Characterization analysis of raw and pyrolyzed plane tree seed (Platanus orientalis L.) samples for its application in carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology

AB  - Raw and pyrolyzed samples of the plane tree seeds (PTS) were tested by various advanced analytical techniques including simultaneous TG-DSC technique, FTIR analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, Raman spectroscopy analysis, GC-MS (gas chromatography-mass spectrometry) analysis and scanning electron microscope analysis, for its characterization procedure and the pre-treatments in possible application in CCS. Nondestructive analytical method (XRD) showed that raw material is typical for carbon-rich material, where was identified increase in interlayer spacing within graphite structure. The XRD results of pyrolyzed sample at 850 A degrees C showed a sudden loss in interlayer spacing. Spectroscopic analyses of pyrolyzed sample demonstrated the presence of typical aromatic structures found in amorphous carbon. Results indicate the high levels of the growth in basal planes of graphite structure in pyrolyzed sample. It was established that integrated reaction model parameters for pyrolysis of untreated PTS sample realistically describe active temperature period required for charcoal forming, under non-isothermal conditions. It was found that mechanical treatment of material results in increase in the number of chemical compounds. Micrograph showed the presence of variety of shapes and structures, where after pyrolysis, some dissipated pores were detected. One of these pores was partially blocked in some places, depending on the size of surface area. The results showed that the resulting char has very good features for further activation process, while the PTS would represent a good candidate in its application in the CCS.

AB  - In presented paper, influence of temperature, precursor concentration and different hydroxides on properties of activated carbon obtained from saccharose were investigated. The samples were prepared by hydrothermal treatment and activated using KOH, NaOH and LiOH. Two saccharose concentrations (0.5, 1.0 mol/dm3) and three temperatures (160, 200, 240 ºC) were changed in hydrothermal treatment. Activation processes were performed at 750 ºC under N2 atmosphere. Samples were characterized by X-ray powder diffractometry, elemental analysis, N2 adsorption-desorption measurements, Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry, scanning electron microscopy and thermal analysis. The obtained samples were tested for potential application in dyes removal from water solutions.
AB  - У представљеном раду испитани су утицај температуре, концентрације полазног материјала и различитих хидроксида на својства активираних угљеничних материјала добијених из сахарозе. Узорци су припремљени хидротермалним третманом и активирани помоћу KOH, NaOH и LiOH. Две различите концентрације воденог раствора сахарозе (0,5 1,0 mol/dm3) и три температуре (160, 200, 240 ºC) су примењене у хидротермалном третману. Процеси активације су изведени на 750 ºC у атмосфери азота. Узорци су карактерисани рендгендском дифрактометријском анализом, елементарном анализом, адсорпционо-десорпционим мерењем азота, инфрацрвеном спектрометријом са Фуријеовом трансформацијом, скенирајућом електронском микроскопијом и термијском анализом. Добијени узорци су такође тестирани за потенцијалну примену у уклањању боја из водених раствора.

Hydrothermal Synthesized and Alkaline Activated Carbons Prepared from Glucose and Fructose—Detailed Characterization and Testing in Heavy Metals and Methylene Blue Removal

AB  - In the presented paper, activated carbons were prepared from fructose and glucose, and activating agents (KOH, NaOH, LiOH) by hydrothermal treatment (HTC) treatment. After preparation, samples were characterized in details. Different techniques were used: x-ray powder diffraction analysis, Raman spectral analysis, elemental analysis, and determination of textural and morphological properties. Obtained results showed dependence of investigated properties and the nature of precursors (glucose or fructose) as well as the type of hydroxides used as activating agents. After characterization, samples were tested as materials for heavy metals (Pb2+, Cd2+and Zn2+) and methylene blue removal. Also, adsorption experiments were performed on wastewaters taken from tailings of the lead and zinc mine and kinetic of the methylene blue removal was studied. The factors which distinguished the KOH activated samples were high yield (~14%), content of organic carbon (63–74%), porosity and specific surface area (SBET~700–1360 m2/g), a low degree of the crystal phase, indications that potassium ions may be included in heavy metals removal, good removal of the heavy metal ions (~47–59 mg/g for Pb2+, ~21–27 mg/g for Cd2+and ~6–10 mg/g for Zn2+) and fast (~10–30 min) and good methylene blue (~60–200 mg/g) removal.

