AB  - This work presents the characterization of novel synthesized WO3/Fe3O4 catalysts and investigates their photocatalytic activity for thiacloprid decomposition under UV and simulated sunlight radiation. Four WO3/Fe3O4 nanopowders with different amounts of WO3 were synthesized by chemical co-precipitation method. XRD analysis showed the presence of hematite and magnetite nano-dimensional phases of Fe3O4 in the catalysts. The magnetite phase content increased with increasing WO3 content. Degradation efficiency of thiacloprid in the presence of 6.1WO3/Fe3O4/H2O2 under simulated solar radiation was 2.2 times higher compared to Fe3O4. Under an external magnetic field, a significant increase in the catalysts separation from reaction mixture was observed. © 2018 The Korean Society of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry

AB  - A comprehensive study of the removal of selected biologically active compounds (pharmaceuticals and pesticides) from different water types was conducted using bare TiO2nanoparticles and TiO2/polyaniline (TP-50, TP-100, and TP-150) nanocomposite powders. In order to investigate how molecular structure of the substrate influences the rate of its removal, we compared degradation efficiency of the initial substrates and degree of mineralization for the active components of pharmaceuticals (propranolol, and amitriptyline) and pesticides (sulcotrione, and clomazone) in double distilled (DDW) and environmental waters. The results indicate that the efficiency of photocatalytic degradation of propranolol and amitriptyline was higher in environmental waters: rivers (Danube, Tisa, and Begej) and lakes (Moharač, and Sot) in comparison with DDW. On the contrary, degradation efficacy of sulcotrione and clomazone was lower in environmental waters. Further, of the all catalysts applied, bare TiO2and TP-100 were found to be most effective in the mineralization of propranolol and amitriptyline, respectively, while TP-150 appeared to be the most efficient in terms of sulcotrione and clomazone mineralization. Also, there was no significant toxicity observed after the irradiation of pharmaceuticals or pesticides solutions using appropriate catalysts on rat hepatoma (H-4-II-E), mouse neuroblastoma (Neuro-2a), human colon adenocarcinoma (HT-29), and human fetal lung (MRC-5) cell lines. Subsequently, detection and identification of the formed intermediates in the case of sulcotrione photocatalytic degradation using bare TiO2and TP-150 showed slightly different pathways of degradation. Furthermore, tentative pathways of sulcotrione photocatalytic degradation were proposed and discussed. Photocatalytic degradation of alprazolam in water suspension of brookite type TiO2 nanopowders prepared using hydrothermal route

