Potential grouping of nodes induced by higher-order structures in complex networks

AB  - Complex networks display an organization of elements into nontrivial structures at versatile inherent scales, imposing challenges on a more complete understanding of their behavior. The interest of the research presented here is in the characterization of potential mesoscale structures as building blocks of generalized communities in complex networks, with an integrated property that goes beyond the pairwise collections of nodes. For this purpose, a simplicial complex is obtained from a mathematical graph, and indirectly from time series, producing the so-called clique complex from the complex network. As the higher-order organizational structures are naturally embedded in the hierarchical strata of a simplicial complex, the relationships between aggregation of nodes are stored in the higher-order combinatorial Laplacian. Based on the postulate that aggregation of nodes represents integrated configuration of information, the observability parameter is defined for the characterization of potential configurations, computed from the entries of the combinatorial Laplacian matrix. The framework introduced here is used to characterize nontrivial inherent organizational patterns embedded in two real-world complex networks and three complex networks obtained from heart rate time series recordings of three different subject’s meditative states

Quantifying self-organization in fusion plasmas

AB  - A multifaceted framework for understanding self-organization in fusion plasma dynamics is presented which concurrently manages several important issues related to the nonlinear and multiscale phenomena involved, namely,(1) it chooses the optimal template wavelet for the analysis of temporal or spatio-temporal plasma dynamics, (2) it detects parameter values at which bifurcations occur, (3) it quantifies complexity and self-organization, (4) it enables short-term prediction of nonlinear dynamics, and (5) it extracts coherent structures in turbulence by separating them from the incoherent component. The first two aspects including the detection of changes in the dynamics of a nonlinear system are illustrated by analyzing Stimulated Raman Scattering in a bounded, weakly dissipative plasma. Self-organization in the fusion plasma is quantitatively analyzed based on the numerical simulations of the Gyrokinetic-Vlasov (GKV) model of plasma dynamics. The parameters for the standard and inward shifted magnetic configurations, relevant for the Large Helical Device, were used in order to quantitatively compare self-organization and complexity in the two configurations. Finally, self-organization is analyzed for three different confinement regimes of the MAST device. Published by AIP Publishing.

Persistent topological features of dynamical systems

AB  - Inspired by an early work of Muldoon et al., Physica D 65, 1-16 (1993), we present a general method for constructing simplicial complex from observed time series of dynamical systems based on the delay coordinate reconstruction procedure. The obtained simplicial complex preserves all pertinent topological features of the reconstructed phase space, and it may be analyzed from topological, combinatorial, and algebraic aspects. In focus of this study is the computation of homology of the invariant set of some well known dynamical systems that display chaotic behavior. Persistent homology of simplicial complex and its relationship with the embedding dimensions are examined by studying the lifetime of topological features and topological noise. The consistency of topological properties for different dynamic regimes and embedding dimensions is examined. The obtained results shed new light on the topological properties of the reconstructed phase space and open up new possibilities for application of advanced topological methods. The method presented here may be used as a generic method for constructing simplicial complex from a scalar time series that has a number of advantages compared to the mapping of the same time series to a complex network. Topology of Innovation Spaces in the Knowledge Networks Emerging through Questions-And-Answers

AB  - The communication processes of knowledge creation represent a particular class of human dynamics where the expertise of individuals plays a substantial role, thus offering a unique possibility to study the structure of knowledge networks from online data. Here, we use the empirical evidence from questions-and-answers in mathematics to analyse the emergence of the network of knowledge contents (or tags) as the individual experts use them in the process. After removing extra edges from the network-associated graph, we apply the methods of algebraic topology of graphs to examine the structure of higher-order combinatorial spaces in networks for four consecutive time intervals. We find that the ranking distributions of the suitably scaled topological dimensions of nodes fall into a unique curve for all time intervals and filtering levels, suggesting a robust architecture of knowledge networks. Moreover, these networks preserve the logical structure of knowledge within emergent communities of nodes, labeled according to a standard mathematical classification scheme. Further, we investigate the appearance of new contents over time and their innovative combinations, which expand the knowledge network. In each network, we identify an innovation channel as a subgraph of triangles and larger simplices to which new tags attach. Our results show that the increasing topological complexity of the innovation channels contributes to networks architecture over different time periods, and is consistent with temporal correlations of the occurrence of new tags. The methodology applies to a wide class of data with the suitable temporal resolution and clearly identified knowledge-content units.

