AB - It has been shown that angiogenesis and inflammation play an important role in development of most hematological malignancies including the myeloproliferative neoplasm (MPN). The aim of this study was to investigate and correlate the levels of key angiogenic molecules such as hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) in peripheral blood and bone marrow cells of MPN patients, along with JAK2V617F mutation allele burden and effects of therapy. HIF-1 and VEGF gene expression were decreased, while eNOS mRNA levels were increased in granulocytes of MPN patients. Furthermore, positively correlated and increased VEGF and eNOS protein levels were in negative correlation with HIF-1 levels in granulocytes of MPN patients. According to immunoblotting, the generally augmented angiogenic factors demonstrated JAK2V617F allele burden dependence only in granulocytes of PMF. The angiogenic factors were largely reduced after hydroxyurea therapy in granulocytes of MPN patients. Levels of eNOS protein expression were stimulated by Calreticulin mutations in granulocytes of essential thrombocythemia. Immunocytochemical analyses of CD34(+) cells showed a more pronounced enhancement of angiogenic factors than in granulocytes. Increased gene expression linked to the proinflammatory TGF and MAPK signaling pathways were detected in CD34(+) cells of MPN patients. In conclusion, the angiogenesis is increased in several cell types of MPN patients supported by the transcriptional activation of inflammation-related target genes, and is not limited to bone marrow stroma cells. It also appears that some of the benefit of hydroxyurea therapy of the MPN is mediated by effects on angiogenic factors. (c) 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

AB - The activity concentrations of natural radionuclides (K-40, Pb-210, Po-210, Ra-226 and Ra-228) in 17 most frequently used cigarette brands in Serbia and corresponding effective doses due to smoke inhalation are presented. The mean annual effective doses for Pb-210 and Po-210 were estimated to be 47.3 and 724 A mu Sv y(-1) for Pb-210 and Po-210, respectively. Serbia currently has the highest smoking rate in the world. The results of this study indicate the high contribution of the annual effective dose due to smoke inhalation to the total inhalation dose from natural radionuclides. The more effective implementation of actions for reducing smoking prevalence in Serbia is highly needed.

AB - We present a modified solution combustion synthesis method and measured magnetic properties of CaMnO3-delta (calcium manganite). The structure, morphology and magnetic properties of CaMnO3-delta were investigated by XRPD (X-ray powder diffraction), TEM (transmission electron microscopy), HRTEM (high-resolution transmission electron microscopy) and SQUID (superconducting quantum interference device). The XRPD study revealed that the prepared sample is composed of pure calcium manganite phase. The TEM and HRTEM images showed well-crystallized particles with a rough surface and particle size of about 100 nm. Magnetization measurements revealed magnetic transition at T-N=120 K, which corresponds to the Neel temperature of calcium manganite. Paramagnetic behavior was measured above the TN temperature. High irreversibility between the ZFC (zero-field cooled) and the FC (field cooled) curves below TN were observed. In addition, the separation between ZFC and FC curves increased with increasing magnetic field. We also show that the temperature values at the maxima of the ZFC curves are insensitive to the value of the applied DC magnetic field and to the frequency of the AC magnetic field. Magnetic measurements also indicate the presence of a strong antiferromagnetic exchange coupling with a Curie-Weiss temperature theta=-436 K. Magnetic moment of 4.33 mu(B) per Mn ion is determined from the Curie constant. This value of the magnetic moment suggests that Mn3+ and Mn4+ ions exist in the sample. Measurements of the magnetic hysteresis properties indicate a contribution of a ferromagnetic-like component in the sample. This is revealed by large coercivity and high remanence magnetization below TN. In this work we also studied field-cooled (up to 5 T) hysteresis properties of the sample. The detailed analysis of these results suggests a minor hysteresis loop behavior and no exchange bias.

AB - Psychological stress affects different physiological processes including haematopoiesis. However, erythropoietic effects of chronic psychological stress remain largely unknown. The adult spleen contains a distinct microenvironment favourable for rapid expansion of erythroid progenitors in response to stressful stimuli, and emerging evidence suggests that inappropriate activation of stress erythropoiesis may predispose to leukaemic transformation. We used a mouse model to study the influence of chronic psychological stress on erythropoiesis in the spleen and to investigate potential mediators of observed effects. Adult mice were subjected to 2hrs daily restraint stress for 7 or 14 consecutive days. Our results showed that chronic exposure to restraint stress decreased the concentration of haemoglobin in the blood, elevated circulating levels of erythropoietin and corticosterone, and resulted in markedly increased number of erythroid progenitors and precursors in the spleen. Western blot analysis revealed significantly decreased expression of both erythropoietin receptor and glucocorticoid receptor in the spleen of restrained mice. Furthermore, chronic stress enhanced the expression of stem cell factor receptor in the red pulp. Moreover, chronically stressed animals exhibited significantly increased expression of bone morphogenetic protein 4 (BMP4) in the red pulp as well as substantially enhanced mRNA expression levels of its receptors in the spleen. These findings demonstrate for the first time that chronic psychological stress activates BMP4-dependent extramedullary erythropoiesis and leads to the prolonged activation of stress erythropoiesis pathways. Prolonged activation of these pathways along with an excessive production of immature erythroid cells may predispose chronically stressed subjects to a higher risk of leukaemic transformation.

