AB - In this paper, we considered a molecular structure that consists of a molecular chain and an additional molecule (donor or acceptor) that can inject (or remove) single excitation (vibron, electron, etc.) onto the molecular chain. We assumed that the excitation forms a self-trapped state due to the interaction with mechanical oscillations of the chain structure elements. We analyzed the energy spectra of the excitation and showed that its state (when it migrates to the molecular chain) has the properties of the nonadiabatic polaron state. The conditions under which the excitation can migrate from one subsystem to another one were considered. It was shown that the presence of a “donor” molecule cannot significantly change the properties of the excitation located on the molecular chain. At the same time, the molecular chain can affect the position of the energy level of the excitation localized on the donor subsystem. Indirectly, this can influence the process of excitation migration from one subsystem to another one. The influence of the basic energy parameters of the system and the environment temperature on this process are discussed. The entire system was assumed to be in thermal equilibrium with the environment.

AB - We present a theoretical prediction of a novel, nonEIT, mechanism for the achievement of a transparency window. It relies on an intrinsically nonlinear (soliton type) mechanism which may be exploited for the production of slow light, which may appear in a photonic band-gap structure: the infinite coupled cavity array (CCA), filled with two-level systems - qubits. Each cavity contains a single qubit. The most important prediction is substantial dependence of the pulse transparency on its width. In particular, the medium is opaque for very short pulses with carrier wave frequency below the photonic gap. When the pulse width exceeds the critical one, a twin transparency window separated by a finite band gap appears in the SIT pulse dispersion law. Both low-frequency TW and the SIT pulse band gap lie entirely within the polaritonic band gap.

AB - We study quantum features of electromagnetic radiation propagating in a waveguide built of an infinite array of super-conducting qubits (SCQ) placed within a resonator comprised of two massive superconductors. Such engineered media, so-called superconducting quantum metamaterials (SCQMM), have a great potential for quantum information processing and communications and devise a comprehensive study of the nature of the “light”-matter interaction. We predict the emergence of novel in-terference effects with possible practical applications. For exam-ple, photons may exhibit a nontrivial dispersion relation such as band edges and band gaps. In this way, QMMs may be viewed as photonic crystals. This, in turn, enriches their potential for practi-cal applications and provides novel means for devising compre-hensive studies of both practical and fundamental aspects of the interaction of artificial atoms and the EM field.

AB - We study quantum features of electromagnetic radiation propagating in a one-dimensional superconducting quantum metamaterial composed of an infinite chain of charge qubits placed within two stripe massive superconducting resonators. The quantum-mechanical model is derived assuming weak fields and that, at low temperatures, each qubit is either unoccupied or occupied by a single Cooper pair. We demonstrate the emergence of two bands of single-photon qubit bound states with the energies lying outside the photon continuum—one is above and the second slightly below the linear photon band. The higher energy band varies slowly with the qubit-photon center of mass quasimomentum. It becomes practically flat provided that the electromagnetic energy is far below the Josephson energy when the latter is small compared to the charging energy. The dispersion of the lower band is practically identical to that of free photons. The emergence of bound states may cause radiation trapping indicating possible applicability for the control of photon transport in superconducting qubit-based artificial media.

AB - We focus on self-induced transparency (SIT) in the propagation of a pulse in a dispersive medium. The latter can be an ordinary optical medium or, more interestingly, a quantum metamaterial. In both cases we consider a sequence of two level atoms each with a characteristic resonant frequency ω0. The propagation features are controlled by the ratio of the pulse frequency ω over the dipole resonant frequency, i.e. on the quantity X=ω/ω0. We consider analytically two pulse limits, viz. the sharp line limit as well as the inhomogeneouly broadened case. In the first case we find that for pulse frequencies larger than ω0, i.e. for X>1 the SIT pulse may be fully stopped through absorption by the medium provided its time width exceeds a certain critical value. In the latter case of inhomogeneously broadened medium we find no such frequency restrictions provided the pulse is wide enough. As a result an SIT pulse can be arbitrarily arrested by the absorbing medium. This dispersion-induced pulse stopping is a manifestation of the quantum nature of the medium and of possible use in metamaterial applications. © 2020 Elsevier Ltd

AB - We show that the self-induced transparency of optical phonons may appear in a systems consisting of a two level atoms interacting with elastic waves. The presence of the gap in phonon spectrum substantially enhances the pulse delay in respect to the acoustic self induced transparency phenomena. One of the main characteristics of the predicted phenomenon is the appearance of the critical velocity of the self-induced transparency pulse which, in the absorbing media, represents the upper limit which pulse may reach. Its magnitude is determined by the ratio of the phonon gap and the energy difference of the two level system. This feature opens a new way for the control of the speed of elastic waves. We believe that, in the view of the emerging new quantum technologies relying on creation and trapping of the coherent phonons interacting with artificial atoms, some practical implementations of interest for the storage and manipulation of quantum information may be realised on the basis of our work. AB - We consider the properties of the large acoustic polarons in a media composed of three parallel coupled identical macromolecular chains in an equilateral triangular arrangement. The existence of the truly three-dimensional large polarons has been demonstrated. Their appearance demands the complex interference of the effects of the reduced dimensionality, the nature and strength of the interchain coupling and particular geometrical arrangement of molecular chains. Different types of solutions were found and criteria for their existence were formulated in terms of the dimensionless interchain coupling parameter. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

