AB - Magnetic and non-magnetic macroporous crosslinked copolymers of glycidyl methacrylate and trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate were prepared by suspension copolymerization and functionalized with diethylenetriamine. The samples were characterized by mercury porosimetry, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis (FTIR-ATR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and SQUID magnetometry. The FTIR-ATR analysis of synthesized magnetic nanocomposites confirmed the presence of magnetite and successful amino-functionalization. Non-functionalized and amino-functionalized nanocomposites exhibited superparamagnetic behavior at 300 K, with a saturation magnetization of 5.0 emu/g and 2.9 emu/g, respectively. TEM analysis of the magnetic nanocomposite has shown that magnetic nanoparticles were homogeneously dispersed in the polymer matrix. It was demonstrated that incorporation of magnetic nanoparticles enhanced the thermal stability of the magnetic nanocomposite in comparison to the initial non-magnetic macroporous copolymer. © 2019, Association of Chemists and Chemical Engineers of Serbia. AB - The presented study describes macroporous crosslinked poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) [PGME] functionalized with diethylenetriamine [PGME-deta] as a potential recovery agent for Mo(VI) oxyanions from aqueous solutions. Sorption studies were carried out by varying experimental conditions (pH, time, concentration, temperature). Kinetics of Mo(VI) sorption was investigated in batch (static) experiments, in the temperature range 298–343 K. Sorption dynamics data were fitted to seven chemical-reaction and particle-diffusion models. The kinetics studies showed that Mo(VI) sorption adhered to the pseudo-second-order model under all investigated operating conditions. The sorption kinetics was determined to be governed by both the intraparticle diffusion and the external film diffusion to a lesser extent. The temperature rise promotes the molybdate species removal, with the maximum experimental uptake capacity of 4.02 mmol g− 1 at 298 K, at the selected pH which is consistent with the predominance range of hydrolized polynuclear Mo(VI) forms and optimum electrostatic attraction.

AB - Introduction: The outcome of periapical surgery has been directly improved with the introduction of novel material formulations. The aim of the study was to compare the retrograde obturation quality of the following materials: calcium silicate (Biodentine; Septodont, Saint-Maur-des-Fosses, France), mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA+; Cerkamed Company, Stalowa Wola, Poland), and glass ionomer cement (Fuji IX; GC Corporation, Tokyo, Japan). Methods: Materials' wettability was calculated concerning the contact angles of the cements measured using a glycerol drop. Cements' porosity was determined using mercury intrusion porosimetry and micro computed tomographic (mu CT) imaging. Extracted upper human incisors were retrofilled, and mu CT analysis was applied to calculate the volume of the gap between the retrograde filling material and root canal dentin. Experiments were performed before and after soaking the materials in simulated body fluid (SBF). Results: No statistically significant differences were found among the contact angles of the studied materials after being soaked in SBF. The material with the lowest nanoporosity (Fuji IX: 2.99% and 4.17% before and after SBF, respectively) showed the highest values of microporosity (4.2% and 3.1% before and after SBF, respectively). Biodentine had the lowest value of microporosity (1.2% and 0.8% before and after SBF, respectively) and the lowest value of microgap to the root canal wall ({[}10 +/- 30] x 10(-3) mm(3)). Conclusions: Biodentine and MTA possess certain advantages over Fuji IX for hermetic obturation of retrograde root canals. Biodentine shows a tendency toward the lowest marginal gap at the cement-to-dentin interface.

