AB - In this study, the potential of chitosan/poly(vinyl alcohol) (CS/PVA) blends as capping agent for stabilization of Ag-nanoparticles (Ag NPs) during their in situ gamma irradiation induced synthesis was investigated. The UV-vis absorption spectra show the surface plasmon absorption band around 410 nm, which confirms the formation of Ag-nanoparticles. It was found that the composition of CS/PVA blend affected the size of the obtained Ag-nanoparticles, as well as the parameters such as density, molar concentration and effective surface area, calculated from the experimentally obtained UV-vis absorption spectra and spectra obtained by simulation according to the Mie theory. SEM micrograph and XRD measurement indicated a spherical morphology and face centered cubic crystal structure of Ag-nanoparticles, with diameter around 12 nm. The values of optical band gap energy between valence and conduction bands (E-g), calculated from the UV-vis absorption spectra, also show dependence on the blend composition for Ag-CS/PVA colloids as well as for Ag-CS/PVA nanocomposites. AB - The optical properties of 150 keV N+ implanted ethylene-norbornene (TOPAS 6017S-04) copolymer were investigated using phase modulated spectroscopic ellipsometry (PMSE) and ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy in the ranges of 0.6-6.5 eV and of 1.5-6.2 eV, respectively. The single-effectiveoscillator model was used to fit the calculated data to the experimental ellipsometric spectra. The results show that the oscillator and dispersion energies decrease with increasing ion fluence up to 10(15) cm(-2), and then these parameters increase with further fluence increasing. Analysis of the UV-Vis absorption spectra revealed the presence of indirect electronic transitions with the band gap energy in the range of 1.3 to 2.8 eV. It was found that both the band gap energy and the energy width of the distribution of localized band tail states decrease, while the values of Tauc coefficient increase with increasing the ion fluence. From the ellipsometric data we found that the real part of the dielectric function increased about 7% after irradiation with 10(15) cm(-2), and decreased about 10% in samples modified with 10(16) cm(-2).

AB - This paper reports on a study of microstructrual changes in TiN/Si bilayers due to 200 key Ar+ ions irradiation at room temperature. The 240 nm TiN/Si bilayers were prepared by d.c. reactive sputtering on crystalline Si (100) substrates. The TiN films were deposited at the substrate temperature of 150 degrees C. After deposition the TiN/Si bilayers were irradiated to the fluences of 5 x 10(15) and 2 x 10(16) ions/cm(2). The structural changes induced by ion irradiation in the TiN/Si bilayers were analyzed by Rutherford Backscattering Spectroscopy (RBS), X-ray diffraction analyses (XRD) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). The irradiations caused the microstructrual changes in TiN layers, but no amorphization even at the highest argon fluence of 2 x 10(16) ions/cm(2). It is also observed that the mean crystallite size decreases with the increasing ion fluence. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were synthesized in situ by gamma-irradiation using poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PVP) as a capping agent. The concentration, molecular weight and the structure (crosslinked and interpenetrated network) of PVP were varied, in order to determine the influence of the capping agent in the radiolytic synthesis of the Ag/PVP nanosystems. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed that AgNPs obtained from the solutions containing higher PVP concentration and higher molecular weight were spherical in shape, with narrow size distribution and a diameter of similar to 6 nm, while slightly larger rod-shaped silver agglomerates, with bimodal nanoparticle size distribution and diameters of similar to 10 nm and similar to 20 nm were obtained from the solutions containing lower PVP concentration and lower molecular weight. Strong plasmon coupling and extending of plasmon resonance was observed by UV-vis spectroscopy, as a result of formation of nanorod-like agglomerates. Crosslinked and interpenetrated network did not affect the structure of synthesized AgNPs. Ag/PVP nanocomposite, in the form of thin film, was obtained by solvent evaporation from Ag/PVP colloid solution with 10 wt% of PVP, and characterized by FTIR spectroscopy. The interactions in Ag/PVP nanocomposite are shown to be the result of the coordination bonding between AgNPs and nitrogen from pyrrolidone ring of PVP. The optical properties of investigated Ag/PVP nanosystems, as measured by the values of optical band gap, E-g, are mainly the consequence of the interparticle distance as a result of the concentration and the structure of surrounding PVP macromolecules. AB - Ion bombardment is a suitable tool to modify the optical properties of polymers. In the present study the effect of ion bombardment on the optical absorption of ethylene-norbornene copolymer (TOPAS) was studied using ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) and Raman spectroscopy. Polymer samples were bombarded with 60 key C4+ and N4+ ion beams to various fluences ranging from 1.0 x 10(13) to 1.0 x 10(16) cm(-2). The indirect and direct band gaps have been determined. The values of direct band gaps have been found to be greater than the corresponding values of the indirect band gaps. Activation energy has been investigated as the function of ion fluences. The number of carbon atoms per conjugated length is determined according to modified Taucs equation. The correlation between the optical band gap, activation energy for optical transition and the number of carbon atoms per conjugated length as well as chemical structure changes induced by ion beams irradiation have been discussed in the case of ethylene-norbornene copolymer. AB - Fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP) and tetrafluoroethylene-perfluoro(alkoxy vinyl ether) (PFA) copolymer films were irradiated in vacuum with 60 key C4+ and N4+ ions to fluences ranging from 1.0 x 10(12) to 5.0 x 10(15) cm(-2). Changes in optical and dielectric properties were analyzed by spectroscopic ellipsometry and ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis), Raman and dielectric relaxation spectroscopies. Direct and indirect energy band gap values were determined from the absorption edge in the 200-800 nm region using Taucs relation. The values of the direct energy gap have been found to be greater than the corresponding values of the indirect energy gap. Significant changes in the index of refraction, and 13 and gamma dielectric relaxations were observed in the case of N4+ irradiated FEP and PFA samples. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

