AB - Cavitation erosion of hybrid acrylate composite films with polyhedraloligosilsesquioxanes (POSS) was investigated in this study. The hybrid films aremade with 1, 3 and 5 wt% of POSS reagents containing: (a) hydroxyl (POSS-M),(b) both hydroxyl and allyl (POSS-M-A) and (c) methacryloyl groups (POSS-MCl).Addition of 5 wt% POSS-M-A caused the highest microhardness increase for49.8%, in comparison to the pure matrix material. Cavitation resistance of hybridfilms, estimated as the time-dependent mass loss, was improved by POSS addition.POSS-M-A addition (5 wt%) contributed to 94% lower mass loss comparingto pure Bis-GMA/TEGDMA film. Scanning electron (SEM) and atomic forcemicroscopy (AFM) showed the lowest surface roughness obtained for compositewith POSS-M-A. The improved hardness and wear resistance of the compositefilms indicated that POSS-M-A filler enhanced interfacial adhesion and reinforcingof the Bis-GMA/TEGDMA matrix.

AB - The aim of the study was to investigate the influence of low heating temperatures with two different retention times to optimize the process for obtaining nanosized hydroxyapatite material that can possibly be used in the fields of biology and pharmacy. Nanosized hydroxyapatite was successfully obtained by wet chemical precipitation. The annealing of the material performed at 300 oC with two different retention times i.e. 3 and 6 hours in air atmosphere. Low annealing temperature with extended retention time was selected in terms to reduce energy consumption. FTIR spectroscopy was used to confirm characteristic vibrational bands of hydroxyapatite samples, and presence of carbonate bands of hydroxyapatite annealed for 3h and 6h. X-Ray powder diffraction analysis were used to examine phase composition, determine the size of unit cells and crystallite sizes, and SEMEDS methods were used to obtain particle size and arrangement also grain growth morphology and confirmed the presence of calcium, phosphorous oxygen and carbonate peaks. The results show that different retention time has influence on particle growth as well as unit cell parameters and crystallite sizes changes of hydroxyapatite material.

AB - Due to their low cost and possible green synthesis, high stability and resistance to photobleaching, graphene quantum dots (GQDs) can be considered as one of the class of carbon nanomaterials which may have great potential as an agent for photosensitized oxygen activation. In such a way, GQDs can be used as a theranostic agent in photodynamic therapy. In this work pristine GQDs, GQDs irradiated with gamma rays and GQDs doped with N and N, S atoms are produced using a simple, green approach. By using different techniques (AFM, HR-TEM, SEM-EDS, FTIR, XRD, PL and UV–Vis) we investigated structural and optical properties of the new types of GQDs. We showed that GQDs functionalized with thiourea (GQDs-TU) completely lost the ability to produce singlet oxygen (1O2) upon photoexcitation while functionalization with urea (GQDs-U) improves the capability of GQDs to produce 1O2 upon the same conditions. Thus, presented GQDs modification with urea seems like a promising approach for the production of the efficient photosensitizer. On the opposite, GQDs-TU are efficient [rad]OH quencher. Due to high singlet oxygen production and low cytotoxicity below 100 μg/mL against HeLa cells, GQDs-U is a good candidate as an agent in photodynamic therapy at this concentration. © 2019

Proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H NMR) indicated the successful synthesis of the proposed POSS structures. The hydroxyl groups affected the manner and type of POSS morphology, as seen under a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and a transmission electron microscope (TEM). Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) showed the availability of surface hydroxyl groups that contributed to the formation of a higher amount of char residue, as found from TGA analysis. The highest decomposition temperature (281 °C) and the least char residue were found for a cross-linkable POSS, obtained by esterification of the hydroxyl groups with methacryloyl chloride. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd

AB - New agar-based composite films with increasing Cu-carbonate and Cu-phosphate mineral phase content were prepared by in situ mineralization and solvent casting method. SEM and optical analysis revealed that Cu-carbonate phase had better compatibility with agar matrix than Cu-phosphate phase. Incorporation of both mineral phases improved mechanical and water vapor barrier properties of the obtained mineralized films, in concentration dependent manner. When 5 mM of carbonate precursor was incorporated into agar matrix, mechanical resistance was enchanced for 44% and water vapor barrier property for 40%. The release of Cu (II) was higher in acidic conditions for both mineralized composites and remained in the range of specific release limits for this metal. In addition, both mineralized composite films exhibited distinctive antimicrobial activity against Gram-negative (Escherichia coli) and Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) bacteria. Overall, the Cu-carbonate and Cu-phosphate mineralized agar films showed potential to be used for food packaging materials, agriculture or medical purposes. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd

