AB  - The human health risks of cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), and nickel (Ni) in fifty regular and slim cigarette brands available in the Serbian market were evaluated. Distributions on per-cigarette basis concentrations of these metals, as determined by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry, were used as inputs in the probabilistic risk assessment. The contents of these metals in cigarettes varied significantly. Larger quantities of the studied metals were observed in regular cigarettes than in slim cigarettes, but the concentration levels per cigarette tobacco mass were higher in slim cigarettes. The metal concentrations in counterfeit cigarettes were marginally higher than those in authentic brands. Based on the mean concentrations, Pb was the most abundant toxic metal, followed by Ni and Cd. The calculated values of the cumulative hazard index (HI) and incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) indicated a low noncarcinogenic risk and low but not negligible carcinogenic risk from Cd, Pb, and Ni. The mean HI and ILCR values obtained using probabilistic and deterministic approaches were similar. A Monte Carlo simulation was employed to minimize the uncertainty of health risk estimation. The sensitivity analysis revealed that the most influential factor was cigarette mass followed by Cd content.

AB  - The toxicity of hybrid nanoparticles, consisting of non-toxic components, zirconium dioxide nanoparticles (ZrO2 NPs), and caffeic acid (CA), was examined against four different cell lines (HTR-8 SV/Neo, JEG-3, JAR, and HeLa). Stable aqueous ZrO2 sol, synthesized by forced hydrolysis, consists of 3–4 nm in size primary particles organized in 30–60 nm in size snowflake-like particles, as determined by transmission electron microscopy and direct light scattering measurements. The surface modification of ZrO2 NPs with CA leads to the formation of an interfacial charge transfer (ICT) complex followed by the appearance of absorption in the visible spectral range. The spectroscopic observations are complemented with the density functional theory calculations using a cluster model. The ZrO2 NPs and CA are non-toxic against four different cell lines in investigated concentration range. Also, ZrO2 NPs promote the proliferation of HTR-8 SV/Neo, JAR, and HeLa cells. On the other hand, hybrid ZrO2/CA NPs induced a significant reduction of the viability of the JEG-3 cells (39 %) for the high concentration of components (1.6 mM ZrO2 and 0.4 mM CA).

AB  - The presented study describes macroporous crosslinked poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) [PGME] functionalized with diethylenetriamine [PGME-deta] as a potential recovery agent for Mo(VI) oxyanions from aqueous solutions. Sorption studies were carried out by varying experimental conditions (pH, time, concentration, temperature). Kinetics of Mo(VI) sorption was investigated in batch (static) experiments, in the temperature range 298–343 K. Sorption dynamics data were fitted to seven chemical-reaction and particle-diffusion models. The kinetics studies showed that Mo(VI) sorption adhered to the pseudo-second-order model under all investigated operating conditions. The sorption kinetics was determined to be governed by both the intraparticle diffusion and the external film diffusion to a lesser extent. The temperature rise promotes the molybdate species removal, with the maximum experimental uptake capacity of 4.02 mmol g− 1 at 298 K, at the selected pH which is consistent with the predominance range of hydrolized polynuclear Mo(VI) forms and optimum electrostatic attraction.

AB  - As soil cadmium (Cd) contamination becomes a serious concern and one of the significant environmental pollution issues all over the world, knowledge of the basic chemistry, origin, inputs, sources, quantity, chemical forms, reactions, as well as the fate and transport of Cd in different types of soil is crucial for better understanding Cd bioavailability, health risks and remedial options. This study aimed to increase the current knowledge on the complex interdependence between the factors affecting behavior, transport and fate of Cd in the soil and to test and compare the performance of the stabilization agents in different soil types. Soils demonstrated various sorption affinity and capacity for Cd accumulation, which proved to be positively correlated with soil pH and the cation exchange capacity (CEC). With increasing levels of contamination, sequential extraction analysis showed the highest increase of relative Cd amounts in the exchangeable fraction regardless of the soil properties, suggesting that added Cd is principally associated with the easily accessible and mobile fraction. For different initial Cd concentrations and soil types, Cd sorption reached the quasi-equilibrium within 24 h of contact. Prolonged aging (two months) influenced the natural stabilization of Cd in all types of soil, but only at low contamination level. The application of both, conventional (slaked lime Ca(OH) 2 ) and alternative phosphate-rich (annealed bovine bones B 400 ) amendments, resulted in Cd relocation and reduction of exchangeable Cd content. Although the effect was smaller when apatite amendment was utilized, observed re-distribution of Cd to more stable soil fractions is preferable for achieving long-term stabilization. Cd concentrations extracted in exchangeable and acid soluble fractions after the treatments of contaminated soil samples suggest that the practical applicability of in situ immobilization depends on the soil properties and the level of contamination, as well as that effect, should be monitored for the possible re-mobilization of Cd. © 2019 Elsevier Inc.