All rights reserved.",

AB - The hyperfine interactions of Ta-181 probe in the nickel-2 at.% hafnium alloy have been studied by the perturbed angular correlation method in the temperature range 78-1131K. The magnitude of the magnetic dipole interaction of Hf-181/Ta-181 substituting in ferromagnetic Ni(Hf) solid solution decreases with increasing temperature. As a result of the restricted solid solubility of Hf in Ni, a second phase (HfNi5) in the Ni-Hf sample was detected. Hf-181/Ta-181 which resides in HfNi5 senses weak electric quadrupole interaction. The observed anomalous temperature behavior was ascribed to distortions in the HfNi5 cubic phase. The third measured hyperfine interaction corresponds to the quadrupole interaction of Hf-181/Ta-181 positioned in HfO2 contamination originating from an annealing procedure above 900 K.

AB - MgH(2) powder samples have been irradiated with 120 keV Ar(+8) ions with different ion fluencies ranging from 10(12) to 10(16) ions/cm(2). irradiation effects are estimated by SRIM calculations, and investigated experimentally using Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The observed changes of structure and vibrational spectra are elaborated, their consequences on hydrogen bonding in MgH(2) discussed, and influence on H-desorption properties investigated by Temperature Programmed Desorption (TPD) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) techniques. it has been established that near-surface defects have a predominant influence on decreasing the H-desorption temperature. Variations of Raman, TPD and DSC spectra with irradiation conditions suggest that there are several mechanisms of dehydriding, and that they depend on defect concentration, interaction and ordering. AB - Surface modification of hydroxyapatite (HA) thin films electrodeposited on titanium was conducted by ion implantation, using nitrogen and argon ions at different constant fluences of 1x10(15), 1x10(16) and 1x10(17) ions/cm(2). SEM and XRD analysis, as well as SRIM calculation, were used to monitor the changes induced by ion bombardment. In the case of HA film implanted with N(4+) ions, the unit cell parameters and unit cell volume increase with increasing nitrogen ion fluences. Similarly, the unit cell parameters and unit cell volume increase after Ar(6+) ions irradiation to a 1x10(15) ions/cm(2). At higher fluences, the unit cell parameters and unit cell volume decrease when argon ion fluences increase to 1x10(16) and 1x10(17) ions/cm(2). These structural changes are consequence of different mechanism of energy transfer of nitrogen and argon ions to HA film. For nitrogen ion irradiation electron energy loss is predominant, while for argon ion irradiation nuclear energy transfer to HA film prevails.

AB - In order to understand the influence of defect zones on desorption behavior of MgH2, Xe 120 keV ion irradiation of this material has been performed. DSC, SEM measurements, and SRIM calculations have been used to characterize induced modifications and its influence on the hydrogen desorption behavior of MgH2. We have demonstrated that the near-surface area of MgH2 plays the crucial role in hydrogen desorption kinetics. DSC analysis provides clear picture of vacancies influence on H diffusion and desorption in MgH2, and points out that there is possibility to control the thermodynamic parameters by controlled ion bombardment. AB - Ion beam mixing of Fe/Si bilayers, induced by 100 keV (40)Arions at room temperature was investigated. Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy (RBS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were applied for structural characterization. The main focus of this study was on the influence of the substrate structure on interface mixing. The influence of the substrate structure is due to the two classes of irradiated bilayers, Fe thin films deposited on crystalline or pre-amorphized Si substrates. An about 76% higher efficiency of atomic transport across the pre-amorphized Fe/a-Si interface as compared to that of Fe/c-Si bilayers was observed.

