AB - Magnesium ferrite (MgFe2O4) particles were synthetized by sol-gel method and used in the decolorization of the Acid Violet 109 (anthraquinone dye, AV109) water solutions' by combination of adsorption and heterogeneous Fenton process. The material's morphology and elemental analysis of the surface were revealed by Scanning electron microscopy and Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (SEM/EDS). The X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) technique was used to analyze the crystallographic phase. In the first part of the decolorization experiment, the adsorption ability of the synthesized particles was investigated. During the adsorption study influence of pH was investigated. In the second part of the decolorization experiment, the effects of the various parameters on the Fenton process were studied such as the initial concentrations of hydrogen peroxide, dye, and magnesium ferrite particles. Influence of magnesium ferrite particles structure, pH value and reaction temperature were also investigated. The decolorization reaction was followed by UV-Visible (UV-Vis) spectrophotometry. At optimal conditions, the dye decolorization was 99.1% (55.4% by adsorption and 43.7% by the Fenton process). Both the adsorption and the Fenton process obey second-order kinetics.

AB - The presented research focused on the metallization of polyester, cotton, and polyamide 6.6 fabrics using the silver conductive complex to allow electric conductivity through the fabric's surface and enhance the fabric's mechanical properties. The method used for the metallization of studied fabrics does not require the use of expensive toxic chemicals or electricity, making the process more economically acceptable. The signal attenuation was measured in frequency ranges of 1–4 and 5–12 GHz. After five cycles of metallization, the polyester fabric has higher EMI effectiveness, in a lower range was 45.44 and 57.25 dB. X-ray powder diffractometry (XRD) and infrared spectroscopy with Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometry (FT-IR) characterize the modified tissues. Scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersion spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) was used to determine layers' morphology and elemental composition. Also, the water and air permeability of modified textiles was determined.

AB - Liposome-encapsulated folic acid is incorporated into the films made from sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) (2 mas%) and a mixture of CMC and solagum (9:1 w/w) using the film-forming cast solution method. Histidine is used to increase solubility for folic acid in liposomes (1–5 mg mL−1), and propylene glycol is used as a film plasticizer (2.6 mas%). The obtained films (50–60 µm tick) containing 3.12–20.19 mg of folic acid per gram of film are envisaged to be used as patches for transdermal delivery of folic acid. Therefore, some physical, mechanical, release and structural attributes of the films are scrutinized. Folic acid gives yellow color to the films and contributes to stronger chemical bonds which result in improved strength of the film. Liposomes prolong the release of folic acid from films to 24 h without adverse effects on mechanical properties of the films, but degrade homogeneity of the films, which can be ascribed to its agglomeration within the film matrix as revealed by atomic force microscopy. According to the release at pH 5.5, the film formulation based on a blend of CMC and solagum containing 3 mg mL−1 liposome-encapsulated folic acid is recommended. Practical Application: Folic acid is effective in reducing oxidative stress levels in the skin and neutralizing the harmful free radicals and is also essential for various metabolic reactions in the body. However, the limited solubility of folic acid linked with its poor absorption in an organism, low storage stability, short half-life upon oral consumption, specific food preferences of some people, extensive liver metabolism, and pregnancy-induced vomiting point to a large potential in transdermal usage of folic acid. This has motivated us to design new multicomponent polymer-lipid systems as an alternative solution to overcome some of these drawbacks. The results obtained for these multicomponent films pointed to their potential for prolonged release of folic acid to 24 h, which can also be useful for scientists interested in encapsulating similar poorly soluble compounds in CMC patches. The finding can be also valuable information for pharmaceutical manufacturers and scientists worldwide.

AB - In this paper, an efficient and environmentally friendly approach to the microwave-assisted synthesis of zinc
phthalocyanine (ZnPc) was developed to compare the features and changes in morphology, phase, and optical
properties with crystals obtained under conventional synthesis. Well-crystallized with high yield and purity ZnPc
in β-form was obtained by fast and efficient microwave-assisted procedure after five minutes of microwave
heating. Studies including electron paramagnet resonance (EPR) indicated the improved photosensitizing potential of microwave-produced crystals, creating viable candidates for photodynamic treatment. Gamma rays
aftereffect confirmed the stability of the ZnPc making them versatile in their application in medicine and sophisticated technology.