AB  - The objective of the present study was to determine the impact of cadmium (Cd) concentration in the soil on its uptake by tobacco plants, and to compare the ability of diverse extraction procedures for determining Cd bioavailability and predicting soil-to-plant transfer and Cd plant concentrations. The pseudo-total digestion procedure, modified Tessier sequential extraction and six standard single-extraction tests for estimation of metal mobility and bioavailability were used for the leaching of Cd from a native soil, as well as samples artificially contaminated over a wide range of Cd concentrations. The results of various leaching tests were compared between each other, as well as with the amounts of Cd taken up by tobacco plants in pot experiments. In the native soil sample, most of the Cd was found in fractions not readily available under natural conditions, but with increasing pollution level, Cd amounts in readily available forms increased. With increasing concentrations of Cd in the soil, the quantity of pollutant taken up in tobacco also increased, while the transfer factor (TF) decreased. Linear and non-linear empirical models were developed for predicting the uptake of Cd by tobacco plants based on the results of selected leaching tests. The non-linear equations for ISO 14870 (diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid extraction - DTPA), ISO/TS 21268-2 (CaCl2 leaching procedure), US EPA 1311 (toxicity characteristic leaching procedure - TCLP) single step extractions, and the sum of the first two fractions of the sequential extraction, exhibited the best correlation with the experimentally determined concentrations of Cd in plants over the entire range of pollutant concentrations. This approach can improve and facilitate the assessment of human exposure to Cd by tobacco smoking, but may also have wider applicability in predicting soil-to-plant transfer.

