AB - Nanoparticle materials have become a promising candidate for a new kind of storage media based on thermally induced memory effects due to the possibility to tailor their magnetic properties and behaviour. In this study, we have investigated whether the magnetic memory effects could appear at high, industry accessible temperatures including the possibility of thermal data inscription. Investigated iron oxide nanoparticles were synthesized by poliol method, which has been modified in order to allow control of particle agglomeration and consequently magnetic properties. Structure, morphology and the degree of nanoparticle agglomeration were studied by X-Ray diffraction, Transmission Electron Microscopy and Dynamic Light Scattering techniques, while magnetic properties as well as memory effects were measured on a commercial SQUID-based magnetometer. Results of the study confirmed that in super spin glass magnetite nanoparticles, magnetic memory effects can be observed up to 200 K which represents much higher temperatures in comparison to those achieved in spin glasses and other glassy materials. Procedures of writing and reading (inscribing and retrieving) of digital information in such a material were demonstrated and discussed in details.

AB - Synthesis, spectroscopic characterizations and single crystal X-ray structure of a new dinuclear Copper(II) complex of the form [Cu2L(µ-O-OAc)(OAc)2](PF6) are reported. The molecular structure of the complex indicates that acetate ions coordinate to metals in different types, as a unidentate ligand, as a chelating ligand and in arrangement involving chelation and bridging. The metal centers in this complex are five coordinated with two different geometries (trigonal bipyramid and square pyramidal). Magnetic measurements show the presence of a strong Cu–Cu antiferromagnetic interaction. Moreover, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to deeper analysis of the structure and vibrational properties of the synthesized complex. An interesting result is failure of DFT and second order Møller-Plesset perturbation (MP2) methods for prediction of antiferromagnetic coupling in the synthesized complex which introduces its as a new challenging material for future computational chemistry investigations. © 2021 Elsevier B.V.

AB - A series of MgxFe3-xO₄ (x ═ 0-1) nanoparticles was synthesized in order to prepare novel MgxFe3-xO₄/glassy carbon modified electrodes. Effects of magnesium content (x) on the analytical performance of the modified electrodes in the detection of gallic acid were evaluated. It was found that magnesium concentration and crystallite/particle size of the prepared nanoparticles play significant roles in the sensing properties of modified electrodes. The increase of magnesium concentration up to the value of x ═ 0.4 in MgxFe3-xO₄/glassy carbon paste was accompanied by an increase of the corresponding oxidation current of gallic acid. However, further growth of x value caused decline of the obtained oxidation current. An electroanalytical procedure was established, and the analytical performance of the proposed Mg0.4Fe2.6O₄/glassy carbon paste electrode was monitored using previously optimized experimental conditions. A working linear range from 1-39 µM gallic acid was obtained with detection limit of 0.29 µM. According to these results, the developed procedure can be applied for detection of low concentrations of gallic acid with satisfactory selectivity in the presence of some common naturally occurring compounds. Experimental results indicate that the developed procedure could be a novel approach in the detection of antioxidant, overcoming some known disadvantages such as passivation, and could be a promising replacement for sophisticated chromatographic methods.

AB - Magnetic anisotropy in pentagonal bipyramidal complexes of Co(II) (1 and 2), Fe(III) (3 and 4), and Ni(II) (5) with a 2,2′-[2,6-pyridinediylbis(ethylidyne-1-hydrazinyl-2-ylidene)]bis[N,N,N-trimethyl-2-oxoethanaminium] equatorial ligand and isothiocyanato axial ligands has been investigated by magnetic susceptibility measurements, powder X-band electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, Mössbauer spectroscopy, ab initio, and ligand-field density functional theory (LFDFT) calculations. The studied complexes display three distinct types of magnetic anisotropy. Co(II) complexes (1 and 2) show an easy plane anisotropy with large and positive D values and negligible rhombicity. The Ni(II) complex (5) has uniaxial magnetic anisotropy with a negative D value. Fe(III) complexes (3 and 4) have small zero-field splitting (ZFS) parameters. Theoretical modeling is used to rationalize the magnetic anisotropy in these systems and to identify the most important excited states that are responsible for the zero-field splitting. These excitations are a consequence of the electronic structure of the central metal ion in ideal pentagonal bipyramidal coordination.

