AB - This study aimed to investigate the adsorption of As(V), phosphate, and textile dye Acid Green 25 (AG-25) on layered double hydroxides Mn-Fe_LDH and corresponding membranes (wCell/Mn-Fe_LDH). The wCell membrane, derived from waste tobacco boxes, was formed by cross-linking of epoxy and amino modified cellulose fibers with epoxy modified Mn-Fe_LDH and lysine as cross-linker. Structural and morphological analyses were conducted for Mn-Fe_LDH and wCell/Mn-Fe_LDH. The batch system explored pH, contact time, temperature, and initial concentration effects on wCell/Mn-Fe_LDH adsorption efficiency. Adsorption capacities of 82.71, 106.9, and 130.3 mg g−1 were achieved for As(V), phosphate, and AG-25, respectively, indicating effective anionic species removal. Kinetic analysis suggested intraparticle diffusion as the rate-limiting step. Thermodynamic parameters and ionic strength effects indicated a physisorption mechanism for AG-25 and surface complexation for As(V) and phosphate. Biodegradation experiments after five adsorption/desorption cycles revealed the membrane’s decomposition, with phosphate’s strong bonding releasing essential elements valuable for soil fertilization. Effluent wastewater treatment demonstrated low environmental impact through the formation of insoluble As(V) salts and photocatalytic dye degradation.

AB - Acrylate polymers are used in several applications such as dentistry, medicine, and industry. The modification of their properties using the reinforcement is of key importance for the possible applications. Layered double hydroxides are materials that are easily synthesized by several techniques giving the possibility to modulate the chemical composition and morphology of the reinforcement and they consist of a divalent and a trivalent anion hydroxide and the layers can be exfoliated and thus provide a material interesting for composite reinforcement. In this paper, Mn was used as a divalent and Al as a trivalent cation. The obtained particles were used as reinforcement for the preparation of composites in 1, 3, and 5 wt% quantities and prepared samples were compared to the matrix consisting of PMMA. Physical mechanical properties of the sample having the best mechanical properties (with 3 wt% of MnAl-LDH filers) exhibited 6.38% modulus of elasticity, 27% hardness, and 10% tensile strength improved values compared to the clear PMMA matrix. Toughness was lowered in this sort of composite compared to the pure matrix. Highlights: MnAl-LDH-PMMA composites improved modulus, strength, hardness Loss of toughness is tolerable for 3 wt% reinforcement Viscoelastic properties are improved for composites compared to matrix.

AB - In present study FEAL-LDH@SIO2 were Used for removing phosphate from aqueous solutions. FeAl-LDH with molar ratio Fe/Al = 3/1 was synthesized by co- precipitation from aqueous solutions in the present of SIO2 PARTICLES. Silica obtained from rice husks were used as a substrate for the deposition of LDH particles. The prepared material was characterized by scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2 adsorption/desorption isotherms (BET method) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). XRD analysis showed that Fe-Al had formed LDH structure. SEM analysis revealed deposition of LDH particles on SIO2 SUBSTRATE. The adsorption characteristics for phosphate uptake of the obtained material were performed. Adsorption experiments were carried out as a function of LDHs dosage with three different mass ratios of LDH/silica = 1/1, 2/1, and 3/1 and different phosphate concentration AT INITIAL PH 4. Phosphate concentrations were determined using spectrophotometer. The results showed that the maximum sorption capacities of phosphates calculated based on Langmuir equation was 52.68 mg g-1.

AB - Silica particles were produced form rice husk and used as reinforcement in the polymer matrix. The obtained silica particles' surfaces were modified with layered double hydroxides, which enabled better reinforcement in the PMMA matrix. Coprecipitation was used to synthetize Fe Al layered double hydroxides (LDH) with a Fe:Al cation content of 3:1 and an FeAl-LDH: silica ratio of 1:1. X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and scanning electron microscopy with EDS were used to characterize the synthesized particles. The prepared particle amounts in the PMMA matrix were 1, 3, and 5 wt. %. The purpose of this study was to see if the obtained SiO2 particles, as well as their modification with FeAl-LDH, had any effect on the mechanical properties of polymer composite materials. The mechanical characterization of obtained composites was done using Vickers microindentation tests and impact testing. The Vickers micro-hardness test showed that the addition of reinforcement increases the hardness of the composite. When compared to the matrix, the toughness of the composite material with a higher content of particles (5 wt. %) in the energy absorbed in this impact test was three times higher.