abstract = "The objective of the present study was to determine the impact of cadmium (Cd) concentration in the soil on its uptake by tobacco plants, and to compare the ability of diverse extraction procedures for determining Cd bioavailability and predicting soil-to-plant transfer and Cd plant concentrations. The pseudo-total digestion procedure, modified Tessier sequential extraction and six standard single-extraction tests for estimation of metal mobility and bioavailability were used for the leaching of Cd from a native soil, as well as samples artificially contaminated over a wide range of Cd concentrations. The results of various leaching tests were compared between each other, as well as with the amounts of Cd taken up by tobacco plants in pot experiments. In the native soil sample, most of the Cd was found in fractions not readily available under natural conditions, but with increasing pollution level, Cd amounts in readily available forms increased. With increasing concentrations of Cd in the soil, the quantity of pollutant taken up in tobacco also increased, while the transfer factor (TF) decreased. Linear and non-linear empirical models were developed for predicting the uptake of Cd by tobacco plants based on the results of selected leaching tests. AB  - Antimicrobial performance of silver nanoparticles supported by functionalized hydroxyapatite with 5-aminosalycile acid was tested against Gram-negative bacteria E. coli, Gram-positive bacteria S. aureus and yeast C. albicans. Thorough characterization of materials (electron microscopy, nitrogen adsorption desorption isotherms, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy) followed each step during the course of nanocomposite preparation. Synthesized powder consists of rod-like hydroxyapatite particles (40-60 x 10-20 nm, length x diameter) decorated with nano-sized spherical silver particles whose content in nanocomposite was found to be 1.9 wt.-%. Concentration- and time-dependent bacterial reduction data indicated that use of silver nanoparticles even at concentration as low as 1 mu g mL(-1) lead to complete reduction of both bacteria (E. coli and S. aureus). On the other hand, non-toxic behavior of nanocomposite in broad concentration range (0.05-2.0 mg mL(-1)) was found towards C albicans. Kinetics of Cr(VI) sorption was investigated in the temperature range 298-343 K and the results were fitted to chemical reaction and particle diffusion models. The Cr(VI) sorption obeys the pseudo-second-order model with definite influence of pore diffusion. A temperature rise promotes chromium removal, with a maximum experimental uptake capacity of 4.21 mmol g(-1) at 343 K for the sample with the highest amino group concentration. Equilibrium data were analysed with Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin adsorption isotherm models. Thermodynamic parameters, i.e. Gibbs free energy (G(0)), enthalpy (H-0) and entropy change (S-0) and activation energy of sorption (E-a), were calculated. The Cr(VI) adsorption onto PGME-HD was found to be spontaneous and endothermic, with increased randomness in the system. Desorption experiments show that chromium anion sorption was reversible and the PGME-HD sample GMA 60 HD was easily regenerated with 0.1 mol L-1 NaOH up to 90% recovery in the fourth sorption/desorption cycle. AB  - The kinetic and equilibrium sorption data of Co(II) ions were obtained from batch sorption experiments, using soils samples with a wide range of texture, carbonate and organic content. Sequential extraction protocol was applied to evaluate Co(II) interactions with soil fractions. The parameters, obtained from kinetic and isotherm data modeling, as well as the results of Co(II) distribution and desorption studies, were correlated with soil properties. Kinetics of Co(II) sorption was fast and obeyed the pseudo-second order kinetic model at the contact time ranged from 30 min to 30 days, using Co(II) concentration of 1.5 x 10(-3) mol L-1. Maximum sorption capacities were highly correlated with soil pH. The sorbed Co(II) was associated with Fe,Mn-oxide and carbonate phase of calcareous soil, whereas in other soil types ion-exchangeable fraction was dominant. The effect of aging on Co (II) stabilization in soil was more pronounced for lower contamination levels and soils with higher pH. For non calcareous soils, the desorption of Co(II) could be achieved by EDTA and HCI solutions. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB  - Mimicking the extraordinary performances of natural materials presents an attractive, but challenging approach in the synthesis of advanced functional materials. In the field of separation techniques, the design of a low-cost, regenerative, environmentally friendly sorbent and the utilization of most of its active centers to remove the targeted pollutant are everyday challenges. The combination of casein and poly(sodium methacrylate) (PMANa) in the form of a soft polymer network is proposed as a promising sorbent for the removal of Ni2+ from wastewater. Such a combination and an applied synthetic route form hybrid materials with better sorption properties than both their components alone. SEM and TEM show that caseinate micelles are dissociated and the more exposed protein structure is stabilized by the PMANa network and able to form various stable complexes. The achieved sorption capacity (224 mg g(-1)) is among the highest reported in the literature. The very high removal efficiency in the wide range of the initial Ni2+ concentrations (0.05-200 ppm) and easy and complete regeneration without decrease in sorption capacities make these low-cost materials highly sensitive sorbents attractive for use under real conditions where it is necessary to avoid environmental risks and provide the recovery and reuse of the metal.