AB - We performed structural and magnetic investigation of Fe3O4/OA nanoparticles prepared by solvothermal method. Based on XRD, TEM and FTIR examination, investigated sample contained monodisperse, 5 nm-sized spherical magnetite nanoparticles coated with oleic acid. Magnetic measurement of the hysteretic curves at 5 K in zero-field cooled (ZFC) and field-cooled (FC) regime confirmed presence of exchange bias effect. ZFC/FC measurements were performed in applied magnetic fields: 10 Oe, 100 Oe, 200 Oe, 500 Oe and 1000 Oe. Zero-field cooled magnetization curves recorded in 10 Oe and 100 Oe exhibited behavior characteristic for low coercivity Nanomaterials. Same sample exposed to the ZFC/FC measurement protocol in 200 Oe, 500 Oe and 1000 Oe showed increase in ZFC magnetization in the certain temperature range. The observed feature is attributed to the local changes in the magnetite electronic structure, occurred through the spin reorientation process. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l.

AB - Abstract: ε-Fe2O3 phase is recognized as an attractive material, in both technological and scientific point of view, since it can achieve very high room-temperature coercivity (10–20 kOe). In this paper, multi-phase samples Fe2O3/SiO2 with slightly different Fe/Si molar ratio were produced by sol–gel synthesis route. The obtained samples were characterized by various experimental techniques including XRD, TA, FTIR, and SQUID (DC and AC magnetic measurements). It was found that both samples consisted of α-Fe2O3 and ε‑Fe2O3 phases embedded in the silica matrix, and showed very similar structural and magnetic properties, except that displayed significantly different room-temperature intrinsic coercivity field values: HciS1 = 14.3 kOe and HciS2 = 7.5 kOe. We have discussed possible origin of thus high intrinsic coercivity field variation. © 2019, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

AB - Abstract: Origin of the intrinsic coercivity field variations observed by hysteretic measurements established by Nikolic et al. was investigated in detail by ZFC/FC measurements. In this study, magnetic behavior of the samples is further examined by calculation of the ZFC Mn(T) and Mn(H) first derivatives. Performed study showed that the main contribution to the measured coercivity comes from the ε-Fe2O3 particles, characterized by Hci = 24 kOe, although both samples posses SPM ε-Fe2O3 fraction. As a result, Hci values of the samples are differed dependent on the quantity of the SPM ε-Fe2O3 particles in the sample. Mechanism of the intrisic coercivity field variations is discussed. © 2019, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

AB - Magnetic and non-magnetic macroporous crosslinked copolymers of glycidyl methacrylate and trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate were prepared by suspension copolymerization and functionalized with diethylenetriamine. The samples were characterized by mercury porosimetry, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis (FTIR-ATR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and SQUID magnetometry. The FTIR-ATR analysis of synthesized magnetic nanocomposites confirmed the presence of magnetite and successful amino-functionalization. Non-functionalized and amino-functionalized nanocomposites exhibited superparamagnetic behavior at 300 K, with a saturation magnetization of 5.0 emu/g and 2.9 emu/g, respectively. TEM analysis of the magnetic nanocomposite has shown that magnetic nanoparticles were homogeneously dispersed in the polymer matrix. It was demonstrated that incorporation of magnetic nanoparticles enhanced the thermal stability of the magnetic nanocomposite in comparison to the initial non-magnetic macroporous copolymer. © 2019, Association of Chemists and Chemical Engineers of Serbia. AB - Ferrofluids based on magnesium substituted magnetite nanoparticles MgxFe3−xO4 (x = 0.1; 0.2; 0.4) were synthesised by a chemical co-precipitation method. Their physical properties have been compared with those of the magnetite based ferrofluid obtained by the same synthesis route. Both XRD and TEM studies showed particle size decrease with the increased Mg content while DLS experiments pointed to the more prominent aggregation of Mg-containing nanoparticles. Magnetic properties investigation conducted on the powder (i.e. dried) specimens showed decrease of magnetization values with increased Mg content except for the lowest concentration of x = 0.1 where substantial saturation magnetization rise of about 40% was recorded at room temperature. Heating abilities of the studied ferrofluids under the applied AC fields (SAR values) also showed decreasing trend with the increased Mg content even for x = 0.1 sample despite its elevated magnetization value. This trend has been understood as a consequence of the changed intrinsic nanoparticle properties such as size and magnetic anisotropy, as well as contribution of a collective behaviour due to an increased nanoparticle aggregation in Mg-doped systems.

