AB - Polyurethane (PU) nanocomposites are highly utilized in biomedical devices/implants due to their excellent mechanical properties, good biocompatibility, and low cytotoxicity. These PU nanocomposites with silver nanoparticles are well known potent antimicrobial agents. Biocompatible magnetic nanoparticles such as ferrites has also gained attention especially in various fields of drug delivery, biosensing and magnetic resonance imaging which requires highly specific magnetic nanoparticle (MNP) properties such as uniform size distribution, less agglomeration and stability in the biological medium. Among MNP, copper and zinc ferrites have been broadly applicable in biomedical, optoelectronic, catalysis and drug delivery. With a view to design PU/ferrites nanocomposites and to explore their antimicrobial potential, the present preliminary study reports the preparation of PU nanocomposites with copper ferrite and zinc ferrite (1 wt.%) and with the same composition. The nanocomposites were characterized using water absorption and swelling measurements. The antimicrobial activity of these composites was investigated against four bacterial strains: Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecium, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Klebsiella pneumoniae, and one Candida strain, C. albicans and compared with those of PU nanocomposites with silver ferrite nanoparticles. PU nanocomposites based on zinc and copper ferrites did not show antimicrobial activity, on the contrary they supported microbial attachment and growth. However, PU nanocomposites with silver ferrite did not show significant antibacterial activity but show antifungal activity and it is related with hydrophilicity of the prepared materials.

AB - BaTiO3 (BTO) is considered the most commonly used ceramic material in multilayer ceramic capacitors due to its desirable dielectric properties. Considering that the miniaturization of electronic devices represents an expanding field of research, modification of BTO has been performed to increase dielectric constant and DC bias characteristic/sensitivity. This research presents the effect of N2 and air atmospheres on morphological and dielectric properties of BTO nanoparticles modified with organometallic salt at sintering temperatures of 1200∘1200∘C, 1250∘1250∘C, 1300∘1300∘C, and 1350∘1350∘C. Measured dielectric constants were up to 35,000, with achieved very high values in both atmospheres. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) was used for morphological characterization, revealing a porous structure in all the samples. The software image analysis of FESEM images showed a connection between particle and pore size distribution, as well as porosity. Based on the data from the image analysis, the prediction of dielectric properties in relation to morphology indicated that yttrium-based organometallic salt reduced oxygen vacancy generation in N2 atmosphere. DC bias sensitivity measurements showed that samples with higher dielectric constant had more pronounced sensitivity to voltage change, but most of the samples were stable up to 100 V, making our modified BTO a promising candidate for capacitors.

AB - Polymers and polymer matrix composites are commonly used materials with applications extending from packaging materials to delicate electronic devices. Epoxy resins and fiber-reinforced epoxy-based composites have been used as adhesives and construction parts. Fractal analysis has been recognized in materials science as a valuable tool for the microstructural characterization of composites by connecting fractal characteristics with composites’ functional properties. In this study, fractal reconstructions of different microstructural shapes in an epoxy-based composite were performed on field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) images. These images were of glass fiber reinforced epoxy as well as a hybrid composite containing both glass and electrospun polystyrene fibers in an epoxy matrix. Fractal reconstruction enables the identification of self-similarity in the fractal structure, which represents a novelty in analyzing the fractal properties of materials. Fractal Real Finder software, based on the mathematical affine fractal regression model, was employed to reconstruct different microstructure shapes and calculate fractal dimensions to develop a method of predicting the optimal structure–property relations in composite materials in the future.

