AB - Many articles in the literature deal with horseradish peroxidase (HRP) biomineralization, but none pay attention to the isoenzyme composition of commercial HRP or the influence of the carbohydrate component of the protein molecule on the biomineralization process. To study the impact of these factors, we performed periodate oxidation of commercial HRP and a purified HRP-C isoform for biomineralization within ZIF-8. With purified HRP, enzyme@ZIF-8 biocomposites with higher activity were obtained, while periodate oxidation of the carbohydrate component of both commercial HRP and purified HRP-C yields biocomposites with very high activity in acetate buffer that does not degrade the ZIF-8 structure. Using acetate instead of phosphate buffer can prevent the false high activity of HRP@ZIF-8 biocomposites caused by the degradation of ZIF-8 coating. At the same time, purification and especially oxidation of the carbohydrate component of enzymes prior to biomineralization lead to significantly improved activity of the biocomposites.

AB - As a renewable resource, starch is considered to be fully biodegradable and nonpolluting to the environment but the hygroscopicity of starch is the main disadvantage for wider applicability in the production of a polymer-based material. Hydrophobically modified starch prepared using natural-based plasticizers/modifiers in a first step ([-]-diisopropyl D-tartrate [DiPT], ricinoleic acid [RA] and epoxidized soybean oil [ESO]), and maleated polypropylene (MAPP) in a second step contributed to better compatibility, and thus reinforcing of composites. Tailored processing conditions, structural/morphological properties, hydrophobicity, and water-resistance of the modified starch were established. In addition, the Charpy impact and tensile strength of composites, based on poly(ethylene-co-acrylic acid) (EAA) and modified starches, were determined. Increased tensile strength and Young modulus of the composite using starch-modified with DiPT-MAPP, that is, 3 and 83%, respectively, indicated the possible applicability of obtained materials.

AB - Severe plastic deformation (SPD) is a popular group of techniques applied to achieve the nanostructuring of the metallic biomaterials and improvement of their mechanical characteristics. One of the most commonly used SPD methods is the high-pressure torsion (HPT) technique which enables the obtainment of the microstructure with small grains and high strength. In the present study, the influence of the plastic deformation and surface modification treatment on the tensile and corrosion properties of the Ti–13Nb–13Zr (wt%) alloy is investigated. In that purpose, the coarse-grained (CG) Ti–13Nb–13Zr (TNZ) alloy was subjected to the HPT processing by applying a pressure of 4.1 GPa with a rotational speed of 0.2 rpm and 5 revolutions at room temperature to obtain the ultrafine-grained (UFG) microstructure. The alloy microstructure before and after HPT processing was analysed using the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the X-ray diffraction (XRD). The homogeneity of the UFG TNZ alloy was determined by microhardness testing and microscopic observations. The nanotubular oxide layer on the surface of the TNZ alloy, both in CG and UFG condition, was formed by electrochemical anodization in 1 M H3PO4 + NaF electrolyte for 90 min. SEM analysis was used to characterise the morphology of the anodized surfaces, while energy dispersive spectroscopy was applied to determine the chemical composition of the nanostructured layers formed at the alloy surfaces. Mechanical properties of the TNZ alloy, before and after HPT processing and electrochemical anodization, were determined by tensile testing. After tensile testing, the fractographic analysis was conducted to identify the fracture mechanisms. The potentiodynamic polarization technique was used to determine the corrosion resistance of the alloy before and after plastic deformation and surface modification treatment. The obtained results showed that the alloy is reasonably homogeneous after the HPT processing. The XRD analyses reviled the presence of α′ and β phases in the CG TNZ alloy microstructure, while the additional ω phase was detected in the microstructure of the UFG TNZ alloy. The HPT obtained alloy exhibits higher hardness and improved tensile properties than the alloy in the as-received CG condition, while the electrochemical anodization leads to a decrease of its mechanical properties. Both CG and UFG alloys show excellent corrosion stability in Ringer’s solution. Moreover, electrochemical anodization leads to a decrease or an increase of the corrosion resistance of these materials, depending on the morphology of the formed nanotubular surface layers. The results indicate that the anodized CG TNZ alloy is characterized by a lower modulus of elasticity and better corrosion resistance properties than the anodized UFG TNZ alloy. AB - Cavitation erosion of hybrid acrylate composite films with polyhedraloligosilsesquioxanes (POSS) was investigated in this study. The hybrid films aremade with 1, 3 and 5 wt% of POSS reagents containing: (a) hydroxyl (POSS-M),(b) both hydroxyl and allyl (POSS-M-A) and (c) methacryloyl groups (POSS-MCl).Addition of 5 wt% POSS-M-A caused the highest microhardness increase for49.8%, in comparison to the pure matrix material. Cavitation resistance of hybridfilms, estimated as the time-dependent mass loss, was improved by POSS addition.POSS-M-A addition (5 wt%) contributed to 94% lower mass loss comparingto pure Bis-GMA/TEGDMA film. Scanning electron (SEM) and atomic forcemicroscopy (AFM) showed the lowest surface roughness obtained for compositewith POSS-M-A. The improved hardness and wear resistance of the compositefilms indicated that POSS-M-A filler enhanced interfacial adhesion and reinforcingof the Bis-GMA/TEGDMA matrix.