AB - Iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles with diameters d, 7 nm LT = d LT = 12 nm, were synthesized by thermal decomposition of Fe(acac)(3). Different experimental conditions, keeping constant concetration of Fe ions in solvent, showed that the heating rates is the most important parameter determining the final particle size. Use of two different solvents, 1-eicosene and 1-octadecene, yielded similar nanoparticle sizes (7.1 nm LT = d LT = 7.5 nm), but different magnetic anisotropies. All samples were superparamagnetic at room temperature. Spin disordering was inferred in samples coated with trioctylphosphine oxide (TOPO) co-ligand in addition to oleic acid and oleyamine. The heating ability of similar to 12 nm-sized nanoparticles dispersed in hexane under alternating magnetic fields (3.98 kA/m LT = H-0 LT = 23.87 kA/m; 229.3 kHz LT = f LT = 828 kHz) has been studied, finding a nearly quadratic dependence upon H-0, as expected from the linear response theory. AB - Nano iron oxides have been intensively investigated due to their various potential biomedical applications. ε-Fe2O3 phase exerted internal coercivity value up to ~20 kOe, high Curie temperature (Tc= 510 K), and magnetoelectric character. Accordingly, epsilon phase is recognized as a suitable material for medical spintronic biosensors production, that present important part for the lab-on-a-chip systems. Noteworthy, ε-Fe2O3 phase exerts peculiar magnetic behavior. To get better insight into the magnetism of this material, ε-Fe2O3/SiO2 sample was prepared by the combination of the sol-gel synthesis and microemulsion method (Tann=1050 °C, tann= 4h). Afterwards, the sample was exposed to post-annealing treatment at 100 °C and 200 °C. Synthesized material was preliminary examined by XRD and SQUID techniques. Coercivity changes, induced by the post-annealing temperature oscillations, were monitored by hysteretic measurements. Sample annealed at 1050 °C for 4h, showed coercivity ~20 kOe. The same sample performed to the post-annealing treatment at 100 °C, exerted significantly decreased coercivity (~1600 Oe). Further rise of the post-annealing temperature (200 °C) resulted in the increased coercivity ~15 kOe. Obtained study showed that there is insufficient knowledge concerning the ε-Fe2O3 coercivity changes of the polymorph. The more detailed investigation will be conducted, in order to advance the control of the epsilon phase magnetic properties. © 2018 TANGER Ltd. All Rights Reserved.