AB - The energy that comes from the source of ionizing radiation is enormous and quite
unused. Using energy from ionizing radiation is a novel concept, while so far in the
literature (to the best of our knowledge), only beta radiation has been treated as a
possible source of energy (Quenon 2021). This paper focuses on utilizing gamma
radiation energy using the Cobalt-60 radiation source. Direct conversion of radiation into electrical energy is possible using pn or pin junction-based semiconductor
structures. When high-energy photons hit a semiconductor structure, a built-in
electric field of pn junction can separate the generated electron-hole pairs before
they recombine, creating the potential difference at the component electrodes. The
PIN diodes used in this paper were made in planar technology, with three different
active area surfaces: 0.8, 5 and 80 mm2
, at the Center of Microelectronic Technologies, Institute of Chemistry, Technology and Metallurgy, University of Belgrade,
Serbia. The experiment was conducted in controlled laboratory conditions at the
Department of Radiation and Environmental Protection at the Vinča Institute of
Nuclear Sciences, Belgrade, Serbia. The range of gamma radiation dose rates for
which the PIN diodes have been tested is from 1 µGy/h to 10 Gy/h under controlled
conditions at room temperature. It is necessary for the diode to operate in a photovoltaic mode to act as a current source in an electrical circuit. Therefore, during irradiation, the characteristics of diodes: short-circuit current and open-circuit voltage
were measured as the most important parameters of the current source. The lowest
detected dose rate value of the PIN diode with the largest active area (80 mm2
) was
5 mGy/h, while diodes with middle (5 mm2
) and the smallest active area (0.8 mm2
)
were 100 mGy/h. The short-circuit current values of PIN diodes for all active area dimensions have a linear dependence with a given dose rate range. By calculating the
short-circuit current density, we obtain that diodes with different active areas have
almost the same dependence on the dose rate. This result indicates that the current
generated under the ionizing radiation directly depends on the size of the active
region of the PIN diode. On the other hand, open-circuit voltage values do not have
a linear dependence on the dose rate, even the diode with the smallest active area
(0.8 mm2
) has higher values than the diode with the middle active area (5 mm2
).
For the highest dose rate (10 Gy/h), the short-circuit current value of the PIN diode
with the largest active area is 37 nA, and the open-circuit voltage is 118 mV, which
can enable power supply of the low power electric circuits by connecting diodes in
series and parallel. The research should continue in order to develop a self-powered
circuit that will monitor radioactive sources and their environment.

AB - The focus of this study is on the preparation and characterization of magnetic nanocomposite membranes for gas separation. Magnetic nanoparticles of strontium ferrite (SrFe12O19) were incorporated into ethylcellulose via solvent casting method, in order to promote oxygen diffusion against nitrogen. The influence of the nanoparticle content on the mechanical and separation properties of the nanocompositewas investigatedusing micro Vickers method and tensile test. In order to identify the structures formed by membrane processing, various analyzes were performed, such as scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and infrared spectroscopy with Fourier transformation (FTIR). The permeability of magnetic nanocomposite membranes was tested by monitoring the output pressure change of the nitrogen and oxygen mixtures, as well as pure nitrogen. It has been established that all of the starting components have remained intact during processing, indicating that an appropriate processing method was chosen. Nanocomposite membranes with a higher content of magnetic nanoparticles have shown a significant improvement in mechanical properties compared to pure ethylcellulose, with high permeability. These findings have shown that nanocomposite membranes based on ethylcellulose are an excellent candidate for gas separation.

AB - The applicative potential of synthetic calcium phosphates, especially hydroxyapatite (HAp), has become intensely broadened in the past 10 years, from bone tissue engineering to multiple other fields of biomedicine. Previously we have shown that hydroxyapatite nanoparticles coated with chitosan-poly(D,L)-lactide-co-glycolide (HAp/Ch-PLGA) target lungs following their intravenous administration into mice. For this purpose radioactive 125-Iodine (125I), a low energy gamma emitter, was used to develop a novel in situ method for radiolabeling of particles and investigation of their biodistribution. In this study we utilize an emulsification process and freeze drying to load the composite particles based on hydroxyapatite nanocarrier, chitosane and poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) with 17β- hydroxy-17α-picolyl-androst-5-en-3β-acetate (A), a chemotherapeutic derivative of androstane. The picolyl androstane derivatives showed high potency in the cell inhibitors of hormonedependent cancers (adenocarcinoma, prostate cancer, cervix carcinoma, colon cancer, etc.). 1H NMR, 13C NMR and high-resolution time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MS) techniques confirmed the intact structure of the derivative A following its entrapment within HAp/Ch-PLGA particles. The synthesized particles of A-loaded HAp/Ch-PLGA were found to be spherical in shape with a uniform size distribution of d50=168 nm. The release of A from HAp/Ch-PLGA was sustained, with no burst release or plateauing after three weeks. The obtained results of the DET and MTT tests show that the particles of A-loaded HAp/Ch-PLGA exhibit almost three times higher cytotoxicity towards lung adenocarcinoma cells (A549) than towards healthy cells (MRC5), while at the same time allowing twice as fast recovery of healthy cells. We have also analyzed the period of recovery of healthy, as well as cancer cells, following the treatment with A-loaded HAp/Ch-PLGA. After treatment with A-loaded HAp/Ch-PLGA, healthy cells recover twice as fast as the malignant ones. Immunofluorescent staining of primary fibroblasts interacting with HAp/Ch-PLGA and A-HAp/Ch-PLGA particles demonstrates no negative morphological or proliferative effects on cells.