AB  - In online communications, patterns of conduct of individual actors and use of emotions in the process can lead to a complex social graph exhibiting multilayered structure and meso-scopic communities. Using simplicial complexes representation of graphs, we investigate in-depth topology of the online social network constructed from MySpace dialogs which exhibits original community structure. A simulation of emotion spreading in this network leads to the identification of two emotion-propagating layers. Three topological measures are introduced, referred to as the structure vectors, which quantify graphs architecture at different dimension levels. Notably, structures emerging through shared links, triangles and tetrahedral faces, frequently occur and range from tree-like to maximal 5-cliques and their respective complexes. On the other hand, the structures which spread only negative or only positive emotion messages appear to have much simpler topology consisting of links and triangles. The nodes structure vector represents the number of simplices at each topology level in which the node resides and the total number of such simplices determines what we define as the nodes topological dimension. The presented results suggest that the nodes topological dimension provides a suitable measure of the social capital which measures the actors ability to act as a broker in compact communities, the so called Simmelian brokerage. We also generalize the results to a wider class of computer-generated networks. Investigating components of the nodes vector over network layers reveals that same nodes develop different socio-emotional relations and that the influential nodes build social capital by combining their connections in different layers. AB  - Measurements of differential cross sections for J/psi production in p + Pb collisions at root S-NN= 5.02 TeV at the CERN Large Hadron Collider with the ATLAS detector are presented. The data set used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 28.1 nb(-1). The J/psi mesons are reconstructed in the dimuon decay channel over the transverse momentum range 8 LT PT LT 30 GeV and over the center-of-mass rapidity range -2.87 LT y* LT 1.94. Prompt J/psi are separated from J/psi resulting from b-hadron decays through an analysis of the distance between the J/psi decay vertex and the event primary vertex. The differential cross section for production of nonprompt J/psi is compared to a FONLL calculation that does not include nuclear effects. Forward-backward production ratios are presented and compared to theoretical predictions. These results complement previously published results by covering a region of higher transverse momentum and more central rapidity. They thus constrain the kinematic dependence of nuclear modifications of charmonium and b-quark production in p + Pb collisions.

AB  - Correlations between the elliptic or triangular flow coefficients v(m) (m = 2 or 3) and other flow harmonics v(n) (n = 2 to 5) are measured using root S-NN = 2.76 TeV Pb + Pb collision data collected in 2010 by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 7 mu b(-1). The v(m)-v(n) correlations aremeasured in midrapidity as a function of centrality, and, for events within the same centrality interval, as a function of event ellipticity or triangularity defined in a forward rapidity region. For events within the same centrality interval, v(3) is found to be anticorrelated with v(2) and this anticorrelation is consistent with similar anticorrelations between the corresponding eccentricities, epsilon(2) and epsilon(3). However, it is observed that v(4) increases strongly with v(2), and v(5) increases strongly with both v(2) and v(3). The trend and strength of the v(m) -v(n) correlations for n = 4 and 5 are found to disagree with epsilon(m)-epsilon(n) correlations predicted by initial-geometry models. Instead, these correlations are found to be consistent with the combined effects of a linear contribution to v(n) and a nonlinear term that is a function of v(2)(2) or of v(2)v(3), as predicted by hydrodynamic models. A simple two-component fit is used to separate these two contributions. The extracted linear and nonlinear contributions to v(4) and v(5) are found to be consistent with previously measured event-plane correlations.

AB  - Geometric realization of an opinion is considered as a simplex and the opinion space of a group of individuals is a simplicial complex whose topological features are monitored in the process of opinion formation. The agents are physically located at the nodes of a scale-free and a random network. Social interactions include all concepts of social dynamics present in the mainstream models, augmented by four additional interaction mechanisms which depend on the local properties of opinions and their overlapping properties. The results pertaining to the formation of consensus are of particular interest. An analogy with quantum mechanical pure states is established through the application of the high-dimensional combinatorial Laplacian. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Quantifying self-organization with optimal wavelets