AB - The goal of this study was to investigate the effect of the structure of Mn-Al layered double hydroxide (LDH) on the adhesion behavior of composite adhesives on two Al alloys (L3005 and L8079). The composite adhesives were made out of the UV-curing Bisphenol A glycidylmethacrylate/triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (BT) as polymer matrix and the addition of 1, 3, and 5 wt. % of Mn-Al LDH as adhesion enhancers. Adhesion was evaluated by using the micro Vickers hardness testing procedure. The wetting angle of composite adhesives to the Al substrates was measured and compared to the adhesion parameter b obtained from the microhardness tests. The highest increase in adhesion was observed for BT with 5 wt. % of Mn-Al LDH on L3005 substrate, which was more than 15 times higher than the adhesion for the neat BT. The morphological segregation of composite adhesives after the contact with Al substrates was examined by optical microscopy and a higher compatibility of Mn-Al LDH particles with L3005 substrate was found. The methods used for the adhesion properties assessment suggested that the Mn-Al LDH was the best adhesion enhancer of the BT matrix for L3005 substrate containing a higher content of Mn and surface hydroxyl groups.

AB - The study of an effect of iron doping on the structural, microstructural and mechanical properties of sintered iron-doped mullite is presented. The results of phase composition, performed in detail by Mössbauer spectroscopy and XRD analysis, revealed that all added iron was inside the mullite lattice forming the single phase up to 12% by weight of Fe2O3 and 1300 °C. Samples, which were processed at 1550 °C, contained secondary phases, hematite or magnetite, regardless of the amount of added iron. Furthermore, the addition of iron decreases the values of relative linear shrinkage comparing to the values of undoped one (~18%) while the densities of the sintered samples rise as well as their values of microhardness. Even though the density values were not too high (90 TD%), the obtained values of microhardness were excellent, 1634 HV0.1 for maximum iron content due to the characteristic mullite microstructure.

AB - Comprehensive study on effect of YAG amount on densification, creep resistance and room-temperature mechanical properties of Al2O3-YAG composite pressureless sintered at 1600 degrees C was conducted. The main goal was to optimize the amount of YAG in order to fabricate a composite with improved creep resistance and sufficiently good room-temperature mechanical properties. The composite was made by mixing a commercially available Al2O3 powder with fine YAG powder obtained by glycine-nitrate combustion synthesis starting from aluminum nitrate and yttrium nitrate. Increased driving force for sintering of fine YAG powder allowed fabrication of dense Al2O3-YAG composite with up to 30 vol% YAG. The presence of YAG was found to be very effective in improving creep resistance of Al2O3-YAG composite. Large Y3+ ions blocked diffusion along Al2O3 grain boundaries, reduced diffusivity and therefore enhanced creep resistance of Al2O3-YAG composite which continuously increased as the YAG amount increased. The presence of YAG was also found to improve mechanical properties such as hardness and elastic modulus. The improvement of these properties was ascribed to increased density of Al(2)O(3)YAG composites owing to high sintering activity of YAG powder. While fracture strength of the composite can be as high as that of monolithic Al2O3, fracture toughness of composite decreased continuously as the YAG content increased. The decrease was ascribed to transgranular fracture of both YAG and Al2O3 grains in samples containing larger amounts of YAG. The proper balance between fracture toughness and creep resistance was found in composite containing 18 vol% YAG which had considerably improved creep resistance accompanied by a relatively small decrease in fracture toughness.

AB - The mining basin Kolubara lies about 50 km southwest of Belgrade and stretches across the river Kolubara from Lajkovac to its mouth in the Sava River. During coal exploitation a huge amount of clay is deposited as separate layer. Clay as a raw mineral material has a high economic potential due to their low price and high abundance. This material is used for various applications such as filters, heat insulators, absorbents, catalyst supports, building materialn and advanced environmental applications. Clay from Kolubara mining basin is caracterised by inductively coupled plasma spectroscopy (ICP), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM). abstract = "The mining basin Kolubara lies about 50 km southwest of Belgrade and stretches across the river Kolubara from Lajkovac to its mouth in the Sava River. AB - Diatomaceous earth is of sedimentary origin consists mainly of accumulated skeletons formed as a protective covering of the diatoms. Usually, high absorption capacity of diatomaceous earth provides its wide use as heat insulation, filter and absorbent material. Starting raw material diatomaceous earth from surface coal mine Kolubara, Serbia, was characterized using, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD). Chemical composition of diatomaceous earth was determined by wet chemical methods. In addition, the absorbed gamma ray dose rates is estimated based on the measured activity concentrations of natural radionuclides in clay were determined by gamma spectrometry. This research shows that this material is environmentally safe for further use.