The thermogravimetric and differential thermal analyses coupled with mass spectrometry were used to assess the thermal degradation products and properties of A-loaded HAp/Ch-PLGA. The loading efficiency, as indicated by the comparison of enthalpies of phase transitions in pure A and A-loaded HAp/Ch-PLGA, equaled 7.47wt.%. The release of A from HAp/Ch-PLGA was sustained, neither exhibiting a burst release nor plateauing after three weeks. Atomic force microscopy and particle size distribution analyses were used to confirm that the particles were spherical with a uniform size distribution of d50=168nm. In vitro cytotoxicity testing of A-loaded HAp/Ch-PLGA using MTT and trypan blue dye exclusion assays demonstrated that the particles were cytotoxic to the A549 human lung carcinoma cell line (46±2%), while simultaneously preserving high viability (83±3%) of regular MRC5 human lung fibroblasts and causing no harm to primary mouse lung fibroblasts. In conclusion, composite A-loaded HAp/Ch-PLGA particles could be seen as promising drug delivery platforms for selective cancer therapies, targeting malignant cells for destruction, while having a significantly lesser cytotoxic effect on the healthy cells.

AB - A novel method combining a traditional immersion precipitation process for making membranes with photopolymerization and crosslinking of functional monomers included in the casting solution was used to prepare asymmetric polyethersulfone membranes with submicron particles incorporating glycidyl methacrylate copolymer. In order to introduce sulfonic groups, the epoxide rings of glycidyl methacrylate were opened using two methods. The first method was functionalization with sodium sulfite, and the second was functionalization with sulfuric acid and then grafting with 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid. The obtained membranes were characterized using infrared spectroscopy, conductometric titration and water permeability measurements. Scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy were used to investigate the surface morphology and topology of the membranes. Dynamic adsorption of rhodamine B as a model dye was used to demonstrate the suitability of these novel membranes for membrane adsorption since the adsorption capacity for dye cations was much better for the membranes functionalized with sodium sulfite and the membranes grafted with 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid compared to the non-functionalized membranes.

AB - Metastabile nanopowder ZnTiO3 pressed into cylindrical compacts at 200 MPa was submitted to conventional heating with isothermal holding at 931oC for 10 minutes, 25 minutes and 40 minutes. Same compacts were heated with two-step sintering schedule with maximal 912oC and isothermal holding at 896oC, for approximately the same holding times as with isothermal. Shrinkage during heating was monitored with dilatometric device, while microstructure was determined with atomic force microscopy. XRD patterns were collected for the most prominent samples. Sintered specimens microstructure showed differences introduced during last sintering stage by two heating schedules.

AB - Asymmetric polyethersulfone membranes with submicron particles comprising crosslinked poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid) were prepared by a combination of a traditional liquid phase inversion process for making membranes with photopolymerization and crosslinking of functional monomers included in the casting solution. Scanning electron microscope images of the membrane cross-section revealed a hybrid structure with an interconnected network of submicron particles embedded within the porous polyethersulfone support. Permeation of toluidine blue solutions through non-functionalized membranes showed a dramatic effect of 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid concentration in the casting solution on the dynamic adsorption performance. The epoxide groups present in glycidyl methacrylate copolymer were transformed into amine functionalities by ring opening under alkaline conditions. Permeation of dilute Cu2+ solutions through functionalized membranes demonstrated that the plate height for some of these membranes was an order of magnitude smaller than for commercial particle-filled membranes used in solid phase extraction. AB - Series of novel hydrogels based on 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate (HEA) and itaconic acid (IA), P(HEA/IA) copolymers, were prepared by free radical cross-linking copolymerization and investigated as potential adsorbents for Cd2+ removal from aqueous solution. The hydrogels before and after Cd2+ adsorption were characterized using FTIR, temperature sensitive. In order to evaluate adsorption behavior of samples various factors affecting the Cd2+ uptake behavior, such as: contact time, temperature, pH, ionic strength, adsorbent weight, competitive ions and initial concentration of the metal ions were investigated. Five adsorption isotherms and two kinetic models were studied. The adsorption behavior can be very well described by the pseudo-second order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm. Multicomponent adsorption studies revealed that adsorption of cadmium depends on the type of metal ions present in the system. Desorption studies showed that hydrogel can be reused three times with only 15% loss of adsorption capacity. All results indicate that the sample with the highest IA content is the most promising adsorbent for Cd2+ removal. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - Asymmetric polyethersulfone membranes with submicron particles comprising crosslinked glycidyl methacrylate copolymer were prepared by a combination of a traditional immersion precipitation process for making membranes with photopolymerization and crosslinking of functional monomers included in the casting solution. As the concentration of polymerizable monomers increased the original macrovoid structure was replaced by a hybrid morphology with microglobules typical of macroporous methacrylate adsorbers embedded within microporous structure with no significant effects on water permeability. The epoxide groups present in glycidyl methacrylate copolymer were transformed into amine functionalities by ring opening under alkaline conditions. Permeation of Orange G solution at low transmembrane pressures was used to demonstrate suitability of these novel membranes for membrane adsorption. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