AB - Titanium dioxide is a photocatalyst, known not only for its ability to oxidize organic contaminants, but also for its antimicrobial properties. In this article, significant enhancement of the antimicrobial activity of TiO2 (up to 32 times) was demonstrated after its activation by ball milling. The antimicrobial activity was analyzed for one fungal and 13 bacterial ATCC strains using the microdilution method and recording the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values. In order to further investigate the correlation between the mechanical activation of TiO2 and its antimicrobial activity, the structure, morphology and phase composition of the material were studied by means of Electron Microscopy, X-ray diffraction and nitrogen adsorption-desorption measurements. UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectra were recorded and the Kubelka-Munk function was applied to convert reflectance into the equivalent band gap energy (Eg) and, consequently, to investigate changes in the Eg value. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to analyze the influence of mechanical activation on the Ti 2p and O 1s spectra. The presented results are expected to enable the development of more sustainable and effective advanced TiO2-based materials with antimicrobial properties that could be used in numerous green technology applications.

AB - Hydrothermal synthesis of Mn2+ doped titanate nanotubes (TNTs), which exhibited room temperature ferromagnetism (RTFM), is reported. Dispersions of 1 and 5 at.% Mn2+ doped anatase TiO2 nanocrystals were used as precursors. Size and shape of Mn2+ doped TNTs and precursor nanocrystals were studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The relatively uniform size distribution of transverse dimension of nanotubes of about 10 nm was observed while their lengths varied up to few hundred nanometers. The X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis and Raman spectroscopy of resultant powder confirmed the hydrogen dititanate (H2Ti2O5 x H2O) crystal phase of Mn2+ doped TNTs with the presence of small amount of sodium titanates. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) experiments were performed to probe the local atomic and electronic structure of Mn in the nanotubes. Room temperature ferromagnetic ordering with saturation magnetic moment (Ms) in the range of 0.6–1.5 μB per Mn atom was observed. © 2019 Elsevier Masson SAS

AB - Magnetic and non-magnetic macroporous crosslinked copolymers of glycidyl methacrylate and trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate were prepared by suspension copolymerization and functionalized with diethylenetriamine. The samples were characterized by mercury porosimetry, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis (FTIR-ATR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and SQUID magnetometry. The FTIR-ATR analysis of synthesized magnetic nanocomposites confirmed the presence of magnetite and successful amino-functionalization. Non-functionalized and amino-functionalized nanocomposites exhibited superparamagnetic behavior at 300 K, with a saturation magnetization of 5.0 emu/g and 2.9 emu/g, respectively. TEM analysis of the magnetic nanocomposite has shown that magnetic nanoparticles were homogeneously dispersed in the polymer matrix. It was demonstrated that incorporation of magnetic nanoparticles enhanced the thermal stability of the magnetic nanocomposite in comparison to the initial non-magnetic macroporous copolymer. © 2019, Association of Chemists and Chemical Engineers of Serbia. AB - Multiferroic materials attracted a lot of attention in recent years because of their significant scientific interest and technological applications. The multiferroic core/shell powders have a better connectivity between the phases, resulting in superior dielectric and magneto electric properties. In this study, the influence of preparation condition on structure and properties of BaTiO3/α-Fe2O3 core/shell composite materials was examined. The five samples were obtained by varying synthesis conditions, such as synthesized method (co-precipitation and sonochemical method) and pH values of solution. XRD and Raman spectroscopy analyses were performed in order to determine phase composition and structural changes within samples. Morphology modifications were examined by SEM and EDS analyses. Finally, effect of structural and microstructural changes on magnetic and electrical properties was detected and explained.