AB - Polymeric materials are widely used in the chemical and optical industries, the packaging materials industry, and biomedicine. New technologies and the search for innovative and sustainable solutions have contributed to the development of polymer sensors and smart materials. Poly(vinyl-alcohol) (PVA) is a thermoplastic polymer soluble in water. It belongs to the group of non-toxic and completely biodegradable polymers, with excellent thermal and mechanical properties. Polymer-colored films have great potential as sensor systems, primarily due to their visual color change, which makes them easy to use. Azo dyes, which are used for coloring polymer films, represent the most important class of synthetic dyes, and their exceptional properties are reflected in high extinction coefficients, as well as excellent fastness to light and wet processing. Traditionally, azo dyes are used in the food and cosmetic industries, and are also used as pH indicators. In this work, in addition to the synthesis of azo pyridone dyes, polymeric films were also synthesized. The first series of films were synthesized based on PVA and newly synthesized azo dyes, and the sensory properties of the new films were tested. The second series of films were synthesized in order to test the films as dosimeters for γ-radiation, and for this reason, TTC was added to their synthesis. The dye used in the experiments were characterized by ATR-FTIR, NMR and UV-Vis spectra. The chemical structure of the synthesized films was analyzed by ATR-FTIR spectroscopy. The sensory properties of the film were tested in solutions of different pH values, while the possibility for application in dosimetry was tested at different doses of γ-radiation at the 60Co source. Changes in the color of the films were monitored spectrophotometrically by recording reflection spectra.

AB - Researchers are faced with everyday demands for safer and more efficient therapy for many diseases, especially serious one such as various types of cancer. Numerous anticancer drugs are poorly-water soluble and therefore their encapsulation and controlled release remain quite challenge. In present study, we deepened our research of hydrophilic carrier based on poly(methacrylic acid) and casein (PMAC) by investigating its potential for encapsulation and controlled release of novel poorly water-soluble dihydropyrimidion-azo-pyridon compound (DHPMP). DHPMP is a dye that has been proven to show cytotoxic activity against chronic myeloid leukemia K562 cells. By encapsulating DHPMP into the carrier and delivering it into the intestines, DHPMP absorption could be the fastest and the number of therapeutic doses and side effects can be reduced. Carriers based on PMAC and DHPMP (PMAC-DHPMP) were synthetized and characterized by FTIR, SEM and single compression tests. The swelling behavior of PMAC-DHPMP carriers and cumulative DHPMP release were investigated depending on the amount of crosslinker and encapsulated DHPMP in two media which were simulating pH environments in human stomach and intestines. The prolonged and controlled release of DHPMP was achieved. In vitro cytotoxic activity of PMAC-DHPMP carriers against K562 cells and the cell cycle analysis showed great potential of the carriers for application in leukemia treatment.

AB - Electromagnetic interference (EMI) has become a widespread modern environmental pollutant. There is an essential need for practical and applicable materials for its attenuation. Therefore, the presented research has focused on metallization of carbon fabric using the silver conductive complex solution to enhance the surface conductivity and mechanical properties of the fabric. With this amplification and improving the mentioned characteristics, lightweight and flexible modified carbon fibers can be applied in many environments. The modification has been performed in three steps: the silver conductive complex synthesis, carbon fabric immersion into a silver complex solution, treating with temperature for silver deposition by annealing. The method used for the metallization of carbon fabrics surface does not require expensive and toxic chemicals or electricity, making the process more ecologically and economically acceptable. One of the advantages of using the method for surface modification is the possibility of usage for other materials, not only for textiles and foils. The examination of the surface structure, electrical, EMI shielding characteristics, and mechanical properties of carbon fabrics modified by silver deposition contributes to the determination of multifunctional properties of materials. Also, the dependence on the improvement of multispectral electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) characteristics and mechanical properties of materials on the number of cycles has been determined. The most effective material was carbon fabric modified by five cycles, and average attenuation at an L and S bands was 49.67 dB, and a part of C and full X band was 51.07 dB, caused by better coverage by silver particles, increased density and porosity of deposited layer. Increasing the number of silver deposition cycles improves the physical properties of the modified carbon fabrics, where after five cycles the highest maximum force has been measured (2.26 kN). The material's morphology was studied by scanning electron microscopy with Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy. The crystallographic phases of sintered particles were determined by X-ray diffraction. The crystallographic phases of sintered particles were determined by X-ray diffraction.