AB - Glassy carbon plates were irradiated with 15 key H(+) ion-beam in the fluence range of 1 x 10(16)-3 x 10(18) ion cm(-2). The influence of ion irradiation on surface morphology and topology was examined by scanning electron and atomic force microscopy. Structural changes were monitored by Raman spectrometry, while changes of wettability and the content of surface oxygen complexes were examined by contact angle measurements and temperature programmed desorption. Elastic recoil detection analysis was applied for determination of hydrogen concentration profiles in irradiated samples. Cyclic voltammetry was used for the assessment of the electrochemical properties of modified glassy carbon electrodes. It was concluded that there is critical fluence range (2 x 10(17)-5 x 10(17) ion cm(-2)) inside of which significant changes of glassy carbon properties occur. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. AB - We report the results of ion irradiation influence on rare earth sesquioxides structure, which are materials of practical importance as a radiation resistant ceramics in nuclear applications. Y2O3, Gd2O3 and Er2O3 sesquioxides in the pellet form were irradiated by oxygen ions (O2+) beam with the energy of 30 keV and implantation fluence of 5 x 10(20) m (2). Samples are characterized by Grazing Incidence X-ray Diffraction (GIXRD), Raman spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy (AFM). By GIXRD it was found partial transformation from cubic (C) to monoclinic (B) phase only in Gd2O3, induced by O2+ irradiation. This was confirmed by Raman spectroscopy. Although full phase transition from C to B phase in Y2O3 was not observed, the splitting and broadening of the main intensity Raman band for C phase could be explained by the stress and the disorder induced by the quenching. Analysis done by AFM showed changes in surface topology, i.e. values of average roughness (Ra) and root mean squared roughness (RMS) were significantly changed after irradiation for all samples. RMSs in Y2O3 before and after irradiation were 35 nm and 26 nm, respectively. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - In this paper, results of structural modification of fullerene thin films by single and multiple charged boron ions (B+, B3+) are presented. The applied ion energies were in the range of 15-45 keV. The characterization of as-deposited and irradiated specimens has been performed by atomic force microscopy, Raman and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and UV/vis spectrophotometry. The results of Raman analysis have shown the formation of amorphous layer after irradiation of fullerene thin films. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy has confirmed the formation of new B-C bonds in irradiated films at higher fluences (2 x 10(16) cm(-2)). The morphology of bombarded films has been changed significantly. The optical band gap was found to be reduced from 1.7 to 1.06 eV for irradiated films by B3+ ions and 0.7 eV for irradiated films by B+ ions. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - The interaction of a picosecond Nd: YAG laser ( wavelength 532 nm, pulse duration 40 ps) with a polycrystalline titanium nitride ( TiN) film was studied. The TiN thin film was deposited by physical vapour deposition on a silicon substrate. The titanium nitride/ silicon system was modified with an energy fluence from 0.2 to 5.9 J cm(-2). Multi- pulse irradiation was performed in air by a focused laser beam. Surface modifications were analysed after 1 - 100 successive laser pulses. Depending on the laser pulse energy and pulse count, the following phenomena were observed: ( i) increased surface roughness, ( ii) titanium nitride film cracking, ( iii) silicon substrate modification, ( iv) film exfoliation and ( v) laser- induced periodical surface structures on nano- ( NPSS) and micro- dimensions ( MPSS).

AB - The formation of amorphous carbon nitride under bombardment of fullerene thin films by single and multiple charged nitrogen ions is presented in this paper. The characterization of a new amorphous carbon nitride phase was performed by Raman, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, low angle x-ray diffraction and UV/Vis spectrophotometry. The structural modification in fullerene films after bombardment by single and multiple charged nitrogen ions has been examined by atomic force microscopy. It was found that the surface ordering has been changed significantly depending on the charge of the used ions. The optical band gap was found to be varied from 1.7 to 1.3 eV for bombarded films by N5+ ions and 1.4 eV for irradiated films by N+ ions.

