AB - The hydrodynamic flow-like behavior of charged hadrons in high-energy lead-lead collisions is studied through multiparticle correlations. The elliptic anisotropy values based on different orders of multiparticle cumulants, v 2{2k}, are measured up to the tenth order (k = 5) as functions of the collision centrality at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of s NN $$ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} $$ = 5.02 TeV. The data were recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 0.607 nb −1. A hierarchy is observed between the coefficients, with v 2{2} > v 2{4} ≳ v 2{6} ≳ v 2{8} ≳ v 2{10}. Based on these results, centrality-dependent moments for the fluctuation-driven event-by-event v 2 distribution are determined, including the skewness, kurtosis and, for the first time, superskewness. Assuming a hydrodynamic expansion of the produced medium, these moments directly probe the initial-state geometry in high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions.

AB - he method of Q-cumulants is a powerful tool for studying the fine details of azimuthal anisotropies in high energy nuclear collisions. This paper presents a new method, based on mathematical induction, to evaluate the analytical form of high-order Q-cumulants. The capability of this method is demonstrated via a toy model that uses the elliptic power distribution to simulate the anisotropic emission of particles, quantified in terms of Fourier flow harmonics . The method can help in studying the large amount of event statistics that can be collected in the future and allow measurements of the very high central moments of the distribution. This can, in turn, facilitate progress in understanding the initial geometry, the input to the hydrodynamic calculations of medium expansion in high energy nuclear collisions, and the constraints on it.

AB - The method for deriving counting rate equations in coincidence summing of gamma and X-rays that we have developed has made it much easier to obtain the results as well as the measurement process itself. This method allows us to determine the activity of a radioactive source directly without calibration of the detector and also to simultaneously to determine the efficiency of detection. We have successfully applied the method to the radionuclide with a simpler decay scheme such as 139Ce, 57Co, 133Ba. The application of this method to the 152Eu as a radionuclide with a much more complex decay scheme has also been equally successful. We are applying the method to 235U and 231Th and the preliminary results show that it is possible to apply this method to these radionuclides as well.

AB - Correlations between azimuthal anisotropy Fourier harmonics vn (n=2,3,4) are studied using the events from PbPb collisions at sNN=2.76 TeV generated by the HYDJET++ and multiphase transport (AMPT) models, and compared to the corresponding experimental results obtained by the ATLAS Collaboration. The Fourier harmonics vn are measured over a wide centrality range using the two-particle azimuthal correlation method. The slopes of the v2-v3 correlation from both models are in a good agreement with the ATLAS data. The HYDJET++ model predicts a stronger slope for the v2-v4 and v3-v4 correlations than the ones experimentally measured, while the results from the AMPT model are in a rather good agreement with the experimental results. In contrast to the HYDJET++ predictions, the AMPT model predicts a boomeranglike shape in the structure of the correlations as found in the experimental data. © 2020 American Physical Society.

AB - The elliptic flow (v(2)) event-by-event fluctuations in PbPb collisions at 5.02 TeV are analyzed within the HYDJET + + model. Using the multiparticle, so-called Q-cumulant method, v(2){2}, v(2){4}, v(2){6}, and v(2){8} are calculated and used to study their ratios and to construct skewness (gamma(exp)(1)) as a measure of the asymmetry of the elliptic flow distribution. Additionally, in order to check if there is a hydrodynamics nature in the elliptic collectivity generated by the HYDJET + + model, the ratio of v(2){6} - v(2){8} and v(2){4} - v(2){6} distributions is calculated. The analysis is performed as a function of the collision centrality. In order to check the HYDJET + + model responses, the results of this analysis are compared to the corresponding experimental measurements from the ALICE, ATLAS, and CMS experiments. A rather good qualitative agreement is found.

AB - The paper presents the application of a numerical method for the determination of the absorbed dose rate of gamma and X radiation in the dielectric thin layer of hafnium dioxide (RfO2) or SiO2, which is located in the structure of the MOS capacitor. Considering the radiation characteristics of the selected dielectrics, it can be concluded that there are advantages of RfO2 over SiO2 in the radiation field with high-energy X-rays. Similar radiation effects should be expected for the interaction of dielectric material with gamma ray photons originating from a Co-60 source, both in the dielectric layer with SiO2 and in that with RfO2. It can be concluded that for the same radiation absorbed dose into the MOS capacitor with RfO2, there are a greater number of generated electron-hole pairs, in which case the value of effective trapping efficiency is smaller than if SiO2 was used. © 2019 IEEE.

AB - Certain irregularities have been observed in the formation of probability matrices when applying our method for calculating the coincident summing effects occurringin the gamma spectroscopy of radionuclides. They have to do with the fact that, at certain energy levels, transition intensities are not balanced. As this affects the accuracy of our calculation, we have examined the source of those irregularities. This paper presents comments on the evaluation of the152Eu decay data. The paper offers an analysis of the errors and mistakes that the evaluators have made, in order to facilitate the future work in gamma spectroscopy.

AB - We present an improved statistical method for the calculation of mean lifetime of nuclei in a decay chain with an uncertain relation between mother and daughter nuclei. The method is based on the formation of time distribution of intervals between mother and daughter nuclei, without trying to set the exact mother-daughter nuclei relationship. If there is a coincidence of mother and daughter nuclei decays, the sum of these distributions has flat term on which an exponential term is superimposed. Parameters of this exponential function allow lifetime of daughter nucleus to be extracted. The method is tested on Monte Carlo simulation data.