AB - Organic pollutants and their residues formed after various technological processes can be found all around us (in soil, watercourses, and air). The textile wastewaters contain many hazardous substances which have carcinogenic and mutagenic effects on living organisms. The study divides into two parts; the first part is dedicated to the synthesis and characterization of catalysts, and the second part describes the decolorization of AV 109 solution by the heterogeneous Fenton process using magnesium ferrite as a catalyst. The catalysts are synthesized by the sol-gel technique and sintered at different temperatures (500, 600, and 700 °C). Scanning Electron Microscopy reveals the morphological structure of the ferrite-based catalysts, and the size and form of the used catalysts can describe using some shape factors. Elemental analysis of the supported catalyst surfaces revealed by Scanning Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy. The effect of dye's, hydrogen peroxide's and catalyst's concentrations, pH value, and type of catalyst, on dye removal by the Fenton process was studied. The change of AV 109 concentration during the decolorization was followed using the UV-Visible spectrophotometer.

AB - One of the promising methods for wastewater treatment is adsorption. This study investigated the adsorption of anthraquinone dye Acid violet 109 from water solution using the alumina- iron oxide doped particles prepared by sol-gel method and sintered at 800 °C. The adsorbent morphology and distribution of diameter of the particles were revealed by Scanning Electron Microscopy and Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy. In the second part, the effect of initial dye's and adsorbent's concentrations and pH value on dye adsorption was studied. Also, the kinetic study of dye adsorption covers the pseudo-second-order and intra-particle diffusion. The change of AV 109 concentration during the adsorption was followed using the UV-Visible spectrophotometer. The adsorption kinetics is in accordance with the pseudo-second-order kinetics model. After 60 minutes of treatment, at the initial dye's concentration of treatment, at the initial dye's concentration of 50 mg dm–3 using the alumina-iron doped particles adsorption efficiency was 51.3% and the value of adsorption capacity is 2.64 mg g –1. The adsorption rate was 0.122 g mg–1 min–1.

AB - In this study, zinc phthalocyanine was evaluated as a possible chemical dosimeter for gamma rays at low-medium dose ranges in solution form and PVA film. The zinc phthalocyanine was successfully synthesized with a high yield under microwave irradiation at 200 °C. The calibration curves of absorbance versus dose of gamma irradiation show excellent linearity over a wider dose range (1 - 25kGy). After being irradiated, the samples' color changed from blue to yellow.

AB - The study's primary goal is to determine carbamate pesticide methomyl's kinetic parameters and degradation efficiency from water solution by direct electrochemical oxidation using IrOX anode. Also, define the dependence of the efficiency of methomyl decomposition by direct electrochemical oxidation on the initial concentration of pesticide and electrolyte, applied current, and pH value. The results of methomyl degradation by direct electrochemical oxidation obey the pseudo-first kinetic order. Ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy followed the methomyl concentration during the study. The degradation products were studied using the Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. Also, this study determines the energy consumption and optimal initial conditions. The phytotoxicity of pesticide and degradation products was studied using mung beans.

AB - Adsorption of anthraquinone dye Acid Blue 111 by alumina-iron oxide doped particles prepared by sol-gel method from aqueous solutions was studied. The adsorbent morphology was revealed by FESEM and the crystallographic phase is analyzed by the XRD technique. The effect of adsorbate and adsorbent concentrations, pH value, type of adsorbent and thermodynamic parameters on dye removal by adsorption was studied. The change of dye concentration during the adsorbtion was followed using the UV-Visible spectrophotometer. The change of the adsorbent surface before and after dye removal was observed using the Fourier Transformation-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The adsorption kinetics is in accordance with the pseudo-second-order kinetics model. The Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm models were used to describe the adsorption process. The thermodynamic study of dye adsorption proves the process is spontaneous with exothermic nature. © 2021 Authors. Published by association for ETRAN Society.

AB - Schiff bases, or azomethine compounds, are commonly employed in the fields of organicsynthesis, metal complexes, materials, and engineering. Especially, they have gainedimportance in medicinal researches, considering their antimicrobial, anticancer, antiinflammatory, and antioxidant properties. On the other side, azo dyes are the most significantgroup of synthetic dyes, utilized in textile fiber dyeing. Conjugation of Schiff bases with azocompounds leads to the class of azo-azomethine dyes, which have numerous applicationsrelated to their coloration and biological properties. Viscose is a textile material widely used inthe medicine. Moreover, viscose fiber can be engineered in many ways which are significant inthe development of medical materials. The antioxidant effect is an important feature of medicaltextiles, such as wound dressings. In this work, the microwave-assisted synthesis andcharacterization of novel azo-azomethine dye are reported. The azo-azomethine dye is obtainedby the condensation between arylazo pyridone dye and 4-aminophenol. The structure ofsynthesized dye was determined by ATR-FTIR, NMR, and UV-Vis spectroscopy. Azoazomethine dye was used for dyeing viscose, and the washing fastness of dyed material wasevaluated according to the standard method. The viscose fabrics, before and after washing, wereanalyzed in terms of their color coordinates in the CIELab color space. The antioxidantproperties of azo-azomethine dye and dyed viscose fabrics were examined by the ABTSmethod.

