AB - The essence of this study is synthesis of a newly developed and efficient heterogeneous catalyst based on aluminum oxide support promoted with potassium iodide (KI) as active dopant responsible for pronounced catalyst activity. Modified sol–gel, reflux and hydrothermal method were used for synthesis of aluminum-oxide support using aluminum isopropoxide as a precursor. The γ-Al2O3 support and KI/γ-Al2O3 catalyst samples were examined by various experimental techniques. Effects of several operational parameters were considered and those are: methanol to sunflower oil molar ratio, catalyst loadings, reaction time and reaction stirring rate. The obtained results indicated that modified sol–gel method for synthesis of γ-Al2O3 catalyst support is the most favorable for obtaining the catalyst with superior catalytic performances in transesterification of sunflower oil. A maximum conversion (triglycerides to methyl esters) of 99.99% was achieved using the SG-KI/γ-Al2O3-770 catalyst under following optimal process parameters: 15:1 methanol to sunflower oil molar ratio, 2.5 wt% catalysts loading, 600 rpm stirring rate and 4 h of the reaction run.

AB - The aim of the present study is to investigate the performances of hemp block made of hemp shives and CaO binder (lime). In order to improve the performances of cono block, a selection of particle size from 1 mm to 40 mm of hemp shiv was made. The optimization of the mass ratios of the components was also done. The results show that there is a positive effect of reducing the dimensions of the hemp shiv particles on the mechanical properties of the formed cono block. Also, there is a significant influence of the mass ratio of the components on the mechanical properties of the obtained cono blocks.

AB - Cigarette waste in the form of cigarette butts is one of the most common forms of waste in the world. It contains more than 5,000 toxic ingredients and chemicals that pose a serious risk to the health of wildlife, humans and marine and freshwater organisms. Billions of cigarettes are produced worldwide every year, resulting in the accumulation of tons of toxic waste. Depending on the environmental conditions and weather conditions, cellulose acetate filters can take up to 10 years to completely decompose, during which time heavy metals and toxic chemicals are constantly released into the environment. Although possible methods of disposing of collected cigarette butts include incineration and landfilling, techniques can result in the release of hazardous fumes and can be expensive. Treatment and recycling of cigarette butts and their conversion into different materials could be a potential solution to the resulting environmental pollution. Until the publication of this review, there are several studies and papers on cigarette recycling with encouraging results and a number of them have been studied methods, including recycling cigarette butts in asphalt concrete and baked brick, as a carbon source, sound-absorbing material, corrosion inhibitor, biofilm carrier and many others.

AB - Mucograft is collagen matrix was designed for use in open healing situations due to its compact outer layer. The technique presented in this article is an attempt to avail this attribute for covering open oral wound in guided bone regeneration (GBR) procedure. The essential idea of this technique is to avoid scoring of periosteum, submucosa and muscle layer for buccal flap advancement. Therefore, we used mucograft to cover bone substitute and barrier membrane in GBR surgical procedure. Thus, we avoided periostal-releasing incisions (PRI) and gained reposition of the flap to original level without impairing the attached keratinized gingiva. Buccal flap advancement in situations of shallow vestibulum, shortly attached gingiva and strong muscle pull may reduce or eliminate attached gingiva with an adverse effect on extended survival of placed implants. This technique promises to be beneficial for the preservation of the soft tissue around dental implants after GBR procedure.

This technique promises to be beneficial for the preservation of the soft tissue around dental implants after GBR procedure.",

AB - The mesoporous TiO2 films were prepared by dip coating technique
combined with the evaporation-induced self-assembly method using
selected polymer templates. Influence of specific surface area, pore size,
(nano)crystal structure and morphology of TiO2 films on the photocatalytic
behaviour was investigated. In addition, particular process parameters were
considered in decolorisation of organic dyes, such as: thickness of TiO2
films, initial concentration of selected pollutants and number of reaction
cycles.