AB - Iron oxide, in the form of magnetite (MG)–functionalized porous wollastonite (WL), was used as an adsorbent for heavy metal ions (cadmium and nickel) and oxyanions (chromate and phosphate) removal from water. The porous WL was synthesized from calcium carbonate and siloxane by controlled sintering process using low molecular weight submicrosized poly(methyl methacrylate) as a pore-forming agent. The precipitation of MG nanoparticles was carried out directly by a polyol-medium solvothermal method or via branched amino/carboxylic acid cross-linker by solvent/nonsolvent method producing WL/MG and WL-?-APS/MG adsorbents, respectively. The structure/properties of MG functionalized WL was confirmed by applying FTIR, Raman, XRD, Mössbauer, and SEM analysis. Higher adsorption capacities of 73.126, 66.144, 64.168, and 63.456 mg g -1 for WL-?-APS/MG in relation to WL/MG of 55.450, 52.019, 48.132, and 47.382 mg g -1 for Cd 2+ , Ni 2+ , phosphate, and chromate, respectively, were obtained using nonlinear Langmuir model fitting. Adsorption phenomena were analyzed using monolayer statistical physics model for single adsorption with one energy. Kinetic study showed exceptionally higher pseudo-second-order rate constants for WL-?-APS/MG, e.g., 1.17–13.4 times, with respect to WL/MG indicating importance of both WL surface modification and controllable precipitation of MG on WL-?-APS. © 2019, Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature.

The precipitation of MG nanoparticles was carried out directly by a polyol-medium solvothermal method or via branched amino/carboxylic acid cross-linker by solvent/nonsolvent method producing WL/MG and WL-γ-APS/MG adsorbents, respectively. The structure/properties of MG functionalized WL was confirmed by applying FTIR, Raman, XRD, Mössbauer, and SEM analysis. Higher adsorption capacities of 73.126, 66.144, 64.168, and 63.456 mg g−1 for WL-γ-APS/MG in relation to WL/MG of 55.450, 52.019, 48.132, and 47.382 mg g−1 for Cd2+, Ni2+, phosphate, and chromate, respectively, were obtained using nonlinear Langmuir model fitting. Adsorption phenomena were analyzed using monolayer statistical physics model for single adsorption with one energy. Kinetic study showed exceptionally higher pseudo-second-order rate constants for WL-γ-APS/MG, e.g., 1.17–13.4 times, with respect to WL/MG indicating importance of both WL surface modification and controllable precipitation of MG on WL-γ-APS.

AB - Alumina-based compounds have many technological applications and attract great attention even after decades of investigation, due to their good chemical, electrical, and mechanical properties. A mixture of several alumina modifications (α-, κ-, γ-Al2O3) doped with 1 wt% of Mn2O3 was used for this experiment. The powder was mechanically activated for 60 min in an ethanol medium. After compaction, green bodies were sintered in the temperature range from 1200 to 1400 °C. Microstructures of the obtained specimens were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The influence of morphological changes on electrical and mechanical properties was examined in detail. We have developed a test fixture and corresponding software for measurement of the relative dielectric permittivity and the loss tangent of ceramic specimens. This new method overcomes the problems of dimensions and shape of samples, as well as the problem of applying silver paste. The accuracy is around 2% for ε'r and 0.003 for tanδ. We demonstrate that the mechanical activation (MA) has the dominant influence on lowering the characteristic temperatures and microstructure development, which further leads to increased permittivity and tensile strength.

AB - Geopolymers (GP) were successfully synthesized from metabentonite (MB), metadiatomite (MD) and metakaolinite (MK). Characterization of their phase structure and microstructure was performed by XRD, FTIR, SEM/EDX methods. A SEM micrograph of GPMD shows a homogeneous surface with some longitudinal cavities in the gel, and it is significantly different from the micrographs of the other two geopolymer samples, GPMB and GPMK. A considerable amount of unreacted particles, as well as the presence of pores in the geopolymer matrix of GPMK and GPMD, indicate an incomplete reaction in the system. Aluminosilicate inorganic polymers, geopolymers, are quasi solid electrolytes which possess a high electrical conductivity at room temperature in relation to materials of similar chemical composition. The highest conductivity was found for the sample obtained from GPMK, amounting to 2.14 × 10–2 Ω–1cm–1at 700 ºC. The corresponding activation energies of conductivity for this sample amounted to 0.33 eV in the temperature range of 500–700 ºC. The geopolymer synthesized from metakaolin has good ionic conductivity values, which recommends it for use as an alternative material for an SOFC (Solid Oxide Fuel Cell).

