AB - Crosslinked polyurethanes (PUs) based on hyperbranched polyester and poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS), which are thermosetting polymers, are one of the most representative products in the coating applications. To enhance the biomedical properties of PUs, we have attempted to incorporate PDMS as soft segments and silver-ferrite as nanoparticles in order to prepared PU nanocomposites (PU NCs). Silver ferrite nanoparticles were incorporated into crosslinked polyurethanes (PU NCs) with different soft poly(dimethylsiloxane) segments, via in situ polymerization. Herein, we report the nanomechanical properties, hydrophobicity and antifungal activities of PU NCs based on poly(dimethylsiloxane), 4,4’-methylenediphenyl diisocyanate and hyperbranched polyester of the second pseudogeneration, with different soft (PDMS) segment content. The nanomechanical properties of PU NCs were investigated by nanoindentation measurements, while the hydrophobicity of PU NCs was measured by water absorption properties. The fungicidal activities of PU NCs were evaluated against Candida albicans and Candida parapsilosis. PU NCs with lower soft segment content exhibited selective and good antifungal activity toward the tested fungi due to higher hydrophilicity and higher amount of Ag+ ion released. The selective fungicidal activity and low cytotoxicity of PU NCs with good nanomechanical properties ensure it is a candidate as coatings for medical devices.

AB - Mefenamic acid and indomethacin, medicaments belonging to the group of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents, were determined separately and simultaneously at anodically prepared BDDE. Differential pulse voltammetry was used to establish simple and fast analytical procedure based on electrooxidation of mefenamic acid at 0.6 V and indomethacin at 1.0 V (and 1.1 V). At optimal conditions, it was suitable for highly sensitive and selective determination of these compounds with LODs comparable to previously reported modified electrodes. Additionally, considering the importance of these compounds, we proposed precise and accurate quantification of these species based on green and simple pre-treatable electrochemical sensor. The effect of interfering agents (tablet ingredients and vitamins) was appeared to be negligibly confirming a favourable selectivity of the method. The proposed method was analytically applied by simultaneously determining mefenamic acid and indomethacin in pharmaceutical formulations. © 2020 Elsevier B.V.

AB - Chlorine dioxide (ClO2) degradation of the organophosphorus pesticides azamethiphos (AZA) and dimethoate (DM) (10 mg/L) in deionized water and in Sava River water was investigated for the first time. Pesticide degradation was studied in terms of ClO2 level (5 and 10 mg/L), degradation duration (0.5, 1, 2, 3, 6, and 24 h), pH (3.00, 7.00, and 9.00), and under light/dark conditions in deionized water. Degradation was monitored using high-performance liquid chromatography. Gas chromatography coupled with triple quadrupole mass detector was used to identify degradation products of pesticides. Total organic carbon was measured to determine the extent of mineralization after pesticide degradation. Real river water was used under recommended conditions to study the influence of organic matter on pesticide degradation. High degradation efficiency (88–100% for AZA and 85–98% for DM) was achieved in deionized water under various conditions, proving the flexibility of ClO2 degradation for the examined organophosphorus pesticides. In Sava River water, however, extended treatment duration achieved lower degradation efficiency, so ClO2 oxidized both the pesticides and dissolved organic matter in parallel. After degradation, AZA produced four identified products (6-chlorooxazolo[4,5-b]pyridin-2(3H)-one; O,O,S-trimethyl phosphorothioate; 6-chloro-3-(hydroxymethyl)oxazolo[4,5-b]pyridin-2(3H)-one; O,O-dimethyl S-hydrogen phosphorothioate) and DM produced three (O,O-dimethyl S-(2-(methylamino)-2-oxoethyl) phosphorothioate; e.g., omethoate; S-(2-(methylamino)-2-oxoethyl) O,O-dihydrogen phosphorothioate; O,O,S-trimethyl phosphorodithioate). Simple pesticide degradation mechanisms were deduced. Daphnia magna toxicity tests showed degradation products were less toxic than parent compounds. These results contribute to our understanding of the multiple influences that organophosphorus pesticides and their degradation products have on environmental ecosystems and to improving pesticide removal processes from water.