AB  - The distribution of elements in soil fractions affects their mobility and availability and thus their potential beneficial or harmful impact on ecosystems, biota and humans. Different mineralogical and chemical characteristics of soil influence elemental distribution. In the present study, chemical speciation of macro and micro elements (Al, Fe, Mn, K, Cd, Cr, Cu, Li, Ba, Ni, Pb and Zn) in unpolluted soils of different types, collected from the territory of the Republic of Serbia, were analysed by sequential extraction procedure. The impact of the physicochemical soil properties on the content, distribution, mobility and availability of elements was investigated. Principal component analysis was employed for the evaluation and characterization of the experimental data, understanding of the relationships between soil properties and the distribution, affiliation and connection of the elements. Finally, an artificial neural network (ANN) model was developed to explore the applicability of this approach for the prediction of the elemental distribution based on soil properties. Good agreement between the model and the experimental results implied that the ANN could be considered as a useful tool for control and prediction purposes. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. abstract = "The distribution of elements in soil fractions affects their mobility and availability and thus their potential beneficial or harmful impact on ecosystems, biota and humans. Different mineralogical and chemical characteristics of soil influence elemental distribution. In the present study, chemical speciation of macro and micro elements (Al, Fe, Mn, K, Cd, Cr, Cu, Li, Ba, Ni, Pb and Zn) in unpolluted soils of different types, collected from the territory of the Republic of Serbia, were analysed by sequential extraction procedure. The impact of the physicochemical soil properties on the content, distribution, mobility and availability of elements was investigated. Principal component analysis was employed for the evaluation and characterization of the experimental data, understanding of the relationships between soil properties and the distribution, affiliation and connection of the elements. Finally, an artificial neural network (ANN) model was developed to explore the applicability of this approach for the prediction of the elemental distribution based on soil properties. Good agreement between the model and the experimental results implied that the ANN could be considered as a useful tool for control and prediction purposes. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. AB  - Natural minerals, such as quartz, clinoptilolite and calcite, are useful as sorbents for various applications, but their content of heavy metals ions is the most problematic obstacle to their application. Before their (re)use, the minerals must be purified. In this work, the subject was desorption of lead from a natural multi-component mineral sample consisting of a mixture of silicates (mainly quartz and clinoptilolite) and calcite formations. Besides deionized water, different extraction solutions were tested: NaCl, KCl, CaCl2, MgCl2, HCl, HNO3, EDTA, EDTA/HCl, EDTA/NaOAc-HOAc, HOAc, NaOAc and NaOAc-HOAc. Several parameters were varied in order to obtain the optimal conditions for the desorption process: the concentration of the extraction solution, the ratio of the mass of the sample and volume of the extractant, and the pH value of the suspension. The best purification effect in one desorption cycle was obtained when 0.1 M EDTA, at a pH value of 3.5 (0.2 M EDTA was mixed with 0.01 M acetic buffer, at pH value 3.0, in ratio 1:1) was applied. Sequential extraction (5 consecutive iterations) was performed to provide a more efficient purification process. The lead content (58.20 mg/kg) was decreased by: 20% (using HOAc), 21% (using EDTA) and by more than 50% (using EDTA/NaOAc-HOAc). The pH value and conductivity were measured at all critical points to clarify the mechanism of the desorption process. The formation of Pb-EDTA complex is the result of two parallel phenomena, complexing and ion-exchange. An enhanced adsorption capacity and an improved microelement profile for the purified samples were also attained. The mineralogical and radiochemical performances of the sample were determined by the X-ray diffraction and gamma spectrometry techniques. Microelement analyses of the native and purified samples were performed by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB  - Silver doped fluorapatite nanopowders were synthesised by neutralization method, which consists of dissolving Ag2O in solution of HF and H3PO4 and addition to suspension of Ca(OH)(2). The powder XRD, SEM and FTIR studies indicated the formation of a fluorapatite nanomaterials with average length of the particles is about 80 nm and a width of about 15 nm. The FUR studies show that carbonate content in samples is very small and carbonte ions substitute both phosphate and hydroxyl groups in the crystal structure of samples, forming AB-type fluorapatite. Antibacterial studies have demonstrated that all Ag+-doped fluorapatite samples exhibit bactericidal effect against pathogens: Staphylococcus aureus, Micrococcus luteus and Kllebsiela pneumoniae. Antibacterial activity increased with the increase of Ag+ in the samples. The atomic force microscopy studies revealed extensive damage to the bacterial cell envelops in the presence of AW-doped fluorapatite particles which may lead to their death. The synthesized Ag+-doped fluorapatite nanomaterials are promising as antibacterial biomaterials in orthopedics and dentistry. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB  - Polyethersulfone membranes with integrated negatively-charged hydrogel of crosslinked poly(acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid) were prepared by a combination of a liquid phase inversion process with photopolymerization and crosslinking of functional monomers included in the casting solution. A designed experiment was conducted to select the optimal composition for preparing membranes with a sufficient degree of swelling and ion exchange capacity. Scanning electron microscopy images revealed an ultrafine hybrid structure with an interconnected network of submicron particles embedded within the microporous polyethersulfone support. An intramembrane diffusion model was used to describe kinetics of heavy metal sorption by these hydrogels and the calculated apparent diffusion coefficients were 2–3 times larger than in commercial ion-exchange resins. Equilibrium sorption of heavy metals was described using a semi-empirical Langmuir model.

