AB  - The district heating system in Serbia, with an installed capacity of 6,600 MW, currently supplies 58 towns with thermal energy. As a candidate country for accession to the European Union, Serbia faces the obligation to reduce the level of its greenhouse gas emissions as part of environmental reforms. This paper presents a basic scenario and three alternatives for final energy consumption in the district heating sector for the years 2015, 2020 and 2025. It is suggested that demand for heating will increase 10% up to 2020 and by 15% up to2025, in relation to 2015 levels, while the share of each energy carrier will not change. Changing the structure of energy sources for heat supply assumes a decrease in the share of coal and liquid fuel, and increases in the use of biomass and natural gas. The results obtained were compared to the General Index of Sustainability which is a measure of the complexity of the proposed energy scenario. The paper considers the formation of related energy indicators as quantitative tools for the analysis of changes. It also proposes a methodology for multi-criteria analysis in the sustainability assessment of complex energy systems based on the stochastic evaluation of criteria (sets of indicators and sub-indicators). In this way, the results of the multi-criteria assessment can help in the decision-making process in cases where economic, social and ecological criteria are considered to be influential. © 2018 Serbian Society of Heat Transfer Engineers.

Assessing the sustainability of Serbian school buildings by ASPID method

AB  - Sustainable development indicators mainly provide information that can link the observed energy system with sustainable development. This paper considers building energy indicators in order to provide monitoring and measurement of energy performance of buildings. The results of measurement which are considered were obtained in school buildings in Serbia. The aim of this paper is to select, define, and calculate energy indicators as criteria for evaluating the quality of public buildings, with regard to sustainable development. The criteria for assessing sustainability are quantified by certain defined sets of economic, social and environmental indicators. The ASPID method of multi-criteria analysis is also described and mathematically presented. This method is based on the synthesis technique of fuzzy sets and the sustainability of the school buildings was based on their assessment as complex energy systems. © 2018 Serbian Society of Heat Transfer Engineers.

Temperature correction factor simulation over the heating period

AB  - New Regulations on energy efficiency in buildings in the Republic of Serbia legislate values for the temperature correction factor used to calculate the heat flux to the outdoor environment through construction elements of a certain type. The temperature correction factor is used to correct errors caused by calculation of heat losses based on the design outdoor and indoor temperature difference of building elements adjacent to unheated spaces which are in direct contact with the ground or external environment. Since the temperature correction factor directly influences the calculation of total heat losses and total annual energy demand, it is recommended that the temperature correction factor be determined on the basis of measured values of outdoor and indoor air temperature, or, on the basis of the values obtained by the simulation. This paper presents the results of measurements in the High School of Design, Textile and Management in Belgrade in order to assess energy efficiency and the energy performance of buildings. Data obtained on the basis of measurements, such as indoor and outdoor temperatures, are used for the calculation of the heat transfer coefficient for the building envelope elements as well as to calculate a temperature correction factor for the unheated attic space of the building. This paper also offers a dynamic simulation of the multi-zones building in the TRNSYS environment. The aim was to compare temperature correction factor values obtained from measured temperature values, with those calculated from standard, taken from the Regulation table and produced by simulation. © 2018 Serbian Society of Heat Transfer Engineers.

AB  - The paper presents a possible approach for creating business decisions based on multi-criteria analysis. Seven options for a possible revitalization of the thermal power plant Kolubara-A Unit No. 2 with energy indicators of sustainable development (EISD) are presented in this paper. The chosen EISD numerically express the essential features of the analyzed options, while the sustainability criteria indicate the option quality within the limits of these indicators. In this paper, the criteria for assessing the sustainability options are defined based on several aspects: economic, social, environmental and technological. In the process of assessing the sustainability of the considered options the Analysis and Synthesis of Parameters under Information Deficiency (ASPID) method was used. In this paper, the EISD show that production and energy consumption are closely linked to economic, environmental and other indicators, such as economic and technological development of local communities with employment being one of the most important social parameter. Multi-criteria analysis for the case study of the TPP Kolubara-A clearly indicated recommendations to decision makers on the choice of the best available options in dependence on the energy policy. Application of multi-criteria assessment in decision-making proces in planning of sustainable development of energy system options