AB - The controllable synthesis of rutile TiO2 single crystal particles with the preferential orientation of {111} facets still remains a scientific and technological challenge. Here, we developed a facile route for fabrication of rutile TiO2 nanorod crystals (RTiO2NRs) having high ratios of oxidative {111} to reductive {110} surfaces. RTiO2NRs were synthesized using a peroxo-titanium complex (PTC) approach, which was controlled by changing the Ti/H2O2 ratio. The thus obtained RTiO2NRs revealed a high tendency to agglomerate through orientation-dependent attachment along the {110} facets. This resulted in an increased {111}/{110} surface ratio and led to a markedly improved photocatalytic activity of RTiO2NR aggregates. The reported findings illustrate the rich potential of the herein proposed facile and energy-efficient synthesis of nanostructured rutile TiO2-based photocatalysts.

AB - Due to their excellent mechanical properties and corrosion resistance, titanium-based materials are widely represented in aeronautics, chemical industry and medicine, where they are considered the best replacement for damaged hard tissues. In order to obtain optimal properties for medical applications, commercially pure titanium (cpTi) is often alloyed. The ß-type titanium alloys containing Nb, Zr, Ta, Mo, Sn have attracted considerable attention, due to their unique combinations of high strength, low modulus of elasticity, superior corrosion resistance and biocompatibility. Also, titanium-based materials can be processed by surface modifications, including the anodization, which belongs to the group of chemical nanostructured surface modifications. Analysis of microstructure of two-phase Ti-13Nb-13Zr (TNZ) alloy was done by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Characterisation of surface, obtained by anodization in the H3PO4 + NaF solution, during 90 minutes process, was performed by SEM. Micro Tensile Specimens (MTS) were cut from TNZ and anodized TNZ disks and were subjected to the tensile test using servo-hydraulic testing machine Instron 1255. Stereometric measurement of strain at the surface of the MTS during tension was done using the Aramis system. Results showed that anodization process led to a creation of heterogeneous layer of nanotubes. Anodized TNZ alloy had lower elastic modulus and tensile strength comparing to the initial alloy. In order to better understand tensile behaviour, numerical analysis of non-anodized alloy was done. The 3D numerical model of MTS, which simulated the tensile test, was made in Abaqus software package. Good correlation between experimental and numerical results was obtained. © 2020 The Authors. AB - Potential non-toxic pink and red ceramic pigments based on CeO2 were successfully synthesized by self-propagating room temperature method and thermally treated at 600, 900 and 1200 °C for 15 min. The structure, morphology and optical properties, as well as thermal stability of Ce1-xErxO2-δ and Ce1-xPrxO2-δ (x = 0.05) were examined. Single-phase composition of all obtained CeO2 pigments was confirmed using XRPD method and Raman spectroscopy and it was not dependent on temperature. The mechanism of structural behaviour was thoroughly examined using Raman and FTIR spectroscopy. Nanometric dimensions of the crystallites of all pigments were confirmed using XRPD, TEM and FE-SEM analysis. Colour properties were dependent on the temperature treatment, and their position in the chromaticity diagram was studied using UV/VIS spectrophotometry. Colour efficiency measurements were supplemented by colorimetric analysis. It is proved that all samples are thermally stable in the investigated temperature range (up to 1200 °C), and their potential application as environmentally friendly pigments of desired colour is confirmed.

