AB - A novel porous gold polymer composite was prepared by the functionalization of a glycidyl methacrylate-based copolymer (pGME) with ethylene diamine (pGME-en), and activation by gold (pGME-en/Au), in a simple batch adsorption procedure in an acid solution, at room temperature. Detailed characterization of the pGME-en before and after activation was performed. The main focuses of this research were the design of a method that can enable the recovery of gold and the reuse of this multipurpose sorbent as an antimicrobial agent. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis pointed out amine groups as the primary binding sites for Au activation, while hydroxyl groups also contributed to the chelation reaction. pGME-en exhibited fast gold adsorption with an adsorption half-time of 5 min and an equilibrium time of 30 min. The maximal adsorption capacity was about 187 mg/g. The analysis of sorption experimental data with a non-linear surface reaction and diffusion-based kinetic models revealed the pseudo-second-order and Avrami model as the best fit, with unambiguous control by liquid film and intra-particle diffusion. The biological activity studies against Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria monocytogenes, Escherichia coli, and Candida albicans revealed moderate activity of pGME-en/Au against different bacterial and fungal species. pGME-en/Au was stable in a saline solution, with a release of approximately 2.3 mg/g after 24 h.

AB - Magnetic and non-magnetic macroporous crosslinked copolymers of glycidyl methacrylate and trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate were prepared by suspension copolymerization and functionalized with diethylenetriamine. The samples were characterized by mercury porosimetry, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis (FTIR-ATR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and SQUID magnetometry. The FTIR-ATR analysis of synthesized magnetic nanocomposites confirmed the presence of magnetite and successful amino-functionalization. Non-functionalized and amino-functionalized nanocomposites exhibited superparamagnetic behavior at 300 K, with a saturation magnetization of 5.0 emu/g and 2.9 emu/g, respectively. TEM analysis of the magnetic nanocomposite has shown that magnetic nanoparticles were homogeneously dispersed in the polymer matrix. It was demonstrated that incorporation of magnetic nanoparticles enhanced the thermal stability of the magnetic nanocomposite in comparison to the initial non-magnetic macroporous copolymer. © 2019, Association of Chemists and Chemical Engineers of Serbia. AB - The presented study describes macroporous crosslinked poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) [PGME] functionalized with diethylenetriamine [PGME-deta] as a potential recovery agent for Mo(VI) oxyanions from aqueous solutions. Sorption studies were carried out by varying experimental conditions (pH, time, concentration, temperature). Kinetics of Mo(VI) sorption was investigated in batch (static) experiments, in the temperature range 298–343 K. Sorption dynamics data were fitted to seven chemical-reaction and particle-diffusion models. The kinetics studies showed that Mo(VI) sorption adhered to the pseudo-second-order model under all investigated operating conditions. The sorption kinetics was determined to be governed by both the intraparticle diffusion and the external film diffusion to a lesser extent. The temperature rise promotes the molybdate species removal, with the maximum experimental uptake capacity of 4.02 mmol g− 1 at 298 K, at the selected pH which is consistent with the predominance range of hydrolized polynuclear Mo(VI) forms and optimum electrostatic attraction.

AB - The adsorption properties of two zeolite types, faujasite (NaY, ZnY, CoY) and LTA-4A zeolite (NaA, ZnA, CoA), towards technetium were studied in batch static experiments. The Si/Al ratio, acidity, dealumination, chargebalance cations of zeolite, contact time and temperature determined the adsorption efficiency. The maximum removal efficiency of 98.8% and Kdvalue (2.06 × 10−4 cm3 g−1) was achieved using CoY (zeolite type Y). The kinetics of technetium adsorption followed the pseudo-second order model. The TcO2adsorption is mainly due to the hydrogen bonds between protons of the zeolitic structural OH groups (Bronsted acid center) and oxygen from the TcO2−.

