AB - Resorcinol–formaldehyde (RF) cryogels were synthesized by sol–gel polycondensation of resorcinol with formaldehyde and freeze-drying was carried out with t-butanol. Carbon cryogel (CC) was obtained by pyrolyzing RF cryogels in an inert atmosphere to 950 °C. Nitrogen doped CCs (CCN) were synthesized by introducing melamine into RF precursor mixture solution to obtain nitrogen concentration 2, 6 and 10 wt.%. Material was characterized by elemental analysis, nitrogen adsorption– desorption measurements, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy, FT-IR Spectroscopy. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) was used to investigate capacitive and electrocatalytic properties. Conductivity measurement was also performed. Elemental analysis results confirmed presence of nitrogen in CCN samples in the range from 0.45 to 1.15 wt.%. Raman spectroscopy of the samples showed increase of D and G peak integrated intensity ratio (ID/IG) with nitrogen doping suggesting that the structural disorder as well as edge plane density increase, but according to similar ID/IG values for CCN samples, their share is not directly related to the amount of incorporated N. Characterization by nitrogen adsorption showed that overall specific surface and maximum mesopores are achieved in CCN sample with medium nitrogen concentration. Results of cyclic voltammetry experiments demonstrated maximum capacitance for CCN sample with smallest N wt.% indicating that narrow pore size distribution and high specific surface area are dominant factors to achieve good capacitive behavior. The relatively low doping level of nitrogen reached in CCN samples may be the reason for the incomplete reduction of oxygen to hydroxide and furthermore it turned out that presence of N in the structure of CC had a negligible effect on the otherwise relatively high conductivity of CC. © 2019 Elsevier B.V.

AB - A novel impregnation process for the fabrication of cotton nanocomposite with strong antimicrobial activity against antibiotics-resistant bacteria and yeast was developed. The impregnation process includes the sol–gel treatment of fabric with (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane in the first step, and synthesis of the CuO/Cu2O nanoparticles (NPs) on the fabric surface in the second step. The in situ synthesis of the CuO/Cu2O NPs was based on the adsorption of Cu2+-ions by the introduced amino groups of the sol–gel coating. The adsorbed Cu2+-ions are subsequently reduced in the alkaline solution of NaBH4. X-ray diffraction measurements confirmed the formation of CuO/Cu2O NPs. Scanning electron microscopy and atomic absorption spectrometry analyses indicate that the particle size, agglomeration, and amounts of synthesized NPs were highly affected by the initial concentration of CuSO4 solution. The toxicity of nanocomposites to human keratinocytes (HaCaT) and antimicrobial activity against Gram-negative Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, E. coli ATCC BAA 2469, and Klebsiella pneumoniae ATCC BAA 2146, and Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, S. aureus ATCC 43300 and yeast Candida albicans ATCC 24433 strongly depended on the copper content. In addition to excellent antimicrobial activity, controlled release of Cu2+-ions from the fabrics into physiological saline solution was obtained. © 2020 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

AB - In this work we investigated the influence of different deposition angles on the structural and magnetic properties of nickel thin films obtained by Glancing Angle Deposition. The films were deposited onto glass substrates at the angles of 65° and 85°. The structure of the films was studied by scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy and X-ray diffraction, while the magnetic properties were analyzed using magneto-optical Kerr effect microscopy (MOKE). It was found that the variation in the deposition angle has a great influence on the porosity, crystallinity and surface roughness of the Ni films. The obtained changes in microstructure were correlated with the variation in the magnetic properties. MOKE measurements revealed that the thinner films, deposited at the angle of 85°, have a 2.5 times higher coercivity in comparison with the films deposited at the lower angle, which can be ascribed to their higher porosity. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd

AB - The antioxidant properties of cool-climate Regent wines from Podkarpacie region, Poland were investigated. Total polyphenols, total flavonoids, total monomeric anthocyanins, trans-resveratrol concentration, radical scavenging ability using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) and total antioxidant capacity with TEAC and FRAP methods were measured. The average contents of the compounds determined for Regent wines were comparable to the respective data available in literature found for warm-climate wines. Correspondence Analysis of the data revealed the relation of total polyphenols content and antioxidant capacity and radical scavenging ability of studied wines, and in lesser extent correlation with total flavonoids content. The total monomeric anthocyanins content and resveratrol concentration were poorly related to the total polyphenols content and antioxidant capacity.