AB - The paper presents results of the influence of mechanical activation of shungite, a carbon-mineral rock material rich in silica and carbon, on its sintering behaviour, and obtaining of pure SiC ceramics. The mechanical activation of the starting powder was performed in a high-energy ball mill in time intervals from 30 to 480 min. The phase composition of the starting powders and sintered samples was analysed by the X-ray diffraction method. The first traces of SiC were detected after sintering at 1350 °C for 2 h in an Ar atmosphere, along with traces of unreacted SiO2. The scanning electron microscopy was performed in order to determine changes in the microstructure. Sintering was performed at various temperatures for 2 h, in an Ar atmosphere and a vacuum. Dielectric properties of the sintered samples were measured in the frequency range from 1 to 500 MHz. The obtained results indicate that the sintered powder is a good candidate for applications as an absorber of electromagnetic waves in microwave engineering. © 2019 University of Novi Sad, Faculty of Technology. AB - Photoactive materials called photosensitizers can be used for treatment of different types of cancer in combination with light source. In this paper, we have investigated pro-oxidant and antioxidant potentials of four graphene based nanomaterials (graphene oxide-GO, graphene quantum dots-GQDs, carbon quantum dots-CQDs and N-doped carbon quantum dots-N-CQDs) depending on the presence/absence of visible light source. Structural and optical properties of these materials and their potentials for reactive oxygen species generation/quenching are investigated by applying different microscopy and spectroscopy techniques (transmission electron microscopy, FTIR, UV–Vis, photoluminescence, electron paramagnetic resonance). Results show that all types of quantum dots has pro-oxidant and antioxidant potentials whereas GO demonstrated only moderate antioxidant effect. The best free radical scavenger is CQDs sample in the absence of light. CQDs are the best singlet oxygen generator under blue light irradiation as well. To check photo-cytotoxicity of these materials, photo-cytotoxic concentrations of the GO, GQDs, CQDs and N-CQDs were determined for three cellular lines: human rhabdomyosarcoma (RD), cell line derived from human cervix carcinoma Hep2c (HeLa) and fibroblast cell line from murine (L2OB). Cytotoxicity test has indicated that all samples are much less photocytotoxic than cis-diamminedichloroplatinum (cis-DPP). The production method and doping of quantum dots affect the photodynamic activity of tested samples very much.

AB - In the present study the commercial multifunctional fatty acid polyamidoamine (PAA) was for the first time simultaneously applied as a curing agent and clay modifier for epoxy/clay nanocomposites (NC) based on diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A. The montmorillonite (Cloisite®Na + ) was modified with different quantities of partially and fully protonated polyamidoamine. The NCs with 0.5 wt% novel organoclay were prepared by solution intercalation method. The major aims of this paper are investigations of the effects of the composition of PAA modified clays on structure, mechanical, barrier properties and corrosion stability on steel substrates of NCs were studied. The thermogravimetric, flame photometry and X-ray diffraction analyses confirmed the efficient modification of clay surface with polyamidoamine, predominantly located within layers. The NCs exhibited an intercalated/exfoliated morphology and the presence of free amino groups and increased content of modifier facilitated dispersion of clay particles within the polymer matrix, as shown by electron microscopy techniques (SEM, TEM). Under an optimized loading of PAA (molar quantity of total amino groups per clay cation exchange capacity of 1.75), the layers in stacks were separated by 5.0 nm and high number of individual layers was present in NC. Clay modified by PAA with free amino groups showed increased storage modulus in the rubbery state, glass transition temperature of NCs, while dumping factor was decreased. The tensile test confirmed that introduction of flexible modifier on the epoxy/clay interface lead to increase in the ultimate tensile strenght and elongation at break by 31% and toughness up to 83%. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and permeability tests proved the pronounced barrier effect of clay particles against corrosive species and water vapor when high dispersion degree of clay in NC was achieved. © 2019 Elsevier B.V.