AB  - Coal combustion power plant Kolubara A has five thermal units with total installed capacity of 270 MW operates as a part of Public Enterprise which has planned to accept and apply the Clean Development Mechanism (new power plants on lignite and natural gas with higher energy efficiency as well as activities related to the rehabilitation and modernization of existing facilities). Two units were put in operation before more than fifty years and in order to extend the lifetime of these blocks in the process of revitalization, in this paper, beside an existing option which considers coal (lignite) combustion, are analysed possible options of thermal power units with gas and renewable energy sources: biomass, renewable solid fuels, waste materials, wind and sun. Paper presents seven energy system options of the thermal unit status which are described with suitable chosen indicators in respect to different aspects of sustainability: economical, ecological, social and resources indicators. In this paper energy indicators are defined as a tool for the sustainability assessment of energy system options. ASPID method of multi-criteria assessment was used to calculate general index of sustainability and obtained ranking of options. This study presented and analysed cases, with predefined constraints when priority has environmental indicator and different conditions where one of sub-indicators have priority, as an example of applying multi-criteria method.

AB  - The existing building stock energy consumption accounts for about 38% of final energy consumption in Republic of Serbia. 70% of that energy is consumed by residential sector, mostly for space heating. This research is addressed to the single family house building placed in the Belgrade city. The house has ground and first floor with total heating area of 130 m(2) and pellet as space heating source. The aim of this paper is to evaluate energy and economic analysis for different heating systems. Several home heating were compared: Option 1 (biomass combustion boiler using pellet as a fuel), Option 2 (gas combustion boiler), and Option 3 (heat pump). The building performance was evaluated by TRNSYS 17 simulation code. Results show estimated savings using renewable energy sources.

A comparison of the Analytic Hierarchy Process and the Analysis and Synthesis of Parameters under Information Deficiency method for assessing the sustainability of waste management scenarios