We applied a new method to obtain the distribution of time intervals between the correlated signals of decay of the Po-216. The deduced half-life of Po-216 was found to be 144.0(6) ms, supporting the earlier published measurements and with an uncertainty much lower than any other previously reported value. AB - In this paper we present the results of applying the new approach for calculating coincidence summing effects. The application of analytical approaches to coincidence summing effects makes it possible to predict all summation peaks that occur in the spectrum. Accordingly, based on the value of the peak area in the spectrum and knowledge of probability transitions between excited states of a nucleus, it is possible to determine the efficiency of detection and activity of radioactive sources. This method is successfully applied to the decay of the radionuclide europium Eu-152. It provides a detailed description of the method of forming the matrix corresponding to the final result - determined activities and the efficiency of detection. The importance of the new method is that it allows us to determine the efficiency of detection and activity of radioactive sources directly without calibration of the detector, which is very important in metrology of radionuclides. AB - In this work the strong influence of geological factors on the variability of indoor radon is found in two of three geologically very different regions of South-Eastern Europe. A method to estimate the annual mean concentration when one seasonal measurement is missing is proposed. Large differences of radon concentrations in different rooms of the same house and significant difference in radon concentrations in one season comparing it to the others are noted in certain cases. Geological factors that can lead to such behavior are discussed. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

AB - In the treatment of Ba-133 decay by the method of coincidence summing, the transitions to the first two excited states of Cs-133 were ignored in former works. By applying the most accurate values for these transitions available in literature, we include them into the count rate equations and obtain solutions for the corresponding system. As a result of this more accurate forming of count rate equations, some terms, which contain previously ignored transition probabilities, turn out to be more significant than the conventionally included terms. We show that their inclusion in the system of count rate equations leads to fine improvements in the determinations of detection efficiencies and the activity of the Ba-133 source. AB - In our recent paper [1] we have shown in detail that the Ehrenfest paradox is not a paradoxof the Special Theory of Relativity (STR). We also analysed the logical status of the widelyspread statement that “moving clocks go slow”. We underlined that very often these problemsare treated very dogmatically. On the example of Tyapkin’s works [2, 3] we describe theregretable influence of dogmatic approach in the interpretation of the STR on the criticalthinking and approach

AB - The direct measurement of Ba-133 source activity by the application of the theoretical count rate equations has been recently developed by Novkovic et al. The analytical and Monte Carlo calculation of activity measurement uncertainties were described in previously published papers for the case of one recorded spectra. The procedure of uncertainty calculation for a sequence of successively recorded spectra, enabling the determination of the correlation between peak count rates, is presented in this paper. The uncertainty of activity obtained by the described method is caused by the uncertainty of the experimentally obtained input data and uncertainties of the used nuclear decay data.

AB - We propose a new method for determination of temperature in spallation events. It is shown that temperature can be determined by applying the friction model of energy dissipation in participant-spectator model of a spallation process. First order estimate of temperature dependence of the participant zone on reaction Q-value is obtained from the Fermi gas model considerations. The heat diffusion process is also discussed.

AB - By a rigorous logical analysis we show that the Ehrenfest paradox related to the relativistically rotating disc is not a paradox of the Special Theory of Relativity as it is usually treated in the literature because, as we proved rigorously, it does not follow from the principles of the Special Theory of Relativity but — contrary to this — contradicts them. We also analyse the logical status of the widely spread statement “moving clocks go slow” within the framework of the Special Theory of Relativity. Using the methods of the symbolic logic we show that this statement with correct interpretation of the meaning of the notion that the clock goes slow is, strictly speaking, at least misleading. We discuss the obtained results.

AB - The subject is a direct measurement of the activities of Ba-133 sources by application of the theoretical count rate expressions recently developed by Novkovic et al. The total uncertainties of the activity of the measured sources, obtained in two manners, are described in this paper. The presented method is successfully tested using a germanium spectrometer with efficiencies of 50%. The accuracy of this method is proved to be comparable with the present methods of the activity measurement of Ba-133. (c) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - A review of the calibration procedures of the semiconductor HPGe spectrometer is presented in this paper. Calibration standards were prepared using the standardized radioactive solution of the common monoenergetic radionuclides mixture and standardized multigamma Eu-152 solution. The matrix materials were spiked using the activated carbon, and homogenized mechanically or by suspension in C2H5OH. Experimentally determined efficiency curves were compared with those obtained by Monte Carlo simulation. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

AB - The results of experimental testing of the digital multichannel analyzer which digitalizes the signal after a preamplifier are presented. The recordings of some of the characteristics of the spectrometer containing a digital MCA, such as full-peak efficiency, net-area ratio of the two peaks and the stability of the peak position, were carried out under different input counting rates, with different radioactive sources. The tested MCA has shown some excellent features, like the stability of the peak position over a long-term period and flexibility in the adjusting of optimum measurement conditions. However, the performed tests have also shown some serious and unexpected disadvantages of the digital MCA when it operates under certain circumstances, one of them having to do with the automatic tuning of live-time correction at low-input counting rates.