AB - We report on ferromagnetic-like magnetic properties, at room temperature, of spherical nickel oxide core-shell nanoparticles synthesized by sol-gel combustion method. The sample is characterized by using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), selected electron area diffraction (SAED), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), Raman spectroscopy (RS) and superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometer. The SAED, EDX and RS show high quality and purity of the sample. The TEM images point to core-shell NiO nanostructure with a well crystallized NiO core and surface disorder shell. The size of the nanoparticles of about 5 nm and thickness of the surface shell below 1 nm are estimated from the TEM and HRTEM measurements. The measurements of the magnetization reveals ferromagnetic-like behavior of the sample at room temperature with remanent magnetization M-r = 0.0087 emu/g and coercive field H-C = 115 Oe. These magnetic properties are quite different than in NiO bulk materials and uncommon for nanosized NiO materials. These results also indicate that the synthesized NiO core-shell nanostructure is suitable for spin-valve applications. (C) 2012 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

The sample is characterized by using X-ray powder diffractometer (XRPD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometer. TEM reveals iron oxide nanoparticles (maghemite/magnetite) of small sizes of about 4 nm, narrow size distribution and no particle agglomeration. The SQUID measurements show low blocking temperature T-B = 6 K and superparamagnetic behavior above 30 K. Obtained saturation magnetization M-S = 61.1 emu/g is very high, among the highest values for iron oxides of particle size below 5 nm. The field-cooled hysteresis measurements do not show displacement of the hysteresis loop thus indicating an absence of exchange bias, whereas AC susceptibility reveals non-interacting nanoparticles. The values of K-eff and K-S (effective and surface anisotropy constants) obtained in this work are smaller than those reported in the literature for systems where shells disorder spin structure (surface effects) is observed. These results point to highly crystalline iron oxide nanoparticles with a low amount of internal defects and small surface disorder shell thickness which is uncommon for nanoparticles of this size. Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPION) with such properties are convenient for the biomedical applications in targeted diagnostics and drug delivery. (C) 2012 Elsevier B. V. AB - We found novel and superior magnetic properties of the hematite (alpha-Fe2O3) that originate from an internal microstructure of particles and strong inter-particle interactions between nanocrystal sub-units. The hematite particles were synthesized by thermal decomposition of iron (III) nitrate without any template or surfactant. The purity, size, crystallinity, morphology, microstructure and magnetic features of the as-prepared particles were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), Raman spectroscopy (RS) and SQUID magnetometry. An XRD study reveals a pure phase of alpha-Fe2O3 whereas TEM shows alpha-Fe2O3 spheres with a diameter of about 150 nm. RS also shows high quality and purity of the sample. Moreover, TEM and HRTEM images show a pomegranate-like superstructure and evidence that the spherical particles are composed of individual well-crystallized nanoparticle sub-units (self-assembled nanoparticles) with a size of about 20 nm. Magnetic measurements display hysteretic behavior at the room temperature with remanent magnetization M-r = 0.731 emu/g, saturation magnetization M-S = 6.83 emu/g and coercivity H-C = 4350 Oe, as well as the Morin transition at T-M = 261 K. These results and comparison with those in the literature reveal that the sample has extremely high coercivity. The magnetic properties of the sample are discussed in relation to morphology, internal microstructure, surface effects and exchange and dipole-dipole interactions. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. AB - We have observed unusual magnetic properties of NiO (nickel oxide) nanoparticles embedded in a silica matrix. The sample was synthesized by a method based on the contribution of sol-gel and combustion processes. X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) of the sample shows the formation of the nanocrystalline NiO phase whereas transmission electron microscope (TEM) reveals spherical-shaped nanoparticles of about 4 nm diameter. Moreover, HRTEM images show lattice fringes of the nanoparticles and defects in the crystal structure. The temperature and field dependence of the magnetization are also measured. The zero-field-cooled (ZFC) measurements show two maximums, one sharp and narrow at low temperatures similar to 6.5K and an other broad one at higher temperature similar to 64 K. The FC magnetization shows a continuous increase upon lowering the temperature. The M(H) measurements reveal that NiO nanoparticles display anomalous hysteretic behaviors at low temperatures (below the low temperature maximum in the ZFC curve, 2K and 5K) showing that the magnetization initial curve lies below the hysteresis loop for a certain field range. Moreover, jump of