AB  - The selection of an appropriate Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis method or a combination thereof, is essential to support sustainability decision-making in the waste management sector. None of the methods is ideal, so that sometimes a combination of methods may be necessary. The aim of this study is to examine the ability the Analysis and Synthesis of Parameters under Information Deficiency method to be used in sustainable waste management, as never been used method in this sector. In order to do this, scenario ranking is done using the Analytic Hierarchy Process, and the results are compared with results obtained by the Analysis and Synthesis of Parameters under Information Deficiency method. Four waste treatment scenarios were developed based on the waste composition in city of Nit, and nine indicators were selected. The obtained results indicate that there is no significant difference in the scenario ranking, regardless of the method used, the Analytic Hierarchy Process or the Analysis and Synthesis of Parameters under Information Deficiency method. The best sustainable waste management scenario is the scenario which involves composting of organic waste and recycling of inorganic waste (393% ranking priority). None of the methods is ideal, so that sometimes a combination of methods may be necessary. The aim of this study is to examine the ability the Analysis and Synthesis of Parameters under Information Deficiency method to be used in sustainable waste management, as never been used method in this sector. In order to do this, scenario ranking is done using the Analytic Hierarchy Process, and the results are compared with results obtained by the Analysis and Synthesis of Parameters under Information Deficiency method. Four waste treatment scenarios were developed based on the waste composition in city of Nit, and nine indicators were selected. The obtained results indicate that there is no significant difference in the scenario ranking, regardless of the method used, the Analytic Hierarchy Process or the Analysis and Synthesis of Parameters under Information Deficiency method. The best sustainable waste management scenario is the scenario which involves composting of organic waste and recycling of inorganic waste (393% ranking priority). AB  - The indoor air quality in schools is very important for health and learning abilities of children. The primary indoor CO2 source in classrooms is the respiration of school building occupants. Also, CO2 comes from outside as a result of fossil fuels combustion. CO2 concentration depends on a ventilation rate, size of the classroom, number of occupants and their activity and time they spend in school building. Unfortunately, ventilation rates in schools were not often measured, even in cases when inadequate ventilation caused pupils health problems and their absence from school. The increase in indoor CO2 concentration above the outdoor concentration is considered as a good surrogate for the indoor concentrations of bio effluents. This paper presents the research of ventilation rates in five naturally ventilated schools in urban and rural areas in Serbia during the heating season. CO2 concentrations were measured outdoor and in three classrooms for five working days, continually. Ventilation rates are calculated based on measured concentrations of CO2. The results have shown that classrooms in Serbian schools have inadequate ventilation during the heating period. Mean value of carbon dioxide concentration has often been exceeding 1000 ppm. AB  - The air inside schools can be more polluted than the air outside. The purpose of this study was to investigate the air quality in primary school placed in town at the east of Serbia. The characterization of air pollution concentration was performed with main goal to determine relationship between indoor and outdoor air pollution within five classrooms. The measurements were conducted continuously in indoor and outdoor environment for period of 10 days. The standard sampling and analytical methods were applied (gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry). This paper presents and analyses concentrations of different physical and chemical pollutants in the indoor and outdoor environment: respirable particulate matter with different diameters (up to 2.5 mu m and 10 mu m), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon in particulate matters up to 10 mu m, volatile organic compounds, formaldehyde, ozone, carbon-dioxide and nitric-dioxide. It was found, in one class, that the concentration of particulate matter with diameter up to 10 and 2.5 microns as well as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon in particulate matters up to 10 mu m were higher in indoor environment than in outdoor. The average value of formaldehyde in all classrooms was significantly higher than recommended value. On the basis of received results, extensive school renovation program can be recommended. AB  - The paper presents a method for selecting and calculation indicators of sustainable development, needed for determining the level of sustainable development, expressed through sustainability index of residential buildings. It is important to verify procedure for determining economic, social and environmental sub-indicators based on consumption of final energy (used to meet space heating, hot water generation and household cooking needs, as well as for operation of various household electrical appliances, indoor temperature and humidity). It was done for representative sample of Belgrade buildings stock. Different dwelling types constructed in two different periods and heated by electricity, district heating and fossil fuels were analysed. Multi-criteria analysis was used to evaluate residential buildings sustainability. The results showed that the best building options, constructed in the period 1981-2006, are: the apartment buildings and single family houses (electricity for space heating) when economy indicator has priority; the apartments connected to the district heating system when environmental indicator has priority; and single family houses connected to the district heating system when social indicator has priority. Implementation of proposed methodology is beneficial when evaluating and comparing sustainability of different residential buildings, enabling decision makers to more easily reach decisions on the issues related to energy policy and environmental protection. AB  - As a non-Annex I Party to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and Kyoto Protocol signatory, the Republic of Serbia has committed to develop GHG (Greenhouse Gases) emission inventory and prepare comprehensive program of mitigation measures at national level. The paper presents results of 2000-2008 GHG emission inventory assembled for PDH (Public District Heating) sub-sector in accordance with revised IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) Tier 1 methodology. Evaluation of proposed mitigation measures was performed based on 2012 and 2015 GHG emission projections, obtained for basic and four alternative scenarios, all characterized by the same energy demand but with different fuel mix used. The first alternative scenario addresses GHG emissions in case that solid fuel is substituted by natural gas. The second alternative scenario represents a sub-scenario of the first alternative scenario, with additional substitution of liquid fuel with locally available biomass. Third alternative scenario addresses emissions resulting from complete fuel switch from natural gas to liquid fuel oil, while the final alternative scenario considers the case when natural gas is the only energy resource used. GHG emission trends in the period until 2015, examined in case of previously mentioned basic and four alternative scenarios, point out to the positive impact of fuel switch on GHG emission reduction and pathways for future implementation of proposed mitigation measures. Results obtained clearly quantified assumption that fuel substitution by locally available biomass could solve environmental problems, overcome problems associated with high prices of imported fuels, improve energy supply security and increase local employment. AB  - This paper presents the mathematical procedure for the determination of overall sustainability index of nine options for the agglomeration of economic, environmental and social indicators. Eleven sub-indicators were selected and calculated for all chosen options. In accordance to final energy consumption (for space heating, hot water production, cooking and the household electrical appliances) the selection, defining and determining the economic, social and environmental indicators was developed. It was done for all chosen options selected by qualitative characterization of residential objects in accordance with construction period, type of heating system and type of object (buildings or family houses). Investigation of the influence of non-linear normalization on the sub-indicators agglomeration was the aim of this paper. Normalized sub-indicators are obtained by selection of the appropriate linear (theta = 1) or non-linear function (theta not equal 1). Sustainability index and its standard deviation were calculated for different value of the parameter theta and each option in six different cases. AB  - The technical analysis of a hybrid wind-photovoltaic energy system with hydrogen gas storage was studied. The market for the distributed power generation based on renewable energy is increasing, particularly for the standalone minigrid applications. The main design components of photovoltaic/wind hybrid system are the photovoltaic panels, the wind turbine and an alkaline electrolyzer with tank. The technical analysis is based on the transient system simulation program TRNSYS 16. The study is realized using the meteorological data for a Typical Metrological Year for region of Novi Sad, Belgrade cities, and Kopaonik national park in Serbia. The purpose of the study is to design a realistic energy system that maximizes the use of renewable energy and minimizes the use of fossil fuels. The reduction in the CO2 emissions is also analyzed in the paper.