AB - Seven novel azo dyes with 2-pyridone and dihydropyrimidinone moieties have been synthesized and thoroughly characterized. The azo-hydrazone tautomerism has been investigated by experimental and theoretical approaches. The optimizations of geometries have been performed with density functional theory (DFT). The vibrational and NMR spectra were calculated and correlated with experimental ones. Furthermore, quantum chemical descriptors were calculated and MEP maps were plotted to determine biological reactivity of dyes. The antioxidant assay evinced that 5, 6 and 7 are promising antioxidant candidates. In vitro cytotoxic activity was studied against three malignant cell lines: prostate adenocarcinoma (PC-3), lung carcinoma (A549) and chronic myelogenous leukemia (K562), as well as against human normal lung fibroblasts (MRC-5), using MTT assay. Examination of cytotoxic effects on human cancer cell lines showed the concentration dependent cytotoxicity of all investigated compounds. The K562 cells were the most sensitive to the cytotoxicity of the compounds 3, 5 and 6, wherein compound 5 was particularly prominent and selective in cytotoxic action between K562 (24.97 μM) and PC-3 (48.98 μM) cancer cells, and normal MRC-5 (91.11 μM) cells. Moreover, the cell cycle analysis of compound 5 was examined in K562 cells, by flow cytometry, to study its mechanism of anticancer action. Finally, in silico evaluation of physicochemical parameters, druglikeness and ADME properties showed that investigated compounds are orally bioavailable with no permeation to the blood brain barrier.

AB - A new heterocyclic azo dye 5-(2,6-dimethylphenyl)-6-hydroxy-4-methyl-2-oxo-1,2- dihydropyridine-3-carboxamide was synthesized and structurally characterized by elemental analysis, FTIR, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy techniques. These analysis have confirmed that synthesized dye exists in the tinctorial strongest tautomeric form, hydrazone form. The dye is characterized by reflection spectrum, while absorption and emisson spectra are recorded in nine different solvents. The antioxidant activity of the synthesized dye has been chemically tested and has been shown to have great potential as an antioxidant molecule.

AB - Molecular imaging is a relatively new research field, which has demonstrated great potential, especially in clinical oncology – from drug development to cancer early detection. The key of fluorescence imaging is the construction of fluorescent probe which is composed of two parts, the recognition groups to recognize cancer cells, and fluorophores to signal the recognition events. In this research, the structure of new fluorescent azo dye based on 2-oxo-1,2,3,4-tetrahydropyrimidin and 2-pyridone moieties has been reported. The absorption and emission properties of the investigated azo dye have been studied using UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy. The obtained results suggest that studied dye meets the requirements for new green-emitting fluorescent probe, suitable for further application in biomedical researches.

AB - A series of nine 5-(4-substituted phenylazo)-3-amido-6-hydroxy-4-methyl-2-pyridones were synthesized and characterized by FT–IR, 1H and 13C NMR, UV–Vis, and PL spectroscopy. Photophysical properties of the dyes were examined in solvents of various polarities and at different pH values. The solvent effects on the absorbance and emission spectral shift were analyzed using Lippert–Mataga, Reichardt–Dimroth and Kamlet-Taft equations. Moreover, UV–Vis absorption and emission frequencies were correlated with Hammett substituent constants applying the linear free energy relationships. DFT calculations of the investigated dyes were accomplished to determine their structural and electronic properties. © 2019

AB - Photocatalytic degradation of the carbamate insecticide methomyl and its commercial product Lannate-90 in aqueous suspension of TiO2 and ZnO using an Osram ultra-vitalux lamp (315-400 nm) was investigated. The objective of the investigation was to study and compare the rates of photochemical degradation of the pure active compound and its formulated product in order to find out the impact of inert ingredients on degradation processes. The photochemical degradation of pure methomyl was found to be slower than the degradation of its commercial product Lannate-90. Photodegradation was investigated by UV-Vis spectrometry and HPLC, while mineralization was monitored using IC and TOC analyses. Light absorption capabilities of catalysts were characterized by ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy method, while the stability of catalysts was studied by infrared analyses. Degradation products of methomyl and its formulated product were identified by high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) results and tentative photodegradation pathways were proposed.