AB  - An optimal wavelet basis is used to develop a quantitative, experimentally applicable criterion for self-organization. The choice of the optimal wavelet is based on the model of selforganization in the wavelet tree. The framework of the model is founded on the wavelet-domain hidden Markov model and the optimal wavelet basis criterion for self-organization. The principle assumes increase in statistical complexity considered as the information content necessary for maximally accurate prediction of the systems dynamics. The causal states and the wavelet machine (w-machine) are defined in analogy with the epsilon-machine constructed as the unique, minimal, predictive model of the process. The method, presented here for the one-dimensional data, concurrently performs superior denoising and may be easily generalized to higher dimensions. Copyright (C) EPLA, 2013

AB  - A practical multipurpose implementation of hybrid renewable energy system completely located within the building and including building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) solar power energy source is presented. The system uses solar photovoltaic electricity generated by the building skin to produce hydrogen for fuel-cells, which in turn, when converted to energy in fuel cells, may be used to supply additional power to the building (or fuel cell vehicles) when solar power is not sufficient, for example at night or in periods of low insolation. Electricity generated from 8.2 kW(p) BIPV array optimally supplies the electrolyser near the maximum power point level of the BIPV array. To further optimize hydrogen production, the electrolyser is connected to the local electrical utility, and DC power is provided to the electrolyser through a custom on-board DC power supply that supplements the BIPV array. Performance of the complete installation is optimized to provide continual production at the optimal efficiency level of hydrogen production at constant power. The results obtained from the system operation have shown excellent voltage and current regulation during operation of the electrolyser. The project shows the potential for development of similar building integrated hybrid systems elsewhere with possibilities for inclusion of additional renewable energy sources and added functionality. We explore the properties of spectra of combinatorial Laplacian operator of simplicial complexes and show its relationship with connectivity properties of the Q-vector and with connectivities of cliques in the simplicial clique complex. We demonstrate the need for higher order analysis in complex networks and compare the results with ordinary graph spectra. Methods and results are obtained using social network of the Zachary karate club.

Density fluctuation in the MAST device are considered and contrasted to local velocity measurements of an air fl w into round free jet. Large deviation (multifractal) spectra are used to characterize global features revealing different energy cascade mechanisms in each of systems. A transformation invariant zero-crossing function is shown to be more reliable indicator of stable equilibrium states then the probability density function. In particular the zero-crossing function detects L-H transitions and recognizes ELMs as catastropohic events in the sense of stochastic catastrophy theory. The method may be of significan importance in the analysis and control of edge plasma turbulence.

AB  - The interest in real world systems such as particular types of social (the network of acquaintances between individuals, collaboration of scientists, collaboration between actors in who acted in same movies, ...), biological (the network of metabolic pathways, genetic regulatory network, food web, protein interaction network, ...), technological (Internet, Power Grid, the telephone network, ...), informational (the network of citations between academic papers, World Wide Web, ...), etc. systems was in recent years remarkable [1], [2]. The above mentioned systems are characterized by two sets - a set of items and a set of connections or relationships between them. This kind of system we call network. The overall connectivity of the whole system is not simple, regardless of pairwise connections of items, and far from regularity. Hence, we call these physical systems complex networks, and they induced the development of complex networks theory. In the essence of this theory was the attempt to make classification of such systems with respect to the underlying structure, as well as to understand organizational principles which lead to formation of characteristic structures. Different kinds of dynamical processes on real world systems (such as deletion/addition of elements, and/or connections; information flow, etc.) takes place, and properties of these dynamical processes are influenced by the underlying structure. Hence, the notion of structure is certainly one of central concepts of complex networks theory. The most usual property for characterizing a structure is the distribution of number of connections which items have. Since the beginning of its development, the complex networks theory relied on the concepts of graph theory. This reliance is understandable since the treatment of real world networks as sets of entities and their pairwise connections was natural and easiest to represent mathematically as a graph. On the other hand, the branch of mathematics called combinatorial algebraic topology [3], [4] introduced us the concepts of simplices and simplicial complexes, as objects which have local connectivity properties not so simple as those in graph theory. Let us in short make some parallels between graphs and simplicial complexes. While the main entity in graph is a node, in simplicial complex main entity is simplex, which is defined as a set of vertices. A pair of nodes in graph are connected by link, while in simplicial complex two simplices are connected if sets which define them have some vertices in common (these shared common vertices we call face). From this short comparison we can anticipate that simplices form connectivity structure which is more complex than graph. Furthermore, connectivity, as well as structural properties, can be considered from three aspects: combinatorial, algebraic, and topological. Hence, at this point we came to the main idea of this paper, which is the following: can we represent physical complex network as simplicial complex, and if we can, what are the statistical mechanics properties of measures which emerge from combinatorial, algebraic, and topological aspect, analogously to the statistical mechanics approach to graph representation of complex network? Furthermore, if we can do all this, another problem arises: can we make some relationship between properties of complex networks which emerges from two representation - graph and simplicial complex representation?

