AB - The effect of nitrogen addition (1-20 %) on atmospheric argon DC arc plasma parameters was investigated. Nitrogen was added to three initial plasma gas compositions: pure argon gas, argon gas with water aerosol, and argon gas with water aerosol containing 0.5 % KCl. Admixtures of nitrogen from 1 up to 10 % (in the case of Ar-N-2-water aerosol plasma) or up to 5 % (in the presence of 0.5 % KCl) produced a more contracted discharge, with larger gradients of electron number density and temperature, as compared to plasma without molecular gas addition. The opposite effect was observed in gas mixtures with 20 % of nitrogen. In that case, the arc core was expanded, and the radial profile of electron density and temperature became flatter as compared to the case of pure argon plasma. The changes in the radial structure of the discharge could be explained by increased thermal conductivity of mixed gas plasma and the presence of molecular ions. Increasing nitrogen content brings plasma closer to thermal equilibrium. To evaluate the effect of nitrogen upon analytic performance of the arc source, limits of detection (LODs) were measured for Zn, Cu, Li, and Rb. In plasma without KCl, the addition of nitrogen resulted in lowering of LODs for Cu, Li and Rb, while the opposite was observed for Zn. In the presence of KCl the addition of nitrogen had little or no effect on LODs for Cu, Li and Rb, while detection limits for Zn were increased.

AB - Desorption of metals K, Al, Ca, Mg, Fe, Ba, Zn, Mn, Cu and Sr from Cetraria islandica (L.) with solutions whose composition was similar to that of acid rain, was investigated. Desorption of metals from the lichen was performed by five successive desorption processes. Solution mixtures containing H2SO4, HNO3 and H2SO4-HNO3 were used for desorption. Each solution had three different pH values: 4.61, 5.15 and 5.75, so that the desorptions were performed with nine different solutions successively five times, always using the same solution volume. The investigated metals can be divided into two groups. One group was comprised of K, Ca and Mg, which were desorbed in each of the five desorption processes at all pH values used. The second group included Al, Fe, Zn, Ba, Mn and Sr; these were not desorbed in each individual desorption and not at all pH values, whereas Cu was not desorbed at all under any circumstances. Using the logarithmic dependence of the metal content as a function of the desorption number, it was found that potassium builds two types of links and is connected with weaker links in lichen. Potassium is completely desorbed, 80% in the first desorption, and then gradually in the following desorptions. Other metals are linked with one weaker link (desorption 1-38%) and with one very strong link (desorption below the metal detection limit).

AB - Optical emission spectroscopy was applied for investigation of copper plasma induced by a nanosecond transversely excited atmospheric CO2 laser, operating at 10.6 mu m. The effect of the background gas (air, Ar, He and N-2) and pressure (1-25 mbar) on plasma formation was examined. The plasma shielding effect was more pronounced for background gases with lower ionization potential than for He. The increase of He pressure from 1 to 25 mbar resulted in fivefold increase of Cu atomic line intensity.

AB - Intention of this work was to obtain porous silicon dioxide ceramics by using boric acid as an inexpensive additive at low forming pressure and low sintering temperature. Starting raw material, smectite clay from surface coal mine Kolubara, Serbia, was purified from organic and inorganic impurities by using heat and chemical treatment. Boric acid was used as binding and sintering aid in amount of 0.5, 1 and 2 wt%. Powder was compacted by using different pressures: 40, 60 and 80 MPa. Pressed samples were sintered at 850, 1000, 1150, and 1300 degrees C for 4 h in air. A relatively high porosity of nearly 40% is obtained for the samples pressed at 40, 60 and 80 MPa and sintered at 1000 degrees C. Median pore size diameters are in the range of macroporous up to 0.2 mu m and 10 mu m in the samples sintered at 1150 and 1300 degrees C, respectively. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scaning electron microscopy (SEM), and porosimetry measurements were employed to characterize the phases and microstructure of the obtained ceramics. The relations between mechanical characteristics of samples (Young modulus and Poisson ratio) and content of boric acid were studied. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l.