AB - Thermal degradation properties of 5-(4-substitutedphenylazo)-3-amido-6-hydroxy-4-methyl-2-pyridones and 5-(4-substitutedphenylazo)-3-cyano-6-hydroxy-4-methyl-2-pyridones dyes, differing in electron withdrawing and electron donating substituents in para-position of diazo components were examined. The structure of the synthesized compounds has been confirmed by 1H NMR,13C NMR, FTIR, UV–Vis and XRD analysis techniques. The results obtained with thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) – derivative thermogravimetry (DTG) and differential thermal analysis (DTA) were combined with GC-mass spectral fragmentation to obtain thermal decomposition mechanism. Non-isothermal kinetics were monitored by application of TGA-DTG-DTA. For Kinetic behavior of the investigated dyes during their degradation in an inert atmosphere, Kissinger, Ozawa, Flynn-Wall-Ozawa (FWO) and Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose (KAS) isoconversional (model-free) methods were applied. It was found that different thermal stabilities of investigated dyes are the consequence of their different chemical structures, including diverse substituents. © 2019

AB - In this study, six 6- and 1,6-substituted-3-cyano-4-methyl-2-pyridones were synthesized in a continuous flow microreactor system. The syntheses were realized at room temperature and the obtained results were compared to those achieved within classical syntheses. In order to optimize the continuous flow syntheses and increase the yield of the products, the retention time in the microreactor was varied by changing the flow rates of the reactant solutions. Furthermore, the reaction was optimized for 3-cyano-4,6-dimethyl-2-pyridone and 3-cyano-6-hydroxy-4-methyl-2-pyridone, which are comercially important in the pharmaceutical and dye industries. Both 2-pyridones were obtained in satisfactory yield of circa 60 % in less than 10 min. The resulting compounds were characterized by their melting points, FT-IR, H-1-NMR and UV-Vis spectra. The efficiency of the presented method for the synthesis of 2-pyridone-based molecules has promising potential for industrial production.

AB - Ferric oxide doped alumina particles were prepared via the sol-gel method and their performance as Reactive Orange 16 adsorbent was evaluated. The concentrations of the Reactive Orange 16 were monitored using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer. The effect of Reactive Orange 16 concentration, adsorbent quantity and pH on the solution decolorization efficiency was analyzed. The efficiency of the Reactive Orange 16 removal using ferric oxide alumina doped exceeded 98% in 20 min at pH=3. The experimental data were fitted to the Langmuir equation better than to the Freundlich one. The pseudo-first-order model fits well with the experimental data for adsorption kinetics. © 2018 Authors. Published by the International Institute for the Science of Sintering.

AB - The anthraquinone dye, C.I. Acid Blue 111, was subjected to electrochemical oxidation using an IrOx electrode and sodium sulphate or sodium chloride as electrolytes. The effects of different operating parameters on the rate of dye decolorization, such as applied current, electrolyte concentration, and initial pH were studied. The dye concentration during the study was followed via ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. The changes in the dye molecule during electrochemical oxidation were analyzed by Fourier Transformation-infrared spectroscopy. The level of mineralization after electrochemical oxidation was established by total organic carbon analysis.

AB - TiO2 nanopowders were produced by sol-gel technique using TiCl4 as a starting material. For the preparation of crystalline anatase with developed surface area, this aqueous solution has been mixed with 0.05 M or 0.07 M (NH4)(2)SO4 solution in a temperature-controlled bath. The pH values of the suspension were 7, 8 or 9. According to the x-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis the anatase crystallite sizes were about 12 nm, which coincided with the average particle size revealed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The Raman scattering measurements have shown the presence of a small amount of highly disordered brookite phase in addition to dominant anatase phase with similar nanostructure in all synthesized powders. BET measurements revealed that all synthesized catalysts were fully mesoporous, except the sample synthesized with 0.07 M (NH4)(2)SO4 at pH=9, which had small amount of micropores. The photocatalytic degradation of herbicide Clomazone was carried out for both the pure active substance and as the commercial product (GAMIT 4-EC) under UV irradiation. The best photocatalytic efficiency was obtained for the catalyst with the largest specific surface area, confirming this parameter as crucial for enhanced photocatalytic degradation of the pure active substance and commercial product of herbicide Clomazone.