the magnetization at low temperatures (2K and 5K) are also observed. These features represent novel magnetic properties for nanosized NiO which may be attributed to the surface spins. Moreover, these results indicate that the NiO nanoparticle consists of magnetically disorder shell and antiferromagnetically order core with an uncompensated magnetic moment. (C) 2011 Elsevier B. V. AB - We report on hydrothermal synthesis, plate-like morphology, microstructure and magnetic properties of hematite (alpha-Fe2O3) plate-like particles. The sample is obtained immediately after the hydrothermal process without using any template and without further heat treatment. The so-obtained sample is characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), field-emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution TEM (HRTEM), and superconducting quantum interference device ( SQUID) magnetometer. XRPD confirms the formation of a single-phase hematite sample whereas EDX reveals that iron and oxygen are the only components of the sample. SEM, FE-SEM, TEM and HRTEM show that the sample is composed of plate-like particles. The width of the particles is similar to 500nm whereas thickness is similar to 100 nm ( aspect ratio 5: 1). The HRTEM images exhibit well defined lattice fringes of alpha-Fe2O3 particles that confirm their high crystallinity. Moreover, the HRTEM analysis indicates the plate-like particles preferring crystal growth along [0 1 2] direction. Magnetic measurements display significant hysteretic behavior at room temperature with coercivity H-C = 1140 Oe, remanent magnetization M-r = 0.125 emu/g and saturation magnetization M-S = 2.15 emu/g as well as the Morin transition at TM similar to 250 K. The magnetic properties are discussed with respect to morphology and microstructure of the particles. The results and comparison with urchin-like, rods, spherical, hexagonal, star-like, dendrites, platelets, irregular, nanoplatelets, nanocolumns and nanospheres hematites reveal that the plate-like particles possess good magnetic properties. One may conjecture that the shape anisotropy plays an important role in the magnetic properties of the sample. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - The influence of the heat treatment on the structural and magnetic properties of the nanoparticle La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 compound has been studied. The starting single-phase sample was prepared by the glycine nitrate method without additional heating. The as-prepared specimen has been afterward annealed at two different temperatures of 600 C and 900 degrees C. All three samples where characterized by XRPD, SEM and TEM, as well as by the SQUID magnetometry. Rietveld analysis of the XRPD data showed the orthorhombic perovskite structure (space group Prima) of all the samples, while the unit cell parameters underwent a contraction with the annealing temperature. The influence of the heat treatment on the crystal structure is to decrease the orthorhombic distortion by changing the geometrical parameters. The TEM micrographs showed the increase of the mean particle size with annealing temperature from 10 nm up to 50 nm. DC magnetization and AC susceptibility measurements revealed the change of magnetic properties with the increase of the particle size: both para-to-ferromagnetic transition temperature T-C and saturation magnetization M-S were shifted to higher values with the simultaneous decrease of the coercivity H-C. In addition, annealing procedure suppresses the spin-glass-like state that emerges in the as-prepared sample below T-f = 95K. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - We report on the synthesis, morphology and magnetic properties of a novel NiO/SiO2 nanostructure. The NiO/SiO2 nanostructure was synthesized by a method based on the contribution of sol-gel and combustion processes. X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) showed the formation of the nanocrystalline NiO phase. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high-resolution TEM (HRTEM) revealed perfectly spherical NiO nanoparticles with diameter of about 5 nm. Amorphous silica shell around the NiO nanoparticles was also observed by HRTEM showing NiO/SiO2 core-shell nanostructure. Magnetic measurements show hysteretic behavior at 2 K with coercivity H-c = 700 Oe, remanent magnetization M-r= 3.9 emu/g, saturation magnetization M-S= 28.2 emu/g and huge magnetic moment m(p) approximate to 1300 mu(B) of the nanoparticles. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high-resolution TEM (HRTEM) revealed perfectly spherical NiO nanoparticles with diameter of about 5 nm. Amorphous silica shell around the NiO nanoparticles was also observed by HRTEM showing NiO/SiO2 core-shell nanostructure. Magnetic measurements show hysteretic behavior at 2 K with coercivity H-c = 700 Oe, remanent magnetization M-r= 3.9 emu/g, saturation magnetization M-S= 28.2 emu/g and huge magnetic moment m(p) approximate to 1300 mu(B) of the nanoparticles. AB - We report on morphological, structural and magnetic properties of alpha-Fe2O3 nanoparticles in an amorphous alumina matrix synthesized by aqueous combustion method. The sample was characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), high-resolution electron microscopy (HREM) and SQUID magnetometry. XRPD study reveals the phase purity of alpha-Fe2O3 whereas HREM images show an unusual spongy structure and well-crystallized nanoparticles with a size of about 25 nm. Magnetic measurements show a high irreversibility temperature T-irr approximate to 350 K, Morin transition at T-M approximate to 210 K, increase of the magnetization below T approximate to 45 K and hysteretic behavior below T-M at 5 K and 200 K. AB - The alpha-Fe2O3/SiO2 nanocomposite containing 45 wt.