AB - Heavy-ion irradiation of ferromagnetic thin layers changes their micromagnetic and microstructural properties, due to the production of defects, relaxation or build-up of stress, or changes of grain size. When the ion range exceeds the layer thickness, ion mixing processes take place, leading to the formation of silicide phases. The present study deals with CO(30 or 55 nm)/Si bilayers irradiated at room temperature with 100- or 200 keV Xe ions to fluences of up to 15 x 10(15)/cm(2). The Si(100) wafers were either crystalline or pre-amorphized by 1 keV Ar+ implantation. Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy, in-plane magneto-optical Kerr effect, and X-ray diffraction served to analyse the samples before and after irradiation. The results will be compared with those obtained for other heavy-ions for Co/Si bilayers and in similar studies on Fe/Si bilayers. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

abstract = "Heavy-ion irradiation of ferromagnetic thin layers changes their micromagnetic and microstructural properties, due to the production of defects, relaxation or build-up of stress, or changes of grain size. All rights reserved.",

AB - We have measured hyperfine interactions of 181Ta probe in the polycrystalline 0.2at.%Hf-Ni, 2at.%Hf-Ni and 5at.%Hf-Ni alloys, by the time differential perturbed angular correlation (TDPAC) method at room temperature (RT). The hyperfine magnetic field (Hhf) in 0.2at.%Hf-Ni alloy at the 181Ta probe is 8.66(1)T, where the small atomic concentrations of Hf atoms mainly substitute on Ni host lattice sites. Three hyperfine interactions were detected in two other alloys. In the 2at.%Hf-Ni alloy, we found existence of Larmor precession frequency ωL (1)=536(2)Mrad/s at the 181Ta probe surrounded by Ni atoms and the second electric quadrupole interaction (EQI) ωQ (2)=2.20(2)Mrad/s at the 181Ta probe in new formed HfNi5 intermetallic phase. The third EQI ωQ (3)=137.4(1)Mrad/s corresponds to the small amount of monoclinic HfO2 phase contamination at T<900K. In the 5at%Hf-Ni alloy, magnetic dipole interaction (MDI) at the 181Ta probe is ωL (1)=536(6)Mrad/s, while the second EQI at the site of the same probe in HfNi5 is ωQ (2)=2.24(2)Mrad/s. The presence of ωQ (3)=128(1)Mrad/s at the 181Ta probe originating from HfO2 contamination is in good accordance with earlier published results for this phase.

AB - The electric quadrupole interaction in Hf2Ni was measured at 181Ta probe using the time-differential perturbed angular correlation method (TDPAC) in the temperature range 78 to 1314 K. Analysis of the obtained spectra revealed the presence of a single nuclear quadrupole interaction (NQI) and its linear descending dependence with increasing temperature. In the region 1134 to 1314 K, the presence of structural deformation is evident from the coincidence spectra.

AB - We have used the well known metal-ions-from-volatile-compounds (MIVOC) method at the mVINIS Ion Source to produce the multiply charged ion beams form solid substances. Based on this method the very intense and stable multiply charged ion beams of several solid substances having the high melting points were extracted. The ion yields and the spectra of multiply charged ion beams obtained from solid materials like Fe and Hf will be presented. We have utilized the multiply charged ion beams from solid substances to irradiate the polymers, fullerenes and glassy carbon at the low energy channel for modification of materials.

