AB - Austenitic stainless steel 316L finds a number of applications including filtration technology, nuclear industry, biomedicine, etc. Powder metallurgy (PM) allows obtaining the desired structure of the material, from full density to highly porous one, and PM technology most often comprises pressing and sintering steps. Gravity sintering, applied in this work, i.e. liquid phase sintering where the pressing step is excluded, is enabled by adding small amount of boron or its compound [1]. The addition of NiB lowers the sintering temperature by formation of eutectics (liquid phase), and also enhances mechanical properties (tensile strength, hardness) and corrosion resistance of 316L steel [2]. The aim of this work was to examine the surface behavior of PM-obtained 316L-NiB exposed to conditions of high heat fluxes by employing nanosecond laser pulses (TEA CO2 laser emitting at 10.6 μm, fluence ~14 J/cm2, intensity ~40 MW/cm2), which is reported scarcely in literature [3]. Simultaneously with irradiation in vacuum, plasma formed by laser irradiation above the sample surface was analyzed using LIBS (Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy). Namely, small amount of boron (1 wt.% of NiB contains 83 wt.% of Ni and 17 wt.% of B) is not easily detected in gravity sintered sample and one of the techniques of choice could be the LIBS. For comparison purposes, 316L sample wihout NiB was also examined. Laser-irradiated surfaces were analyzed using SEM connected to EDX device. The damage was superficial, with intense melting in the central part of the irradiated spot, Fig. 1(a). LIBS analysis, Fig. 1(b), has shown successful in detecting the presence of boron in the 316L-NiB stainless steel, with low estimated limit of detection of 32 ppm.

AB - The behavior of Oxide Dispersion Strengthened (ODS) steel with addition of hafnium, as well as AISI 316L steel, at high laser intensity of ~1013 W/cm2 in ambiences of air and vacuum, was studied. Irradiation source was Ti:Sapphire laser operating at 804 nm and pulse length of ~65 fs. Morphological and chemical studies were considered, thus that: (i) given laser intensity induced damages on both steels with the damage being more prominent on AISI 316L steel; (ii) various surface features were present, such as coral-like structure and Laser Induced Periodic Surface Structures (LIPSS), with LIPSS being dominant on the surface; (iii) the interaction was accompanied by generation of plasma above the target, and (iv) chemical analysis has shown that surface elemental content also depends on the ambience used.

AB - The behavior of 16Cr3Al ODS steel (oxide dispersion strengthened steel), widely employed structural fusion material, under high-intensity laser radiation with intensity up to 10(14)W/cm(2) was investigated in air, helium and vacuum surrounding. Employed system was 65 fs laser at 804 nm, with applied pulse energy up to 5.25 mJ. Morphological effects were studied - cracking, crater parameters (depth, cross-section), LIPSS (laser-induced periodic surface structures) formation at the crater periphery, hydrodynamic effects, as well as chemical variations on the surface. Ablation thresholds were also determined for all three ambiences (for 100 applied pulses), and they were 0.30 J/cm(2), 0.23 J/cm(2) and 0.39 J/cm(2) in air, helium and vacuum, respectively. Plasma occurred in all experiments and it was most prominent in vacuum due to strongest laser-material coupling.

AB - A study of ASP 30 steel surface modification with high intensity Ti:sapphire laser, operating at 804 nm wavelength and pulse duration of 60 fs, in vacuum ambient, is presented. ASP 30 steel surface variations were studied at laser intensities of 10(14) and 10(13) W/cm(2). The steel target specific surface changes and phenomena observed are: (i) Creation of craters at 10(14) W/cm(2) intensity; (ii) formation of periodic surface structures only at the reduced intensity of 10(13) W/cm(2); (iii) chemical surface changes registered only at higher laser intensity, and (iv) occurrence of plasma in front of the surface, including its emission in X-ray region. It can be concluded from this study that the reported laser intensities can effectively be applied for ASP 30 steel surface modification. Careful choosing of laser intensity and pulse count can lead to precise superficial material removal, for example laser intensity similar to 10(13) W/cm(2) and low pulse count can lead to ultra-precise surface processing. Generally, femtosecond laser surface modification of ASP 30 steel is non-contact and very rapid compared with traditional modification methods.