AB  - Predmet istraživanja ove doktorske disertacije bio je sinteza, usavršavanje i primena novih ugljeničnih materijala optimalnih adsorpcionih i tehno-ekonomskih karakteristika korišćenjem hidrotermalne metode sinteze, kao i ispitivanje uticaja aktivacije na krajnja svojstva i mogućnost primene dobijenih materijala. Hidrotermalnom metodom se, iz saharida kao polaznih materijala, sintetizuju „hidročađi”, materijali koji sadrže veći udeo ugljenika od saharida, ali nisu aktivni. Naknadnom aktivacijom hidročađi, korišćenjem različitih hidroksida, dobijaju se aktivirani ugljenični materijali. Dobijeni aktivirani ugljenični materijali ispitivani su u oblasti zaštite životne sredine kao adsorbenti u sistemima za uklanjanje teških metala i zagađujućih boja (metilen plave i metil oranž) iz otpadnih voda. Takođe, ispitivane su termijske osobine dobijenih materijala za primenu u sistemima za skladištenje električne energije.Uticaj parametara hidrotermalne sinteze i uslova aktivacije sintetizovanih materijala ispitivan je variranjem temperature hidrotermalnog procesa, vremena zadržavanja i koncentracije vodenog rastvora polaznog materijala kao i promenom temperature i vrste aktivacije, aktivirajućeg agensa i odnosa količine aktivirajućeg agensa i materijala koji se aktivira.Izvršena je karakterizacija dobijenih uzoraka aktiviranih ugljeničnih materijala, različitih fizičkih i površinskih osobina, na osnovu kojih je izvršen odabir najefikasnijeg uzorka za uklanjanje datih zagađivača iz životne sredine.Postupak sinteze aktiviranih ugljeničnih materijala sastojao se od pripreme materijala hidrotermalnom obradom vodenih rastvora saharida (fruktoze, glukoze i saharoze) pri blagim uslovima (na 160, 200 i 240 °C), a potom mehanohemijskom aktivacijom dobijene hidročađi uz pomoć KOH, NaOH i LiOH i poređenjem dobijenih rezultata...
AB  - The subject of the research of the presented doctoral dissertation was synthesis, improvement and application of active carbon materials of optimal adsorption and techno-economic characteristics, obtained by hydrothermal method. Also, the influence of activation on the final properties and the possibility active carbon materials application have been studied. The synthesis of active carbon materials was carried out applying hydrothermal method using saccharides as starting materials, which represent the first step in the synthesis process. In this step, carbon containing samples were derived, but they had no active properties. Carbon containing materials obtained after hydrothermal process were called "hydrochar". Afterwards, they were activated by chemical activation process with various hydroxides, and final samples with specified active features were synthesized. The application of activated carbon materials was found in the field of environmental protection as an adsorbent in the systems with heavy metal and polluting dyes removal from wastewater. Testing of thermal properties of materials for use in electrical energy storage systems was also investigated.In order to examine the influence of the parameters of both the hydrothermal method and activation process, experiments were conducted by varying following parameters: temperature of hydrothermal process, starting material, retention time, concentration of the aqueous solution of the starting material as well as type of activation agent. Carbon materials samples of different physical and surface characteristics were characterized and the most efficient sample was selected for removal of given environmental pollutants.The process of synthesis of activated carbon materials consisted of the preparation of the material by hydrothermal treatment of aqueous solutions of saccharides (fructose, glucose and sucrose) under gentle conditions (at 160, 200 and 240 ° C), followed by mechanochemical activation by three hydroxides KOH, NaOH and LiOH and comparison of obtained results were examined...