AB - Plasma of argon stabilized arc column, in a current range 3-11 A, is investigated using emission spectrometric diagnostic techniques. Temperatures are evaluated using several methods: argon line to adjacent recombinational continuum intensity ratio, absolute emissivity of argon line, measurement of electron number density, and power interruption. Electron number density is evaluated from absolute emissivity of recombinational continuum. The difference between electron T-e and heavy particle T-h temperature ranged from 4500K for 3 A to 2300K for 11 A arc current. By comparing the present with the previously obtained results, using the same arc device but with the introduction of water aerosol, it is concluded that water aerosol reduces the clifference T-e - T-h and brings plasma closer to the partial thermodynamic equilibrium state.

AB - Radial distributions of plasma parameters, temperature, and electron number density, together with radial distribution of analyte absorption and emission, were investigated in order to obtain insight into the radial symmetry of low-current ( LT = 10A), atmospheric pressure, argon stabilized arc with tangential introduction of the aerosol. For plasma diagnostics, several methods were used: measurements of H line profile, absolute intensity measurements of the argon 430.01-nm line, and of the spectrally adjacent continuum and power interruption technique. It was found that the inevitable asymmetry in aerosol introduction has negligible influence on basic plasma parameters but influences considerably the spatial distribution of the analyte particle spectral absorption and emission.

AB - A current square modulation technique is used to investigate radial asymmetry of plasma column of argon stabilized direct current U-shaped arc. By monitoring the temporal behavior of spectral line intensities (in a millisecond domain) for various elements, it was observed that nonhomogeneous emission was much more pronounced for current modulated arc plasma compared to the stationary regime plasma. The reason for such behavior, for this as well as for other arc sources, lies in a mode the stream of argon with aerosol is introduced into the arc plasma.

AB - The current of a U-shaped argon stabilised DC arc was square modulated with a 40 Hz repetition frequency between 6 and 3 A. The delayed line intensity responses to the modulation of the arc current were investigated using calcium as a representative analyte. The intensities of both the atomic and ionic lines were monitored at different distances from the are axis in the presence of various concentrations of the easily ionised element. Temporal evolutions were monitored on a millisecond time scale. It was found that the responses of the line intesity to the arc current change strongly depended on the observed radial position, especially in the vicinity of the arc axis. The obtained results showed a significant influence of even small amounts of the easily ionised element oil the excitation and transport of the analyte and indicated a way of possibly improving the analytical capabilities of the excitation source.

AB - U-shaped d.c. argon stabilized arc with aerosol supply was investigated by current modulation between 9 and 3 A level and low current period lasting from 0.05 to 40 ms. The variable low current period has great influence on delayed line intensity response that provides information about a recombination and transport processes in plasma. The obtained results indicate that plasma slowly reaches stationary state and that processes related to changes in atom concentration play important role. Character of temporal responses strongly depends on first ionization energy of analyte.

AB - Preliminary studies have shown that external oscillatory magnetic fields of a few mT imposed to the atmospheric pressure DC argon arc plasma with aerosol supply, can produce significant favourable changes of its spatial and spectral characteristic. These changes are promising for improvement the analytical performance of such treated plasma. In this work, the applied magnetic fields strengths were in the range of 29- 23 mT and frequencies of 300-900 Hz. Spatial emission intensities of several element lines have been investigated in such magnetic field-plasma configuration with various plasma operating conditions and arc device construction modifications. Applied magnetic field induces lines emission intensity enhancements of the most elements observed. Enhancements (up to 20 times) depend on arc current, magnetic field strength and frequency applied, composition of sprayed solution, spatial plasma zone observed and construction details

abstract = "Preliminary studies have shown that external oscillatory magnetic fields of a few mT imposed to the atmospheric pressure DC argon arc plasma with aerosol supply, can produce significant favourable changes of its spatial and spectral characteristic. Enhancements (up to 20 times) depend on arc current, magnetic field strength and frequency applied, composition of sprayed solution, spatial plasma zone observed and construction details",

AB - In this work, the effect of physical parameters on the yield of fullerene, synthesized in a hollow cathode plasma reactor is investigated. The experimental investigations done previously have shown that the fullerene yield depended on tehcnical parameters - the current intensity, inert gas pressure, type of gas and interelectrode gap. The aim of this work was to show that the fullerene yield depends on physical parameters - carbon concentration, carbon flow rate from the interelectrode gap, axial temperature and temperature gradient between the. arc channel and the chamber walls as,well. It was found that fullerene synthesis occurs in an inert heat bath with dimensions determined by die temperature gradient. The lower temperature limit is around 2000 K and the value of the upper limit is die value of the axis temperature which depends on the discharge conditions. The synthesis of fullerenes is more effective if the carbon concentration in the heat bath is large and the carbon flow rate from that zone to colder parts of chamber is small.

