AB - This paper describes the processing, microstructure, optical and electrical properties of the nanocrystalline (NC) niobium and zinc doped titanium-tin-oxide (TTO:NZ) based ceramics. Variety of techniques was employed (X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive, Raman and impedance spectroscopy) in the characterization of the obtained TTO:NZ, which confirmed the formation of NC solid-solution matrix with Ti0.8Sn0.2O2 composition. A specific highly dense (approximately 97% of the theoretical density was reached) varistor like microstructure (matrix metal-oxide grains surrounded by the grain-boundary regions) and accordingly resembling electrical properties (breakdown electric field of approximately 130 V/mm and nonlinearity coefficient of α ≈ 6.5) were achieved through double cation doping and elected condition of the mechanochemical solid-state synthesis. Impedance response analysis of TTO:NZ ceramics by means of an equivalent electrical circuit based on the brick-layer model for polycrystalline materials revealed the presence of two temperature dependent electrical relaxation phenomena of the non-Debye type as well as the negative temperature coefficient of resistance behavior.

AB - In this research we prepared nanocrystalline YNbO4:Eu3+ phosphor, i.e. nanophosphor, powder using an efficient mechanochemical method followed by annealing. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that YNbO4:Eu3+ crystallizes in monoclinic structure C2/c where, from the point of view of A and B in ABO(4) compounds, cation coordination can be noted as [6+2, 4+2]. Crystallite size of about 40 nm, was estimated using Debye Scherrers equation. Raman spectroscopy with 785 and 532 rim excitation wavelengths is performed to record a majority of materials phonon modes and to provide more in depth understanding of the YNbO4 structure. Scanning electron microscopy observations indicate that the mechanical treatment during synthesis is causing non-uniformity of the powder microstructure. High resolution photoluminescent measurements upon UV excitation showed intense emission coming from f-f transitions of the europium ion with the lifetime of 0.68 ms, suggesting that the obtained YNbO4:Eu3+ is a good potential phosphor. A comparison of emissive properties with microcrystalline YNbO4:Eu3+ was made and it showed higher values of emission intensity and lifetime of the nanocrystalline sample.(C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. AB - We prepared Eu3+- and Sm3+-doped YNbO4 phosphor powders using a simple solid-state reaction method and examined their photoluminescence properties in order to investigate the possibility for their usage in phosphor thermometry. Photoluminescence measurements were performed in the temperature range 303-773 K, and the fluorescence intensity ratio of the paired emissions lines was studied as a function of temperature. The results have shown that YNbO4:Eu3+ possesses the absolute sensitivity of approximately 3 Chi 10(-3) K-1 at about 700 K, while relative sensitivity changes within the range of 0.5-2.7% K-1. YNbO4:Sm3+ has the maximum sensitivity of around 7 Chi 10(-4) K-1 at about 700 K with the relative sensitivity of 0.43% K-1 around 500 K. Calculated temperature sensitivities of samples show that these materials have a good potential for the development of therrnographic phosphors. Experimental lifetime measurements recorded at 303-773 K were fitted using a temperature dependent charge transfer model, TDCT. This model yields good agreement between experimental and fitted lifetime data. The sample crystalline structure is confirmed by XRD measurements. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - Phosphor materials are of special interest due to their important applications ranging from solid state lightning and displays to biomedicine. Understanding the spectroscopic properties of these materials is important for optimizing their emission for technological applications. Zinc silicate (Zn2SiO4) has been identified as a very suitable host matrix for many rare-earth and transition metal dopant ions with excellent luminescent properties in the blue, green and red spectral zones. Here, we present high resolution measurements of low-temperature photoluminescence of trivalent europium doped zinc silicate particles prepared by combination of so-gel and combustion synthesis route. We observed and analyzed 5D(0) - GT F-7(J) spin forbidden f-f electronic transitions at low temperatures, as well as emission kinetics from D-5(0) level and lifetime-temperature dependence.

It was found that nanoparticles embedded in PMMA matrix preserve their typical phosphorescence emission. The influence of Zn2SiO4 nanofillers on thermal properties of PMMA was also investigated. A shift towards higher glass transition temperatures and slight improvements in thermal stability of the nanocomposites compared to pure PMMA were observed and are discussed herein.

AB - Lithium-indium oxide is a high-density (5.9 g center dot cm(-3)), wide band-gap semiconductor with promising applications for scintillating detection of solar neutrinos as well as for efficient phosphorescence when doped with Er3+ or Sm3+ ions. In this report, we demonstrate visible upconversion emission of Er3+-doped LiInO2 synthesized by a simple solid-state chemistry procedure and discuss mechanisms responsible for pumping the Er3+ ions to upper levels. Intense upconversion emission is observed in the green and red spectral regions under near-infrared excitation, and it is greatly enhanced by co-doping with Yb3+ ions. We also examined the upconversion intensity change as a function of temperature, and, consequently, possible applications of this material as a low-temperature sensor.