AB - In low temperature argon arc plasma, emission spectral lines of different analytes have characteristic radial distributions with emission maxima distributed over a wide plasma region, from the arc axis toward the arc periphery. It was assumed that the occurrence of emission maxima is a result of collective action of factors that control vaporization, dissociation, excitation, ionization and analyte transport. A statistical analysis was used to reveal a correlation between these various factors and a radial position of maximum emission. A regression analysis was used both for predictive and explanatory purposes: a model was built that successfully predicted analyte spatial emission characteristics, based on their physical properties and local plasma parameters, and a relative importance of proposed predictors was estimated. AB - In this study, the influence of nitrogen gas addition on argon plasma electron
number density was investigated. The plasma source is a wall stabilized direct
current arc burning in argon at atmospheric pressure with continual water aerosol
supply. To the argon gas carrying water aerosol a variable amounts (4, 8 and 11%)
of nitrogen was added. The addition of the molecular gas was carried out by
increasing the flow rate of the N2 and decreasing that of Ar, so that the total flow
rate of the mixed gas was constant 2.7 Lmin-1. The arc was operating in the current
intensity range 4 to 11 A. The electron number density was calculated from the
measured Stark profiles of Hβ 486.13 nm spectral line at the arc axis, for different
arc currents. The radial distribution of electron number density was obtained from
the measured radial profiles of Hβ line. The addition of the molecular gas to the
argon plasma resulted in considerable changes in electron number density.

AB - Monophase silver-doped hydroxyapatite (AgxCa10-x(PO4)(6)(OH)(2); 0.002 LT = x LT = 0.04) nanoparticles were prepared using a neutralization method and investigated with respect to potential medical applications. This method consists of dissolving Ag2O in solution of H3PO4, and the slow addition to suspension of Ca(OH)(2) was applied for the purpose of homogenous distribution of silver ions. Characterization studies from XRD, TEM and FTIR spectra showed that obtained crystals are monophase hydroxyapatites and that particles of all samples are of nano size, with average length of 70nm and about 15-25nm in diameter. Antimicrobial studies have demonstrated that all silver-doped hydroxyapatite samples exhibit excellent antimicrobial activity in vitro against the following pathogens: Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Candida albicans. The hydroxyapatite sample with the highest content of silver has shown the highest antimicrobial activity; killed all cells of E. coli and brought to more than 99% reduction in viable counts of S. aureus and C. albicans. The atomic force microscopic studies illustrate that silver-doped hydroxyapatite sample causes considerable morphological changes of microorganism cells which might be the cause of cells death. Hemolysis ratios of the silver-doped hydroxyapatite samples were below 3%, indicating good blood compatibility and that are promising as biomaterials. AB - The effect of potassium addition on the radial distribution of temperature and electron number density in a U-shaped direct current (dc) argon plasma operating at different arc currents has been studied by optical emission spectroscopic techniques and the power interruption method. Spatially resolved electron number densities (n(e)) have been determined from measured radial profiles of Balmer-H(beta) spectral line. The obtained electron number densities have been used for thermodynamic temperature (T(LTE)) evaluation with the assumption that the arc plasma is in a state of local thermodynamic equilibrium. The excitation temperatures (T(exc)) have been determined from the absolute integral emissivity of the argon line at 430.01 nm. For heavy particle temperature (T(h)) evaluations we have used a power interruption method. The obtained results have shown that an addition of KCl decreases both electron number density and temperature of the arc column. The magnitude of such an influence on plasma parameters increases with an increase in the KCl concentration and decreases with an increase in the arc current.

AB - A pulse-modulated direct-current argon arc burning at atmospheric pressure has been investigated by analyzing temporally and spatially resolved analyte emission responses in a millisecond time domain. The arc current was a rectangular pulse modulated between 9 and 3.5A with a modulation period of 250 ms and a low current interval of up to 50 ms. Both positive and negative step modulation in current strongly affected the analyte emission. Delayed responses of representative analytes with ionization energies ranging from 6.5 to 10 eV have been studied. Depending on the analyte ionization energy and the plasma zone observed, a sudden current change was in most cases followed by a line intensity increase. The magnitude of this increase is correlated with changes in the ionization-recombination balance, the extent of demixing and the gas dynamics processes invoked by a current modulation. For analytes with medium and low ionization energies a current drop is accompanied by a large increase in signal-to-background ratio, which opens up the possibility of the use of arc current modulation for sensitivity improvement.