AB - The responses to the fast interruption of the arc current have been studied for the spectral line intensities of several elements emitted by U-shaped direct current (d.c.) arc plasma with aerosol supply. The arc was burned at atmospheric pressure. Solutions containing the investigated elements were introduced with a concentric glass nebulizer into the argon stream of 2.7 1 min(-1). The arc current of 6 A was interrupted in periods that lasted up to 200 mus. At the moment of power interruption, the spectral line intensities are either suddenly increased indicating Saha balance or suddenly decreased indicating Boltzmann balance. Plots of intensity vs. time are used to evaluate the mechanisms that maintain the populations of excited states in the stationary state and processes occurring in the plasma during the power-off period. Excited levels of the elements with high ionization energies, like Ar, H and O, are predominantly populated by three-body recombination process i.e. they are controlled by the Saha balance. Excited levels of elements with medium ionization energies are predominantly populated by collisions with electrons i.e. controlled by the Boltzmann balance. Some of the spectral lines of C, P and Hg with high-excited levels missed the sudden intensity change, a cooling jump, which could be interpreted by the presence of two opposite mechanisms, Saha and Boltzmann balances, that cancel out the effect. Spectral line responses of easily ionized elements were found to depend on the plasma region. In a 2-mm axis region, the intensities do not show a cooling jump, but increase slowly during the power-off period. At medium distances from the arc axis, the spectral lines show typical Boltzmann type response. Farther to the arc periphery, where the electron concentration is very low but emission is still high, the power interruption does not influence the intensities and this indicates that the excitation is not prevailed by electron collisions. AB - The difference between electron and gas temperatures in a low current U-shaped d.c. arc with aqueous aerosol supply was studied using a power interruption technique. Monitoring of the temporal evolution of recombination continuum after power switch-off revealed that it was necessary to do a correction of the measured values due to a change in electron concentration. It was shown that the plasma studied was a two temperature type and that the temperature difference ranges from 1850 K to 600 K for arc currents from 3 to 10.5 A, respectively. A comparison with literature results for pure argon arc plasma shows that aerosol introduction reduces the temperature difference.

AB - Two atomizers were compared: an N2O-C2H2 flame and a stabilized U-shaped DC arc with aerosol supply. Both the high plasma temperature and the reducing atmosphere obtained by acetylene addition to the argon stream substantially increase the sensitivity of boron determination by atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) when the arc atomizer is used. The results were compared with those for silicon as a control element. The experimental characteristic concentrations for both elements were compared with the computed values. The experimentally obtained characteristic concentration for boron when using the arc atomizer was in better agreement with the calculated value. It was estimated that the influence of stable monoxide formation on the sensitivity for both elements was about the same, but reduction of analyte and formation of non-volatile carbide particles was more important for boron, which is the main reason for the low sensitivity of boron determination using a flame atomizer. The use of an arc atomizer suppresses this interference and significantly improves the sensitivity of the determination.

It is demonstrated, with a U-shaped are as an example, that the limits of detection, in addition to well-defined parameters as described by Boumans(1,2) and Winge,(3) depend on the signal integration time. It is shown that with increasing integration time, the limits of detection are decreased within some limits and that the precision :Ind concentration sensitivity are improved as well. A mathematical expression for the dependence of the detection limit on the integration lime is presented. To increase the reliability of the measurement of the mentioned parameters, the working conditions were optimized for the following analytes: Ag, Al, Au, Cr, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Pd, Pt, and V. The obtained limits of detection are comparable or better than those obtained by ICP for the elements studied. It was estimed that the possibility exists for their further improvement up to 10 times.