AB - Highly ordered, anodically grown TiO 2 nanotubes on titanium supports were annealed in ammonia atmosphere in order to incorporate nitrogen doping (≤2 at.%) in the titanium oxide lattice. FESEM micrographs revealed nanotubes with an average outer diameter of 101.5 ± 1.5 nm and an average wall thickness of about 13 nm. Anatase crystals were formed inside the tubes after annealing in ammonia atmosphere for 30 min. With further annealing, rutile peaks appeared due to the thermal oxidation of the foil and rise as the duration of heat treatment was increased. The concentration and chemical nature of nitrogen in the nanotube arrays can be correlated to the optical response of dry-pressed heterojunctions of doped TiO 2 /CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 single crystals. The N-TiO 2 /perovskite heterojunction with the highest amount of interstitial nitrogen exhibited an improved photocurrent, indicating the importance of the semiconductor doping-based heterojunction optimization strategies to deliver competitive levels of halide perovskite-based optoelectronic devices to be envisioned for urban infrastructures. © 2019

AB - Nanosphere lithography is an effective technique for high throughput fabrication of well-ordered patterns on large areas. This study reports on nanostructuring of silicon samples by means of Ag ions implantation through self-organized polystyrene (PS) masks. The PS nanospheres with a diameter of ∼150 nm were self-assembled in a hexagonal array on top of Si(100) wafers, and then used as a mask for subsequent 60 keV silver ion implantation. Different fluences were applied up to 2 × 1016 ions/cm2 in order to create a distribution of different sizes and densities of buried metal nanoparticles. The surface morphology and the subsurface structures were studied by scanning electron microscopy and cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy, as a function of the mask deformation upon irradiation and the implantation parameters itself. We demonstrate that Ag is implanted into Si only through the mask openings, thus forming a regular array of amorphized regions over the wide area of silicon substrate. These fragments are of similar dimensions of the spheres with widths of about 190 nm and distributed over 60 nm in depth due to the given ion range. At the subsurface region of the implanted fragments, the synthesis of small sized and optically active Ag nanoparticles is clearly observed. The samples show a strong absorption peak in the long-wavelength region from 689 to 745 nm characteristic for surface plasmon resonance excitations, which could be fitted well using the Maxwell-Garnett`s theory. © 2018 Elsevier B.V.

AB - A facile synthesis was employed for three polyhedral oligo silsequioxanes (POSS), obtaining incompletely condensed structures with fern-like and cubic morphologies. Proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H NMR) indicated the successful synthesis of the proposed POSS structures. The hydroxyl groups affected the manner and type of POSS morphology, as seen under a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and a transmission electron microscope (TEM). Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) showed the availability of surface hydroxyl groups that contributed to the formation of a higher amount of char residue, as found from TGA analysis. The highest decomposition temperature (281 °C) and the least char residue were found for a cross-linkable POSS, obtained by esterification of the hydroxyl groups with methacryloyl chloride. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd

AB - To contribute to the knowledge on the influence of synthesis procedure on the intercalation kinetics of lithium ions into phospho-olivines, LiFePO4/C composite samples (LFPC) were synthesized in two ways, the first one in a sol-gel procedure (SG), and the other in a solid-state reaction (SS). The X-ray diffractograms (XRD) of both samples overlapped with that of pure LiFePO4, taken from the crystallographic database. Scanning electron microscopy pictures indicated the high degree of interparticle sintering, which caused a considerable agglomerate growth. The results of potentiodynamic measurements in aqueous LiNO3 solution revealed that for SS sample, three times higher initial capacity from that of SG one, (amounting to 74 mAh g−1 at 5 mV s−1). However, capacity fade on rising scan rate is much more expressed for SS sample than for SG one. We suggest that a different degree of material utilization due to the incomplete coverage of olivine particles by carbon explains this difference. The technique of separation of diffusion and capacitance currents was applied in a kinetic analysis, but it was shown to be inappropriate. We suggest the inapplicability of classic CV theory to the intercalation system accompanied by phase transition. Instead, a model of ohmic resistance determination of process kinetics was considered. LFPC-SS sample delivers three times larger capacity in LiNO3, amounting to 74 mAh g−1 at 1 mV s−1.

