AB - The effect of laser (532 nm line of Verdi G) heating during the Raman measurements, on partial decomposition of Bi12SiO20 single crystal, was addressed in this study. The degree of decomposition directly depends on the power density and duration of the laser treatment, which are registered by the phonon Raman spectra. After laser treatment, AFM measurements register additional small spherical islands on the surface. Analysis performed on irradiated and unirradiated samples showed significant changes in transmission spectra, X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern, Verdet constant, magneto-optical property, and absorption coefficient. The material obtained after laser irradiation can be described as specific nanocomposite consisting of bismuth oxide and silicon oxide-based nano-objects (dimensions below 15 nm in diameter), which are arranged in a matrix of Bi12SiO20.

AB - In this paper two methods of preparation of yttrium orthovanadate nanopowders were presented: Solid State Reaction (top – down approach) and Solution Combustion Synthesis (bottom – up approach). For starting structural characterization, X – Ray Powder Diffraction (XPRD) and Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) were used. We report the change in reflection spectra in europium doped YVO4 nanopowders with comparison to its bulk analog. In UV–Vis reflection spectra we consider the change in values of band gap in these structures, after resizing it from bulk to nanomaterial. In Far – Infrared (FIR) reflection spectra, we registered the existence of Surface Optical Phonon (SOP) and different multi – phonon processes which alter the reflection spectra of bulk YVO4. The influence of Eu ions is reflected through multi – phonon processes that occur and are connected with energy transfer from YVO4 lattice to Eu ions. All IR spectra were modeled using classical oscillator model with Drude part added which takes into account the free carrier contribution. Since our samples are distinctively inhomogeneous materials, we use Effective Medium theory in Maxwell Garnett approximation to model its effective dieletric function.

AB - In the present work experimental study of the ZnO@ZnS core-shell nanostructure with an active layer obtained by conversion of zinc oxide powders with H2S is reported. Тhe prepared structures were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and far-infrared spectroscopy. Top surface optical phonon (TSO) in ZnO, characteristic for the cylindrical nano-objects, the surface optical phonon (SOP) mode of ZnS, and SOP modes in ZnO@ZnS core-shell nanostructure are registered. Local mode of oxygen in ZnS and gap mode of sulfur in ZnO are also registered. This result is due to the existence of an active layer in the space between ZnO core and ZnS shell, which is very important for the application of these materials as thermoelectrics. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

AB - The polymer nanocomposite ZnS/Poly (methylmethacrylate) was prepared by the solution casting method and its structural and optical properties were investigated using XRD, SEM, TEM, HRTEM, and Raman spectroscopy. The basic material, ZnS, has the cubic structure and its crystallite size was estimated to be 2.3 nm, which implies that a strong confinement regime is in effect. Analysis of Raman spectra was performed using the fitting procedure based on effective medium theory. As a result, the surface optical phonon (SOP) mode was detected. It was found that the shape and position of the SOP mode depend on the type of the composite. © 2019 Elsevier B.V.

AB - In this paper, we describe synthesis and characterization of YVO 4 and Eu 3+ -doped YVO 4 nanopowders. Two methods of preparation were used—solution combustion synthesis (SCS) and classical ceramic method (CCM)—and compared. Morphology and structure of all samples were characterized with atomic-force microscopy (AFM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and field-emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Raman spectroscopy was used to discuss the isotope-like effect. It is confirmed that doping with Eu ions results in a change of Raman spectra of doped samples—new modes arise, and intensity of existing ones change. Influence of different preparation methods on isotope-like effect is presented with detailed calculations of shifted modes. © 2019 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

AB - The phase changes of MnO nanoparticles under laser-induced heating have been studied. Previous confirmation of the existence of MnO phase was based on the X-ray diffraction measurements. Here, we report the experimental spectra of nonresonant Raman scattering in the range between 100 and 1,600cm(-1), for a sample irradiated with 8 different laser powers. The laser-induced heating has produced change in existing phases in sample, destruction of MnO phase, and creation of MnO2, Mn3O4, and MnOOH phases along with formation of Mn2+ on the sample surface. These phase changes have been confirmed by X-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy measurements.