AB - In this study, macroporous poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) was synthesized by suspension copolymerization, functionalized by ring-opening reaction of the pendant epoxy groups with diethylene triamine and used for immobilization of Pd(II) ions from chloride and nitrate solutions under batch experimental condition. The amino-functionalized sample and samples with immobilized Pd(II) ions were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis and scanning energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX). The electrochemical behavior of electrodes composed of synthesized samples was tested in 0.1 M H2SO4 by means of cyclic voltammetry (CV). The shape of recorded CV showed dependence on the type of Pd-salt used for Pd immobilization. The reaction of oxidation of 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) from 0.1 M H2SO4 at investigated samples was also studied. Electrooxidation of 4-CP resulted in passivation and formation of reversible hydroquinone/benzoquinone on both investigated electrodes, although hydroquinone/benzoquinone formation was more pronounced on Pd immobilized from nitrite solution. Samples were characterized by elemental analysis, mercury porosimetry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, SQUID magnetometry and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The selected amino-functionalized sample was tested as a potential sorbent for the Mo(VI) and Re(VII) oxyanions from aqueous solutions. The influence of pH, ionic strength and possible interfering of cations and anions was investigated. Equilibrium data were analyzed with Langmuir, Freundlich and Tempkin adsorption isotherm models. Sorption studies were carried out in a batch competitive experiments, in the pH range 1-8, at 298 K. Obtained results indicate that 92% of Re(VII) and 98% of Mo(VI) were sorbed at pH 2. AB - Macroporous copolymers of poly[(glycidyl methacrylate)-co-(ethylene glycol dimethacrylate)] (PGME) with various crosslinker (ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) concentrations and porosity parameters and additionally functionalized with hexamethylene diamine (PGME-HD) were tested as potential Cr(VI) oxyanion sorbents from aqueous solutions. Kinetics of Cr(VI) sorption was investigated in the temperature range 298-343 K and the results were fitted to chemical reaction and particle diffusion models. The Cr(VI) sorption obeys the pseudo-second-order model with definite influence of pore diffusion. A temperature rise promotes chromium removal, with a maximum experimental uptake capacity of 4.21 mmol g(-1) at 343 K for the sample with the highest amino group concentration. Equilibrium data were analysed with Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin adsorption isotherm models. Thermodynamic parameters, i.e. Gibbs free energy (G(0)), enthalpy (H-0) and entropy change (S-0) and activation energy of sorption (E-a), were calculated. The Cr(VI) adsorption onto PGME-HD was found to be spontaneous and endothermic, with increased randomness in the system. Desorption experiments show that chromium anion sorption was reversible and the PGME-HD sample GMA 60 HD was easily regenerated with 0.1 mol L-1 NaOH up to 90% recovery in the fourth sorption/desorption cycle. In the fifth cycle, a substantial sorption loss of 37% was observed. (c) 2016 Society of Chemical Industry

Experimental results indicated relatively fast TcO4- sorption kinetics that depends on pH and ionic strength, with a high removal efficiency of 99% within 180 min in the pH range 3.0-5.0. The pseudo-second-order model yielded the best fit for the kinetic data.

AB - A novel method combining a traditional immersion precipitation process for making membranes with photopolymerization and crosslinking of functional monomers included in the casting solution was used to prepare asymmetric polyethersulfone membranes with submicron particles incorporating glycidyl methacrylate copolymer. In order to introduce sulfonic groups, the epoxide rings of glycidyl methacrylate were opened using two methods. The first method was functionalization with sodium sulfite, and the second was functionalization with sulfuric acid and then grafting with 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid. The obtained membranes were characterized using infrared spectroscopy, conductometric titration and water permeability measurements. Scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy were used to investigate the surface morphology and topology of the membranes. Dynamic adsorption of rhodamine B as a model dye was used to demonstrate the suitability of these novel membranes for membrane adsorption since the adsorption capacity for dye cations was much better for the membranes functionalized with sodium sulfite and the membranes grafted with 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid compared to the non-functionalized membranes.

AB - Synthesis of an unconventional resin based on 4-vinylpyridine (4-VP) and its Cu(II) sorption behavior were studied. Three samples of macroporous crosslinked poly(4-vinylpyridine-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) (P4VPE) with different porosity parameters were prepared by suspension copolymerization by varying the n-heptane amount in the inert component. The samples were characterized by mercury porosimetry, elemental analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The sorption of P4VPE for Cu(II) ions, determined under non-competitive conditions, was relatively rapid, i.e., the maximum capacity was reached within 30 min. The maximum experimental sorption capacity for the sample with the highest values of pore diameter and specific pore volume (sample 3, Q(eq) = 89 mg g(-1)) was 17.5 times higher than for the sample with the lowest values of pore diameter and specific pore volume (sample 1, Q(eq) = 5.1 mg g(-1)). Since the values for pyridine content in all P4VPE samples were almost the same, it was concluded that the porosity parameters have predominant influence on Cu(II) sorption rates on P4VPE. The sorption behavior and the rate-controlling mechanisms were analyzed using six kinetic models (pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order, Elovich, intraparticle diffusion, Bangham and Boyd models). XPS study clarified the nature of the formed P4VPE-Cu(II) species.

Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX) were used for the determination of surface morphology of the copolymer particles. The sorption behavior of heavy metals Cu(II), Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions sorption was investigated in batch static experiments under non-competitive conditions at room temperature (298 K). The obtained results were fitted to pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order and intraparticle diffusion kinetic model. The kinetics studies showed that Cu(II), Cd(II) and Pb(II) sorption obeys the pseudo-second-order model under all investigated operating conditions with evident influence of pore diffusion. AB - Polyethersulfone membranes with integrated negatively-charged hydrogel of crosslinked poly(acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid) were prepared by a combination of a liquid phase inversion process with photopolymerization and crosslinking of functional monomers included in the casting solution. A designed experiment was conducted to select the optimal composition for preparing membranes with a sufficient degree of swelling and ion exchange capacity. Scanning electron microscopy images revealed an ultrafine hybrid structure with an interconnected network of submicron particles embedded within the microporous polyethersulfone support. An intramembrane diffusion model was used to describe kinetics of heavy metal sorption by these hydrogels and the calculated apparent diffusion coefficients were 2–3 times larger than in commercial ion-exchange resins. Equilibrium sorption of heavy metals was described using a semi-empirical Langmuir model.