AB - On the surface of the ultrafine-grained Ti–13Nb–13Zr alloy and the coarse-grained Ti–13Nb–13Zr alloy nanotubular oxide layers were formed by electrochemical anodization in the 1 M H3PO4 + NaF electrolyte in order to evaluate the electrochemical behaviour in the artificial saliva. SEM images showed that homogeneous nanotubular oxide layers could be formed by anodic oxidation of titanium alloys in an electrolyte with fluoride ions. These two titanium alloys, like other materials developed to replace the bone tissue in the human body, have to be highly corrosion resistant, which is one of the most common requirement in terms of the biocompatibility, damage and fracture prevention. The alloys were analysed by means of the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and potentiodynamic polarization. The analyzed alloys had good corrosion stability, while nanotubular oxide layer improved their corrosion resistance. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd

AB - In order to optimize and enhance the implant material properties, metallic materials may be modified by severe plastic deformation (SPD) procedures. One of the most attracting SPD methods is high-pressure torsion (HPT), which is method where deformation is obtained mainly by simple shear. In the present study ultrafine-grained titanium (UFG cpTi) and ultrafine-grained Ti-13Nb-13Zr (UFG TNZ) alloy were obtained by high pressure torsion (HPT) under a pressure of 4.1 GPa with a rotational speed of 0.2 rpm up to 5 rotations at room temperature. In order to analyse microstructure of materials before and after HPT process, scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used. The aim of this study was to determine the corrosion resistance of titanium and its alloy after HPT process. Electrochemical measurements were performed in artificial saliva with a pH value of 5.5 at 37 degrees C, in order to simulate the oral environment. The materials were analysed by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization. All examined materials showed good corrosion resistance, but results indicate that HPT process can improves corrosion resistance.

AB - A novel adsorbents, 6-arm amino polyethylene glycol functionalized multiwall carbon nanotubes (PEG/MWCNT) loaded with alpha-FeOOH (Fe/PEG/MWCNT), and hybrid alpha-FeOOH/alpha-MnO2 nano-deposit (Fe-Mn/PEG/MWCNT) were used for As(V) removal. In a batch test, the influence of pH, contact time, initial ion concentration and temperature on adsorption efficiency was studied. Time-dependent adsorption was best described by pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Weber-Morris model which predicted intra-particle diffusion as a rate controlling step of overall process. Competitive kinetic study in the presence of interfering ions shows low detrimental effect on both capacity and kinetic of As(V) removal. Thermodynamic parameters showed that the adsorption was spontaneous and endothermic processes. Influences of the pH, iron oxide loading and interfering ions were modeled by using Visual MINTEQ software. High adsorption capacities: 49.39 and 59.78 mg g(-1) were obtained for Fe/- and Fe-Mn/PEG/MWCNT, respectively, and multi-cycle reusability indicated high applicability of obtained material. Two step removal process, in a batch study, was successfully performed by using PEG/MWCNT for cations removal in the first step, and Fe or Fe-Mn/PEG/MWCNT for As(V) removal in the second. AB - A process of obtaining N-doped TiO2 nanotubes sensitized by CdS nanoparticles is presented, including detailed characterizations performed along the synthesis. Transparent TiO2 films consisting of nanotubes, 2.5 mu m long and of similar to 60 nm inner diameter, were obtained after anodization of a titanium film deposited onto FTO glass substrate. N-doping was achieved by annealing of TiO2 film in ammonia. X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy measurements showed that nitrogen was substitutionally incorporated in the TiO2 matrix, with the N:Ti concentration ratio of 1:100. The doping changed the optical properties of the material in such a way that the absorption edge was shifted from 380 nm to 507 nm, as observed from diffuse reflectance spectra. The influence of the microwave (MW) irradiation on the synthesized CdS quantum dots and their optical properties was investigated. It was shown that the diameter of CdS nanoparticles was increased due to releasing of S-2-ions from dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as a consequence of the MW treatment. The (N)TiO2 films were then used as substrates for matrix assisted pulsed laser deposition of the CdS quantum dots with DMSO as a matrix. The laser parameters for the deposition were optimized in order to preserve the nanotubular structure open, the latter being an important feature of this type of photoanode. The structure obtained under optimized conditions has an additional absorption edge shift, reaching 603 nm.