AB - Geopolymers are an emerging class of materials that offer an alternative to the Portland cement as the binder of structural concrete. One of the advantages is that the primary source of their production is waste alumosilicate materials from different industries. One of the key issues in geopolymer synthesis is the low level of mechanical properties due to porosity as well as the high activity of conductivity carriers. It can often lead to limited application possibilities, so the objective is to obtain an enhanced strength as well as decreased cracking tendency through microstructure modification. The introduction of Ca(OH)2, under certain pH conditions could lead to the filling-the-pores process and improving the mechanical properties. The aim was to understand the role that calcium plays in the geopolymer synthesis, and to define which reaction prevails under the synthesis conditions: formation of geopolymer gel or calcium silicate hydrate that contains aluminum substitution (CASH). The synthesis was performed with different raw materials (with or without red mud) and different alkalinity conditions. Ca(OH)2 was the obligatory supplement to both of the mixtures. Different techniques were performed for the testing of reaction products, as well as to define the microstructural changes as the generator of improved mechanical properties and changed electrical conductivity. The characteristics of the geopolymer's macrostructure were defined by means of an SEM analysis. Compressive strength and electrical conductivity are among the investigated product's properties. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy (FTIR) were used for the identification of various crystalline phases and an amorphous phase. ©, Institute of Metals and Technology, Ljubljana, Slovenia.

AB - Nickel-modified titanate/TiO2 catalysts were prepared by deposition of nickel ions onto hydrothermally prepared titanate supports, followed by hydrogen temperature-programmed reduction. Two different nickel precursors (hydroxide and carbonate) were used to tune reducibility and to vary the crystal phase structure of the final catalysts. The precursor reducibility and functional properties of the final catalysts were investigated systematically using various characterisation techniques. The results revealed a more facile reduction of the hydroxide precursor compared to its carbonate counterpart. Moreover, it was found that the formation of the anatase phase was favoured by the use of the hydroxide precipitation agent. The photocatalytic activity towards hydrogen production of the prepared catalysts was evaluated in the presence of 2-propanol under simulated solar light irradiation. A thorough study of the photocatalytic performance of the synthesised catalysts was conducted as a function of the precipitation agent used and the reduction temperature applied. The catalyst with dominant anatase crystal phase displayed the highest photocatalytic activity with a maximum H2 production rate of 1040 μmol h−1 g−1, this being more than four times higher than that of its carbonate counterpart. The catalysts with titanate structure showed similar activity, independent of the precipitation method used. The nanotubular structure was found to be the dominant factor in the stability of photocatalysts under long-run working conditions. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l.

AB - The purpose of this investigation is to investigate the hydrophobicity of geopolymers, new alumino-silicate materials and the influence of Si/Al ratio on their surface properties. Contact angle measurement (CAM) as reliable indicator of hydrophobicity was determined for synthesized geopolymers using water and ethylene-glycol as reference liquids. Geopolymers were synthesized from various precursors: Kaolin, bentonite and diatomite. Characterization of phase structure and microstructure was performed by XRD, FTIR, SEM/EDX methods. Contact angle measurements confirmed that the geopolymers synthesized from metakaolin are the most porous, which can be explained by the smallest Si/Al ratio. The maximum value of contact angle and free surface energy (110.2 mJ/m2) has been achieved for geopolymer synthesized by diatoms (GPMD). SEM micrograph of GPMD shows a homogeneous surface with some longitudinal cavities in the gel and is significantly different from the micrographs of other two geopolymer samples, GPMB and GPMK. © 2018 Authors.

AB - In our recent studies we have designed fullerenol/doxorubicin nanocomposite (FNP/DOX) as the new drug nanocarrier. This research has demonstrated that this novel nanocomposite has had better implications on the liver tissue in vivo (Wistar rats treated intraperitoneally), than treatment based only on DOX. FNP/DOX has been characterised by DLS, TEM and AFM measurements which have shown that DOX loaded onto FNP did not influence fullerenol nanoparticle's size. FNP/DOX affected oxidative status in blood causing a significant decrease of catalase and SOD activity in comparison to DOX, implicating the reduction in oxidative stress. qRT-PCR results on the mRNA level of antioxidative enzymes (catalase and MnSOD) revealed that the effect of oxidative stress is significantly reduced by the treatment with FNP/DOX (p <.05). The ultrastructural analysis of the liver tissue has revealed that FNP/DOX nanocomposite generated considerably less damage in the liver tissue, than DOX applied at the same dose. Hence, our results have indicated that FNP, within FNP/DOX nanocomposite, exhibits protective effects to the liver tissue of the healthy rats.