AB - Yb3+-doped Ba and Sr diphyllosilicates (hexacelsians) have been synthesized using the Na form of LTA zeolite by ion-exchange procedure and thermal treatment. The crystal structures of both doped samples are refined and described in this article. The results of Rietveld refinements clearly indicate that Yb3+ ions are incorporated into the hexacelsians structure. AFM photomicrographs show round-shaped particles with the size of few microns. The magnetization measurements were done within the 2-300 K temperature range, revealing an enhancement of magnetization with temperature that is not in accordance with simple paramagnetic behavior.

AB - In this paper, the results of structural modification of fullerene thin films bombarded by highly charged iron ions (Fe6+) are presented. The properties of as-deposited and irradiated fullerene thin films have been investigated by Raman spectroscopy, UV/Vis spectrophotometry and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The results of Raman spectroscopy have indicated structural changes of irradiated thin films depending on fluences. It was found that iron doped fullerene films are dominated by sp(3) rather than sp(2) after bombardment which might be due to formation of nanodiamond structures. AFM analysis showed that the ion beam had destroyed the surface ordering. The optical band gap was found to be in the range of 0.6 to 1.4 eV for irradiated films by Fe6+ ions at the highest fluences.

AB - The aim of this work was to prepare lanthanum nickel oxide (LaNiO3, LNO) thin films of different morphology and orientation. The precursor solutions were prepared by a chemical method from citric salts of lanthanum and nickel. Films were deposited using spin-on technique on Si (10 0) substrates. Tailoring of the films orientation and morphology has been attained through two thermal treatment processes with different heating 9 devices: tubular furnace (process 1) and hot plate (process 2). Films were annealed at 600 and 700 degrees C, with heating rates: 20 degrees C/min (process 1) and I degrees C/min (process 2). Annealing times were from 30 min to 20 h. LNO films were characterized by AFM and X-ray diffraction analysis. Depending on the heating process applied, the obtained films showed very different structures, from completely amorphous to well crystallized and highly oriented. Films treated by process I were polycrystalline, had smaller oval grains and lower roughness parameters than films heated on a hot plate. Due to the low heating rate and heating from the substrate side, films obtained through process 2 were highly (I 10) oriented with elongated grains aligned along one direction.

AB - We investigated the effect of gamma-irradiation on the cytotoxicity of pure C-60 solubilized in water by using tetrahydrofuran (THF/n-C-60 or THF/n-C-60). In contrast to THF/n-C-60, its gamma-irradiated counterpart failed to generate oxygen radicals and cause extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK)-dependent necrotic cell death in various types of mammalian cells. Moreover, gamma-irradiated THF/n-C-60 protected cells from the oxidative stress induced by native THF/n-C-60 or hydrogen peroxide. The observed biological effects were associated with of THF and subsequent derivatization of the n-C-60 surface. These results for the first time demonstrate gamma-irradiation-mediated changes in the physico-chemical properties of THF-prepared nanocrystalline C-60, resulting in a complete loss of its cytotoxic effect and its conversion to a cytoprotective agent. AB - The effect of an 80Ni-20Cr (at.%) metallic coating on the cyclic oxidation behaviour of a Ti3Al-based alloy with the composition Ti-25Al-11Nb (at.%) was investigated in this study. Cyclic oxidation tests were carried out in air at 600 degrees C and 900 degrees C for 120 h. For one cycle test, the specimens were held for 24 h at test temperature and then furnace-cooled to room temperature. The oxidation rate was determined by plotting the mass gain per unit surface area of the specimen vs. exposure time. The morphology and composition of the oxidation products were characterized on the cross-section of the specimens by scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy. The oxidation scale forms during exposure at both 600 degrees C and 900 degrees C. TiO2 is the main oxide component, whereas the Al2O3 layer appears only discontinuously. The remarkable improvement in oxidation resistance at 900 degrees C was attributed to the chemical composition and structure of the scale formed on the 80Ni-20Cr coating.

AB - Photoacoustic (PA) heat-transmission measurements were used to study transport in a nearly intrinsic Ge single crystal. A theoretical model was developed which quantitatively describes excess carrier and thermal-wave space distributions, within the semiconductor under monochromatic cw modulated excitation. The PA heat-transmission, reflection, and photothermal-beam-deflection signals can be calculated using this model. It is shown that the frequency characteristic of the measurement system can be eliminated using measurements on different thicknesses of the same sample. It is also shown that both the normalized phase and amplitude spectra, as a function of the modulation frequency, can be used to determine the values of the thermal diffusivity, the excess-carrier lifetime, and the surface recombination velocity.