Permeation of toluidine blue solutions through non-functionalized membranes showed a dramatic effect of 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid concentration in the casting solution on the dynamic adsorption performance. The epoxide groups present in glycidyl methacrylate copolymer were transformed into amine functionalities by ring opening under alkaline conditions. Permeation of dilute Cu2+ solutions through functionalized membranes demonstrated that the plate height for some of these membranes was an order of magnitude smaller than for commercial particle-filled membranes used in solid phase extraction. AB  - Polyethersulfone membranes with integrated negatively-charged hydrogel of crosslinked poly (acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid) were prepared by a combination of a liquid phase inversion process with photopolymerization and crosslinking of functional monomers included in the casting solution. A designed experiment was conducted to select the optimal composition for preparing membranes with a sufficient degree of swelling and ion exchange capacity. Scanning electron microscopy images revealed an ultrafine hybrid structure with an interconnected network of submicron particles embedded within the microporous polyethersulfone support. An intramembrane diffusion model was used to describe kinetics of heavy metal sorption by these hydrogels and the calculated apparent diffusion coefficients were 2-3 times larger than in commercial ion-exchange resins. characterized using FTIR-ATR, SEM and dynamic adsorption of copper 
from a dilute solution. Effects of monomer concentrations on the properties 
and separation performance of membrane adsorbers are presented.

uptake, the sorption behavior of its non-active chemical analogue rhenium 
(
75Re) on amino-functionalized macroporous hydrophilic copolymer was 
studied. The pseudo-second-order (PSO) model provided the best fit for the 
kinetic data, while the intraparticle diffusion (IPD) model indicated a 
pronounced influence of the porous structure on the sorption rates. The 
maximum sorption capacity was found to be 84 mg g-1 and 74 % removal 
efficiency was reached after 180 min in citrate buffer at pH 5.0.

AB  - The removal of Co-60 and Sr-90 from the aqueous phase was tested using red mud - the fine grained residue from bauxite ore processing. This industrial waste represents a mixture of numerous minerals, mainly oxides and hydroxides of Fe, Al, Si, and Ti. Experiments were conducted as a function of contact time, pH, and pollutant concentrations. Kinetic data were well fitted with a pseudo-second order equation. The calculated rate constants and initial sorption rates indicated faster sorption of Sr2+ ions. Removal of both cations rapidly increased with the initial pH increase from 2.5 to 3.5. With the further increase of pH, Co2+ sorption was nearly constant (98%-100%), whereas Sr2+ removal remained at the same level to initial pH similar to 8 and gradually increased to 100% at pH 12. Equilibrium sorption data followed the Langmuir model, with the maximum sorption capacities of 0.52 mmol/g for Co2+ and 0.31 mmol/g for Sr2+. Sorbed cations exhibited high stability in distilled water. Desorption of Co2+ was also negligible in the presence of the competing Ca2+ cation, while 42%-25% of Sr2+ ions were desorbed depending on the previously sorbed amount. The results indicate that red mud is of potential significance as Co2+ and Sr2+ immobilization agent due to its high efficiency, abundance, and low-cost.

AB  - Macroporous crosslinked poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol 
dimethacrylate) [PGME-deta] functionalized with diethylene triamine was 
used for removal of Mo(VI) oxyanions from aqueous solutions. Kinetics of 
Mo(VI) sorption was investigated in batch experiments by varying initial 
Mo(VI) concentration. Sorption kinetics data was fitted to chemical-reaction 
and particle-diffusion models. It was shown that Mo(VI) sorption adhered to 
the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, with a definite influence of pore 
diffusion. The maximum Mo(VI) sorption capacity at pH 2.0 and 298K was 
391 mg g-1.