AB - The effect of easily ionized elements (EIE) in d.c. plasma (DCP) has been modeled and experimentally investigated. The introduction of the EIEs in the U-shaped DCP decreases a potential barrier due to an internal radial electric field, which allows the partially ionized analyte better entry into the hot plasma zone and produces enhancement of the analyte spectral emission. Compared to the equilibrium concentration, the increased electron concentration in the fringe region due to large radial gradients is accounted for in the model. By comparing model predictions to experimental data, the validity of the model is tested. The main features of the effect, the large enhancement at small addition of EIE and almost equal enhancement of ion and atom line intensities, are fairly well described by the model. The results are believed to be applicable to the inverted Y-shaped DCP. The effect in the inductively coupled plasma (ICP) has been briefly discussed from the point of view of the proposed model. AB - Sample introduction and a demixing effect in the plasma of the d.c. are in argon with aerosol supply are studied using spectroscopic techniques. The observed deviations from the uniform distribution of the partially ionized plasma gas components are correlated to the radial electric field in the are column plasma. A mathematical model is proposed for the quantitative treatment of the radial field effect. The radial electric field is assessed from the radial distribution of the electron pressure. The proposed model is used in two ways: (a) starting from the close-to-real are temperature distribution, other parameters are calculated assuming that plasma is in local thermodynamic equilibrium. The calculations are performed for mixtures of two gases: majority gas with high ionization energy and minority gas with low ionization energy at low concentration. The results obtained show that the partial pressure of an easily ionizable component decreases from the periphery towards the are column axis. The size of the decrease ranges from a negligible value up to four orders of magnitude, depending on the ionization energy of the minority gas. (b) For the experimental verification of the proposed model, all the variables governing the sample entry into the plasma, including the initial partial pressure of the minority gas, are determined by independent spectroscopic techniques. Vapors of Ba, Ca, Fe and Zn are utilized as a minority gas. These values are then used to calculate the radial distribution of the minority gas partial pressure according to the proposed model. Good agreement between the experimental and the calculated values is observed. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.

AB - The possibility to combine two physico-chemical phenomena is studied in this work in order to attain simultaneous control of temperature and light intensity in a greenhouse: (a) isothermal heat storage in phase change materials and (b) thermochromic behavior of complex compounds dissolved in the phase change materials. Two binary mixtures melting near the ambient temperature were studied: (a) 0.925 Ca(NO3)(2) . 4.06 H2O + 0.075 CaCl2 . 6.11 H2O melting at 35.6 degrees C and (b) 0.9 CH3CONH2 + 0.1 Ca(NO3)(2) . 4 H2O, melting at 27.7 degrees C. The melting temperature, the enthalpy of fusion and the heat capacity of both mixtures were determined from DSC measurements. Both mixtures showed to be suitable solvents for the formation of consecutive cobalt(II) chloride complexes. The compositions of the complex compounds were adjusted in each mixture so that the absorption spectra in visible spectral range exhibited low absorbance at the melting temperature and a pronounced increase of the absorbance and/or change of color with the increase of temperature in the range relevant for passive solar energy receivers. The combined latent heat storage and the outstanding reversible change of the optical properties of the dissolved complex compounds with temperature is proposed to be applied in solar heated agricultural greenhouses in areas with fluctuating climate conditions. The increase of absorbance with temperature acts as an auto-regulated shading protection from overheating. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - The melting point depression of acetamide on addition of anhydrous sodium acetate and sodium acetate trihydrate was followed by DSC. Two sets of measurements were made for two crystalline forms in which the melts crystallized. From cryoscopic data, activity coefficients of acetamide were calculated in the concentration range 0 to 0.390 mole fraction of sodium acetate and 0 to 0.376 mole fraction of sodium acetate trihydrate. Activities of the salt components were calculated from the activities of the solvent using a simple analytical method. From melting point depression data and the known molar cryoscopic constant of acetamide, the Vant Hoff dissociation factor was calculated for both anhydrous and hydrated sodium acetate in the concentration ranges studied.