AB - The incorporation of trace amounts (<0.2%) of Co and Ni noticeably enhanced the catalytic activity of nitrogen-free ordered mesoporous carbon (OMC) towards oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). (Co,Ni)-doped OMCs were characterized by N2-adsorption measurements, X-ray powder diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy methods, and their ORR activity was estimated by voltammetry on rotating disk electrode in acidic and alkaline media. (Co,Ni)-doped OMCs show modest activities in acidic media, while the catalytic activity in alkaline media is rather high. The measured activities are compared to the Pt-based and Pt-free ORR catalysts reported in the literature. The number of electrons consumed per O2in metal-doped OMCs was found to vary between 2 and 4, which is advantageous in comparison to metal-free OMC. Also, the mass activities of metal-doped OMCs were found to be up to 2.5 times higher compared to that of metal-free OMC. We suggest that the ORR activity is governed by a balance between (i) textural properties, which determine the electrochemically accessible surface of the catalyst and which are influenced by the addition of a metal precursor, and (ii) novel active sites formed upon the introduction of metals into the carbon structure. In particular, our Density Functional Theory calculations suggest that Co and Ni atoms embedded into the single vacancies of graphene can activate the O2molecule and contribute to the decomposition of peroxide.

AB - Spider silk fibers, collected from Pholcus Phalangioides spider were used as a template for obtaining magnesium oxide (MgO, periclase) as well as magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)2, brucite) fibers. Magnesium oxide fibers were obtained in a simple manner by heat induced decomposition of magnesium salt (MgCl2) in the presence of the spider silk fibers, while magnesium hydroxidefibers were synthesized by hydration of MgO fibers at 50 °C, 70°C and 90 °C, for 48 and 96 h. According to Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), dimensions of spider silk fibers determined the dimension of synthesized MgO fibers, while for Mg(OH)2 fibers, the average diameter was increased with prolonging the hydration period. The surface of Mg(OH)2 fibers was noticed to be covered with brucite in a form of plates. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis showed that MgO fibers were single-phased (the pure magnesium oxide fibers were obtained), while Mg(OH)2 fibers were two- or single-phased brucite depending on incubation period, and/or incubation temperature.

AB - In this work, a new carbon paste electrode, prepared from nitrogen-doped hydrothermal carbon (CHTCN) was applied for the electrochemical detection and determination of carbendazim fungicide. CHTCN samples with the nominal nitrogen content 0.05-0.5 wt. % in glucose precursor were prepared by simple, low-cost synthesis with the accompanying carbonization to 1273 K. The presence of nitrogen in CHTCN samples was confirmed by elemental analysis. Characterization of CHTCN as material for carbon paste electrode was achieved by cyclic voltammetry measurement of the Fe(CN)(6)(3-/4-) redox couple. The results showed that best electrochemical response was obtained from the sample with a nominal nitrogen concentration of 0.1 wt. % and with tricresyl phosphate as a binder. During the development of a differential pulse stripping voltammetric method for carbendazim determination applying new electrode, the following experimental parameters were studied: the sort and amount of binding liquid, the effect of pH, accumulation potential and accumulation time. Under optimal conditions, the electrode offered linearity in the wide concentration range from 25 to 490 ng cm(-3) and an estimated detection limit of 1.21 ng cm(-3). Moreover, the electrode showed good stability, high selectivity and satisfactory anti-interference ability. Finally, the developed method was successfully applied for the determination of carbendazim traces in spiked tap and river water samples.

AB - In this work, Glancing Angle Deposition technique was used for obtaining nanostructured nickel thin film with vertical posts on glass substrate which was positioned 75 degrees with respect to the substrate normal and rotated with a suitable constant speed. The obtained nickel thin film was characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy, Atomic Force Microscopy and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy. It was found that the deposited thin film consists of 94.0 at.% of nickel. Magnetic properties of the deposited thin film were determined by Magneto-Optical Kerr Effect Microscopy. According to the obtained coercivity values, it can be concluded that the nickel thin film shows uniaxial magnetic anisotropy.