AB - Lithium-indium oxide doped with Eu3+ or Sm3+ is prepared by a solid-state chemistry method and its properties are analyzed with respect to its possible application as a phosphor material. X-ray diffraction confirmed that the present synthesis yields a product in tetragonal structural form (space group I4(1)/amd) with no impurity phases. The optical band gaps of 3.4 eV for the Eu3+ sample and 3.5 eV for Sm3+ are found. Photoluminescence emission measurements showed that rare-earth ions substitute In in sites of D-2d symmetry with single-exponential emission decays of 1.5 ms for the Eu3+-doped sample and 2.3 ms for the Sm3+ case.

AB - Lithium-indium oxide is one of the candidate materials as solid-state scintillators for solar neutrinos due to an inverse beta -decay of In-115 to Sn-115. On the other hand, when doped with rare-earth ions such as Eu3+ or Sm3+, it becomes a promising phosphor material. In this report we present a simple solid-state procedure for preparation of LiInO2:Eu3+ powders. X-ray diffraction confirmed product in tetragonal structural form (space group: I4(1)/amd) and no impurity phases were detected. Then, high resolution photoluminescence emission measurements were performed at room and low temperatures to find D-5(0) - GT F-7(J). Emission kinetics from D-5(0) level exhibited pure single exponential behavior with lifetime of about 1.5 ms. Maximum energy splitting of F-7(1) manifold is recorded as a function of temperature. AB - In this research we prepared Zn2SiO4:Eu3+ phosphor nanopowders using a combination of sol-gel and combustion synthesis with the aim to examine the influence of synthesis conditions on the optical properties of the phosphor. As combustion fuels we used polyethylene glycol (PEG) with different average molecular weights, and the combustion was performed in two ways-in a microwave oven and a conventional furnace. Optical properties were examined by photoluminescence spectroscopy and spectra of all samples showed intense red emission, typical for f-f electronic transitions of the Eu3+ ions. Emission decays exhibited classical one exponential behavior at longer times and nonlinear nature at short times, with average lifetimes varied from 0.49 to 0.71 ms between samples. Judd-Ofelt theory was applied to experimental data for the quantitative determination of optical parameters such as Omega(2,4) Judd-Ofelt parameters, radiative and nonradiative transition rates and emission quantum efficiency. Calculated parameters vary moderately between samples prepared with different PEGs and combusted in different manner. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - We present here the synthesis procedure for obtaining Zn2SiO4:M2+ (M = Mn, Ni, Co) powder based on the combination of so-gel and combustion methods. Combustion is performed both in a conventional furnace and in a microwave oven in order to evaluate the influence of combustion conditions on the properties of synthesized material. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed that obtained material has crystallized in rhombohedral structure of Zn2SiO4 (willemite) with traces of ZnO. The effects of combustion conditions are investigated further by means of thermogravimetric analysis, differential thermal analysis, infrared spectroscopy, diffuse reflectance optical spectroscopy and photoluminescence spectroscopy. Based on these results we could conclude that microwave combustion synthesis can be successfully applied for Zn2SiO4-based products.

AB - The capability of photoacoustic (PA) spectroscopy for the detection of the second harmonic thermal waves on metal surfaces is investigated. Expressions for the first and second harmonic amplitude and phase PA spectra are derived from the one-dimensional nonlinear heat conduction equation using stepwise successive approximation method. First and second harmonic amplitude and phase PA spectra of nickel sample are measured in a heat reflection PA configuration. PA amplitude intensity dependence on excitation intensity exhibit characteristic behavior, it has linear dependence in the case of first harmonic and square dependence in the case of second. Experimental data were in excellent agreement with theoretical calculations. Modulation frequency dependence of amplitude and phase provided sufficient data for the thermal properties evaluation from PA measurements.

AB - A series of nine ternary Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) complexes with some aromatic diamines and dianion of terephthalic acid (tpht) have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, magnetic susceptibility measurements, IR and diffuse-reflectance spectroscopy. All compounds were obtained as microcrystalline solids, stable in air and insoluble in common solvents. Two of them, [M(tpht)(dipya)(H2O)(2)]. 3H(2)O [M = Co(II), Ni(II); dipya = 2,2-dipyridylamine], were obtained as single crystals and their crystal structures have been determined by X-ray structure analysis. Both structures consist of discrete [M(tpht)(dipya)(H2O)(2)](2+) complex units with two H2O molecules in the trans position. Three additional H2O molecules together with coordinated H2O and O atoms from COO groups make a three-dimensional network of hydrogen bonds. Terephthalato ligands are coordinated by only one COO group, which acts as a chelating ligand. Central metal ions are in a distorted octahedral environment. Based on the above-mentioned analysis and known crystal structures, the possible structures and geometry of the complexes are discussed. All Co(II) and Ni(II) complexes are pseudooctahedral and mononuclear, with only one of the tpht COO groups coordinated in a chelate mode. Cu(II) complexes have probably distorted octahedral geometry with bridging role of tpht ions and monodentate or strongly asymmetric coordination of COO groups. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd.
