural and morphological analyses were done through X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM/TEM), specific surface area (BET), particle size distribution (LPS) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). Obtained results are further correlated with advanced powder optical properties confirmed by efficient up-conversion emissions of Er3+in: blue (407-420 nm, 2H9/2→4I15/2), green (510-590 nm, 2H11/2, 4S3/2→4I15/2) and red (640-720 nm, 4F9/2→4I15/2) spectra. The corresponding lifetimes in the function of temperature will be also presented and discussed.

AB - Polycrystalline fine powders of yttrium aluminate doped with Ce3+ were synthesised by spray pyrolysis of a polymeric precursor, which was obtained by dissolving the corresponding nitrates in a solution of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) in ethylene glycol (EG). Aerosol decomposition was performed at 550 °C followed by an additional thermal treatment (900–1100 °C). The yield of either a single yttrium aluminium perovskite (YAP) phase or a single yttrium aluminium garnet (YAG) phase was investigated as a function of the predefined yttrium/aluminium ratio, the cerium doping concentration, the processing temperature, and the thermal-treatment regime, which included the variation of the heating and cooling rates (dT/dt), the residence time (τ), and the atmosphere. Changes in the composition and structure of the precursor during thermal decomposition were investigated by thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis (TGA/DTA) and FTIR spectroscopy. The particle morphology and structure were analysed by a combination of scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS) and by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM). The structural refinement was based on the phase identification performed by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD). The emission spectra were recorded within the range 325–800 nm by applying excitation wavelengths of 297 (YAP) and 450 nm (YAG). The employed synthesis conditions assured the formation of spherical, non-agglomerated particles with well-developed surfaces and diameters between 200 and 800 nm. For a predefined Y/Al ratio of 1:1, lower processing temperatures combined with longer heat treatments under stationary conditions resulted in a multiphase system, composed of YAP, YAG, and monoclinic yttrium aluminate (YAM) phases. However, a short heat treatment with a high heating rate (200 °C/min) at higher temperatures results in the formation of a kinetically favoured pure YAP hexagonal phase. On the other hand, for a predefined Y/Al ratio of 3:5, the generation of a thermodynamically favoured pure YAG phase has been confirmed, regardless of the applied heat-treatment conditions. Although incomplete, Ce3+ introduction into the host matrix has been detected by XRPD and luminescence measurements.

AB - Fine yttrium oxide powders doped with Yb3+ and co-doped either with Tm3+ or Ho3+ were synthesized via spray pyrolysis at 900 °C using 0.1 M nitrate precursor. Synthesized powders were additionally thermally treated at 1100 °C for 24h. The characterization was done through X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and photoluminescent measurements (PL). Generation of cubic bixbyte-structure with space group Ia-3 is confirmed in all samples. Spherical particles with the mean size of ~ 380 nm generated through volume precipitation and collision of much smaller nano grains expose certain degree of porosity which increase further with the powder calcination. Powder’s optical characterization includes infrared, visible and ultraviolet spectra measurements as well as determination of the lifetime. The amplified emission intensities and enhanced lifetime in thermally treated samples are correlated with the powders morphological and structural changes.
