AB - Concerning the particular nutritive value of honeydew honey compared to blossom honey, and small number of studies defining botanical origin of honeydew honey, comprehensive analysis of phenolic profile of 64 honeydew honey samples of specific botanical origin was performed. Two advanced techniques of liquid chromatography hyphenated with mass spectrometry were used for identification of a total of 52 compounds and quantification of 25 of them. Pattern recognition analysis applied on data on phenolic compounds content confirmed that quercetin, naringenin, caffeoylquinic acid, hydroxyphenylacetic acid, apigenin and genistein, could be considered as potential markers of botanical origin of honeydew honey. Spectroscopic and electrochemical approaches were applied for the evaluation of the antioxidant capacity. Quercus sps. samples, Quercus frainetto and Quercus ilex, showed high biological activity and specific chemical composition. Additionally, cyclic voltammetry profiles were used for characterization and natural clustering of honeydew honey for the first time. © 2018 Elsevier Ltd

AB - In recent years, the potential of Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy coupled with different chemometric tools in food analysis has been established. This technique is rapid, low cost, and reliable and requires little sample preparation. In this work, 130 Serbian unifloral honey samples (linden, acacia, and sunflower types) were analyzed using attenuated total reflectance infrared spectroscopy (ATR-IR). For each spectrum, 64 scans were recorded in wavenumbers between 4000 and 500 cm(-1) and at a spectral resolution of 4 cm(-1). These spectra were analyzed using principal component analysis (PCA), and calculated principal components were then used for support vector machine (SVM) training. In this way, the pattern-recognition tool is obtained for building a classification model for determining the botanical origin of honey. The PCA was used to analyze results and to see if the separation between groups of different types of honeys exists. Using the SVM, the classification model was built and classification errors were acquired. It has been observed that this technique is adequate for determining the botanical origin of honey with a success rate of 98.6%. Based on these results, it can be concluded that this technique offers many possibilities for future rapid qualitative analysis of honey.

AB - Mathematical models which define the effects of molecular properties on the retention and lipophilicity and prediction lipophilicity of some Schiff base ligands, and complexes with copper(II) and nickel(II) were developed. Following molecular descriptors were calculated: molecular volume, surface area, energy of the highest occupied/lowest unoccupied molecular orbital, dipole moment, refractivity, polarizability, hydrophilic-lipophilic balance, and lipophilicity parameters, which are correlated with chromatographically determinated lipophilicity parameters. A multiple linear regression procedure was used to derive the models. High agreement between experimental and predicted values obtained in this validation procedure indicates the good quality of the derived models.

AB - Purpose of this work was to synthesize several cis-/trans- isomer pairs of the platinum(II) complexes, and study the extent and the mode of their antiproliferative activity on HeLa cells. Six platinum(II) isomer pairs have a general formula cis-/trans-[PtA(2) X-2] where A is ligand: ammonia (NH3), pyridine (Py); and X is ligand: chloride ion (Cl-), bromide ion (Br-), iodide ion (I-), thiocyanato, ion (SCN-); four compounds have different structural formulas, and these are cis-/trans-[Pt(NH2OH)(2) (NH3)(2)]Cl-2, and cis-/trans- Pt(Gly)(2), where Gly is bidentate glycinato ligand. Results of the MTT assay, showed that six cis- and one trans-platinum(II) complexes exhibited cytotoxicity (IC50) ranging between 5 and 33 muM. Most of the cis-platinum(II) isomers caused significant alteration of cell cycle phases progression, and induced apoptosis in degree that varied among different compounds, as evaluated using flowcytometry and morphological study. Spectrophotometric analysis (AAS) indicated that there is no correlation between intracellular platinum(II) accumulation and cytotoxicity of tested complexes.
