Properties of different types of dry electrodes for wearable smart monitoring devices

AB  - Wearable smart monitors (WSMs) applied for the estimation of electrophysiological signals are of utmost interest for a non-stressed life. WSM which records heart muscle activities could signalize timely a life-threatening event. The heart muscle activities are typically recorded across the heart at the surface of the body; hence, a WSM monitor requires high-quality surface electrodes. The electrodes used in the clinical settings [i.e. silver/silver chloride (Ag/AgCl) with the gel] are not practical for the daily out of clinic usage. A practical WSM requires the application of a dry electrode with stable and reproducible electrical characteristics. We compared the characteristics of six types of dry electrodes and one gelled electrode during short-term recordings sessions (≈30 s) in real-life conditions: Orbital, monolithic polymer plated with Ag/AgCl, and five rectangular shaped 10 × 6 × 2 mm electrodes (Orbital, Ag electrode, Ag/AgCl electrode, gold electrode and stainless-steel AISI304). The results of a well-controlled analysis which considered motion artifacts, line noise and junction potentials suggest that among the dry electrodes Ag/AgCl performs the best. The Ag/AgCl electrode is in average three times better compared with the stainless-steel electrode often used in WSMs.

AB  - In this paper, we establish a new scheme for identification and classification of high intensity events generated by the propagation of light through a photorefractive SBN crystal. Among these events, which are the inevitable consequence of the development of modulation instability, are speckling and soliton-like patterns. The usual classifiers, developed on statistical measures, such as the significant intensity, often provide only a partial characterization of these events. Here, we try to overcome this deficiency by implementing the convolution neural network method to relate experimental data of light intensity distribution and corresponding numerical outputs with different high intensity regimes. The train and test sets are formed of experimentally obtained intensity profiles at the crystal output facet and corresponding numerical profiles. The accuracy of detection of speckles reaches maximum value of 100%, while the accuracy of solitons and caustic detection is above 97%. These performances are promising for the creation of neural network based routines for prediction of extreme events in wave media. © 2020 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Deep Learning Approach for Highly Specific Atrial Fibrillation and Flutter Detection based on RR Intervals

AB  - Atrial fibrillation (AF) and atrial flutter (AFL) represent atrial arrhythmias closely related to increasing risk for embolic stroke, and therefore being in the focus of cardiologists. While the reported methods for AF detection exhibit high performances, little attention has been given to distinguishing these two arrhythmias. In this study, we propose a deep neural network architecture, which combines convolutional and recurrent neural networks, for extracting features from sequence of RR intervals. The learned features were used to classify a long term ECG signals as AF, AFL or sinus rhythm (SR). A 10-fold cross-validation strategy was used for choosing an architecture design and tuning model hyperparameters. Accuracy of 88.28 %, with the sensitivities of 93.83%, 83.60% and 83.83% for SR, AF and AFL, respectively, was achieved. After choosing optimal network structure, the model was trained on the entire training set and finally evaluated on the blindfold test set which resulted in 89.67% accuracy, and 97.20%, 94.20%, and 77.78% sensitivity for SR, AF and AFL, respectively. Promising performances of the proposed model encourage continuing development of highly specific AF and AFL detection procedure based on deep learning. Distinction between these two arrhythmias can make therapy more efficient and decrease the recovery time to normal heart rhythm. © 2019 IEEE.

Real-time chest-wall-motion tracking by a single optical fibre grating: a prospective method for ventilator triggering

AB  - Objective: The ventilators involved in non-invasive mechanical ventilation commonly provide ventilator support via a facemask. The interface of the mask with a patient promotes air leaks that cause errors in the feedback information provided by a pneumatic sensor and hence patient-ventilator asynchrony with multiple negative consequences. Our objective is to test the possibility of using chest-wall motion measured by an optical fibre-grating sensor as a more accurate non-invasive ventilator triggering mechanism. Approach: The basic premise of our approach is that the measurement accuracy can be improved by using a triggering signal that precedes pneumatic triggering in the neuro-ventilatory coupling sequence. We propose a technique that uses the measurement of chest-wall curvature by a long-period fibre-grating sensor. The sensor was applied externally to the rib-cage and interrogated in the lateral (edge) filtering scheme. The study was performed on 34 healthy volunteers. Statistical data analysis of the time lag between the fibregrating sensor and the reference pneumotachograph was preceded by the removal of the unwanted heartbeat signal by wavelet transform processing. Main results: The results show a consistent fibregrating signal advance with respect to the standard pneumatic signal by (230 +/- 100) ms in both the inspiratory and expiratory phases. We further show that heart activity removal yields a tremendous improvement in sensor accuracy by reducing it from 60 ml to 0.3 ml. Significance: The results indicate that the proposed measurement technique may lead to a more reliable triggering decision. Its imperviousness to air leaks, non-invasiveness, low-cost and ease of implementation offer good prospects for applications in both clinical and homecare ventilation.