AB - The mVINIS ion source has enabled us to obtain multiply charged ion beams from gases as well as from solid materials. The solid substance ion beams were produced by using two techniques: (a) the evaporation of metals by using the inlet system based on a minioven and (b) the metal-ions-from-volatile-compounds method (MIVOC) by using the modified gas inlet system. Great efforts were made in the production of high current stable ion beams of solids with relatively C ion-beam current of over 300 mu A was one of the most high melting points (over 1000 degrees C). The B3+ intensive beams extracted until now. The obtained multiply charged ion-beam spectra of solid substances (B, Fe, and Zn) are presented as well as some of the corresponding experimental results achieved during the modification of polymers, carbon materials, and fullerenes. AB - The low-energy part of the TESLA Accelerator Installation comprises an electron cyclotron resonance ion source (the mVINIS ion source) and the channel for modification of materials (L3A). The L3A channel is long and has low beam transmission (30%-50%), so it is not suitable for high fluence implantations (over 10(16) cm(-2)). Therefore, we are planning to introduce an experimental channel (L4), close to the mVINIS Ion Source, where we shall be able to achieve high beam currents on the target and, consequently, irradiation of materials to high fluences. During the ion implantation, we shall be able to measure fluence rate, achieve uniform fluence distribution by a mechanism for x and y sample movements, and control the sample temperature in the range of 0-200 degrees C. abstract = "The low-energy part of the TESLA Accelerator Installation comprises an electron cyclotron resonance ion source (the mVINIS ion source) and the channel for modification of materials (L3A). AB - The modifications of copolymer of ethylene and norbornene induced by irradiation with 60 keV N4+ ions to the fluencies of 1.0 x 10(16) ions cm(-2) have been investigated using DSC, TGA, U-V-spectroscopy, direct current surface resistivity and impedance measurements. The measured heat and thermal properties reveal remarkable stability against degradation. Copolymer properties studied at low electric field strengths were directly related to the modified molecular structure. The decrease in electrical resistivity was mainly attributed to conjugated double bond formation observed by ultraviolet spectroscopy. AC conductivity and capacitance obtained from the real and imaginary part of admittance varies with frequency. The movement of charge carriers may be related to relaxation phenomena in the material and is similar to those observed in many amorphous semiconductors. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - In the course of a systematic investigation of heavy ion-irradiated Fe/Si layers, we have studied atomic transport and phase formation induced by 22-keV N-14(2+) ion implantation in Fe-57(30 nm)/Si bilayers at high fluences. We report here results obtained by Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and conversion electron Mossbauer spectroscopy after implantation and post-implantation annealing treatments. The irradiations caused little sputtering, but significant interface mixing. During implantation, iron nitrides, but no silicides were formed, even at the highest nitrogen fluence of 2x10(17) ions/cm(2). When heating these samples in vacuo up to 700degreesC, the iron-rich phases Eepsilon-Fe3N and gamma-Fe4N were produced. Starting at 600degreesC the silicide phase beta-FeSi2 was also identified.

AB - This article reports on the formation of iron nitrides during nitrogen ion irradiation of Fe/Si bilayers at room temperature. The 30 nm Fe-57/Si bilayers were prepared by pulsed laser ablation and irradiated with 22 keV N2+ ions at fluences of (0.6-2)x 10(17) ions/cm(2). The structural changes and phases formed by irradiation were analyzed by Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy (RBS), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) and conversion electron Mossbauer spectroscopy (CEMS). The results clearly show the formation of several iron nitrides. At the lower fluences, the samples contain a mixture of epsilon-Fe2+x N and alpha-Fe with nitrogen interstitials. For the highest fluence, the paramagnetic epsilon-Fe-2 N (61%) phase predominated. It can be concluded that the elemental iron almost fully transforms to an iron-nitride layer, but that no iron silicides are formed. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - The mVINIS ion source is a part of the TESLA Accelerator Installation, in Belgrade. It is an ECR ion source used as a stand-alone machine delivering multiply charged ion beams to a low energy experimental channel for modification of materials (the L3A channel). In the future, it will be also used as a heavy ion injector for the VINCY Cyclotron. In this article we present the recently introduced hardware and software changes resulting in an improved operation of the mVINIS: the emittance measurement system, the inlet system for precious gases, the improved control system of the microwave generator, a new power supply for the injection stage coil, and the improved program for recording and analysis of the ion beam spectra. AB - The channel for modification of materials (L3A) of the Tesla Accelerator Installation, in the Vinca Institute of Nuclear Sciences, connected to the mVINIS ion source, consists of an ion beam transport line and an interaction chamber enabling the ion beam assisted deposition. The 8.4 m long beam line, starting at an analyzing slit after an analyzing magnet, contains two electrostatic quadrupole triplet lenses: a 90degrees bending magnet and an electrostatic beam scanner. The maximal beam transmission coefficient, e.g., for 60 keV N4+ beam, has not exceeded 30%. At the time the beam line was designed, the mVINIS ion source was not commissioned, so that the emittances of the beams it delivered were underestimated. This is one of the reasons for the low transmission performance of the beam line. In this article the results of the beam line acceptance calculations are presented and compared with the measured beam emittances. The calculations are based on the transfer matrix formalism with no space charge taken into account. The suggestions for improving the beam transmission performance of the beam line are given.