AB - Commercially pure titanium (cpTi) and titanium alloys are the most commonly used metallic biomaterials. Biomedical requirements for the successful usage of metallic implant materials include their high mechanical strength, low elastic modulus, excellent biocompatibility and high corrosion resistance. It is evident that the response of a biomaterial implanted into the human body depends entirely on its biocompatibility and surface properties. Therefore, in order to improve the performance of biomaterials in biological systems modification of their surface is necessary. One of most commonly used method of implant materials surface modification is electrochemical anodization and this method is reviewed in the present work. Aim of the presented review article is to explain the electrochemical anodization process and the way in which the nanotubes are formed by anodization on the metallic material surface. Influence of anodizing parameters on the nanotubes characteristics, such as nanotube diameter, length and nanotubular layer thickness, are described, as well as the anodized nanotubes influence on the material surface properties, corrosion resistance and biocompatibility.

AB - Visible-light active mesoporous N,S-doped and co-doped anatase TiO2 powders were synthesized by non-hydrolytic sol-gel route, starting from TiCl4 and Ti((OPr)-Pr-i)(4) dissolved in cyclohexane or dimethyl sulfoxide, later used as a S-doping agent. After drying in an inert atmosphere, the gels were annealed at 500 degrees C for 3 h, in air or ammonia flow, later used for N-doping. The undoped titania powder, obtained by annealing in air of the cyclohexane-based gel, was also annealed in ammonia to deduce which method is more efficient for N-doping: gel or powder annealing. The post-annealing in air after annealing in ammonia was optimized to attain the best photocatalytic activity for dye degradation under simulated visible light. The size of anatase nanocrystals decreased by doping and the specific surface area of the powders increased. The XPS analysis confirmed a successful substitution of Ti4+ by S(4+) and/or S(6+), which caused a very small band-gap narrowing. The gel annealing in ammonia was much more efficient for interstitial nitrogen incorporation in TiO2 lattice than the powder annealing. The annealing in ammonia of the gel synthesized with dimethyl sulfoxide provided the highest visible-light activity owing to high specific surface area, appropriate mesoporosity and high photoabsorption due to efficient N,S co-doping. AB - Having in mind that anodic oxidation method can be used for tailoring desired structure and morphology of TiO2, herein the synthesis of self-ordered TiO2 nanotubes via electrochemical anodization of high purity Ti foil is reported. The influence of synthesis parameters such as oxidative voltage, different electrolyte, annealing temperature and annealing atmosphere were explored and correlate with obtained TiO2 nanotube arrays. The results show that applied potential is the main factor that controls the diameter of the nanotubes, while annealing temperature influence on crystal type and morphology is related to different contents of electrolyte. Investigated method gives opportunity to enhanced performance of TiO2 nanotubes, providing many applications in different field.