AB  - We present a statistical analysis based on the height and return-time probabilities of high-amplitude wave events in both focusing and defocusing Manakov systems. We find that analytical rational or semirational solutions, associated with extreme, rogue wave (RW) structures, are the leading high-amplitude events in this system. We define the thresholds for classifying an extreme wave event as a RW. Our results indicate that there is a strong relationship between the type of RW and the mechanism which is responsible for its creation. Initially, high-amplitude events originate from modulation instability. Upon subsequent evolution, the interaction among these events prevails as the mechanism for RW creation. We suggest a strategy for confirming the basic properties of different extreme events. This involves the definition of proper statistical measures at each stage of the RW dynamics. Our results point to the need for redefining criteria for identifying RW events.

AB  - We present a statistical analysis based on the height and return-time probabilities of high-amplitude wave events in both focusing and defocusing Manakov systems. We find that analytical rational or semirational solutions, associated with extreme, rogue wave (RW) structures, are the leading high-amplitude events in this system. We define the thresholds for classifying an extreme wave event as a RW. Our results indicate that there is a strong relationship between the type of RW and the mechanism which is responsible for its creation. Initially, high-amplitude events originate from modulation instability. Upon subsequent evolution, the interaction among these events prevails as the mechanism for RW creation. We suggest a strategy for confirming the basic properties of different extreme events. This involves the definition of proper statistical measures at each stage of the RW dynamics. Our results point to the need for redefining criteria for identifying RW events.

AB  - Objective: Algorithms to predict shock outcome based on ventricular fibrillation (VF) waveform features are potentially useful tool to optimize defibrillation strategy (immediate defibrillation versus cardiopulmonary resuscitation). Researchers have investigated numerous predictive features and classification methods using single VF feature and/or their combinations, however reported predictabilities are not consistent. The purpose of this study was to validate whether combining VF features can enhance the prediction accuracy in comparison to single feature. Approach: The analysis was performed in 3 stages: feature extraction, preprocessing and feature selection and classification. Twenty eight predictive features were calculated on 4s episode of the pre-shock VF signal. The preprocessing included instances normalization and oversampling. Seven machine learning algorithms were employed for selecting the best performin single feature and combination of features using wrapper method: Logistic Regression (LR), Naïve-Bayes (NB), Decision tree (C4.5), AdaBoost.M1 (AB), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Nearest Neighbour (NN) and Random Forest (RF). Evaluation of the algorithms was performed by nested 10 fold cross-validation procedure. Main results: A total of 251 unbalanced first shocks (195 unsuccessful and 56 successful) were oversampled to 195 instances in each class. Performance metric based on average accuracy of feature combination has shown that LR and NB exhibit no improvement, C4.5 and AB an improvement not greater than 1% and SVM, NN and RF an improvement greater than 5% in predicting defibrillation outcome in comparison to the best single feature. Significance: By performing wrapper method to select best performing feature combination the non-linear machine learning strategies (SVM, NN, RF) can improve defibrillation prediction performance. © 2018 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Terahertz chiral metamaterial based on twisted closed ring resonators`

AB  - We present a chiral metamaterial (CMM) made of periodically distributed compact elements in a form of twisted closed ring resonators designed to be operational in terahertz (THz) frequency range. We analyze the three observed resonances in the absorption spectra and electric field distribution of linearly polarized incident electromagnetic waves. It has been shown that they arise due to excitation of symmetric and antisymmetric modes and are dependent on the geometry of resonant elements as well as the periodicity of the system. For the case of incident circularly polarized waves, a phenomenon of circular dichroism was observed, and its origin and dependency on the geometrical parameters and metal and dielectric losses was examined. This study indicates that the proposed CMM has a high potential for applications in the design of different THz components.

AB  - We address the stability and dynamics of eigenmodes in linearly shaped strings (dimers, trimers, tetramers, and pentamers) built of droplets in a binary Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). The binary BEC is composed of atoms in two pseudo-spin states with attractive interactions, dressed by properly arranged laser fields, which induce the (pseudo-) spin-orbit (SO) coupling. We demonstrate that the SO-coupling terms help to create eigenmodes of particular types in the strings. Dimer, trimer, and pentamer eigenmodes of the linear system, which correspond to the zero eigenvalue (EV, alias chemical potential) extend into the nonlinear ones, keeping an exact analytical form, while tetramers do not admit such a continuation, because the respective spectrum does not contain a zero EV. Stability areas of these modes shrink with the increasing nonlinearity. Besides these modes, other types of nonlinear states, which are produced by the continuation of their linear counterparts corresponding to some nonzero EVs, are found in a numerical form (including ones for the tetramer system). They are stable in nearly entire existence regions in trimer and pentamer systems, but only in a very small area for the tetramers. Similar results are also obtained, but not displayed in detail, for hexa-and septamers. Published by AIP Publishing.