A new topological invariant, persistent homology, is determined and presented as a parameterized version of a Betti number. Complex networks with distinct degree distributions exhibit distinct persistent topological features. Persistent topological attributes, shown to be related to the robust quality of networks, also reflect the deficiency in certain connectivity properties of networks. Random networks, networks with exponential connectivity distribution and scale-free networks were considered for homological persistency analysis.

The population of agents is situated at the sites of three types of scale-free networks of different sizes which display two important characteristics of real-world social networks: clustering and modularity. A new method of opinion formation is presented using advantages of simplicial complex approach. The dynamics is twofold: the agents change their opinions and new opinions are created. Topological invariants of simplicial complexes reveal relationships among opinions, particularly those which survive.

The retained zero-crossing set enables insight into various aspects of edge plasma turbulence. AB  - Effects of multihelicity confinement magnetic fields on turbulent transport and zonal flows are investigated by means of spatiotemporal analysis of gyrokinetic Vlasov simulation results for the ion temperature gradient turbulence, where the standard and the inward-shifted configurations of the Large Helical Device are considered. The analysis of simulation results demonstrates that fluctuations of electrostatic potential for zonal flows exhibit spatiotemporal chaos in both configurations. However, the intensity of chaos found is considerably decreased in the inward-shifted configuration consistent with improved confinement. Simplicial complexes of networks and their statistical properties

AB  - Topological, algebraic and combinatorial properties of simplicial complexes which are constructed from networks (graphs) are examined from the statistical point of view. We show that basic statistical features of scale free networks are preserved by topological invariants of simplicial complexes and similarly statistical properties pertaining to topological invariants of other types of networks are preserved as well. Implications and advantages of such an approach to various research areas involving network concepts are discussed.

AB  - The intermittency in the edge turbulence of the magnetic confinement devices, caused by large-scale events with high radial velocity, has been the object of several recent studies. It is well known that bursty behavior in the scrape-off layer of magnetically confined plasmas, and the departure from random diffusion models is caused by intermittent large-scale plasma structures radially convected at high speed. Recently performed statistical analysis of plasma density fluctuations have demonstrated universal features of intermittent phenomena in plasma turbulence in the sense that they originate and have the same properties in many devices with distinct configurations. We extend the universal features of turbulence to Laplace distributions of derivatives of plasma density flucutations and show the properties of distributions for various confinement regimes. We further demonstrate that universal features are not complete by performing multifractal analysis which reveals unique features for each device and for each confinement regime. AB  - A multifractal analysis based on evaluation and interpretation of large deviation spectra is applied to plasma edge turbulence data from different devices (MAST and Tore Supra). It is demonstrated that in spite of some universal features there are unique characteristics for each device as well as for different confinement regimes. In the second part of the exposition the issue of estimating the variable power law behavior of spectral densities is addressed. The analysis of this issue is performed using fractional Brownian motion (fBm) as the underlying stochastic model whose parameters are estimated locally in time by wavelet scale spectra. In this manner information about the inertial range as well as variability of the fBm parameters is obtained giving more information important for understanding edge turbulence and intermittency.

Integration of third order ordinary differential equations possessing two-parameter symmetry group by Lies method

AB  - The solution of a class of third order ordinary differential equations possessing two parameter Lie symmetry group is obtained by group theoretic means. It is shown that reduction to quadratures is possible according to two scenarios: (1) if upon first reduction of order the obtained second order ordinary differential equation besides the inherited point symmetry acquires at least one more new point symmetry (possibly a hidden symmetry of Type II). (2) First, reduction paths of the fourth order differential equations with four parameter symmetry group leading to the first order equation possessing one known (inherited) symmetry are constructed. Then, reduction paths along which a third order equation possessing two-parameter symmetry group appears are singled out and followed until a first order equation possessing one known (inherited) symmetry are obtained.