AB - Enhancement of emission line intensities by induced oscillations of direct current (DC) arc plasma with continuous aerosol sample supply was investigated using multivariate statistics. Principal component analysis (PCA) was employed to evaluate enhancements of 34 atomic spectral lines belonging to 33 elements and 35 ionic spectral lines belonging to 23 elements. Correlation and classification of the elements were done not only by a single property such as the first ionization energy, but also by considering other relevant parameters. Special attention was paid to the influence of the oxide bond strength in an attempt to clarify/predict the enhancement effect. Energies of vaporization, atomization, and excitation were also considered in the analysis. In the case of atomic lines, the best correlation between the enhancements and first ionization energies was obtained as a negative correlation, with weak consistency in grouping of elements in score plots. Conversely, in the case of ionic lines, the best correlation of the enhancements with the sum of the first ionization energies and oxide bond energies was obtained as a positive correlation, with four distinctive groups of elements. The role of the gas-phase atom-oxide bond energy in the entire enhancement effect is underlined. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - Geochemical analyses for trace Cr have been made on a representative sample of a
typical hydrothermal dickite filling vein at Nowa Ruda. The mineralogy of the
sample is comparatively simple, dickite being the principal component (ca. 91% of
total sample). Geochemical fractionation and inductively coupled plasma-optical
emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) indicate that most (>96 % of total metal) of Cr
reside in the dickite. The combination of geochemical and spectroscopic tools
applied on Cr3+ allow one to specify the Eh (>0.4 V, highly oxidizing) and pH
(≤4.0, highly acidic) of the solution during the formation of dickite from the Nowa
Ruda Basin. We suggest that hot hydrothermal waters leached the surrounding
varieties of gabbroids enriched in Cr for the dickite-forming solution.

abstract = "Geochemical analyses for trace Cr have been made on a representative sample of a
typical hydrothermal dickite filling vein at Nowa Ruda. The mineralogy of the
sample is comparatively simple, dickite being the principal component (ca. 91% of
total sample). Geochemical fractionation and inductively coupled plasma-optical
emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) indicate that most (>96 % of total metal) of Cr
reside in the dickite. The combination of geochemical and spectroscopic tools
applied on Cr3+ allow one to specify the Eh (>0.4 V, highly oxidizing) and pH
(≤4.0, highly acidic) of the solution during the formation of dickite from the Nowa
Ruda Basin. We suggest that hot hydrothermal waters leached the surrounding
varieties of gabbroids enriched in Cr for the dickite-forming solution.",

AB - Plasma of argon stabilized arc column, in a current range 3-11 A, is investigated using emission spectrometric diagnostic techniques. Temperatures are evaluated using several methods: argon line to adjacent recombinational continuum intensity ratio, absolute emissivity of argon line, measurement of electron number density, and power interruption. Electron number density is evaluated from absolute emissivity of recombinational continuum. The difference between electron T-e and heavy particle T-h temperature ranged from 4500K for 3 A to 2300K for 11 A arc current. By comparing the present with the previously obtained results, using the same arc device but with the introduction of water aerosol, it is concluded that water aerosol reduces the clifference T-e - T-h and brings plasma closer to the partial thermodynamic equilibrium state.

AB - Extraction of metals (K, Al, Ca, Mg, Fe, Cu, Ba, Zn, Mn and Sr) from dry Cetraria islandica (L.) Ach. lichen was performed using solutions similar to acid rain (solution A - H2SO4-HNO3-(NH4)(2)SO4 and solution B - H2SO4-HNO3-(NH4)(2)SO4-NH4NO3). The pH values of these solutions were 2.00, 2.58, 2.87, 3.28, and 3.75. Five consecutive extractions were performed with each solution. In all solutions, the extracted metal content, except Cu and Ca, was the highest in the first extract. The highest percentage of the metals desorbed in the first extraction was obtained using solutions with low pH values, 2.00, 2.58, and 2.87. The iowest percentage in the first extraction was obtained using solutions with pH 3.28 and pH 3.75, indicating influence of the H+ ion on the extraction. According to the results obtained, the investigated metals form two groups. The first group includes K, Al, Ca, Mg, and Fe. They were extracted in each of the five extractions at each of the pH values. The second group includes Ba, Zn, Mn, Cu, and Sr, which were not all extracted at each pH value. The first group yielded three types of extraction curves when the logarithms of extracted metal amounts were plotted as a function of the number of successive extractions. These effects indicate that three different positions (centres) of metal ion accumulation exist in the lichen (due to sorption, complex formation, or other processes present in the tissues).

AB - Geochemical analyses of Zn, Pb and rare earth elements (La, Ce, Nd, Sm, Eu, Tb, Yb and Lu) in the kerogen of the black marl at the Cretaceous - Paleogene boundary Fish Clay at Hojerup were performed. Substantial proportions of the Zn, Pb and rare earths were probably contained in terrestrial humic substances (the kerogen precursor) arriving at the marine sedimentary site. This is in accord with a previous hypothesis that kerogen is mainly derived from humic acids of an oxic soil in of the adjacent coastal areas of eastern Denmark. It is also suggested that humics enriched in Zn, Pb and rare earth elements were transported mainly through fluvial transport into the deposition site of the Fish Clay. Local weathering/leaching of the impact-eject fallout on the land surface and local terrestrial rocks by impact-induced? acid surface waters perhaps played an important role in providing Zn, Ph and rare earths to these humic substances. Apparently, chondritic and non-chondritic Zn originated from the impact fallout; Pb and rare earth elements were most likely sourced by exposed rocks in the coastal areas of eastern Denmark.