AB - The aim of this study was to investigate, analyze, and compare applied techniques suitable for achieving efficient removal of organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs) (malathion and fenitrothion) from aqueous solutions and analyze the degradation products and processes. Pesticide degradation efficiency (%) was monitored by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) equipped with a photodiode array detector (DAD), while mineralization degree was determined by total organic carbon analysis (TOC). Daphnia magna was used for screening the environmental safety aspects of the degradation methods, i.e., for assessing the toxicity of solutions obtained after degradation. Additionally, a surface river water was utilized to examine the likely influence of organic matter on the pesticides’ degradation. Pesticide degradation products were identified using gas chromatography with a triple quadrupole mass detector (GC-MS/MS) as well as ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography coupled with a linear ion trap, Orbitrap mass spectrometer (UHPLC-LTQ Orbitrap MS), and a simple pesticide degradation mechanism is proposed. Removal of pesticides from water using chlorine dioxide was successful, resulting in high degradation efficiency (98% for malathion and 81% for fenitrothion). Partial mineralization was achieved, and Daphnia magna mortality decreased in the waters containing degradation products (compared with the parent pesticides), indicating that the solutions formed were less toxic than the parent pesticides. Lower degradation rates (80% for malathion and 72% for fenitrothion) in Sava River water were measured, indicating the influence of the organic matter contained in this naturally occurring surface water. The results prove that chlorine dioxide could be used as an agent for successful removal of these OPPs from water.

AB - Bentazone (BZ) is selective contact-past herbicide with suspected reproductive toxicity potential for human due to possible contamination of ground and surface waters. This work presents simple, rapid, sensitive and accurate determination of bentazone at unmodified boron-doped diamond electrode, using differential pulse voltammetry in Britton-Robinson buffer (pH 4, oxidation peak at 1.0 V). Under optimized DPV conditions linear calibration curve was obtained for range of 2 to 100 mu M, with a detection limit of 0.5 mu M. The effect of possible interfering agents is negligible, confirming good selectivity of the method. The method was successfully applied to determination of bentazone in spiked river water samples. This electrochemical determination of bentazone represents a favorable alternative to other used time-consuming and expensive analytical techniques and procedures.

AB - In this paper, a new simple and environmentally friendly treatment technique for obtaining polymer nanocomposites with appropriate dielectric properties has been presented. Sheets of isotactic polypropylene and atactic polystyrene were immersed in 3 saturated water solutions of alkali metal salts (LiCl, NaCl, and KCl) at 2 fixed temperatures (23°C and 90°C), and 3 DC electrical potentials (+4 kV, −4 kV, and ground potential) were applied. A quantification of alkali metals in the polymer sheets was conducted by inductively coupled plasma optic emission spectrometry. The obtained concentration values were from 7.38·10−9 mol/cm3to 1.25·10−7 mol/cm3. The qualitative analysis of potassium distribution in the polymer matrix was conducted by time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry cross-sectional record. The relative dielectric constant (ε′) of samples was investigated in the frequency range from 20 Hz to 9 MHz at the constant temperature of 22°C. Stable values of ε′ in fully measured frequency range were observed for both pure and treated samples. Next, the results of the dielectric spectroscopy measurements were compared and established the kind of treatment that provided the highest value of ε′. The relationship between the concentrations of alkali metals and the values of relative dielectric constant was determined for the samples obtained by a treatment at 90°C and +4 kV.

AB - The degradation of two sulfonylurea herbicides, nicosulfuron and thifensulfuron methyl in water by chlorine dioxide, was studied for the first time in this paper. In order to examine the optimal parameters for degradation of both herbicides, degradation was investigated under light or dark conditions with different amount of chlorine dioxide, different degradation periods, and at different pH values. Degradation efficiency of herbicides was monitored using high-performance liquid chromatography with photodiode array detection (HPLC-DAD). The degradation products were analyzed by gas chromatography with triple quadrupole mass detector (GC–QQQ). Three products were identified after degradation of nicosulfuron and two products after degradation of thifensulfuron methyl. Total organic analysis (TOC) gave insight into some differences in degradation mechanisms and degrees of mineralization after degradation of the herbicides using chlorine dioxide. A simple mechanism of herbicide degradation was proposed. Acute toxicity tests were performed on the products produced after degradation with chlorine dioxide, and the results showed that the degradation products were less toxic than the parent compounds. The findings of the present study are very useful for the treatment of wastewaters contaminated with herbicides. © 2018, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