AB - The magnetic nanocomposites (MNCs), used as adsorbents for Cd2+ ions, were prepared by a co-precipitation method using both the untreated natural (SEP) and the partially acid-activated (ASEP) sepiolites as supports for magnetite. The synthesis conditions differed as follows: NaOH or NH3 was added in the SEP or the ASEP suspension before or after the addition of Fe3 and Fe2+. The SEP-based MNCs prepared using NaOH had a lower magnetization, but higher adsorption capacities than the MNCs synthesized using NH3. The order of the mixing of the reagents had a small influence on the properties of SEP-based MNCs, especially when NaOH was used for the synthesis. Due to acidity of the surface functional groups of the ASEP, the magnetic composite could be synthesized only when NH3 was added in the suspension of ASEP having Fe3+ and Fe2+ ions. Despite of the worse dispersibility of the magnetic particles, the adsorption capacityof the ASEP-based composite was higher than of the MNC with SEP prepared by the same procedure. All the MNCs showed a superparamagnetic behavior at room temperature and the adsorption capacities were higher than of pure compounds. The adsorption of Cd2+ on the composites was best fitted with the Sips model, which suggested the chemisorption on the heterogeneous surface at energetically non-uniform sites until a monolayer was formed. AB - Low intrinsic electronic conductivity is the main disadvantage of LiFePO4 when used as a cathode material in lithium ion batteries. The paper offers experimental proofs of the theoretical prediction that fluorine doping of LiFePO4 can enhance its electrical conductivity. The LiFePO4 and fluorine-doped LiFePO4 olivine type, carbon free powders are synthesized and examined. The crystal structure refinements in the Pnma space group reveal that doping with fluorine ions preserves the olivine structure, while reducing both the lattice parameters and the antisite defect, and increasing the crystallite size. A small amount of incorporated fluorine enhances the electrical conductivity from 4.6x10(-7) S cm(-1) to 2.3x10(-6) S cm(-1) and has a positive impact on the electrochemical performance. Several spectroscopy techniques (Mossbauer, FTIR, and Raman) reveal differences between the two powders and additionally support the findings of both the Rietveld refinement and the conductivity measurements.

AB - Nanoemulsion technique, based on Ouzo effect, was applied for synthesis of the pure and silver doped (2.5 and 5 mol%) calcium hydroxyapatite (HAp). After calcination at 500 degrees C fully crystallized powders were obtained. X-ray powder diffraction analysis accompanied with Rietveld refinement revealed that the synthesized powders were single-phase hydroxyapatite. Raman spectroscopy also confirmed that the synthesized powders were single-phase. The obtained HAp particles were spherical in shape and their sizes were in the nanometer range which was revealed by field emission scanning electron microscopy analysis (FESEM). The successful synthesis of the single-phase Ag doped HAp showed that nanoemulsion method is a simple technique for obtaining pure and doped hydroxyapatite nanospheres.

The successful synthesis of the single-phase Ag doped HAp showed that nanoemulsion method is a simple technique for obtaining pure and doped hydroxyapatite nanospheres.",

AB - Spider silk poses excellent mechanical properties, tenacity and elasticity and it has been used as a template for calcite mineralization to improve load bearing strength of osteoconductive calcite. The samples were obtained by mimicking biomineralization for five days in order to follow formation and growth of calcite on the surface of spider silk. Crystal phase was detected by XRD and FTIR spectroscopy. Microstructure, crystal size and its morphology were studied by means of FESEM. After two days of processing, pure calcite phase was obtained, and a size of the formed crystals increased with prolongation of biomineralization.

AB - Low intrinsic electronic conductivity is the main weakness of LiFePO4 for the use as cathode material in lithium ion batteries. Here is presented an experimental proof of the theoretical prediction that fluorine doping of LiFePO4 can enhance its electrical conductivity. LiFePO4 and fluorine-doped LiFePO4 olivine type, carbon-free powders are synthesized and examined. Crystal structure refinements in the space group Pnma reveal that doping with fluorine ions preserves olivine structure with the reduction of both the lattice parameters and the antisite defect, and an increase of a crystallite size. A small amount of incorporated fluorine enhances electrical conductivity from 4.6 × 10-7 Scm-1 to 2.3 × 10-6 Scm-1 and has positive impact on the electrochemical performances. Several spectroscopy techniques (Mössbauer, FTIR, and Raman) disclose differences between two powders and additionally support the findings of both the Rietveld refinement and the conductivity measurements.

