AB - The focus of this study is on the preparation and characterization of magnetic nanocomposite membranes for gas separation. Magnetic nanoparticles of strontium ferrite (SrFe12O19) were incorporated into ethylcellulose via solvent casting method, in order to promote oxygen diffusion against nitrogen. The influence of the nanoparticle content on the mechanical and separation properties of the nanocompositewas investigatedusing micro Vickers method and tensile test. In order to identify the structures formed by membrane processing, various analyzes were performed, such as scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and infrared spectroscopy with Fourier transformation (FTIR). The permeability of magnetic nanocomposite membranes was tested by monitoring the output pressure change of the nitrogen and oxygen mixtures, as well as pure nitrogen. It has been established that all of the starting components have remained intact during processing, indicating that an appropriate processing method was chosen. Nanocomposite membranes with a higher content of magnetic nanoparticles have shown a significant improvement in mechanical properties compared to pure ethylcellulose, with high permeability. These findings have shown that nanocomposite membranes based on ethylcellulose are an excellent candidate for gas separation.

AB - This study presents preparation and characterization of ethyl cellulose based nanocomposites. Successful use of simple solvent casting technique provided nanocomposites with high loads of barium ferrite magnetic nanopowder in the polymer matrix, promising significant improvement of mechanical properties. Investigation of morphology revealed formation of agglomerates that are still on nanoscopic level. Nanocomposite thin films with a higher content of the magnetic powder showed substantial enhancement of break strength, elongation and microhardness compared to the pure ethyl cellulose, which was the primary aim of this research.

AB - Polyethersulfone membranes with integrated negatively-charged hydrogel of crosslinked poly(acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid) were prepared by a combination of a liquid phase inversion process with photopolymerization and crosslinking of functional monomers included in the casting solution. A designed experiment was conducted to select the optimal composition for preparing membranes with a sufficient degree of swelling and ion exchange capacity. Scanning electron microscopy images revealed an ultrafine hybrid structure with an interconnected network of submicron particles embedded within the microporous polyethersulfone support. An intramembrane diffusion model was used to describe kinetics of heavy metal sorption by these hydrogels and the calculated apparent diffusion coefficients were 2–3 times larger than in commercial ion-exchange resins. Equilibrium sorption of heavy metals was described using a semi-empirical Langmuir model.

AB - Hydrogels containing strong acid groups have been used in the past for the removal of heavy metals. Unfortunately such hydrogels exhibit poor mechanical properties and are generally difficult to handle. In this work we prepared asymmetric membranes incorporatingcross-linked 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propane sulfonic acid (AMPS) hydrogel by combining photopolymerization and liquid phase inversion. An experimental design measuring water content and ion-exchange capacity of these membranes was used to select the optimal membrane composition for the removal of Pb2+, Ni2+, and Cd2+ ions from aqueous solutions. The results demonstrated fast sorption kinetics and high capacity for the investigated metals.

AB - Thermal characterization and kinetic analysis of non-isothermal decomposition process of Bauxite red mud were carried out using thermogravimetry (TG), derivative thermogravimetry (DTG), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), differential thermal analysis (DTA) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). It was found that the investigated decomposition was a complex heterogeneous process, which included two main decomposition stages and one sub-stage. The overall decomposition process consisted of the series of parallel and competitive reactions, which originated from the decomposition of various chemical species and solid-state transformations. This behavior was confirmed by the appearance of different forms of density distribution functions of apparent activation energy values. Furthermore, the conversion range of 0.10 LT = alpha LT = 0.30, with a constant value of the apparent activation energy (146.4 kJ mol(-1)) for the second stage of the overall process, belongs to calcite decomposition, which takes place through a two-dimensional diffusion mechanism. AB - One of the more important developments in magnetic materials, polymer bonded magnets, have opened a new world of application opportunities. The Nd-Fe-B/polymer composite materials offer an excellent combination of strong magnetic and dynamical-mechanical properties. However, the transition temperatures of filler and matrix should be selected carefully considering the future application. Uniform particle distribution and good adhesion between Nd-Fe-B powder particles and polymer are essential for the quality of the composite, while stiffness of polymer matrix is one of the influencing factors as well. The damping properties of Nd-Fe-B/polymer composites with 15 wt.%, 50 wt.% and 75 wt.% of Nd-Fe-B powder were studied by dynamic mechanical analysis and compared with a pure polymer sample. Thermal stability was analyzed using a simultaneous differential scanning calorimetric and thermogravimetric analysis technique.

AB - For the purpose of better understanding of the effect of different Nd content on the magnetic properties of three types of commercial Nd-Fe-B alloys with 10-12 wt% Nd (Nd-low), 21-25 wt% (Nd-stoich.), and 26-29 wt% Nd (Nd-rich) were simultaneously analyzed using X-Ray and Fe-57 Mossbauer spectroscopy analysis. The observation was based on correlation of starting chemical composition with phase composition and magnetic properties of the alloys in optimized magnetic state.

AB - Phase transformations and magnetic properties of multiphase Nd4.3Fe76.2B19.5 alloy were investigated in the temperature range of heat treatment 600-700 degrees C. The influence of different heat treatment regimes was observed by correlation of phase composition and measured magnetic properties. The heat treatment regime, which provided the microstructure that improves exchange interactions between grains of soft and hard magnetic phases and consequently enhances magnetic properties, was defined and discussed. For optimized magnetic alloy grain size of the present phases Fe3B, Nd2Fe14B and alpha-Fe was calculated by size-strain analysis of X-ray powder diffraction data. Calculated mean grain size was on a nanoscale, below 30 nm.