AB - This work present a new approach for the detection of relatively new herbicide pethoxamid (POA), a first electrochemical behavior and determination based on its oxidation on boron-doped diamond electrode in Britton-Robinson buffer solution at pH 4. Square wave voltammetric technique was used for quantification of POA at anodic potential of 1.35 V vs reference Ag/AgCl electrode. The proposed electroanalytical method is operational in the linear working range from 3 to 100 μM of POA with a limit of detection of 1.37 μM. The developed analytical procedure was successfully tested for determination of this herbicide in standard/spiked river water samples and commercial herbicide Successor T SE/spiked river water samples, offering a simple, fast and inexpensive alternative way of pesticide determining to chromatographic methods employed for this purpose.

AB - In this work, for the first time we proposed electrochemical behavior and development of an analytical procedure for quantification of pesticide clomazone. Electrochemical behavior of clomazone's at boron-doped diamond electrode is characterized with irreversible oxidation at potential of around 1.6 V, in Britton-Robinson buffer solution at pH 2. It was found that potential of this oxidation was not pH dependent excluding presence of proton in the electrochemical reaction. Square wave voltammetry method was the most appropriate for clomazone quantification and proposed procedure was successfully applied for determination of clomazone in river water samples. Obtained parameters, detection limit of 0.21 mu M and working linear range from 1 to 100 mu M and satisfied selectivity can indicate that presented results open new field in research of this group of pesticides and offer possible replacement to the sophisticated and expensive chromatographic methods.

AB - In this work, the electrochemical behaviour and the subsequent development of an analytical procedure for quantification of pesticide azamethiphos, using boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrode are reported for the first time. It was found that azamethiphos electrochemical behaviour is irreversible oxidation at the potential of around 1.70 V, in 1 M nitric acid (pH 0). Also, it was found that potential of this oxidation was not pH dependent which can be attributed to the no proton involvement in electrochemical reaction on the electrode surface. The square wave voltammetric method was most appropriate for azamethiphos quantification. Under optimised experimental conditions, linear working range from 2 to 100 µM was estimated with the detection limit of 0.45 µM. Negligible effect of the possible interfering compound was observed. The obtained results show that the developed analytical methodology can be an adequate replacement for the, up to date, used methods for detection of organophosphorous pesticide. © 2018, © 2018 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

AB - Macroporous copolymers of poly[(glycidyl methacrylate)-co-(ethylene glycol dimethacrylate)] (PGME) with various crosslinker (ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) concentrations and porosity parameters and additionally functionalized with hexamethylene diamine (PGME-HD) were tested as potential Cr(VI) oxyanion sorbents from aqueous solutions. Kinetics of Cr(VI) sorption was investigated in the temperature range 298-343 K and the results were fitted to chemical reaction and particle diffusion models. The Cr(VI) sorption obeys the pseudo-second-order model with definite influence of pore diffusion. A temperature rise promotes chromium removal, with a maximum experimental uptake capacity of 4.21 mmol g(-1) at 343 K for the sample with the highest amino group concentration. Equilibrium data were analysed with Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin adsorption isotherm models. Thermodynamic parameters, i.e. Gibbs free energy (G(0)), enthalpy (H-0) and entropy change (S-0) and activation energy of sorption (E-a), were calculated. The Cr(VI) adsorption onto PGME-HD was found to be spontaneous and endothermic, with increased randomness in the system. Desorption experiments show that chromium anion sorption was reversible and the PGME-HD sample GMA 60 HD was easily regenerated with 0.1 mol L-1 NaOH up to 90% recovery in the fourth sorption/desorption cycle. In the fifth cycle, a substantial sorption loss of 37% was observed. (c) 2016 Society of Chemical Industry