AB - In this study, macroporous poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) was synthesized by suspension copolymerization, functionalized by ring-opening reaction of the pendant epoxy groups with diethylene triamine and used for immobilization of Pd(II) ions from chloride and nitrate solutions under batch experimental condition. The amino-functionalized sample and samples with immobilized Pd(II) ions were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis and scanning energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX). The electrochemical behavior of electrodes composed of synthesized samples was tested in 0.1 M H2SO4 by means of cyclic voltammetry (CV). The shape of recorded CV showed dependence on the type of Pd-salt used for Pd immobilization. The reaction of oxidation of 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) from 0.1 M H2SO4 at investigated samples was also studied. Electrooxidation of 4-CP resulted in passivation and formation of reversible hydroquinone/benzoquinone on both investigated electrodes, although hydroquinone/benzoquinone formation was more pronounced on Pd immobilized from nitrite solution. abstract = "In this study, macroporous poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) was synthesized by suspension copolymerization, functionalized by ring-opening reaction of the pendant epoxy groups with diethylene triamine and used for immobilization of Pd(II) ions from chloride and nitrate solutions under batch experimental condition. AB - A statistical design was used to investigate the effect of various processing conditions on the structure of sol-gel derived Mg(II) doped alumina. Six process variables were selected based on the Plackett-Burman design: concentration of magnesium nitrate, time and temperature of alcohol evaporation, temperature and time of annealing and heating rate were changed at two levels. For every set of conditions, samples with different specific surface area and degree of crystallinity were obtained. Analysis of the results showed that the annealing temperature, heating rate and concentration of magnesium nitrate were the main factors affecting the average crystallite size of the predominant alumina phase. In the case of the specific surface area, two of selected six variables had pronounced effects; however, the temperature of annealing was more effective than others. The present results showed that the proposed model that uses crystallite size as a response variable is preferable to other research.

AB - Novel macroporous functionalized copolymers with different cross-linker concentrations and porosity parameters were synthesized by reaction of the pendant epoxy groups of poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) (poly(GMA-co-EGDMA)) with hexamethylene diamine 1,3-bis(3-aminopropyl)tetramethyldisiloxane, and alpha,omega-diaminopropyl poly(dimethylsiloxane). The copolymers were prepared in forms, of spherical beads and characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR); C-13 and Si-29 solid-state NMR, mercury porosimetry, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Copolymers prepared with the higher cross-linker concentrations have better thermal stability, higher glass transition temperatures; higher specific surface areas, and smaller pore diameters that correspond to half Of the pore volumes. Out results show that functionalization significantly changed porosity parameters, mechanism of thermal degradation; and increased thermal, stability in comparison with the initial copolymers. These macroporous copolymers could potentially have many applications, i.e. for sorption of heavy and precious metals or as Material for gas chromatography columns.

AB - ZnO/ZnWO4 composite rod-like nanoparticles were synthesized by low-temperature soft solution method at 95 A degrees C with different reaction times (1-120 h), in the presence of non-ionic copolymer surfactant Pluronic F68. Obtained nanoparticles had diameters in the range around 10 nm and length of 30 nm. Optical properties such as reflection and room temperature photoluminescence of obtained samples showed strong dependence on their crystallinity and composition. Photocatalytic activity of ZnO/ZnWO4 nanopowders was checked using photodegradation of selected dyes as model system. Obtained results were correlated with specific surface area, particle sizes, crystallinity and ZnO/ZnWO4 ratio of the samples. As crystallinity of ZnWO4 component in the ZnO/ZnWO4 increase, photocatalytic activity also increases. The main findings can be explained by charge transfer reactions that follow light absorption by ZnO and ZnWO4 in nanocomposite.

AB - Electrochemical behavior of 12-tungstophosphoric acid (HPW)/acid-activated bentonite (AAB) powders with various loadings of HPW was investigated. The physicochemical properties of the prepared powders were examined by X-ray powder diffraction, nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, atomic force microscopy and cyclic voltammetry measurements. The results indicated that the prepared powders are composed mainly of oriented domains of large rock blocks, probably resulting from a preferable deposition of bentonite particles having a face-to-face interaction. The particles had a mainly disordered mesoporous structure with a pore volume that varied according to the pore size in the range of 2-50 nm. In addition, the particles had crystallite size between 4.9 and 9.0 nm. The electrocatalytic activities of prepared HPW/AAB electrodes were studied in the oxidation of NO2- and the results revealed that the electrodes possessed relatively higher nitrite oxidation currents than AAB electrode. The best electroactivity was observed for HPW3/AAB electrode (AAB + + 20 wt % HPW) and the limit of detection (3 sigma) was determined as 8 mu M.