AB  - A lack of empirical data for residential indoor temperature has important implications for policy-makers in terms of energy performance objectives and the use of energy demand models for the building stock. This study investigates winter indoor temperatures, relative humidity and vapour pressure excess in 2009-2010 across various types and ages of buildings using half-hourly monitoring of 96 dwellings representative of residential buildings in Belgrade, including those with district heating (DH) with no direct occupant control in which heating is charged on a floor area basis. The average daily living room temperature of 22.8 degrees C (95%CI: 21.9-22.7) in DH dwellings was 2.3 degrees C higher than those with other heating types, including individual central heating (ICH) and non-central heating (non-CH), daily bedroom temperature of 22.3 degrees C (95%CI: 21.9-22.7) was 3.0 degrees C higher. Evening living room and night bedroom temperatures in ICH dwellings were 22% and 37% of the time respectively below 18 degrees C, and 10% and 27% of the time respectively in non-CH dwellings. The high degree of overheating in DH dwellings indicates the considerable potential to reduce energy consumption, if user controls and heating bills reflected household consumption were introduced. AB  - Two possible substitutions for fossil fuel used in heat production are biomass and solar energy. This paper presents an evaluation of various energy sources for hot water production in a heating plant. The heating plant was situated in one of the largest municipalities in the city of Belgrade, Serbia. It produces and delivers domestic hot water and energy for heating to approximately 17,000 households. It is possible to use of using renewable energy instead of fossil fuel for producing the thermal energy for the supply of domestic hot water. Hence, in this paper, an evaluation of the sustainability of different energy options for obtaining thermal energy was considered: 1) from gas combustion: 2) from gas combustion and solar collection 3) from biomass combustion 4) from gas and biomass combustion, and 5) from gas and biomass combustion and solar collection. To compare the different energy systems, the method of multi-criteria analysis was utilised. This method integrates various multi-dimensional criteria and provides an efficient method of estimating the sustainability of complex systems. The obtained results were compared by the General Index of Sustainability which is a measure of the complexity of a system. A basic set of energy indicators that relate to different aspects of sustainable development was defined. In this way, the results in the assessment of sustainability of energy options do not depend on the various analysts in decision making. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

