AB - Building integrated photovoltaics modules provide a high degree of design possibilities and additional functionalities in combination with the plain electricity generation well known for standard photovoltaic installations. Consequently, the specialized know-how to understand building integrated photovoltaics, properly design and manufacture them requires much more than the electrical knowledge developed and applied in standard photovoltaic systems. Expertise of building physics and building regulations are also required on a high level. As building integrated photovoltaics modules are usually custom designed, typical electrical design and simulationols cannot be used without modifications, while deeper insight of complex shading influences and specialized overall system design are advantageous. Authors of this publication were involved in well over 1000 building integrated photovoltaics system designs and developments, and their experiences are shared. Recurring questions, issues and mistakes of various building integrated photovoltaics projects are touched, whereas special emphasis is provided on building integrated photovoltaics engineering procedures, system design complexity, as well as shading issues and differentiation of shading according to their origin.

AB - In the name of a better and safer energy future, it is our responsibility to focus our knowledge and activities to save on imported liquid and gas fossil fuels, as well as coal on which energy security of Serbia is based. The rationalization in the use of available energy resources certainly positively affects economy and the environment of a country. This paper indicates motivations for the application of the underground coal gasification process, as well as surface gasification for Serbia. The goal is to burn less coal, while simultaneously utilizing more gas from the onsite underground coal gasification, or by gasification in various types of gas generators mounted on the surface. In both cases, from the obtained gas, CO2, NOx, and other harmful gases are extracted in scrubbers. This means that further gas combustion byproducts do not pollute the atmosphere in comparison with traditional coal combustion. In addition, complete underground coal gasification power requirements could be offset by the onsite solar photovoltaic power plant, which furthermore enhances environmental concerns of the overall coal utilization.

AB - MEMS sensors are widely used type of sensors that can be found in many modern gadgets. Affordable price and small dimensions in combination with high sensitivity and precision made them interesting candidates for the wide range applications in various fields. In case of seismology, application of MEMS accelerometer is still in the shadow of the classical accelerometers with the inertial element, although the characteristics of the today MEMS accelerometers can easily match the classical ones. In this paper group of authors decided to test characteristics of the high sensitivity accelerometer and to determine if it is suitable for the applications in seismology. The requirements that sensor had to meet are high sensitivity and noise level below the threshold of human detectable vibrations which is around four degrees of the Mercalli scale or the ground acceleration between 0.015g and 0.04g.

AB - Construction and characterization of a simple but flexible, low cost diode laser system for the excitation of carbon quantum dots as a treatment method for ocular cancers is reported. System was designed to deliver maximal amount of laser diode radiant flux to the eye of the test mice using optical cable. Detailed electronic circuit layouts of the laser diode voltage controller, supplying maximum 3 V of voltage with 20 mV resolutions, and functional description of all other components (optical cable delivery system and supporting console) are given. The system features visual signalization when the laser diode module is powered. Since the laser diode radiant flux is directly dependent on the input voltage, measurement was performed in order to obtain approximation function of this dependency. Purpose of this function is to eliminate radiant flux measurement before each experiment which requires controlled conditions.