Influence of disorder on generation and probability of extreme events in Salerno lattices

AB  - Extreme events (EEs) in nonlinear and/or disordered one-dimensional photonic lattice systems described by the Salerno model with on-site disorder are studied. The goal is to explain particular properties of these phenomena, essentially related to localization of light in the presence of nonlinear and/or nonlocal couplings in the considered systems. Combining statistical and nonlinear dynamical methods and measures developed in the framework of the theory of localization phenomena in disordered and nonlinear systems, particularities of EEs are qualitatively clarified. Findings presented here indicate that the best environment for EEs creation are disordered near-integrable Salerno lattices. In addition, it is been shown that the leading role in the generation and dynamical properties of EEs in the considered model is played by modulation instability, i.e., by nonlinearities in the system, although EEs can be induced in linear lattices with on-site disorder too.

AB  - A stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) is a great concern for laser fusion, causing an energy and symmetry loss and target preheating. In particular, for dominating backward SRS (BRS), a complexity of nonlinear saturation was revealed. Recently, to develop lasers at multi-exawatts and beyond, relevant to high-energy physics, a proposed Raman amplification based on BRS met a restrictive operation window. Here, we stress BRS generics that due to a nonlinear frequency shift (relativistic/trapping effect), it nonlinearly saturates with intermittent pulsations. A break up of Manley-Rowe invariants explains a non-steady saturation. Further, a coherent pulsation BRS regime is proposed for femto-sec pulse generation in a thin exploding foil plasma, with parameter scalings investigated by analytics and particle simulations.

AB  - We report the coexistence and properties of stable compact localized states (CLSs) and discrete solitons (DSs) for nonlinear spinor waves on a flat-band network with spin-orbit coupling (SOC). The system can be implemented by means of a binary Bose-Einstein condensate loaded in the corresponding optical lattice. In the linear limit, the SOC opens a minigap between flat and dispersive bands in the systems band-gap structure, and preserves the existence of CLSs at the flat-band frequency, simultaneously lowering their symmetry. Adding on-site cubic nonlinearity, the CLSs persist and remain available in an exact analytical form, with frequencies that are smoothly tuned into the minigap. Inside of the minigap, the CLS and DS families are stable in narrow areas adjacent to the FB. Deep inside the semi-infinite gap, both the CLSs and DSs are stable too.

AB  - Non-invasive ventilation performed through an oronasal mask is a standard in clinical and homecare mechanical ventilation. Besides all its advantages, inevitable leaks through the mask cause errors in the feedback information provided by the airflow sensor and, hence, patient-ventilator asynchrony with multiple negative consequences. Here we investigate a new way to provide a trigger to the ventilator. The method is based on the measurement of rib cage movement at the onset of inspiration and during breathing by fibre-optic sensors. In a series of simultaneous measurements by a long-period fibre grating sensor and pneumotachograph we provide the statistical evidence of the 200 ms lag of the pneumo with respect the fibre-optic signal. The lag is registered consistently across three independent delay metrics. Further, we discuss exceptions from this trend and identify the needed improvements to the proposed fibre-sensing scheme.

Stable optical vortices in nonlinear multicore fibers

AB  - The multicore fiber (MCF) is a physical system of high practical importance. In addition to standard exploitation, MCFs may support discrete vortices that carry orbital angular momentum suitable for spatial-division multiplexing in high-capacity fiber-optic communication systems. These discrete vortices may also be attractive for high-power laser applications. We present the conditions of existence, stability, and coherent propagation of such optical vortices for two practical MCF designs. Through optimization, we found stable discrete vortices that were capable of transferring high coherent power through the MCF.

AB  - We consider two-dimensional (2D) arrays of self-organized semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) strongly interacting with electromagnetic field in the regime of Rabi oscillations. The QD array built of two-level states is modelled by two coupled systems of discrete nonlinear Schrodinger equations. Localized modes in the form of single-peaked fundamental and vortical stationary Rabi solitons and self-trapped breathers have been found. The results for the stability, mobility and radiative properties of the Rabi modes suggest a concept of a self-assembled 2D soliton-based nano-antenna, which is stable against imperfections In particular, we discuss the implementation of such a nano-antenna in the form of surface plasmon solitons in graphene, and illustrate possibilities to control their operation by means of optical tools.