AB  - Republic of Serbia consumes about 15 million tons of equivalent oil per year. At the same time potential of the renewable energy sources is about 3.5 Mtoe per year. Main renewable source is biomass, with its potential of about 2.6 Mtoe per year, and 60% of the total biomass source is of agricultural origin. Mainly, that type of biomass is collected, transported and stored in form of bales. At the same time in one of the largest agricultural companies in Serbia there are over 2000 ha of soya plantations, and also 4000 t per year of baled soya straw available, none of which being used for energy purposes. Therefore, efforts have been made in the Laboratory for Thermal Engineering and Energy of the Vinca Institute to develop a technology for utilizing bales of various sizes and shapes for energy production. Satisfactory test results of the I MW experimental facility - low CO levels and stable thermal output - led to the building-up of a 1.5 MW soya straw bales-fired hot water boiler, with cigarette type of combustion, for the purposes of greenhouse and office heating in the PKB. Further more, achieving good results in exploitation of that hot water boiler, the next step is building up the first combined heat and power (electricity) production facility, which will use agricultural biomass as a fuel, in Serbia.

AB  - The main objective of this paper is to evaluate energy and environmental benefits of the large-scale solar heating system connection with district heating system. The assessment of fossil fuels substitution by the solar energy for the hot water production for domestic use, during the summer period, is done. Hot water for district heating and domestic use is produced in heating plant Cerak placed in the suburb of Belgrade. The existing production and distribution system are based on fossil fuel energy, mainly on the natural gas. in the first phase of the project plan was to install about 10,000 m(2) of solar collectors to substitute nearly 25% of natural gas consumption. During the summer period, the saving of natural gas calculated for presented system is approximately 430,000 m(3) and in this way 900 t of the CO(2) emissions would be reduced. AB  - The main objective of this paper is to evaluate simulation of thermal performance of a residential 4 floors high building placed in the suburb of Belgrade (ground and 3 upper floors) with its total surface area of 1410 m(2). Its supplied with liquid petroleum gas storage lank as a fuel reservoir since there is automatic gas boiler in each apartment. Measurements have been carried out in first floor apartment (68 m(2) heating area) in heating season period Measured parameters are: inside and outside air temperature and U-value of apartment envelope. Weather data is obtained by using METEONORM, the software package for climatic data calculation based on last 10 years measurements. TRNSYS 16 has been used as the simulation tool. The behavior of the building in terms of heating loads for climate on a daily and monthly basis in heating season is investigated The calculations show possibility for saving energy by optimization inside temperature during different gas boiler working regimes.

Numerical simulation of fire spread in terminal 2 of Belgrade airport

AB  - This paper concern the results of software fire spread process prototype in terminal 2 of Belgrade airport using computational fluid dynamics. Numerical simulation of fire for the most critical fire scenario has been performed, primarily obtaining the space and time distribution of: velocity, pressure, temperature, and smoke concentration, assuming that HVAC systems have been switched off and all doors on the evacuation ways have been opened, just as the fire started Also, two simulations have been compared of the smoke ventilation and not ventilation for the same scenario. Within the framework of the results presentation, isosurfaces of constant temperature (100 degrees C) and smoke concentration (4000 ppm) are presented, based on the numerical simulation. Progression of these surfaces along the terminal 2 coincides to the experimental and experience evidence, forming the plume zone just above the fireplace, and spreading in the zone of underground ceiling and stairwell openings.

Experimental and numerical investigation of premixed acetylene flame

AB  - In this paper, the mean velocity, turbulence intensity and temperature profiles in different cross-sections of premixed acetylene flame are given. A mathematical model for prediction of velocity, temperature and concentration fields of axisymmetric free premixed turbulent flame is presented in this paper. A second-order closure for turbulent reacting flows is used. Special attentions is paid to model behavior with the respect to the prediction correlation coefficients of turbulent diffusion of the scalar components. Conditional and unconditional statistics of the LDA signals were performed using jet and/or air seed. Compared to commonly used unconditional statistics, conditional statistics of velocity fluctuations can give us more data about intensity of turbulent mixing in the flame. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd.