AB  - Illicit production and trade of Cannabis sativa affect many societies. This drug is the most popular and easy to produce. Important information for the authorities is the production locality and the indicators of a particular production. This work is an attempt to recognise correlations between the metal content in the different parts of C. sativa L., in soils where plants were cultivated and the cannabinoids content, as a potential indicator. The organic fraction of the leaves of Cannabis plants was investigated by GC-FID analysis. In addition, the determination of Cu, Fe, Cr, Mn, Zn, Ca and Mg was realised by spectroscopic techniques (FAAS and GFAAS). In this study, numerous correlations between metal content in plants and soil, already confirmed in previous publications, were analysed applying chemometric unsupervised methods, that is, principal component analysis, factor analysis and cluster analysis, in order to highlight their role in the biosynthesis of cannabinoids.

Stability of zirconia sol in the presence of various inorganic electrolytes

AB  - The zirconia sol was prepared from a zirconium oxychloride solution by forced hydrolysis at 102 degrees C. The prepared sol consisted of almost spherical, monoclinic, hydrated zirconia particles of 61 nm in diameter. The stability of zirconia sol in the presence of various inorganic electrolytes (LiCl, NaCl, KCl, CsCl, KBr, KI, KNO3 and K2SO4) was studied by the potentiometric titration method. The dependence of the critical concentration of coagulation (ccc) on the dispersion pH was determined for all studied electrolytes. The critical coagulation concentration values for all investigated electrolytes were lower at higher pH values. These values for all 1:1 electrolytes were the same within the range of experimental error. For a given pH value, the cccs of K2SO4 are 3-4 orders of magnitude lower than the corresponding values for the 1:1 electrolytes.

AB  - Hydrogels containing strong acid groups have been used in the past for the removal of heavy metals. Unfortunately such hydrogels exhibit poor mechanical properties and are generally difficult to handle. In this work we prepared asymmetric membranes incorporatingcross-linked 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propane sulfonic acid (AMPS) hydrogel by combining photopolymerization and liquid phase inversion. An experimental design measuring water content and ion-exchange capacity of these membranes was used to select the optimal membrane composition for the removal of Pb2+, Ni2+, and Cd2+ ions from aqueous solutions. The results demonstrated fast sorption kinetics and high capacity for the investigated metals.

Analysis of Factors Influencing Cu(II) Sorption By Clinoptiolite

AB  - Experimental design methodology represents a powerful tool for the analysis and optimization of various processes. Immobilization of toxic substances by sorption onto low-cost materials has gained a lot of attention in the last decade. Fundamental knowledge about sorption processes and their practical use can be improved by experimental planning and statistical analysis. In this study, the effects of initial metal concentration and pH, as well as the sorbent mass and particle size, on Cu(II) sorption by natural clinoptilolite were evaluated and compared. Full factorial experimental design at two levels was applied. Statistically significant factors were determined considering residual Cu(II) concentrations as a system response. The Pareto graphs of standardized effects, Main effect plots and Interaction plots were created using statistical software. Initial sorbate concentration, sorbent mass and their interaction were recognized as statistically significant, at 95% confidence level. Main effect plot approved that sorbent mass increase and initial Cu(II) concentration decrease caused reduction of residual Cu(II) concentration in solution. On the other hand, the change of initial solution pH and sorbent particle size didnt provoke significant response changes. Bearing in mind that pH is a factor with high effect on heavy metal sorption, the insignificant influence of initial pH detected in this study can be explained by buffering properties of the applied clinoptilolite and relatively narrow pH range chosen in order to prevent sorbent dissolution on one side and sorbate precipitation on the other. By regression analysis, the mathematical model for process description was derived. The correlation between predicted and experimental values was high (R-2 GT 0.99). In the investigated ranges of parameters, the obtained empirical equation can be applied for the prediction of system response.
