AB - In this work two methods of preparation of yttrium orthovanadate nanopowders were presented: Solid State Reaction (top – down approach) and Solution Combustion Synthesis (bottom – up approach). For starting structural characterization, X – Ray Powder Diffraction (XPRD) and Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) were used. We report the change in reflection spectra in europium doped YVO4 nanopowders with comparison to its bulk analog. In UV – Vis reflection spectra we consider the change in values of band gap in these structures, after resizing it from bulk to nanomaterial. In Far – Infrared (FIR) reflection spectra, we registered the existence of Surface Optical Phonon (SOP) and different multi – phonon processes which alter the reflection spectra of bulk YVO4 . The influence of Eu ions is reflected through multi – phonon processes that occur and are connected with energy transfer from YVO4 lattice to Eu ions. All IR spectra were modeled using classical oscillator model with Drude part added which takes into account the free carrier contribution. Since our samples are distinctively inhomogeneous materials, we use Effective Medium theory in Maxwell Garnett approximation to model its effective dieletric function.

AB - Nanocomposites derived from nano-scale inorganic/organic particles that are dispersed in a polymer matrix homogeneously have attracted considerable attention [1-3]. The diverse properties of numerous polymers to choose from are well documented, including both plastics and elastomers, which are the main two types of polymers. Organic/inorganic hybrid materials offer highly interesting and versatile applications when incorporated with a polymer. Among the inorganic/polymer nanocomposites, metal sulfides/polymer nanocomposites have been researched extensively due to their interesting optical, electrical and mechanical properties. Their excellent physical and chemical properties in various fields, such as catalysis, sensors, solar cells, photo detectors, light emitting diodes and laser communication, have made them very attractive and promising materials. Semiconductor particles immobilized in a polymer matrix with nano-scale grain size show different properties relative to the same material in bulk form because of quantum size effects. Many different synthetic approaches, like thermal evaporation, chemical bath deposition, chemical vapor deposition (CVD), laser ablation, hydrothermal, homogeneous precipitation in an organic matrix, sonochemical and sol–gel methods, have been employed for the synthesis of metal sulfide nanoparticles. In this work we investigate the structural and optical properties of polymer nanocomposites prepared by the incorporation of ZnS nanoparticles into the matrices of polymer poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). The structural studies of the metal sulfides/polymer nanocomposites were carried out by Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy and Far-infrared spectroscopy. The dielectric function of ZnS nanoparticles is modeled as a mixture of homogenous spherical inclusion in air, by the Maxwell-Garnet formula. In the analysis of the far-infrared reflection spectra, appearance of combined plasmon-LO phonon modes with high phonon damping are observed, which causes decreases of coupled plasmon-phonon frequencies.

AB - Phonon spectra of Cd1-xMnxS (x=0; 0.005; 0.10; 0.15) quantum dots (d~5nm) investigated by means of far-infrared reflection in spectral range 80-600cm-1 and temperature range 80 – 300K. The Cd1-xMnxS quantum dots have been synthesized by using aqueous solution precipitation. The analysis of the reflection spectra was made by a fitting procedure. A numerical model for calculating the reflectivity coefficient for complex system, which includes surface active agent (in our case Na(PO3)6) and quantum dots (Cd1-xMnxS) has been developed. Together with the modes of Na(PO3)6 and quantum dots CdS we obtain the new mode of Mn at about 100cm-1. The position of this mode is discussed in the frame of linear chain model with both mass and force constant defects. The possibility of existence of ultra small nano-size clusters of MnS (~0.5nm) in Cd1-xMnxS nanaoparticles is also discussed.