AB - The magnetic nanocomposites (MNCs), used as adsorbents for Cd2+ ions, were prepared by a co-precipitation method using both the untreated natural (SEP) and the partially acid-activated (ASEP) sepiolites as supports for magnetite. The synthesis conditions differed as follows: NaOH or NH3 was added in the SEP or the ASEP suspension before or after the addition of Fe3 and Fe2+. The SEP-based MNCs prepared using NaOH had a lower magnetization, but higher adsorption capacities than the MNCs synthesized using NH3. The order of the mixing of the reagents had a small influence on the properties of SEP-based MNCs, especially when NaOH was used for the synthesis. Due to acidity of the surface functional groups of the ASEP, the magnetic composite could be synthesized only when NH3 was added in the suspension of ASEP having Fe3+ and Fe2+ ions. Despite of the worse dispersibility of the magnetic particles, the adsorption capacityof the ASEP-based composite was higher than of the MNC with SEP prepared by the same procedure. All the MNCs showed a superparamagnetic behavior at room temperature and the adsorption capacities were higher than of pure compounds. The adsorption of Cd2+ on the composites was best fitted with the Sips model, which suggested the chemisorption on the heterogeneous surface at energetically non-uniform sites until a monolayer was formed. AB - Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) are of immense interest for diagnostic and therapeutic applications in medicine. Design and development of new iron oxide-based MNPs for such applications is of rather limited breadth without reliable and sensitive methods to determine their levels in body tissues. Commonly used methods, such as ICP, are quite problematic, due to the inability to decipher the origin of the detected iron, i.e. whether it originates from the MNPs or endogenous from tissues and bodily fluids. One of the approaches to overcome this problem and to increase reliability of tracing MNPs is to partially substitute iron ions in the MNPs with Er. Here, we report on the development of citric add coated (Fe,Er)(3)O-4 nanopartides and characterization of their physico-chemical and biological properties by utilization of various complementary approaches. The synthesized MNPs had a narrow (6-7 nm) size distribution, as consistently seen in atomic pair distribution function, transmission electron microscopy, and DC magnetization measurements. The particles were found to be superparamagnetic, with a pronounced maximum in measured zero-field cooled magnetization at around 90 K. Reduction in saturation magnetization due to incorporation of 1.7% Er3+ into the Fe3O4 matrix was clearly observed. From the biological standpoint, citric acid coated (Fe,Er)(3)O-4 NPs were found to induce low toxicity both in human cell fibroblasts and in zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos. Biodistribution pattern of the MNPs after intravenous administration in healthy Wistar rats was followed by the radiotracer method, revealing that Y-90-labeled MNPs were predominantly found in liver (7533% ID), followed by lungs (16.70% ID) and spleen (2.83% ID). Quantitative agreement with these observations was obtained by ICP-MS elemental analysis using Er as the detected tracer. Based on the favorable physical, chemical and biological characteristics, citric add coated (Fe,Er)(3)O-4 MNPs could be further considered for the potential application as a diagnostic and/or therapeutic agent. This work also demonstrates that combined application of these techniques is a promising tool for studies of pharmacokinetics of the new MNPs in complex biological systems. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. AB - Magnetic properties of Fe2O3/SiO2 samples were studied after being produced by sol-gel synthesis and formation of epsilon-Fe2O3 polymorph. Samples were thermally treated, using different annealing temperatures and annealing times. The size and morphological characteristics of the iron oxide nanoparticles were examined using a TEM microscope. We used the ellipticity of shapes, which is a measure of how much the shape of a nanoparticle differs from a perfect ellipse, in order to quantitatively describe morphological properties of nanoparticles. Coercivity measurements were used to identify and monitor the formation of the epsilon-iron oxide phase during the thermal treatments (annealing). Coercivity values were in the range from 1.2 to 15.4 kOe, which is in accordance with previous experience regarding the existence of epsilon-Fe2O3. We have determined the optimal formation conditions for the epsilon-Fe2O3 polymorph (t=1050 degrees C for 7 h, H-c=15.4 kOe), as well as the narrow temperature interval (1050-1060 C) in which the polymorph abruptly vanished (H-c=2300 Oe), on the basis of results of the magnetic properties. The threshold temperature for the epsilon-Fe2O3 phase transformation was measured as 1060 degrees C. We found that different annealing temperatures and annealing times significantly affected magnetic properties of the examined samples.

AB - Several Fe2O3/SiO2 nanostructures were synthesized by the combination of the microemulsion and a sol-gel methods. Based on X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and magnetic measurements (giant coercivity similar to 2.13 T) we identified epsilon-Fe2O3 (hard magnet) as the dominant crystalline phase. TEM analysis showed a wide size distribution of iron oxide nanoparticles (from 4 to 50 nm) with various morphologies (spherical, ellipsoidal and rod-like). We quantitatively described (computational analysis, MATLAB code) morphological properties of nanoparticles using the ellipticity of the shapes. The as-synthesized hard magnetic material was subjected to a post-annealing treatment at different temperatures (200, 500, 750, 1000 and 1100 degrees C) in order to investigate stability, formation and transformation of the epsilon-Fe2O3 polymorph. We found decreasing coercivity in the thermally treated samples up to the temperature of 750 degrees C (H-c=1245 Oe), followed by an observation of a surprising jump in coercivity H-c similar to 1.5 T after post-annealing at 1000 degrees C. We conclude that the re-formation of the epsilon-Fe2O3 structure during post-annealing at 1000 degrees C is the origin of the observed phenomena. The phase transformation epsilon-Fe2O3 - GT alpha-Fe2O3 and crystallization of amorphous silica in quartz and cristobalite were observed in the sample treated at 1100 degrees C.