AB - Novel macroporous functionalized copolymers with different cross-linker concentrations and porosity parameters were synthesized by reaction of the pendant epoxy groups of poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) (poly(GMA-co-EGDMA)) with hexamethylene diamine 1,3-bis(3-aminopropyl)tetramethyldisiloxane, and alpha,omega-diaminopropyl poly(dimethylsiloxane). The copolymers were prepared in forms, of spherical beads and characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR); C-13 and Si-29 solid-state NMR, mercury porosimetry, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Copolymers prepared with the higher cross-linker concentrations have better thermal stability, higher glass transition temperatures; higher specific surface areas, and smaller pore diameters that correspond to half Of the pore volumes. Out results show that functionalization significantly changed porosity parameters, mechanism of thermal degradation; and increased thermal, stability in comparison with the initial copolymers. These macroporous copolymers could potentially have many applications, i.e. for sorption of heavy and precious metals or as Material for gas chromatography columns.

AB - Novel poly(urethane-ester-siloxane) networks, based on hydroxypropyl terminated poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS), 4,4-methylenediphenyl diisocyanate, and hyperbranched polyesters (HBPs) of the second and third pseudogenerations, were synthesized by two-step polymerization. The effects of the PDMS content and pseudogeneration number of HBPs on the structural, thermomechanical, thermal, and surface properties of polyurethanes were investigated. Thermomechanical and thermal properties of polyurethanes and FTIR, SAXS, and SEM results indicated good microphase separated structure. SAXS data suggested that the difference in the HBP pseudogeneration number affects only the global properties of the structure and is much less pronounced than the dependence on the PDMS content, while local properties depend only on the PDMS content. Surface characterization of samples indicated the slightly amphiphilic nature of polyurethanes. The results revealed that the synthesized polyurethanes have good thermal, thermomechanical, and surface properties, which can be tuned and adjusted for coating application by changing the PDMS content or type of the HBP.

The effect of the EO-PDMS-EO content and functionality of the applied crosslinking agent on the morphology and surface properties of the prepared poly(urethane-ester-siloxane)s was investigated by FTIR spectroscopy, small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and water absorption measurement. Different techniques (FTIR peak deconvolution, SAXS and AFM) revealed that decrease of the crosslinking agent functionality and EO-PDMS-EO content promotes microphase separation in the synthesized poly(urethane-ester-siloxane)s. SEM analysis and water absorption experiments showed that, due to the hydrophobic character of EO-PDMS-EO and its ability to migrate to the surface of poly(urethane-ester-siloxane)s, samples synthesized with higher EO-PDMS-EO content and crosslinking agents of lower functionality had more hydrophobic surfaces and better waterproof performances. The obtained results indicate that the synthesis of poly(urethane-ester-siloxane)s based on EO-PDMS-EO and Boltorn (R) hyperbranched polyesters leads to the creation of networks with interesting morphological and surface properties, which can be easily tailored by changing the content of EO-PDMS-EO segment or functionality of hyperbranched polyester.

AB - Six polyurethane networks were synthesized from Boltorn (R) hyperbranched polyester of the second pseudo generation, alpha,omega-dihydroxy-(ethylene oxide-poly(dimethylsiloxane)-ethylene oxide) (EO-PDMS-EO) and 4,4-methylenediphenyl diisocyanate. The effect of the EO-PDMS-EO content on the properties of prepared polyurethanes was investigated by dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), swelling measurements, water contact angle and water absorption. Different techniques (FTIR peak deconvolution, DMTA and SEM) revealed that decrease of EO-PDMS-EO content promotes microphase separation in the synthesized polyurethanes. Samples synthesized with higher EO-PDMS-EO content have more hydrophobic surface and better waterproof performances, but lower crosslinking density. TGA results suggest that thermal stability of the synthesized polyurethane networks in nitrogen is significantly affected by the mutual influence of the crosslinking density and EO-PDMS-EO content. The results obtained in this work indicate that the synthesis of polyurethanes based on hyperbranched polyester and EO-PDMS-EO leads to the creation of networks with good thermal, thermomechanical and surface properties. AB - A series of six polyurethane (PU) networks was synthesized from Boltorn (R) hydroxy-functional hyperbranched polyester (HBP) of the second pseudo generation as a cross-linking agent, alpha,omega-dihydroxy-(ethylene oxide-poly(dimethylsiloxane)-ethylene oxide) (EO-PDMS-EO) and 4,4-methylenediphenyl diisocyanate, by two-step polymerization in solution. Each sample of the prepared PUs had different EO-PDMS-EO content. The chemical structure of the synthesized networks was analyzed by FTIR spectroscopy. The influence of the EO-PDMS-EO content and type of the solvent on the swelling behavior of the PUs in 2-propanol and toluene was investigated. During the swelling measurements, a certain amount of sal fractions was extracted from the PUs by solvents. According to the H-1-NMR results, sal fractions were mainly composed of the soluble hyperbranched PU, formed during the polymerization by partial modification of the end hydroxyl groups of HBP with NCO-terminated prepolymer synthesized in the first step of the reaction. Chains of the so reacted prepolymer can then fold back and form cyclic products by reaction of the free -NCO group from the NCO-terminated prepolymer with free -OH group of HBP. As the EO-PDMS-EO content increases the amount of the sol fractions and swelling degree also increased, indicating that networks with lower EO-PDMS-EO content are more cross-linked and have higher solvent resistance.