Afterwards, they were activated by chemical activation process with various hydroxides, and final samples with specified active features were synthesized. The application of activated carbon materials was found in the field of environmental protection as an adsorbent in the systems with heavy metal and polluting dyes removal from wastewater. Testing of thermal properties of materials for use in electrical energy storage systems was also investigated.In order to examine the influence of the parameters of both the hydrothermal method and activation process, experiments were conducted by varying following parameters: temperature of hydrothermal process, starting material, retention time, concentration of the aqueous solution of the starting material as well as type of activation agent. Carbon materials samples of different physical and surface characteristics were characterized and the most efficient sample was selected for removal of given environmental pollutants.The process of synthesis of activated carbon materials consisted of the preparation of the material by hydrothermal treatment of aqueous solutions of saccharides (fructose, glucose and sucrose) under gentle conditions (at 160, 200 and 240 ° C), followed by mechanochemical activation by three hydroxides KOH, NaOH and LiOH and comparison of obtained results were examined...",

AB  - Carotenoids are known for their lower environmental pollution, lower costs, shorter extraction time compared to regular extraction methods and higher extraction efficiency. Ultrasound has significant advantages in the extraction of a great number of biologically active compounds including carotenoids. Benefits of using ultrasound for extraction of various compounds are numerous and include effective mixing and micro-mixing, more efficient energy transfer, reduced thermal and concentration gradients, reduced temperature. The aim of this work was to investigate the influence of two-frequency ultrasound main parameters such as ultrasonic intensity, sonication time, and temperature. Application of two-frequency ultrasound (simultaneous influence of ultrasound with frequency of 20-46 kHz, intensity of 1.5-2.5 W/cm(2) and frequency of 1.0-2.0 MHz, intensity of 2.0- 3.0 W/cm(2)) raises the percentage of beta-carotene extraction from biomass of the fungus Blakeslea trispora from 90-92% up to 98-99% in comparison with one frequency ultrasound. The recommended oil temperature for the extraction process is 35 degrees C, because lower temperature leads to reduction of percentage of beta-carotene extraction, and higher temperature promotes unjustified increase of expenditure of energy.

AB  - Activated carbons (ACs) were successfully prepared using plane tree seed (PTS) as a cheap and renewable raw material. The plane tree seeds were firstly treated combining magnetic (MM) and ultrasonic mixing (USM) during 0.5, 1 and 3 h in 1 M, 3 M and 6 M of H3PO4 solutions, and then activated at 260 degrees C during 20 h (low temperature hydrothermal carbonization-low HTC) in above mentioned solutions of the same molarity. The influence of combined mixing and activation processes on physical, structural and morphological properties, and their optimization was studied by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), Raman spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis.

AB  - In this work, plane tree seed-based activated carbons (AC) were used for possible application in carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS) technology. After carbonization process at 850 degrees C, resulting preliminary ACs were activated at various temperatures. The high levels of the growth in basal planes of graphite structure in carbonized sample were detected. Also, it was found that the samples activated at 750 and 850 degrees C have a lower graphitization degree and contained substantially disordered sections and defects, which are characteristic of typical amorphous porous carbons. Process modeling has shown that the CO2 sorption can be described by multi-parametric continuous distributed reactivity model. Analysis showed the occurrence of gas reduction process, involving gibberellic acid and coenzymes which can produce the methane gas. The highly ordered arrangement of the gas molecules on the carbons was assumed. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The relationship of asymmetrical shape of CV curves with the porosity of samples has served to better understand some unclear issues related to the complex mechanism of charge storage. The sample activated at 850 degrees C for 2 h displayed the best behavior. At a high scan rate of 300 mV s(-1), its capacitance, amounted to similar to 26.8 mu F cm(-2) 19.69 mu F cm(-2) and 25.8 mu Fcm(-2) in KOH, Na2SO4, and H2SO4 solutions, respectively. AB  - The present study reports a new facile methodology for the synthesis of symmetrical and asymmetrical thioureas by a one-pot reaction of the required amine, carbon disulfide and an oxidant, i.e., hydrogen peroxide, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA)/sodium percarbonate system or air. The structures of the synthesized compounds were confirmed by IR, H-1- and C-13-NMR and MS methods. A reaction mechanism is proposed based on the isolation of reaction intermediate and the determination of their structure. The synthetic benefits of the presented methods are reflected in the operational simplicity, mild reaction conditions, short reaction times, solvent recycling, high purity and yield of the products, absence of dangerous by-products and technological applicability on an industrial scale. Considering the commercial importance of thioureas, it should be emphasized that implementation of the optimal synthesis of thiourea determined in this study for industrial production could provide a concurrent alternative to the existing technologies in use.