AB - Crosslinked macroporous copolymer of glycidyl methacrylate and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (CP) and copolymer composite with acid modified clay (CP-S-A) were prepared by radical suspension copolymerization and functionalized by ring-opening reaction of the pendant epoxy groups with diethylene triamine (CP-deta and CP-S-A-deta). Both S(A)mples were characterized by mercury porosimetry. The influence of pH, sorption time and initial 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) concentration on sorption efficiency of CP-deta and CP-S-A-deta was studied in order to evaluate this material as wastewater sorbent. The isotherm data were best fitted with Langmuir model, while the sorption dynamics obeyed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model.

AB - Two samples of macroporous poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate), poly(GMA-co-EGDMA), were synthesized by suspension copolymerization and modified with amines. Initial poly(GMA-co-EGDMA), and the samples modified with ethylene diamine [poly(GMA-co-EGDMA)-en], diethylene triamine [poly(GMA-co-EGDMA)-deta] and triethylene tetramine [poly(GMA-co-EGDMA)-teta], were characterized by mercury porosimetry, FTIR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. The most pronounced increase of specific surface area (75%) was observed for poly(GMA-co-EGDMA)-teta sample with smaller particles (D LT 150 mu m). The Cu(II) sorption was rapid, depending on porosity of amino-functionalized samples and ligand type. For poly(GMA-co-EGDMA)-deta and poly(GMA-co-EGDMA)-teta sorption half time required to reach 50% of total sorption capacity, t(1/2), were around 3 min. Sorption capacities for Cu(II), Co(II), Cd(II) and Ni(II) as well as for Cr(VI), Co(II), Cd(II) and Ni(II) ions were determined under competitive conditions as a function of pH, ligand type and porosity at room temperature. The results indicate selectivity of poly(GMA-co-EGDMA)-deta for Cu(II) over Cd(II) of 3:1 and for Cu(II) over Ni(II) and Co(II) of 6:1. The decrease in particle size of poly(GMA-co-EGDMA)-teta caused the increase of sorption capacities for all metal ions. At pH 1.8 the selectivity of poly(GMA-co-EGDMA)-teta with smaller particles for Cr(VI) over Ni(II), Co(II) and Cd(II) ions was 8.5:1.

AB - Inverse gas chromatography under finite surface coverage conditions (IGC-FC) was used for the investigation of sorption of hexane, benzene, chloroform and tetrahydrofuran on macroporous crosslinked poly[(glycidyl methacrylate)-co-(ethylene glycol dimethacrylate)], poly(GMA-co-EGDMA), and copolymer modified with ethylene diamine, EDA, poly(GMA-co-EGDMA)-en, in the temperature range 333-363 K. Two poly(GMA-co-EGDMA) samples with different porosity parameters were synthesized by suspension copolymerization and modified using a ring-opening reaction of the pendant epoxy groups with EDA. The specific surface areas of the initial and modified copolymer samples were determined by the BET method from low temperature nitro- gen adsorption isotherms (77 K). The adsorption isotherms determined from chromatographic peaks of adsorbates were analyzed using the BET theoretical model and used for estimation of the surface area, isosteric heat of adsorption and the adsorption energy distribution on the surface of the initial and modified copolymer samples. It was observed that the adsorbate nature and the properties of the solid surface of the initial and modified copolymer governed the uptake of adsorbate by the copolymer. The deviations observed for the Sa values obtained by the BET method from the low temperature nitrogen adsorption isotherms and hexane was attributed not only to the difference in molecule size, but also to the specific polymer-adsorbate interactions. The isosteric heat of adsorption approached a constant value with increasing adsorbate loading. A large variation in the shapes of the q(st)-alpha curves resulted from strong acid-base interactions, as well as dissolution phenomena. Of the four studied adsorbates, chloroform was shown to have the greatest affinity towards the surface of the investigated polymer samples.