AB - Investigated the possibility of using methyl methacrylate (MMA) as an acrylic binder in the preparation of ceramic powder of alumina for pressing with the intention of improving machinability of alumina flakes. Compared the properties of the green bodies and the properties of their corresponding sintered samples that are prepared with and without acrylic binder. The achieved higher density of green bodies with MMA (2.35 g/cm3) compared to green bodies without MMA (2.11 g/cm3) were formed under the optimal pressure of 60 MPa, indicating the improved packing of alumina powder with addition of acrylate. In the case of sintered samples, the porosities were increased, and the density and percentage of linear shrinkage were reduced. It has been shown that machining of green bodies, prepared with MMA, can be produced in the form of complex ceramic products of alumina like a screw with a nut and with great possibilities of commercial application.

AB - The goal of this research was to produce an environmental friendly, energy saving inorganic polymer using a metakaolin as a precursor. The clean technology which conserve the natural environment was employed for the production of these materials. The used kaolinite is clay obtained from Rudovci, Lazarevac, Serbia. Physicochemical properties of kaolin were investigated in previous work by Nenadović et al. [1]. Metakaolin (MK) was prepared by calcining kaolinite at 750 °C for 1 h. The influence of alkali activation, i.e. different concentration of NaOH as a component of alkali activator mixture on the process of polymerization of metakaolin is investigated. The alkaline solution was prepared from sodium silicate and 2M, 4M, 6M and 8 M NaOH (analytical grade) (volume ratio Na2SiO3/NaOH = 1.6). The inorganic polymer (IP) samples were formed from metakaolin and the four different alkaline solution (solid/liquid ratio was about 1), which were mixed for 15 min and then left at room temperature for one day. Finally, the mixture was kept in a sample drying oven for 2 days at 60 °C. Process of aging time of inorganic polymer samples at 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th days is followed by some analytical methods (XRD, FTIR). X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were used for characterization of metakaolin and metakaolin based inorganic polymers. After 28th days when the aging time were finished, on the surface of the samples were used scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). XRD analysis almost of all inorganic polymer samples revealed their amorphouslike structure with the position of an amorphous halo in the range 18°-32°, which indicates short range ordering of the reference sample with crystalline admixture of SiO2 (α-quartz, ICSD 89). The FTIR spectra of all samples shows a strong peak at ∼1000 cm−1 which is associated with Si–O–Si asymmetric stretching vibrations and is the finger print of the geopolymerization [2,3]. The FT-IR results show a shift of the Si-O or Si-O-X bands as the molarity of activator increasing during polymerization process, where X can be Si or Al. Both methods and XRD, as well as FTIR, show greater sensitivity to monitoring the effects of molarity, than the aging time within the same molarity to structural changes in inorganic polymer. SEM micrographs (Fig.1) showed a denser matrix, and a lower content of unreacted metakaolin particles due to increasing of molarity of NaOH. Structural reorganization of inorganic polymer samples occurs during the curing or aging in accordance with a polymerization mechanism.

AB - Alumina/YAG composites (AYX_t) with high relative density (99.2 %TD) were successfully obtained by mixing commercial alumina powder with different volume fractions of yttrium aluminium garnet (Y3Al5O12-YAG; 7, 14, 21 and 28). YAG was synthetized by nitrate glycine reaction in the form of precursor powder. Polycrystalline YAG powder was obtained by calcination at 950 degrees C for 2 h. Additionally, obtained compositions were characterized by XRD, SEM, EDX and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. By XRPD analysis was found that the particle size of YAG powders lies in the nanometric range (being lower than 35 nm). By SEM microphotographs of composites were confirmed the formation of a conductive path consisting from mutually interconnected YAG particles. This was confirmed by the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The highest electrical conductivity of grain (K-g) and grain boundary (K-gb) at 700 degrees C amounted to 2.22x10(-2) ohm(-1)cm(-1) and 9.44x10(-3) ohm(-1) cm(-1), respectively, was measured in the composite containing 21 vol% of YAG.

