AB - This study considers effects of pressure of up to 110 kbar on line position and fluorescence lifetime T for T-4(1) - GT (6)A(1) transition in LMA:Mn2+ and LMA:Mn2+, Nd3+. Energy transfer between Mn2+ and Nd3+ in LMA:Mn2+, Nd3+ has also been considered. Results indicate pressure induced line shift towards longer wavelengths, a red-shift in both crystals with the same rate of 0.182 nm kbar(-1). Pressure influences fluorescence lifetime T in the considered crystals differently; whereas for LMA:Mn2+ increasing pressure causes slow linear decrease Of T, and for LMA:Mn2+, Nd3+ T increases linearly as pressure raises. Energy transfer efficiencies decrease with pressure. High pressure induced red-shift can be explained by a simple model. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - The fluorescence spectra of Y2O3:Eu3+ nanoparticles have been measured under the pressure of up to 78kbar at room temperature. In this pressure range, a red-shift of 0.02(1)nm/kbar-1 is noticed for the 0-2 line (5D07F2 transition). This shift is explained by the change of negative charge of the surrounding ligands. Compatibility between measured and calculated values for the 0-2 line position was obtained. The luminescence decay curves of the 5D07F2 transition were studied up to 78kbar and were found to behave exponentially for all pressures studied. The fluorescence lifetime for the 0-2 line (5D07F2 transition) slowly decreased with pressure. The pressure effect on for the 0-2 line (5D07F2 transition) was explained by a model which considers the pressure effect on the line position, inter-ionic distance, ion volume and polarizability, molecular volume and polarizability, molecular refractive index and the refractive index medium nmed of the surrounding hydrostatic medium. The fluorescence lifetime calculated by the present model is in close correspondence with the experimental values.

AB - The Analysis of variance (ANOVA) method has been used to illustrate the implementation of adaptive numerical (AN) techniques for the prediction of the precipitation behaviour of commercial materials. Case studies involving the analysis of a-phase precipitation kinetics in duplex stainless steel (DSS) produced by sand casting and age hardening of 2219 alummium alloy microalloyed with Ge and/or Si are presented. For each alloy, complex datasets comprised the results obtained from heat treatment trials on a range of commercial processing conditions, so that a single and combined effect of various parameters can be determined. This enabled an estimate of the most influential parameters to be made, providing an effective means of commercial alloy development and process optimisation. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V.