AB - This study demonstrates that PEG-assisted hydrothermal synthesis provides a convenient and eco-friendly route to fabrication of mesoporous magnetite with enhanced capacity for phosphate removal, excellent potential for magnetic separation and good reusability. Adsorption of phosphate onto 4 laboratory prepared magnetite powders was investigated in a systematic manner. Powders were synthesized in poly(ethylene) glycol-free or assisted conditions (PEGs 400 and 20,000 at varied PEG/water ratio), and characterized in terms of crystalline structure, and magnetic, morphological, textural, and acid-base properties. PEG acted as a powerful pore forming agent, the PEG/water ratio being the key factor in developing the surface area and mesoporosity of magnetite. Uptake capacity for phosphates increased with an increase in surface area and pore volume. PEG 20,000 at a ratio of 3:1 gave the best result. This mesoporous (D-max = 11 nm), nano-scale ( LT 10 nm) magnetite was ca. 9 times more efficient than nonporous micrometric powder derived from PEG-free synthesis (Langmuir maximum capacity, q(m) = 26.2 vs. 3.0 mg g(-1)). The adsorption was pH-dependent, in accord with variations in zeta potential of magnetite. Opposite shifts of isoelectric point and point of zero charge confirmed specific adsorption of phosphates at water/magnetite interface which proceeded via replacement of surface hydroxyls and sulfates. AB - Simple route was used for synthesis of nanostructured titania samples doped with 3 and 6 mol% of Cr3+ Titanium(IV)-isopropoxide and water were used as starting materials and as an agents for controlling hydrolysis and condensation reactions. The phase evolution of titania (TiO2) was followed by calcination at 400, 600 and 800 degrees C. The synthesized powders were examined by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Single-phase anatase was obtained at low temperature (400 degrees C) in all cases. The photocatalytic activity of TiO2 doped nanopowders was evaluated by the photocatalytic degradation of crystal violet in aqueous solution. The present study indicates that this simple synthesis method can be an effective route to produce efficient photoactive doped anatase nanopowders. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. AB - Carbon cryogel/ceria composite, with 10 wt.% of ceria, was synthesized by mixing of ceria and carbon cryogel (CC). The sample was characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy, nitrogen adsorption and X-ray diffraction. The adsorption of arsenic(III) ions from aqueous solutions on carbon cryogel/ceria nanocomposite was studied as a function of time, solution pH and As(III) ion concentration. The results are correlated with previous investigations of adsorption mechanism of arsenic(III) on carbon cryogel. Adsorption dose experiments showed that the mass of the adsorbent was reduced for 20 times, in comparison with pure CC, for the same amount of adsorbed arsenic(III) ions. BET isotherm was used to interpret the experimental data for modelling liquid phase adsorption.

AB - Nanocrystalline hexagonal boron nitride powders (h-BN) were synthesized from urea and boric acid followed by pirolysis and subsequent heat treatment in nitrogen atmosphere. Materials have been analyzed by means of X-ray diffraction, Photoluminescence and Field emission electron microscopy methods. Obtained results show that starting h-BN powder, synthesized at 750 degrees C, is composed of similar to 11 layer crystallites with average crystallite thickness and crystallite lateral size of 3.94 and 10.4 nm, respectively. A broad emission and intense luminescence intensity were observed due to the large atomic disorder. Higher annealing temperature increases crystallite size and turbostratic h-BN transforms to well crystallized h-BN at 1500 degrees C. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. AB - In this work, nickel (Ni) thin films were deposited by electron beam evaporation of Ni using Glancing Angle Deposition technique onto the glass substrate with the thickness varied from 25 nm to 150 nm. Characterization of obtained Ni films was performed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and by Magneto-Optical Kerr effect measurements (MOKE). The effect of thickness on structural, chemical and magnetic properties of nickel films has been studied. Observed changes in microstructure were correlated with the variation in magnetic parameters obtained by MOKE measurements. It was found that for thinner Ni films, the enhancement of coercivity is due to the surface roughness of Ni films, while for thicker films the observed asymmetry of coercivity is due to the mechanism of column size growth. AB - The key parameters related to cathode materials for commercial use are a high specific capacity, good cycling stability, capacity retention at high current rates, as well as the simplicity of the synthesis process. This study presents a facile synthesis of a composite cathode material, Li2FeSiO4 with carbon, under extreme conditions: rapid heating, short dwell at 750 A degrees C and subsequent quenching. The water-soluble polymer methylcellulose was used both as an excellent dispersing agent and a carbon source that pyrolytically degrades to carbon, thereby enabling the homogeneous deployment of the precursor compounds and the control of the Li2FeSiO4 particle growth from the earliest stage of processing. X-ray powder diffraction reveals the formation of Li2FeSiO4 nanocrystallites with a monoclinic structure in the P2(1)/n space group (#14). The composites electrochemical performance as a cathode material in Li-ion batteries was examined. The influence of the amount of methylcellulose on the microstructural, morphological, conductive, and electrochemical properties of the obtained powders has been discussed. It has been shown that the overall electrochemical performance is improved with an increase of carbon content, through both the decrease of the mean particle diameter and the increase of electrical conductivity.