AB - Magnetic macroporous crosslinked copolymer glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) samples with different magnetite content were prepared by suspension copolymerization and functionalized with diethylene triamine. Samples were characterized by elemental analysis, mercury porosimetry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, SQUID magnetometry and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The selected amino-functionalized sample was tested as a potential sorbent for the Mo(VI) and Re(VII) oxyanions from aqueous solutions. The influence of pH, ionic strength and possible interfering of cations and anions was investigated. Equilibrium data were analyzed with Langmuir, Freundlich and Tempkin adsorption isotherm models. Sorption studies were carried out in a batch competitive experiments, in the pH range 1-8, at 298 K. Obtained results indicate that 92% of Re(VII) and 98% of Mo(VI) were sorbed at pH 2. AB - Bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3) is one of the most studied multiferroic system with a large number of published articles. This is mainly because BiFeO3 material possesses both ferromagnetic and ferroelectric properties observed at room temperature, which opens great possibility for industrial and technological applications. Well crystallized single-crystal BiFeO3 nanopowder has been successfully synthesized with the hydrothermal method. The phase composition of the synthesized samples was determined by the x-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, and the results showed that synthesized material crystallizes in the space group R3c as alpha-BiFeO3 phase, which was confirmed by the previous experiments. In addition, a structure prediction has been performed and 11 additional BiFeO3 modifications have been proposed. In the next phase, an ab initio optimization of predicted structures has been performed and the structure of the gamma-form has been elucidated. Furthermore, electronic and magnetic properties of BiFeO3 were investigated using combination of experimental and theoretical methods. Spectroscopic Ellipsometry has been used to study electronic properties of BiFeO3, while magnetic behavior of synthesized material was investigated by SQUID. Finally, theoretical studies were performed using a full potential linearized augmented plane-waves plus local orbital (FP(L)APW+lo) method, based on density functional theory (DFT).

AB - A novel magnetic macroporous poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) (mPGME) was prepared by suspension copolymerization and functionalized with diethylenetriamine (mPGME-deta). The samples were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis, mercury porosimetry, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and SQUID magnetometry. The sorption behavior of mPGME-deta toward pertechnetate ions (TcO4-) from aqueous solution was studied. Experimental results indicated relatively fast TcO4- sorption kinetics that depends on pH and ionic strength, with a high removal efficiency of 99% within 180 min in the pH range 3.0-5.0. The pseudo-second-order model yielded the best fit for the kinetic data.

AB - The electrochemical exfoliation of graphite to give one-atom-thick graphene with desirable properties is a green, cost-effective method for high-yield graphene production. This paper presents the results of electrochemical exfoliation of two different graphite precursors under an applied direct current voltage of +12 V. The used characterization techniques (elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy) showed that the exfoliated powder is highly functionalized with a low carbon/oxygen content that is similar to graphene oxide. The exfoliated graphene sheets dispersed in N,N-dimethylformamide were deposited on ano-discs by vacuum filtration and transferred to glass ceramic substrates. The thermal annealing of the as-deposited films at 600 degrees C for 30 minutes resulted in an increase in the carbon/oxygen ratio by more than 3 fold and a decrease in the sheet resistance by 25%. The lowest values for the sheet resistance of the annealed graphene thin films were in the range of 0.32 +/- 0.04 to 0.84 +/- 0.1 kohm sq(-1) depending on the graphite source that was used.

AB - We present a modified solution combustion synthesis method and measured magnetic properties of CaMnO3-delta (calcium manganite). The structure, morphology and magnetic properties of CaMnO3-delta were investigated by XRPD (X-ray powder diffraction), TEM (transmission electron microscopy), HRTEM (high-resolution transmission electron microscopy) and SQUID (superconducting quantum interference device). The XRPD study revealed that the prepared sample is composed of pure calcium manganite phase. The TEM and HRTEM images showed well-crystallized particles with a rough surface and particle size of about 100 nm. Magnetization measurements revealed magnetic transition at T-N=120 K, which corresponds to the Neel temperature of calcium manganite. Paramagnetic behavior was measured above the TN temperature. High irreversibility between the ZFC (zero-field cooled) and the FC (field cooled) curves below TN were observed. In addition, the separation between ZFC and FC curves increased with increasing magnetic field. We also show that the temperature values at the maxima of the ZFC curves are insensitive to the value of the applied DC magnetic field and to the frequency of the AC magnetic field. Magnetic measurements also indicate the presence of a strong antiferromagnetic exchange coupling with a Curie-Weiss temperature theta=-436 K. Magnetic moment of 4.33 mu(B) per Mn ion is determined from the Curie constant. This value of the magnetic moment suggests that Mn3+ and Mn4+ ions exist in the sample. Measurements of the magnetic hysteresis properties indicate a contribution of a ferromagnetic-like component in the sample. This is revealed by large coercivity and high remanence magnetization below TN. In this work we also studied field-cooled (up to 5 T) hysteresis properties of the sample. The detailed analysis of these results suggests a minor hysteresis loop behavior and no exchange bias.