AB - A zinc-exchanged montmorillonite (Zn-MONT) was prepared from a natural montmorillonite (MONT) and the adsorption of aflatoxin B-1 (AFB(1)) was investigated at pH 3 and 7. Characterization of Zn-MONT was done by determination of chemical composition, the point of the zero charge (pH(pzc)), thermal (DTA/TGA/DTG) and X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) analysis. Adsorption of AFB(1) (C-0 = 4 ppm) by Zn-MONT, at different solid/liquid ratios (10, 1 and 0.5 g L-1), at pH 3 or 7, showed that its adsorption was high (over 96%) and independent of pH, similar to MONT. No desorption of AFB(1) from MONT-AFB(1) and Zn-MONT-AFB(1) complexes occurred at pH 6.5, suggesting strong binding of AFB(1) by both adsorbents. Furthermore, AFB(1) adsorption by Zn-MONT followed a nonlinear (Langmuir) type of isotherm at pH 3 with a calculated maximum capacity of 60.17 mg g(-1). The stability of MONT-AFB(1) and Zn-MONT-AFB(1) complexes was evaluated by calculating the binding energies between AFB(1) and metal cations using quantum chemical methods. The evaluated interaction energies of AFB(1) with hydrated Zn2+, Mg2+, and Ca2+ cations showed that the strongest interaction was the interaction of the Zn2+ system, -70.2 kcal mol(-1), whereas energies for Mg-2 and Ca2+ systems were -68.8 and -62.9 kcal mol(-1), respectively. The results indicate that Zn-MONT can be suitable for potential practical application as both, an antibacterial and an aflatoxin binding agent. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - A practical multipurpose implementation of hybrid renewable energy system completely located within the building and including building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) solar power energy source is presented. The system uses solar photovoltaic electricity generated by the building skin to produce hydrogen for fuel-cells, which in turn, when converted to energy in fuel cells, may be used to supply additional power to the building (or fuel cell vehicles) when solar power is not sufficient, for example at night or in periods of low insolation. Electricity generated from 8.2 kW(p) BIPV array optimally supplies the electrolyser near the maximum power point level of the BIPV array. To further optimize hydrogen production, the electrolyser is connected to the local electrical utility, and DC power is provided to the electrolyser through a custom on-board DC power supply that supplements the BIPV array. Performance of the complete installation is optimized to provide continual production at the optimal efficiency level of hydrogen production at constant power. The results obtained from the system operation have shown excellent voltage and current regulation during operation of the electrolyser. The project shows the potential for development of similar building integrated hybrid systems elsewhere with possibilities for inclusion of additional renewable energy sources and added functionality. AB - This paper presents results of our investigation of radiation resistance of different types of commercially available single and poly crystalline silicon solar cells. Sample cells were subjected to gamma radiation from gamma radiation source (Co60). Characteristic parameters of solar cells were extracted from obtained I-V curves: open circuit voltage, short circuit current, maximum power point voltage and current, efficiency, fill factor and series resistance. Obtained results could lead to novel designs of silicon solar cells with purpose of increasing their possible applications in radiation environments.

AB - The interest in real world systems such as particular types of social (the network of acquaintances between individuals, collaboration of scientists, collaboration between actors in who acted in same movies, ...), biological (the network of metabolic pathways, genetic regulatory network, food web, protein interaction network, ...), technological (Internet, Power Grid, the telephone network, ...), informational (the network of citations between academic papers, World Wide Web, ...), etc. systems was in recent years remarkable [1], [2]. The above mentioned systems are characterized by two sets - a set of items and a set of connections or relationships between them. This kind of system we call network. The overall connectivity of the whole system is not simple, regardless of pairwise connections of items, and far from regularity. Hence, we call these physical systems complex networks, and they induced the development of complex networks theory. In the essence of this theory was the attempt to make classification of such systems with respect to the underlying structure, as well as to understand organizational principles which lead to formation of characteristic structures. Different kinds of dynamical processes on real world systems (such as deletion/addition of elements, and/or connections; information flow, etc.) takes place, and properties of these dynamical processes are influenced by the underlying structure. Hence, the notion of structure is certainly one of central concepts of complex networks theory. The most usual property for characterizing a structure is the distribution of number of connections which items have. Since the beginning of its development, the complex networks theory relied on the concepts of graph theory. This reliance is understandable since the treatment of real world networks as sets of entities and their pairwise connections was natural and easiest to represent mathematically as a graph. On the other hand, the branch of mathematics called combinatorial algebraic topology [3], [4] introduced us the concepts of simplices and simplicial complexes, as objects which have local connectivity properties not so simple as those in graph theory. Let us in short make some parallels between graphs and simplicial complexes. While the main entity in graph is a node, in simplicial complex main entity is simplex, which is defined as a set of vertices. A pair of nodes in graph are connected by link, while in simplicial complex two simplices are connected if sets which define them have some vertices in common (these shared common vertices we call face). From this short comparison we can anticipate that simplices form connectivity structure which is more complex than graph. Furthermore, connectivity, as well as structural properties, can be considered from three aspects: combinatorial, algebraic, and topological. Hence, at this point we came to the main idea of this paper, which is the following: can we represent physical complex network as simplicial complex, and if we can, what are the statistical mechanics properties of measures which emerge from combinatorial, algebraic, and topological aspect, analogously to the statistical mechanics approach to graph representation of complex network? Furthermore, if we can do all this, another problem arises: can we make some relationship between properties of complex networks which emerges from two representation - graph and simplicial complex representation?