AB - Novel polyurethanes (PUs) were synthesized using hydroxy-terminated hyperbranched polyester (BH-20) and 4,4-methylenediphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) as hard segments and hydroxy-terminated ethylene oxide-poly(dimethylsiloxane)-ethylene oxide triblock copolymer (PDMS-EO) as soft segment, with soft segment content ranging from 30 to 60 wt %. The PUs were synthesized by two-step solution polymerization method. The influence of the soft segment content on the structure, swelling behavior and thermal properties of PUs was investigated. According to the results obtained by swelling measurements, the increase of the hard segment content resulted in the increase of the crosslinking density of synthesized samples. DSC results showed that the glass transition temperatures increase from 36 to 65A degrees C with increasing hard segment content. It was demonstrated using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) that thermal stability of investigated PUs increases with increase of the soft PDMS-EO content. This was concluded from the temperatures corresponding to the 10 wt % loss, which represents the beginning of thermal degradation of samples.

AB - A series of novel thermoplastic urethane-siloxane copolymers (TPUSs) based on a alpha,omega-dihydroxy-[poly(epsilon-caprolactone)-b-poly(dimethylsiloxane)-b-poly(epsilon-caprolactone)] (alpha,omega-dihydroxy-PCL-PDMS-PCL) triblock. copolymer, 4,4-methylenediphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) and 1,4-butanediol (BD) was synthesized. The effects of the content (9-63 mass %) of hard urethane segments and their degree of polymerization on the properties of the segmented TPUSs were investigated. The structure, composition and hard segment degree of polymerization of the hard segments were examined using (1)H- and quantitative (13)C-NMR spectroscopy. The degree of crystallinity of the synthesized copolymers was determined using wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS). The surface properties were evaluated by measuring the water contact angle and water absorption. In the series of the TPUSs, the average degree of polymerization of the hard segments was varied from 1.2 to 14.4 MDI-BD units. It was found that average values from 3.8 to 14.4 MDI-BD units were effective segment lengths for crystallization of hard segments, which resulted in an increase in the degree of microphase separation of the copolymers. Spherulite-like superstructures were observed in copolymer films by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), which are believed to arise from the crystallization of the hard segments and/or PCL segments, depending on the content of the hard segments. The surface of the copolymers became more hydrophobic with increasing weight fraction of PDMS. The synthesized copolymers based on a PCL-PDMS-PCL segment showed good thermal stability, which increased with increasing content of soft PDMS segments, as was confirmed by the value of the starting temperature of thermal degradation.

AB - In this paper, two samples of polyurethane (PU) crosslinked with hydroxy-functonal hyperbranched aliphatic polyester of the second pseudo generation were investigated. For the synthesis of these crosslinked PUs two different macrodiols were used: poly(tetramethyleneoxide) (PTMO) for PUPTMO and ethylene oxide-poly(dimethylsiloxane)-ethylene oxide (PDMS-EO) for PUPDMS-EO sample, Synthesized samples behave as elastomers and have yellow color. Obtained results show that swelling degree of the sample PUPDMS-EO in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidinon (NMP) determined at room temperature is higher than for the sample PUPTMO. It has been also observed that thermal properties of these polyurethane networks can be changed by incorporation of siloxane sequences in their structure.