AB - Nanocrystalline manganites Ca1−xGdxMnO3 (x=0.05, 0.1, 0.15, and 0.2) were synthesized by a modified glycine-nitrate procedure and subjected to a systematic investigation regarding the effects of calcination and sintering on their structural, microstructural and magnetic properties. Thermal treatments of the green bodies were carried out by the conventional sintering (CS) method and the effects were monitored by different experimental techniques (XRD, ICP, FTIR, SEM, and EDS). The obtained results showed that induced structural/microstructural changes were not simple functions of the dopant concentration x and that they were influenced by different material-specific processes. Magnetism of the final bulk powders have been investigated by SQUID-magnetometry and correlated with samples composition and structural/microstructural properties.

AB - The synthesis of the NH2-MIL-101(Al) Metal-Organic Framework (MOF) with bis(hydrotris(pyrazolyl)borato)iron(II), [Fe(HB(pz)(3))(2)], added to the reaction medium yielded [Fe(HB(pz)(3))(2)]"NH2-MIL101(Al) encapsulation products, denoted as S"Ms, in the course of a bottle-around-the-ship assembly. [Fe(HB(pz)(3))(2)] is a spin-crossover (SCO) compound with a gradual spin transition at 290-440 K for the bulk material (repeated cycles), associated with a pronounced colour change from the red low spin (LS) state to the white high-spin (HS) state. The identity of S"Ms, with a maximum loading of the iron complex at similar to 11 wt% (0.16 molecules per Al3OL3 moiety), was confirmed by PXRD and spectroscopic measurements. The entrapped complex, which is stable in air and cannot be removed by vacuum drying, is confined in the cages of the framework. N-2 and CO2 gas adsorption measurements on the dry S"M composite with different iron complex loadings confirm the absence of most of the initial NH2-MIL-101(Al) porosity. The S"M composite material demonstrates a gradual thermally induced transition from the red low-spin (LS) state to the light yellow HS state, associated with the colour of the matrix, chiefly over the range 300-450 K, which is close to the 290-440 K temperature range for [Fe(HB(pz)(3))(2)]. The thermally induced HS form of S"M does not return to the LS upon cooling to room temperature, and the metastable HS form relaxes only very slowly, which becomes noticeable only after weeks of storage. Rapid and almost complete relaxation and decrease of magnetic moment for up to similar to 97% of the whole sweep could be triggered by the addition of n-hexane, as evidenced by the change of colour and magnetic measurements. Via mechanical stress akin to the action of capillary forces, the adsorbed liquid effectively amplifies the otherwise very weak matrix effect by increasing the effective local pressure imposed on the transiting molecules, thus favouring even further the LS state. The immersion of the dried composites into practically any typical solvents, including MeOH, DMSO, DMF, (PrOH)-Pr-i, BuOH, t-BuOH, THF, ethylacetate, CH2Cl2, CHCl3 CCl4, toluene, mesitylene, and cyclohexane, also induces a spin state change, which is evidenced by the change of colour. The effect is fully reversible: the metastable HS state could be reinstated upon drying the sample at elevated temperature and subsequent cooling. The materials were thoroughly characterized by AAS, PXRD, gas sorption analysis, IR spectroscopy, magnetic measurements, and optical reflectivity measurements. Therefore, a novel MOF-based material with isolated SCO units is proposed, which demonstrates a salient relaxative solvent assisted matrix-effect on metastable entrapped sites, potentially suitable for light-driven single-unit addressability.