AB - Structural and optical properties of CdTe thin films were investigated applying atomic force microscopy (AFM), XRD powder technique, Raman spectroscopy and far–infrared spectroscopy. CdTe thin films were prepared by using thermal evaporation technique. In the analysis of the far – infrared reflection spectra, numerical model for calculating the reflectivity coefficient for system which includes films and substrate has been applied. Effective permittivity of film mixture (CdTe and air) was modeled by Maxwell – Garnet approximation. We reveal the existence of surface optical phonon (SOP) mode and coupled plasmon-SOP modes (CPSOPM). © 2018 Elsevier B.V.

AB - Bismuth germanium oxide Bi12GeO20 (BGO) has very interesting electrical, optical and magnetic properties. In order to make devices based on this material more flexible, its powder was used for preparing polymer composites. This study reports investigation of the effects of using different solvents and polymers in preparation of BGO composite on the microstructural and optical behaviour of the resulting material. Preparation of such composites by a solution casting method is described. Poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and polystyrene (PS)) were used as matrix materials and acetone and chloroform as solvents. Their microstructure and the quality of BGO dispersion and deaggregation in polymer matrix were analyzed by SEM, Raman, XRD and optical spectroscopy. The influence of particle size distribution, their shapes, and concentration on the optical transmission is calculated based on Mie scattering theory and discussed, too. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. AB - This paper describes the structural and optical properties of Cu-Se thin films. The surface morphology of thin films was investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Formation of Cu-Se thin films is concluded to proceed unevenly, in the form of islands which later grew into agglomerates. The structural characterization of Cu-Se thin film was investigated using X-ray diffraction pattern (XRD). The presence of two-phase system is observed. One is the solid solution of Cu in Se and the other is low-pressure modification of CuSe2. The Raman spectroscopy was used to identify and quantify the individual phases present in the Cu-Se films. Red shift and asymmetry of Raman mode characteristic for CuSe2 enable us to estimate nanocrystal dimension. In the analysis of the far infrared reflection spectra, numerical model for calculating the reflectivity coefficient of layered system, which includes film with nanocrystalite inclusions (modeled by Maxwell -Garnett approximation) and substrate, has been applied. AB - ZnS nanoparticles were synthesized mechanochemically by high-energy milling, with three different milling times (5 min, 10 min and 20 min). Nitrogen adsorption method was used for examining specific surface area and texture of obtained powders. It was found that all samples are completely mesoporous. The optical properties were studied by far-infrared spectroscopy at room temperature in spectral region of 50-600 cm(-1). The analysis of the far-infrared reflectivity spectra was made by the fitting procedure. The dielectric function of ZnS nanoparticles is modeled as a mixture of homogenous spherical inclusions in air by the Maxwell-Garnet formula. In the analysis of the far-infrared reflection spectra, appearance of combined plasmon-LO phonon modes (CPPMs) with high phonon damping are observed, which causes decrease of coupled plasmon-phonon frequencies. AB - ZnS nanoparticles were synthesized mechanochemically by high-energy milling. In order to investigate influence off milling time to sample properties, samples were produced in three different milling times (5 min, 10 min and 20 min). The morphology of samples has been investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). X-ray diffraction (XRD) investigation of synthesized nanocrystals identified cubic structure. From XRD, ZnS size of crystallites was estimated as 1.9 nm (after 5 min milling time), 2.3 nm (10 min) and 2.4 nm (20 min), implying that we are in strong confinement regime. The optical properties were studied by Raman spectroscopy, in spectral region 100-500 cm(-1), excitation source was 514.5 nm (E-L = 2.41 eV), which means that we are in off resonant regime. Dominant spectral structures, of comparable intensity, are registered in spectral region 130-180 cm(-1), around 265 cm(-1) and around 345 cm(-1). First two are assigned as second-order ZnS modes. A theoretical model of continuum medium was used to calculate frequencies of the confined optical phonons in ZnS. Satisfactory agreement with experimental results was found and mode at 345 cm(-)1 is assigned as LO type phonon confined in ZnS nanocrystal. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - Our work deals with the problem of producing a complex metal-ceramic composite using the processes of internal oxidation (IO) and severe plastic deformation. For this purpose, Cu-Al alloy with 0.4wt.% of Al was used. IO of sample serves in the first step of the processing as a means for attaining a fine dispersion of nanosized oxide particles in the metal matrix. Production technology continues with repeated application of severe plastic deformation (SPD) of the resulting metal-matrix composite to produce the bulk nanoscaled structural material. SPD was carried out with equal channel angular pressing (ECAP), which allowed that the material could be subjected to an intense plastic strain through simple shear. Microstructural characteristics of one phase and multiphase material was studied on internally oxidized Cu with 0.4wt.% of Al sample composed of one phase copper-aluminum solid solution in the core and fine dispersed oxide particles in the same matrix in the mantle region. In this manner AFM, X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy were used. Local structures in plastically deformed samples reflect presence of Cu, CuO, Cu2O, Cu4O3 or Al2O3 structural characteristics, depending on type of sample.