% of hematite was prepared by the sol-gel method and characterized by using X-ray diffractometer (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and. superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometer. TEM microscopy showed spherical particles with average size about 10 nm, whereas XRD diffraction confirmed the formation of the hematite phase. The magnetic measurements showed anomalous behavior of the hysteresis loops including decrease of high field isothermal magnetization and overlap of initial, remagnetization and magnetization curves. This anomalous behavior represents a novel effect for alpha-Fe2O3/SiO2 nanocomposites. We conjecture that a field-induced antiferromagnetic coupling between nanoparticles may produce this effect. AB - The alpha-Fe(2)O(3)/SiO(2) nanocomposite containing 45 wt% of hematite was prepared by the sol-gel method followed by heating in air at 200 degrees C. The so-obtained composite of iron(III) nanoparticles dissolved in glassy silica matrix was investigated by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometry. XRPD confirms the formation of a single-phase hematite sample, whereas TEM reveals spherical particles in a silica matrix with an average diameter of 10 nm. DC magnetization shows bifurcation of the zero-field-cooled (ZFC) and field-cooled (FC) branches up to the room temperature with a blocking temperature TB 65 K. Isothermal M( H) dependence displays significant hysteretic behaviour below TB, whereas the room temperature data were successfully fitted to a weighted Langevin function. The average particle size obtained from this fit is in agreement with the TEM findings. The small shift of the TB value with the magnetic field strength, narrowing of the hysteresis loop at low applied field, and the frequency dependence of the AC susceptibility data point to the presence of inter-particle interactions. The analysis of the results suggests that the system consists of single-domain nanoparticles with intermediate strength interactions. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - Comparative crystal structure and magnetic properties studies have been conducted on quaternary powder spinel samples LiMn1.82Cr0.18O4 obtained by two different synthesis methods, glycine-nitrate (GN) and ultrasonic spray-pyrolysis (SP). Although both samples possess the same spinel structure of the cubic space group Fd (3) over barm, their low-temperature magnetic properties display significant differences. While the SP sample undergoes only spin-glass transition at the freezing temperature T-f 20 K, the GN sample possesses more complicated low-temperature magnetic behavior of the reentrant spin-glass type with the Neel temperature TN 42K and freezing temperature Tf 22 K. High-temperature magnetic susceptibility of both samples is of the Curie-Weiss type with the effective magnetic moments in agreement with the nominal compositions. This fact together with the results of the chemical analysis discards the existence of the diversity in chemical compositions as a possible cause for the observed differences in the low-temperature magnetism. On the other hand, the crystal structure analysis done by the Rietveld refinement of the X-ray powder diffraction data points to the strong influence of the cation distribution on the ground-state magnetism of these systems. An explanation of this influence is proposed within the framework of a collective Jahn-Teller effect. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - Starting from a nanocomposite consisting of 4 nm hematite nanoparticles embedded in a silica matrix (30 wt.% hematite) and by applying heat treatments at increasing temperatures up to 1050 degrees C, gradual formation of epsilon-Fe2O3 phase was obtained. Besides representing a new synthesis route of epsilon-Fe2O3 phase, the results obtained in this work indicate that under certain conditions hematite nanoparticles are not thermally stable. Hence, like other ferric oxide polymorphs, nanosized hematite can undergo thermally triggered, size-induced structural phase transitions. (C) 2007 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. AB - Nanoscale maghemite samples were obtained by a solid-state displacement reaction activated by mechanochemical treatment for two different milling times, 30 min (sample S1) and 4 h (sample S2). Samples were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and SQUID magnetometry. The results show that prolongation of the milling time increases particle size while reducing the crystallinity, with a strong impact on the magnetic properties. Coercivity of 3.3 kOe at 5 K temperature for S2 is among the highest values reported so far for the maghemite nanoparticles. (c) 2007 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd.