AB  - We introduce a discrete model for binary spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates trapped in a deep one-dimensional optical lattice. Two different types of the couplings are considered, with spatial derivatives acting inside each species, or between the species. The discrete system with inter-site couplings dominated by the spin-orbit coupling (SOC), while the usual hopping is negligible, emulates condensates composed of extremely heavy atoms, as well as those with opposite signs of the effective atomic masses in the two components. Stable localized composite states of miscible and immiscible types are constructed. The effect of the SOC on the immiscibility-miscibility transition in the localized complexes, which emulates the phase transition between insulating and conducting states in semiconductors, is studied.

AB  - Multicore fibers with linearly coupled cores are considered as a means of the coherent transport needed for high-capacity communication systems and high-power fiber lasers. The conditions of the existence and stability of coherent light propagation in multicore fibers with circularly arranged cores are derived. The multicore fiber is modeled by the linear discrete complex Ginzburg-Landau equation, while its eigenvalues are found analytically. The inverse eigenvalue problem proposing the commensurability of eigenvalues is solved to find the intercore coupling coefficients that support periodic revivals of the input state. Both planar modes and vortices are considered. Effects of the central core and material loss/gain on eigenvalue commensurability conditions and mode dynamics are studied in detail. AB  - The cardiovascular health of the human population is a major concern for medical clinicians, with cardiovascular diseases responsible for 48% of all deaths worldwide, according to the World Health Organization. The development of new diagnostic tools that are practicable and economical to scrutinize the cardiovascular health of humans is a major driver for clinicians. We offer a new technique to obtain seismocardiographic signals up to 54 Hz covering both ballistocardiography (below 20 Hz) and audible heart sounds (20 Hz upward), using a system based on curvature sensors formed from fiber optic long period gratings. This system can visualize the real-time three-dimensional (3-D) mechanical motion of the heart by using the data from the sensing array in conjunction with a bespoke 3-D shape reconstruction algorithm. Visualization is demonstrated by adhering three to four sensors on the outside of the thorax and in close proximity to the apex of the heart; the sensing scheme revealed a complex motion of the heart wall next to the apex region of the heart. AB  - Spatially periodic modulation of the intersite coupling in two-dimensional (2D) nonlinear lattices modifies the eigenvalue spectrum by opening mini-gaps in it. This work aims to build stable localized modes in the new bandgaps. Numerical analysis shows that single-peak and composite two-and four-peak discrete static solitons and breathers emerge as such modes in certain parameter areas inside the mini-gaps of the 2D superlattice induced by the periodic modulation of the intersite coupling along both directions. The single-peak solitons and four-peak discrete solitons are stable in a part of their existence domain, while unstable stationary states (in particular, two-soliton complexes) may readily transform into robust localized breathers. AB  - In non-invasive ventilation, continuous monitoring of respiratory volumes is essential. Here, we present a method for the measurement of respiratory volumes by a single fiber-grating sensor of bending and provide the proof-of-principle by applying a calibration-test measurement procedure on a set of 18 healthy volunteers. Results establish a linear correlation between a change in lung volume and the corresponding change in a local thorax curvature. They also show good sensor accuracy in measurements of tidal and minute respiratory volumes for different types of breathing. The proposed technique does not rely on the air flow through an oronasal mask or the observation of chest movement by a clinician, which distinguishes it from the current clinical practice. AB  - Mechanical physiological pulsations are movements of a body surface incited by the movements of muscles in organs inside the body. Here we demonstrate the use of long-period grating sensors in the detection of cardio-vascular pulsations (CVP), in particular apex and carotid pulsations. To calibrate the sensors, we use a mechanical tool designed specifically to measure the sensor response to a localized perturbation at different grating curvatures as working points. From the data we infer the amplitude of the CVP. Together with the electrophysiological signals, the CVP signals obtained from the sensors can provide significant information on heart function which is inaccessible to the electrocardiogram. The low cost and easy handling of the fibre sensors increase their prospects to become the sensors of choice for novel diagnostic devices.

AB  - We investigate the stability and dynamical properties of complexes consisting of two identical vortices with topological charges S = 1 and 2 in the system of two linearly on-site-coupled two-dimensional (2D) vortices. The system is mathematically modeled by two coupled nonlinear differential-difference 2D Schrodinger equations. It is found that the on-site and off-site vortices form symmetric and asymmetric complexes, respectively, with respect to the interface sites. In general, the existence regions of complexes shrink with an increase of the interlattice coupling strength. Stable symmetric complexes exist within the stability window in the parametric space whose width gradually shrinks with an increase of the interlattice coupling strength. The asymmetric vortex complexes are unstable, except in the limit of vanishing coupling between lattices.