AB - Radial distributions of plasma parameters, temperature, and electron number density, together with radial distribution of analyte absorption and emission, were investigated in order to obtain insight into the radial symmetry of low-current ( LT = 10A), atmospheric pressure, argon stabilized arc with tangential introduction of the aerosol. For plasma diagnostics, several methods were used: measurements of H line profile, absolute intensity measurements of the argon 430.01-nm line, and of the spectrally adjacent continuum and power interruption technique. It was found that the inevitable asymmetry in aerosol introduction has negligible influence on basic plasma parameters but influences considerably the spatial distribution of the analyte particle spectral absorption and emission.

AB - Spatial distribution of delayed responses of argon and hydrogen spectral line and continuum intensity to square power modulation was investigated in order to get better insight into the processes occurring in argon dc arc plasma. The power was abruptly changed between stationary values, 9 and 3.5 A. For these currents steady state radial distributions of electron number density, temperature and emission intensity were measured. On part of the discharge radial profiles the power drop and the power jump are both accompanied by intensity peaks which may be explained by displacement of the arc core axis and change in the arc core diameter during the power modulation.

AB - Monochromatic digital imaging technique was developed for studying the spatial emission intensity distribution of atmospheric pressure dc arc plasma with aerosol supply. Arc plasma was imposed to external oscillating magnetic fields of strengths up to 12 mT and frequency of 50 Hz. This plasma was studied in a laterally resolved manner and at selected observation heights. The intensity enhancement and spatial redistribution of the analyte emission was evaluated and compared to the steady state plasma. The intensity enhancements were correlated with the attained speeds of plasma core movement. Spatial regions in the arc plasma with maximal emission enhancement are identified and clarified. The effect of the electrode polarity was also investigated.

AB - Geochemical analyses of trace metals (Ir, Ni, Co, Cr, Zn, Au and Pb) and rare earth elements (La, Ce, Nd, Sm, Eu, Tb, Yb and Lu) in kerogen of the black marl at the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary Fish Clay at Hojerup have been undertaken. Substantial proportions of the trace metals and rare earths were probably contained in terrestrial humic substances (the kerogen precursor) arriving at the marine sedimentary site. This is in accord with a previous hypothesis that kerogen is mainly derived from humic acids of an oxic soil in of the adjacent coastal areas of eastern Denmark. It is also suggested that humics were transported mainly through fluvial transport into the site of the deposition of the Fish Clay. The local weathering/leaching of the impact-ejecta fallout on the land surface or local terrestrial rocks by impact-induced? acid surface waters perhaps played an important role in providing trace metals and rare earths for these humic substances. Apparently, chondritic Ir, An, Ni, Co, Cr and chondritic and non-chondritic Zn originated from the impact fallout; Pb and rare earth elements were most likely sourced by the rocks exposed in the coastal areas of eastern Denmark.

AB - The Cretaceus-Tertiary (KT) boundary at Stevns Klint (the Hojerup succession), Fiskeler, consists of a thin red clay layer overlain by a thick one of black marl. These two layers are made up mainly from cheto-smectite and biogenic calcite. The black marl shows an enhanced concentration of Ni (655 ppm) within its smectite fraction. Additionally, its carbonate fraction also shows an enhanced concentration of Ni (245 ppm). It is reasoned that these enrichments represent a sudden and rapid input of high amounts of Ni into the late Cretaccus seawater at Stevns Klint. The ultimate source of Ni in both the carbonate and smectite fractions of the black marl was probably impact fallout, produced by the KT asteroidal impact, deposited on the nearby soil and 1 ached by the (acid) surface waters. The geochemistry of the Ni supports the hypothesis that the smectite of this marl most likely has a local (marine or terrestrial) provenance and was probably redeposited, after its formation, from the original site to its present location at the KT boundary.

The data for this kerogen were in accordance with a previous hypothesis(1) that this (insoluble) geoorganic polymer was derived from humic substances (mainly humic acids) of a nearshore soil. AB - A current square modulation technique is used to investigate radial asymmetry of plasma column of argon stabilized direct current U-shaped arc. By monitoring the temporal behavior of spectral line intensities (in a millisecond domain) for various elements, it was observed that nonhomogeneous emission was much more pronounced for current modulated arc plasma compared to the stationary regime plasma. The reason for such behavior, for this as well as for other arc sources, lies in a mode the stream of argon with aerosol is introduced into the arc plasma.