AB  - Two series of nanocrystalline brookite-type powders have been synthesized by using combined sal gel hydrothermal method with titanium tetrachloride (TiCI4) as a precursor and hydrothermal temperature and reaction time varied in the range of 120-200 degrees C and 12-48 h, respectively. The effects of chosen synthesis parameters on structural, morphological and optical properties of synthesized powders have been investigated by the XRPD, SEM, EDS and BET measurements, as well Raman spectroscopy and spectroscopic ellipsometry. The XRPD results have shown that pure brookite phase, with mean crystallite size of -33 nm, has been obtained only in the sample synthesized at 200 degrees C, after 24 h of hydrothermal process. In all other samples anatase phase also appears, whereas rutile and sodium titanate phases have been noticed in the samples synthesized at lower temperatures. The presence of different titania phases has also been confirmed and analyzed by Raman scattering measurements. The SEM measurements have shown spindle-like particles in brookite-rich samples synthesized at 200 degrees C, whereas BET measurements have detected mesoporous structure in these samples. The properties of synthesized powders have been correlated to their photocatalytic efficiency, tested in degradation of alprazolam, one of the 5th generation benzodiazepines. The sample consisted of pure brookite has shown the highest efficiency in the photodegradation of alprazolam, practically equal to the activity of Degussa P25. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. AB  - The influence of La-doping in the range of 0.5-6.0 mol% on structural and morphological properties of TiO2 nanopowders synthesized by sol-gel routine has been investigated by XRPD, AFM, EDS and BET measurements, as well as Raman spectroscopy. The XRPD and Raman measurements have revealed the anatase phase as dominant in all nanopowders, with crystallite size decreasing from similar to 15 nm in pure TiO2 to similar to 12 nm in La-doped samples. The BET data suggest that all samples are fully mesoporous, with mean pore diameters in the range of similar to 6-8 nm. The specific surface area and the complexity of pore structure are greater in doped samples than in pure TiO2 sample. The spectroscopic ellipsometry has apparently shown that the band gap has been gradually increased with the increase of La content. The STM and STS techniques have been used successfully to evaluate the surface morphology and electronic properties of La-doped nanopowders. All investigated properties have been related to photocatalytic activity, tested in degradation of a metoprolol tartrate salt (0.05 mM), and induced by UV-radiation. All doped samples showed increased photocatalytic activity compared to pure TiO2, among which the 0.65 mol% La-doped sample appeared to be the most efficient. (C) 2013 Elsevier Inc. AB  - Pure and La3+ doped titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanopowders were obtained by sol gel and hydrothermal methods. A precursor was titanium tetrachloride and concentrations of dopants were 0.5 and 1.0 mol%. Procedures of both methods were the same, up to the last part of synthesis (the transformation from the mother liquor to oxide nanopowders), in order to find the influence of applied methods on the properties of nanopowders. XRD results have shown that all synthesized nanopowders were in the anatase phase. It was seen from DSC measurements that anatase to rutile phase transition took place at a higher temperature with a higher concentration of dopant (La3+). The samples obtained by the sol gel method had a higher temperature of phase transition than related samples obtained by the hydrothermal method. Nanopowder properties have been related to the photocatalytic activity, tested in degradation of the pharmaceutical alprazolam. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. All rights reserved.