AB - We have synthesized CdS and Cd0.7Mn0.3S nanocrystals with diameters of about 4.5 nm. These materials have been studied using photoluminescence spectroscopy with various excitation energies in the temperature range from 1.8 to 300 K, in magnetic field up to 5T. We registered surface and defect states as well as two Mn2+ energy levels that correspond to Mn2+ ions in two different crystal environments. We proposed the scheme of energy levels and transitions that explain obtained experimental results. (C) 2012 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

AB - Nickel ferrite, NiFe2O4 has been prepared by a soft mechanochemical route from mixture of (1) Ni(OH)(2) and alpha-Fe2O3 and (2) Ni(OH)(2) and Fe(OH)(3) powders in a planetary ball mill for varying duration. Soft mechanochemical reaction leading to formation of the NiFe2O4 spinel phase was followed by X-ray diffraction, Raman and infrared spectroscopy, TGA, scanning and transmission microscopy. The spinel phase formation was first observed after 4 h of milling and its formation was completed after 25 h in the both cases. The synthesized NiFe2O4 ferrite has a nanocrystalline structure with a crystallite size of about 20 and 10 nm respectively for the cases (1) and (2). The final grain size in the system (1) is about twice as large as that in the system (2), what is a consequence of different reaction paths in these two processing routes. There are five Raman and four IR active modes. Mossbauer spectroscopy studies implied on the possible cation distribution between the tetrahedral and octahedral sites in formed NiFe2O4 spinel structure. We were able to estimate the degree of inversion at most 0.82 in the case (1) and 0.66 in the case (2). (c) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