AB - The present study describes sintering behaviour of hydroxyapatite (HAp) upon addition of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) (1-10 wt.%) system in inert (Ar) atmosphere. The interaction between materials and melting of LFP influenced early and intermediate stages of HAp sintering, shifting the densification curves towards low-temperature side. Analysis of densification process indicated significant differences upon LFP addition. The reaction mechanism that assumes the initial interaction between phosphates from LFP and calcium from HAp was proposed, generating calcium vacancies and contributing to HAp densification. Cross-sections of sintered samples showed changes in microstructural properties, with uniform atomic distribution and presence of Li2Fe3O4 spherical inclusions (200 nm) located at grain boundaries of calcium phosphate matrix. The Rietveld refinement analysis indicated changes in structural and microstructural parameters like crystallite size, anisotropy and microstructural strain of HAp upon LFP addition. Mechanical characterisation indicated improvements in fracture behaviour upon LFP addition.

AB - Al2O3-YAG composite was obtained by sintering of porous Al2O3 preforms infiltrated with water solution of aluminium nitrate nonahydrate, Al(NO3)(3)center dot 9H(2)O and yttrium nitrate hexahydrate, Y(NO3)(3)center dot 6H(2)O. Al2O3 preforms with porosity varying from 26 to 50% were obtained after sintering at temperature ranging from 1100 to 1500 degrees C. Sintering of the infiltrated Al2O3 preforms led to formation of YAG particles due to reaction between Y2O3 and Al2O3 at high temperature. It was found that variation of porosity of alumina preforms and sintering temperature is an effective way to fabricate Al2O3-YAG composite with an unusual combination of properties. Open porosity was in the range 15-35%, specific surface was 0.6-6.1 m(2)/g, pore size was 150-900 nm whereas compressive strength was from 50 to 250 MPa. The effect of sintering temperature on YAG formation and phase composition were investigated using X-ray diffractometry whereas microstructure of the composite was analysed by scanning electron microscopy.

AB - Porous silica ceramics were obtained at low forming pressure (40-80 MPa) and low sintering temperature (850-1300 degrees C) for 4 h in air. Boric acid was used as a low-cost additive, in the amount of 2 wt%. Relatively high porosities of nearly 40% and 65% are obtained for the samples of clay and diatomite pressed at 40 MPa, and sintered at 1000 degrees C, respectively. The samples sintered at 1150 degrees C and 1300 degrees C have the average pore size diameters in the range of macroporous for clay 0.2-10 m and for diatomite 0.2-5 m. X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and mercury porosimetry measurements were employed to characterize of the obtained samples. Measurements of densities and open porosities by immersion technique were used, according to the Archimedes principle. The relations between mechanical characteristics of the samples formed by using different pressures and sintered at different temperature, were discussed.

AB - The most promising method for obtaining a large variety of non-oxide products having important technical uses is carbothermal-reduction reaction (CRR). By using this procedure, SiC and ZrC/SiC powders are obtained from diatomaceous earth and zircon powder. In this way the synthesized powders are obtained at a relatively low temperature due to good homogenization. Starting C/ZrSiO4 admixtures having different molar ratios (3:1, 4:1, 5:1 and 7:1) and C/SiO2 having ratios 1:1, 3:1, 4:1, and 7:1 were heated at temperatures between 1300 and 1600 degrees C in a controlled Ar flow atmosphere. The phase evolution was a function of the raw materials molar ratios and sintering temperature. The optimal parameters for the synthesis of SiC and ZrC/SiC powders were obtained. The results obtained by EDS analysis are in good agreement with those obtained by XRD analysis for the synthesized carbide powders. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. All rights reserved.

AB - The effect of sintering temperature on microstructure and density of the sintered mullite samples during the high pressure sintering process was investigated. High pressure sintering is one of the effective methods for producing fully dense bulk ceramics products enhancing densification and limiting grain growth. Synthesized mullite precursor powder was calcinated at 1200 °C for 4 h in order to obtain crystalline mullite powder that was confirmed by XRPD analysis. To determine the optimum sintering temperature for obtaining fully dense mullite samples crystalline mullite powder was compacted at 4.0 GPa in the temperature range 1100-1500 °C with step of 100 °C for 60 s. The measured densities of sintered samples rise with increasing the sintering temperature due to recrystallization of mullite particles. The particles of the starting powder are agglomerated while the microstructure of sintered samples reveals needle-like grains. The needles become elongated with increasing the temperature of sintering process and reach the grain length about 5 μm at 1400 and 1500 °C whereas the grains at 1500 °C are wider.