abstract = "Pure and La3+ doped titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanopowders were obtained by sol gel and hydrothermal methods. A precursor was titanium tetrachloride and concentrations of dopants were 0.5 and 1.0 mol%. Procedures of both methods were the same, up to the last part of synthesis (the transformation from the mother liquor to oxide nanopowders), in order to find the influence of applied methods on the properties of nanopowders. XRD results have shown that all synthesized nanopowders were in the anatase phase. It was seen from DSC measurements that anatase to rutile phase transition took place at a higher temperature with a higher concentration of dopant (La3+). The samples obtained by the sol gel method had a higher temperature of phase transition than related samples obtained by the hydrothermal method. AB  - Titanium dioxide nanotubes (TNT) were synthesized via hydrothermal method and calcined at various temperatures. The obtained calcined TiO2 nanomaterials with specific elongation orientation were characterized by transmission and scanning electron microscopy (TEM, SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV/Vis diffuse reflection spectroscopy (DRS), Laser Doppler electrophoresis (LDE) and their textural properties were evaluated. The photocatalytic activity of obtained nanopowders was evaluated considering photodegradation rate of herbicide clomazone, rarely studied herbicide. The influence of calcination temperature of catalysts with elongated morphology on their photocatalytic activity was evaluated. The best results were obtained with TNT annealed at 700 degrees C, which can be assigned to the best balance between crystal structure, morphology and surface properties of nanoparticles induced by annealing. Also, the photocatalytic degradation rates of another two herbicides (picloram, and mecoprop) were compared, due to possibility that the efficiency of photo catalytic degradation is greatly influenced by the molecular structure. The mineralization degree of selected herbicides in the presence of TiO2 based photocatalysts was evaluated applying total organic carbon (TOC) measurements. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. AB  - The structural and morphological properties of mesoporous anatase nanopowders, synthesized by sol-gel method, have been modified by varying the duration of calcination, in order to obtain more efficient photocatalyst than Degussa P25 in the degradation of relatively large pollutant molecules ( GT 1 nm in size). According to X-ray diffraction analysis, the crystallite size was increased from 13 to 17.5 nm with the increase of calcination time from 1 to 7 h. The analysis of nitrogen sorption experimental data revealed that all samples were mesoporous, with a mean pore diameters in the range of similar to 5-9 nm. The corrugated pore structure model was employed to evaluate pore structure tortuosity. Nanopowder properties have been related to the photocatalytic activity, tested in the degradation of metoprolol tartrate salt, selective beta(1)-blocker used in a variety of cardiovascular diseases, with molecular size of 0.610 nm x 1.347 nm. The study has demonstrated that samples calcined for 4 and 5 h have displayed higher photocatalytic performance than Degussa P25, whereas the sample calcined for 3 h has shown comparable activity. AB  - A study of photocatalytic activity of bare as prepared, bare aged and dopamine surface modified colloidal TiO2 nanoparticles was obtained following degradation reaction of herbicide RS-2-(4-chloro-o-tolyloxy)propionic acid under UV light irradiation. Results showed that the most active photocatalyst is bare aged TiO2 and the least active are dopamine modified nanoparticles. Results are discussed in the light of surface structure of TiO2 nanoparticles. The study of surface modification of TiO2 nanoparticles (4.5 nm, TiO2 NPs) with dopamine was also performed. The formation of inner-sphere charge-transfer complexes results in red shift of semiconductor absorption threshold (600 nm), compared to bare TiO2 NPs (380 nm). Effective band gap energy of 3.2 eV for bare TiO2 NPs is reduced to 2.1 eV for TiO2/dopamine charge transfer complexes. The binding structure was investigated by UV-vis and FTIR spectroscopy. The obtained optimal geometry for binding of dopamine to surface Ti atoms was binuclear bidentate-bridging. From the Benesi-Hildebrand plot, stability constant of the order 10(3) M-1 has been determined. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The photocatalytic activity of as-prepared powders has been tested for the degradation of metoprolol tartrate salt, a selective beta-blocker used to treat a variety of cardiovascular diseases, and compared to photocatalytic activity obtained from Degussa P25. Nanosized TiO2 powders prepared from TiCl4 and amyl-alcohol, calcined at 550 A degrees C, displayed an activity comparable to Degussa P25, whereas the sample from the same series, calcined at 650 A degrees C, showed higher photocatalytic activity in the whole range of the catalyst loading. Structural, morphological and surface properties of synthesized TiO2 nanopowders have been investigated by XRD, SEM, EDS and BET measurements, as well as FTIR and Raman spectroscopy, in order to find out the material properties which enable rapid an efficient decomposition of metoprolol under UV radiation.

AB  - The aim of this work was to study the efficiency of Fe- and N-doped titania suspensions in the photocatalytic degradation of the herbicides RS-2-(4-chloro-o-tolyloxy)propionic acid (mecoprop, MCPP), (4-chloro-2-methylphenoxy)acetic acid (MCPA), and 3,6-dichloropyridine-2-carboxylic acid (clopyralid, CP) under the visible light (lambda GT = 400 nm) irradiation. The obtained results were compared with those of the corresponding undoped TiO(2) (rutile/anatase) and of the most frequently used TiO(2) Degussa P25. Computational modeling procedures were used to optimize geometry and molecular electrostatic potentials of MCPP, MCPA and CP and discuss the obtained results. The results indicate that the efficiency of photocatalytic degradation is greatly influenced by the molecular structure of the compound. Lowering of the band gap of titanium dioxide by doping is not always favorable for increasing photocatalytic efficiency of degradation. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