AB - Extensive use of organophosphate pesticides (OPs) invokes development of efficient procedures for their removal from the environment. By introducing low levels ( LT 1 at%) of B, N or P into the structure of mesoporous carbons, we have produced a series of materials with different surface chemical composition, textural properties and level of structural disorder. These adsorbents were applied for removal of dimethoate and its oxo-analogue omethoate from aqueous solutions under batch adsorption conditions and by filtration using modified nylon membrane filters. Adsorption capacities up to 164 mg g(-1) were measured, with OPs uptake typically above 80% for dimethoate concentration as high as 5 x 10(-3) mol dm(-3). After the adsorption, neurotoxic effects of OP-containing water samples were significantly reduced or completely removed. The level of structural disorder was identified as a key parameter for efficient removal of dimethoate and omethoate while in the filtration experiments surface area of adsorbents also played an important role. While the presented research appeals to new fundamental studies of OP-carbon surface interactions, it also indicates a possible strategy in designing new efficient adsorbents for OPs removal from water.

AB - Ceria coating is formed on Al from the ceria sol prepared exclusively by forced hydrolysis of Ce(NO3)(4), in order to test their ability to protect Al from corrosion. The characterization of sol-gel-processed ceria coating and coating/Al assembly brings new issues on Al corrosion and protection caused by unique properties of the sol-gel coating. The corrosion behaviour of bare Al and Al/CeO2 is investigated by the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) during the exposure to NaCl aqueous solution. The morphology and composition of the samples are examined by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy. EIS data showed greater corrosion resistance of CeO2-coated aluminium in comparison to bare Al at long exposure times. CeO2 coating does not hinder completely the corrosion processes on Al. The Al beneath CeO2 coating is subjected to intrinsic formation of a uniform protective coating/Al interphase, cross-linked by AlO(OH) fibre-like structures. They appear created by corrosive medium from the coating reversely gelled by NaCl solution. As the fibre network is created during exposure, Al becomes better protected than by spontaneous formation of porous passive layer of Al(OH)(3) on bare aluminium. Sol-gel ceria coatings thus improve corrosion resistance of aluminium during prolonged exposure to corrosive medium.

AB - Ordered mesoporous carbon, volume-doped up to 3w.% with Pt, Ru and Pt-Ru nanoparticles was synthesized by evaporation-induced self-assembly method, under acidic conditions. The content of incorporated metal was determined by EDX analysis. The X-ray diffractometry confirmed the existence of highly dispersed metallic phases in doped samples. Specific surface area was determined by N-2-physisorption measurements to range between 452 and 545m(2) g(-1). Raman spectroscopy of investigated materials indicated highly disordered carbon structure with crystallite sizes around 1.4 nm. In a form of thin-layer electrode on glassy carbon support, in 0.1M KOH solution, the prepared materials displayed high activity toward oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in alkaline media, with onset potentials more positive than -0.10 V vs. SCE. The kinetics of O-2 reduction was found to be affected by both the specific surface area and the concentration of metal dopants. The ethanol tolerance of (Pt, Ru)-doped OMCs was found to be higher than that of common Pt/C ORR catalysts. Presented study provides a new route for the synthesis of active and selective ORR catalysts in alkaline media, being competitive with, or superior to, the existing ones in terms of performance and price. AB - The room temperature Na-ion secondary battery has been under focus lately due to its feasibility to compete against the already well-established Li-ion secondary battery. Transition metal oxides of general formula NaxMO2 have been investigated as potential cathode materials for sodium batteries. Layered NaxCoO2 is synthesized via solid-state method at 900 ºC in air atmosphere. Fluorine doping of the as-prepared powder is established by the use of ammonium hydrogen difluoride (NH4HF2) as a fluorinating agent. The fluorination takes place only at low temperature (200 ºC), while the treatment at higher temperatures (≥ 400 ºC) facilitates the formation of NaF. It is shown that various and controllable amounts of fluorine can be successfully incorporated into the structure. Finally, the effects of fluorine doping on both structural and electrochemical properties are examined.