AB - Asymmetric polyethersulfone membranes with submicron particles comprising crosslinked poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid) were prepared by a combination of a traditional liquid phase inversion process for making membranes with photopolymerization and crosslinking of functional monomers included in the casting solution. Scanning electron microscope images of the membrane cross-section revealed a hybrid structure with an interconnected network of submicron particles embedded within the porous polyethersulfone support. Permeation of toluidine blue solutions through non-functionalized membranes showed a dramatic effect of 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid concentration in the casting solution on the dynamic adsorption performance. The epoxide groups present in glycidyl methacrylate copolymer were transformed into amine functionalities by ring opening under alkaline conditions. Permeation of dilute Cu2+ solutions through functionalized membranes demonstrated that the plate height for some of these membranes was an order of magnitude smaller than for commercial particle-filled membranes used in solid phase extraction. AB - Novel macroporous functionalized copolymers with different cross-linker concentrations and porosity parameters were synthesized by reaction of the pendant epoxy groups of poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) (poly(GMA-co-EGDMA)) with hexamethylene diamine 1,3-bis(3-aminopropyl)tetramethyldisiloxane, and alpha,omega-diaminopropyl poly(dimethylsiloxane). The copolymers were prepared in forms, of spherical beads and characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR); C-13 and Si-29 solid-state NMR, mercury porosimetry, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Copolymers prepared with the higher cross-linker concentrations have better thermal stability, higher glass transition temperatures; higher specific surface areas, and smaller pore diameters that correspond to half Of the pore volumes. Out results show that functionalization significantly changed porosity parameters, mechanism of thermal degradation; and increased thermal, stability in comparison with the initial copolymers. These macroporous copolymers could potentially have many applications, i.e. for sorption of heavy and precious metals or as Material for gas chromatography columns.

These macroporous copolymers could potentially have many applications, i.e. for sorption of heavy and precious metals or as Material for gas chromatography columns.",

AB - Polyethersulfone membranes with integrated negatively-charged hydrogel of crosslinked poly (acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid) were prepared by a combination of a liquid phase inversion process with photopolymerization and crosslinking of functional monomers included in the casting solution. An intramembrane diffusion model was used to describe kinetics of heavy metal sorption by these hydrogels and the calculated apparent diffusion coefficients were 2-3 times larger than in commercial ion-exchange resins. Equilibrium sorption of heavy metals was described using a semi-empirical Langmuir model. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

studied. The pseudo-second-order (PSO) model provided the best fit for the
kinetic data, while the intraparticle diffusion (IPD) model indicated a
pronounced influence of the porous structure on the sorption rates. The
maximum sorption capacity was found to be 84 mg g-1 and 74 % removal

AB - Inverse gas chromatography at infinite dilution was applied to determine the thermodynamic interactions of poly(l-lactide) (PLLA) and the composite of biphasic calcium phosphate and PLLA (BCP/PLLA). The specific retention volumes, , of 11 organic compounds of different chemical nature and polarity (non-polar, donor or acceptor) were determined in the temperature range of 308-378 K for PLLA and 308-398 K for BCP/PLLA. The weight fraction activity coefficients of test sorbates, , and the Flory-Huggins interaction parameters, , were estimated and discussed in terms of interactions of the sorbates with PLLA and BCP/PLLA. Also, the partial molar free energy, , the partial molar heat of mixing, , the sorption molar free energy, , the sorption enthalpy, , and the sorption entropy, , were analyzed. A different chromatographic behavior of the two investigated samples, PLLA and BCP/PLLA, was observed. The values of indicated n-alkanes, diethyl ether, tetrahydrofurane (THF), cyclohexane, benzene, dioxane (except for 338 K), and ethyl acetate (EtAc) (except for 338 K) as non-solvents, and chloroform (CHCl3) as good solvent (except for 378 K) for PLLA. For BCP/PLLA, CHCl3, EtAc (for 378 K), dioxane (except for 378 K), and THF were indicated as good solvents.

AB - In this paper, macroporous glycidyl methacrylate and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate copolymer functionalized with diethylene triamine (PGME-deta), was evaluated as Reactive Black 5 (RB5) sorbent. Batch RB5 removal from aqueous solution by PGME-deta was investigated by varying pH, contact time, sorbent dosage, initial dye concentration and temperature. The sorption is pH sensitive having maximum at pH 2 (dye removal of 85%), decreasing with the increase of pH (dye removal of 24% at pH 11) after 60 min. Sorption kinetics was fitted to chemical-reaction and particle-diffusion models (pseudo-first-, pseudo-second-order, intraparticle diffusion and Mckay models). The pseudo-second-order kinetic model accurately predicted the RB5 amount sorbed under all investigated operating conditions, while the intraparticle diffusion was the dominant rate-limiting mechanism. The diffusion mechanism was more prevalent with the decrease in temperature and the increase in concentration. The isotherm data was best fitted with the Langmuir model, indicating homogeneous distribution of active sites on PGME-deta and monolayer sorption, with the maximum sorption capacity of 353 mg g(-1). The calculated sorption rates improved with increasing temperature and an activation energy close to 40 kj mol(-1) was determined, suggesting that chemisorption was also rate-controlling.