abstract = "The aim of this work was to study the efficiency of Fe- and N-doped titania suspensions in the photocatalytic degradation of the herbicides RS-2-(4-chloro-o-tolyloxy)propionic acid (mecoprop, MCPP), (4-chloro-2-methylphenoxy)acetic acid (MCPA), and 3,6-dichloropyridine-2-carboxylic acid (clopyralid, CP) under the visible light (lambda GT = 400 nm) irradiation. The obtained results were compared with those of the corresponding undoped TiO(2) (rutile/anatase) and of the most frequently used TiO(2) Degussa P25. Computational modeling procedures were used to optimize geometry and molecular electrostatic potentials of MCPP, MCPA and CP and discuss the obtained results. The results indicate that the efficiency of photocatalytic degradation is greatly influenced by the molecular structure of the compound. AB  - The work describes a study of the oxidation power of nitrogen-doped titanium dioxide (TiO2) suspensions for photocatalytic degradation of the herbicides RS-2-(4-chloro-o-tolyloxy) prop ionic acid (mecoprop) and (4-chloro-2methylphenoxy)acetic acid (MCPA) using various light sources. The nitrogen-doped TiO2 crystalline nanopowder was synthesized by calcination of the hydrolysis product of titanium tetraisopropoxide in ammonia. The product was an anatase crystal phase with mean particle diameter 7-15 nm and specific surface area of 121 +/- 1 m(2) g(-1). It showed visible-light photocatalytic activity at about 530 rim. Although nitrogen concentration in nitrogen-doped TiO2 is low ( LT 1 atomic %), it appeared to be about 1.5 times more efficient than TiO2 Degussa P25 when artificial visible light was used for mecoprop and MCPA degradation, and about six times compared to direct photolysis. It was found that the optimal content of nitrogen-doped TiO2 was 4 mg cm(-3). The photodegradation of the herbicide aromatic ring takes place simultaneously with chloride evolution, whereby the reaction in both cases follows first-order kinetics.

AB  - Titanium dioxide nanopowders doped with different amounts of Fe ions were prepared by coprecipitation method. Obtained materials were characterized by structural (XRD), morphological (TEM and SEM), optical (UV/vis reflection and photoluminescence, and Raman), and analytical techniques (XPS and ICP-OES). XRD analysis revealed rutile crystalline phase for doped and undoped titanium dioxide obtained in the same manner. Diameter of the particles was 5-7 nm. The presence of iron ions was confirmed by XPS and ICP-OES. Doping process moved absorption threshold of TiO2 into visible spectrum range. Photocatalytic activity was also checked. Doped nanopowders showed normal and up-converted photoluminescence.

AB  - The kinetics and possible mechanism of the photocatalytic degradation of herbicide mecoprop, in UV illuminated aqueous colloids of synthesized nanosized TiO2 were investigated. The rate of degradation was studied by H-1 NMR, UV spectrometry, as well as by potentiometric titrimetric determination of generated chloride. The catalyst dosage and effects of other kinetic factors on the photocatalytic degradation, such as initial substrate concentration, temperature and type of TiO2 were investigated as well. The degradation rates were found to be strongly influenced by the above parameters. It was found that photocatalytic efficiency is lower and that a smaller number of observed organic intermediates (only 4-chloro-2-methylphenol and acetic acid) was detected than those observed in the presence of TiO2 (Degussa P-25). Kinetics of the degradation were also monitored for direct photolysis, as well as for solar degradation in the presence and in the absence of TiO2. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Potentiometric application of boron- and phosphorus-doped glassy carbon electrodes

AB  - A comparative study was carried out of the potentiometric application of boron- and phosphorus-doped and undoped glassy carbon samples prepared at the same heal treatment temperature (HTT 1000 degreesC). The electrochemical activities of the obtained electrode materials were investigated on the example of argentometric titrations. It was found that the electrochemical behaviour of the doped glassy carbon samples are very similar to a Sigri (undoped) glassy carbon sample (HTT 2400 degreesC). The experiments showed that the potentiometric response depends on the polarization mode, the nature of the sample, the pretreatment of the electrode surface, and the nature of the supporting electro lyre. The amounts of iodide, bromide, and of chloride were determined to be 1.27 mg, 0.80 mg and 0.54 mg, respectively, with a maximum relative standard deviation of less than 1.1 %. The obtained results are in good agreement with the results of comparative potentiometric titrations using a silver indicator electrode. The titration method was applied to the indirect determination of pyridoxine hydrochloride, i.e., vitamin B-6.