AB - The major aims of this paper are the investigation of the effects of the mixing procedure and the montmorillonite (Mt) surface modification on the structure (optical microscopy, XRD, TEM, SEM), rheological, mechanical properties (DMA, tensile test) and corrosion stability (electrochemical impedance spectroscopy) of clay mineral/epoxy nanocomposite (CPN). Two series of CPN samples were prepared based on diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) and polyamidoamine curing agent with three organophilic Mt and sodium-montmorillonite (1 wt%). Mt were mixed with DGEBA solution in the powder (direct mixing) and in the form of dispersions, preswollen in a commercial coating thinner (solution intercalation). The commercial Mt (Cloisite 30B) modified by quaternary alkylammonium ions bearing hydroxyl groups and especially Mt functionalized by primary (HDA(+)-Mt) alkylammonium ions, at loadings close to cation exchange capacity (CRC), were significantly swollen by thinner and further uniformly dispersed into CPN. Meanwhile, low gel volumes in thinner were found for more hydrophobic Mt (Cloisite 15A). The compatibility of Mt with solvents was well described by solubility and Flory-Huggins interaction parameters. In contrast to the direct incorporation of Mt powders in CPN, swelling enhanced intercalation of epoxy matrix into Mt, and for HDA(+)-Mt based CPN interlayer spacing reached 4.4 nm. The usage of HDA(+)-Mt organoclay and solution intercalation procedure provided the highest enhancement in rheological parameters (G, G, of Mt/epoxy dispersions and glassy storage modulus, Youngs modulus and barrier properties of cured CPN.

AB - © 2018 Antibacterial properties of graphene oxide (GO) have been studied extensively in the last few years, while for polyoxometalates there are just a few researches. Herein, we prepared nanocomposites of GO and different amounts of 12-molybdophosphoric acid (MoPA) and analyzed their antibacterial activity and both structural and morphological properties. In nanocomposites with higher amounts of MoPA, graphene sheets were significantly changed with disrupted flat, graphene-like morphology of GO. In the nanocomposites with low MoPA content, flat GO morphology was preserved. Additionally, structural analyses showed some changes in symmetry of the Keggin anion as a consequence of interactions between GO and MoPA, the increase in structural disorder and the lowering of electron density in GO structure due to interaction with MoPA. We have studied antibacterial properties on the gram-positive: Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Bacillus subtilis; and the gram-negative bacteria: Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Salmonella abony. Only a mild antibacterial effect of GO and nanocomposites with low amount of MoPA against Bacillus subtilis was observed, while the rest of analyzed materials did not show any antibacterial activity.

AB - The interaction of partially reduced graphene oxide (prGO) and Huh7.5.1 liver cancer cells was investigated by means of DUV fluorescence bioimaging. The prGO sample was obtained by the reduction (to a certain extent) of the initially prepared graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets with hydrazine. The fluorescence of the GO nanosheets increases with time of the reduction due to a change in ratio of the sp2 and sp3 carbon sites and the prGO sample was extracted from the dispersion after 6 min, when the intensity of the fluorescence reached its maximum. The reduction process was left to proceed further to saturation until highly reduced graphene oxide (denoted here as rGO) was obtained. GO, prGO and rGO samples were investigated by structural (scanning electron microscopy (SEM), scanning transmission electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive spectrometry (STEM-EDS)) and spectroscopic (UV-vis, photoluminescence (PL), Raman) methods. After that, Huh7.5.1 cells were incubated with GO, prGO and rGO nanosheets and used in bioimaging studies, which were performed on DISCO beamline of synchrotron SOLEIL. It was found that the prGO significantly enhanced the fluorescence of the cells and increased the intensity of the signal by ~2.5 times. Time-lapse fluorescence microscopy experiments showed that fluorescence dynamics strongly depends on the type of nanosheets used. The obtained prGO nanostructure can be easily conjugated with aromatic ring containing drugs, which opens a possibility for its applications in fluorescence microscopy monitored drug delivery. © 2018 IOP Publishing Ltd.