AB - Ordered titania nanotubes (pore diameter approximate to 90 nm and wall thickness approximate to 10 nm) were obtained by the anodization technique and used for the ex-situ deposition of cadmium sulfide quantum dots (CdS QDs) via simple immersion of titania substrates in the CdS colloid. The colloidal dispersion of CdS nanoparticles in water was obtained in the presence of the bifunctional ligand, mercapto silane, which binds to the surface of CdS providing stability to the colloid and preventing further growth of the synthesized nanoparticles. The blue-shift of the optical absorption indicated that the CdS nanoparticles were of quantum dot size. Using the effective mass model, the average particle size was calculated to be 5.4 nm. Transmission electron microscopy provided the verification for the estimated size of the nanoparticles, which was followed by performing selected area electron diffraction to determine the mixed phase (cubic and hexagonal) of the synthesized CdS QDs. Scanning electron microscopy and reflectance spectroscopy were employed to characterize the nanostructures consisting of TiO2 nanotubes with different loadings of CdS QDs (after 24 h and 72 h immersion). It was demonstrated that mercapto silane efficiently binds CdS QDs onto TiO2 nanotubes enabling Visible-light response of the obtained nanocomposites. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. AB - An efficient adsorbents for arsenate removal was developed by modification of calcined eggshell with goethite (calcined eggshell/goethite; sorbent 1), alpha-MnO2 (calcined eggshell/alpha-MnO2; sorbent 2) and hybride system goethite/alpha-MnO2 (calcined eggshell/goethite/alpha-MnO2; sorbent 3). Methods and processes for preparation of novel adsorbents were defined and obtained materials were characterized by BET, XRD, SEM and FTIR analysis. The influence of functionalization methods, solution pH, contact time, temperature, interfering ions and initial arsenate concentration on efficiencies of arsenate adsorption were studied in a batch system. Based on the orthogonal distance regression (ODR) fitting, using R-2, MARE and RMSRE statistical criteria, Langmuir and Sips equations were chosen for description of adsorption equilibriums on sorbents 1 and 3, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacities of 33.38 mg g(-1), 13.54 mg g(-1) and 47.04 mg g(-1) for sorbents 1-3, respectively, were obtained. Time-dependent study revealed that pseudo-second-order equation fitted well the kinetic data, while the Weber Morison model predicted intra-particle diffusion as main adsorption rate controlling step. Thermodynamic parameters indicated exothermic, feasible and spontaneous nature of adsorption process on sorbents I and 3. Results of Visual MINTEQ equilibrium speciation modeling program was used for studying pH, ionic strength and interfering ions influences on arsenate adsorption. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. AB - A highly porous calcium carbonate (calcite; sorbent 1) was used as a support for modification with alpha-FeOOH (calcite/goethite; sorbent 2), alpha-MnO2 (calcite/alpha-MnO2; sorbent 3) and alpha-FeOOH/alpha-MnO2 (calcite/goethite/alpha-MnO2; sorbent 4) in order to obtain a cheap hybrid materials for simple and effective arsenate removal from aqueous solutions. The adsorption ability of synthesized adsorbents was studied as a function of functionalization methods, pH, contact time, temperature and ultrasonic treatment. Comparison of the adsorptive effectiveness of synthesized adsorbents for arsenate removal, under ultrasound treatment and classical stirring method, has shown better performance of the former one reaching maximum adsorption capacities of 1.73, 21.00, 10.36 and 41.94 mg g(-1), for sorbents 1-4, respectively. Visual MINTEQ equilibrium speciation modeling was used for prediction of pH and interfering ion influences on arsenate adsorption. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - The photocatalytic degradation of the synthetic textile dye CI Basic Yellow 28 (BY28) in water, using a recently synthesized P160 TiO2-based catalyst, under Osram ultra-vitalux (R) lamp (300 W) light, was studied. The effects of the operational parameters, such as initial concentration of catalyst, initial dye concentration and pH, were studied. The salt effect (NaCl, Na2CO3, Na2SO4 and NaNO3) was also investigated. It was found that the optimal concentration of catalyst is 2.0 g L-1. A pseudo first-order kinetic model was illustrated using the Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism and the adsorption equilibrium constant and the rate constant of the surface reaction were calculated (K-By = 6.126 L mg(-1) and k(C) = 0.272 mg L-1 min(-1), respectively). The photodegradation rate was higher in weak acidic than in high acidic and alkaline conditions. The presence of CO32- ions increased the photodegradation rate while Cl-, SO42- and NO3- decreased the reaction rate. The rate of photodegradation of BY28 was measured using UV-Vis spectroscopy.