AB - Far-infrared reflectivity spectra, in spectral region 50-600 cm(-1) and temperature region 80-300 K, of CdS and Cd1-xMnxS nanocrystals embedded in hexametaphosphate, are presented. The analysis of the far-infrared experimental reflectivity spectrum was made by the fitting procedure. The Maxwell-Garnet effective medium theory is used for modeling an effective dielectric function as well as to separate respond from nanoparticles. To analyze spectra in CdS omega(TO)(approximate to 238 cm(-1)) to omega(TO)(approximate to 305 cm(-1)) spectral region, quantized dipolar modes in a spherical isotropic material quantum dot (QD) are considered in the framework of a continuum model. As to the mechanical boundary conditions rigid sphere is concerned. Experimental far-infrared reflectivity spectra of our samples are in general agreement with the predictions of this model. Experimentally registered and through fitting procedure located features for CdS nanoparticles in spectral region below CdS omega(TO) at: approximate to 102 cm(-1), approximate to 135 cm(-1), approximate to 170 cm(-1) and approximate to 210 cm(-1) are associated to defect induced modes, especially to defects located near the surface of CdS QD. In region over CdS omega(LO), modes are identified as multiphonons. In Cd1-xMnxS QD spectra new reflectivity peaks are at: approximate to 85 cm(-1), approximate to 110 cm(-1) and approximate to 180 cm(-1) in spectral region below CdS omega(TO), approximate to 270 cm(-1) inside CdS omega(TO)-omega(LO) spectral region and approximate to 356 cm(-1) and approximate to 376 cm(-1) in region over CdS omega(LO). First two registered modes are associated to both mass and force constant defects at the surface, and rest four modes are consequence of MnS phases present in the sample. The mixture was activated for varying duration. Soft mechanochemical reaction leading to formation of the MnFe2O4 spinel phase was followed by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, scanning and transmission microscopy and magnetization measurements. The spinel phase formation was first observed after 12 h of milling and its formation was completed after 25 h in both cases. The synthesized MnFe2O4 ferrite has a nanocrystalline structure with a crystallite size of about 40 and 50 nm respectively for cases (a) and (b). There are five Raman active modes. Measurements after 25 h of milling show magnetization values of 70.4 emu/g and 71.1 emu/g respectively for cases (a) and (b). In order to understand better the whole process of phase formation, Mossbauer measurements were done. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - The nanocomposite consisting of PbS quantum dots with average diameter of 26 A and polyvinyl alcohol was characterized using photoluminescence and far-infrared spectroscopy. Photoluminescence spectra of nanocomposite, measured in temperature range from 8 to 280 K, consists of broad peak which spans the energy range from 1.2 to 2.1 eV and can be connected with trap states inside the band gap. Far-infrared measurements are consistent with theoretical calculations that include mechanical boundary conditions at the quantum dot - host interface. Observed peak at 90 cm(-1) can be assigned to coupled modes with l(p) = 1, while broad peak at 275 cm(-1) is above any lattice frequency and is close to sum of the frequencies of the l(p) = 0 acoustic and l(p) = 0 coupled optical mode of PbS quantum dots. AB - Bismuth titanate, Bi4Ti3O12 powders were prepared by mechanically assisted synthesis from their oxides. The diameter of obtained particles depends on time of milling. In order to understand the grain size effects on the crystal structure we measured X-ray, TEM analysis and Raman spectra. The effect of mechanical treatment on the grain size is quite evident: as the milling time increases (3, 6, 12 h), the powder becomes more activated and grain size decrease (7.3, 7.2, 6.9 nm). With reducing the grain size, quantum effects at the Raman spectra, is reflected in the mode position change against balk crystal. And also, coagulation of each line appears, as well as a significant asymmetry of certain modes. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - In this work, the results of structural modification of fullerene thin films bombarded by multiple charged nitrogen ions have been reported. The properties of as-deposited and irraditated fullerene thin films have been investigated by Raman and FTIR spectroscopy and AFM analysis. After irradiation by multiple charged nitrogen ions (N(2+), N(5+)) new bondings in fullerene films have been formed and the amorphicity has been enhanced at higher doses. Raman and FTIR spectra showed structural changes of deposited films depending on the energy and implantation dose. AFM analysis showed that the ion beam had destroyed the surface ordering. At lower doses the surface order has been characterized by carbon clusters of 500 nm. At higher doses significantly smaller clusters have been formed (200 nm).

AB - In this paper, results of structural modification of fullerene thin films by single and multiple charged boron ions (B+, B3+) are presented. The applied ion energies were in the range of 15-45 keV. The characterization of as-deposited and irradiated specimens has been performed by atomic force microscopy, Raman and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and UV/vis spectrophotometry. The results of Raman analysis have shown the formation of amorphous layer after irradiation of fullerene thin films. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy has confirmed the formation of new B-C bonds in irradiated films at higher fluences (2 x 10(16) cm(-2)). The morphology of bombarded films has been changed significantly. The optical band gap was found to be reduced from 1.7 to 1.06 eV for irradiated films by B3+ ions and 0.7 eV for irradiated films by B+ ions. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - The formation of amorphous carbon nitride under bombardment of fullerene thin films by single and multiple charged nitrogen ions is presented in this paper. The characterization of a new amorphous carbon nitride phase was performed by Raman, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, low angle x-ray diffraction and UV/Vis spectrophotometry. The structural modification in fullerene films after bombardment by single and multiple charged nitrogen ions has been examined by atomic force microscopy. It was found that the surface ordering has been changed significantly depending on the charge of the used ions. The optical band gap was found to be varied from 1.7 to 1.3 eV for bombarded films by N5+ ions and 1.4 eV for irradiated films by N+ ions.

abstract = "The formation of amorphous carbon nitride under bombardment of fullerene thin films by single and multiple charged nitrogen ions is presented in this paper. The optical band gap was found to be varied from 1.7 to 1.3 eV for bombarded films by N5+ ions and 1.4 eV for irradiated films by N+ ions.",

AB - A nanocomposite consisting of lead sulfide (PbS) nanoparticles (NPs) with average diameter of 26 angstrom, according to absorption threshold shift, and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was characterized using far-infrared absorption spectroscopy. The experimental results are consistent with theoretical calculations that include proper mechanical boundary conditions at the nanocrystal-host interface.