AB - We study the properties of the single large adiabatic polaron in the substances composed of three parallel equally separated coplanar molecular chains. Particular attention has been devoted to the influence of the interchain coupling strength on polaron stability in order to elucidate the origin of the large polaron existence, which, contrary to the predictions of continuum adiabatic theories may persist in realistic conditions. Our results indicate the existence of the effectively two-dimensional stationary polarons with comparably large longitudinal radius while the transverse one ranges from zero, in the absence of interchain coupling, to approximately twice of the interchain separation when coupling strength tends towards the infinity. These two-dimensional polarons are both energetically and dynamically stable. This is quite the opposite to the expectations based on the traditional adiabatic large polaron theories which, in the case of short ranged electron phonon interaction, predict that the stable large polaron may exist only in 1D systems. Stability of these 2D polarons increases with the increase of the interchain coupling strength so that they may be comparably more stable than the pure 1D polarons. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. AB - We examine the effects of the interchain coupling on the properties of the large adiabatic polaron in the two chain model. In dependence of the strength of the interchain coupling (gamma) two different types of polaron solutions were found. In the weak coupling regime (gamma LT 1/2), polaron is confined to a single chain. As coupling increases continual transition towards the delocalization takes place - polaron amplitudes on both chains gradually become equalized, in the same time, its binding energy vanishes. Finally, above the critical coupling strength, polaron is fully delocalized - equally distributed over the both chains while its energy lies within the band of free states. Our the most specific prediction is the substantial impact of the polaron motion on its character. This implies the emergence of the two different regimes in charge transfer processes which may be experimentally verified. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - Large adiabatic polarons in anisotropic crystals in the presence of constant magnetic field have been studied within the Holstein molecular crystal model in the continuum approximation. It was shown that magnetic field directed along the symmetry axis induces transverse confinement which may stabilize large polarons. They represent localized (soliton-like) nonlinear structure uniformly propagating along the symmetry axis and rotating around it in the same time. Such objects exist in 3D lattice provided that coupling constant and magnetic field do not exceed certain critical values. In contrast with pure 1D systems existence of large polarons is possible in a quite wider region of the values of coupling constant which may attain considerably higher values than in the pure 1D media. Furthermore, polaron effective mass, depending on the intensity of the applied magnetic field, may be considerably lighter than that of the the pure 1D polarons for the same values of coupling constant. This is the most significant difference with respect to pure 1D systems in the absence of magnetic field and may have substantial impact on polaron transport properties.

AB - The features of the moving large polaron are investigated within Holsteins molecular crystal model. The necessity to account for the phonon dispersion is emphasized and its impact on polaron properties is examined in detail. It was found that the large polaron dynamics is described by the nonlocal nonlinear Schrodinger equation. The character of its solutions is determined by the degree of nonlocality, which is specified by the polaron velocity and group velocity of the lattice modes. An analytic solution for the polaron wavefunction is obtained in the weakly nonlocal limit. It was found that the polaron velocity and phonon dispersion have a significant impact on the parameters and dynamics of large polarons. The polaron amplitude and effective mass increase while its spatial extent decreases with a rise in the degree of nonlocality. The criterion for the stability of large polaron is formulated in terms of the values of the degree of nonlocality, the magnitude of the basic energy parameters of the system and the polaron velocity. It turns out that the large polaron velocity cannot exceed a relatively small limiting value. A similar limitation on large polaron velocity has not been found in previous studies. The consequences of these results on polaron dynamics in realistic conditions are discussed.

We predict that small-polaron effect should produce characteristic temperature variation of phonon frequencies and small-polaron binding energy. These effects should be observed in the experiments such as measurements of the speed of sound and infrared absorption spectra of molecular crystals which open an interesting possibility for the indirect confirmation of the existence of self-trapped states in molecular chains. Infrared absorption spectra may be especially interesting in that sense since the anticipated temperature variation of binding energy would be observed as a shift of the position of the unconventional (temperature dependent) peak in the IR absorption spectrum towards the position of the normal (temperature independent) one. AB - We study the conductivity of the linear molecular chains taking into account the changes of phonon spectra due to the small–polaron effect. It was found that the phonon hardening may lead to a considerable enhancement of the band as well as hopping conductivity. Character and the degree of these changes are determined by the values of the basic physical parameters of system, coupling constant and adiabatic parameter, and temperature as well. In particular: the increase of adiabatic parameter intensifies the hardening of phonon spectrum which in turn leads to a significant increase of the small–polaron conductivity. Quite on the contrary the increase of the coupling constant has the opposite tendency. The rise of temperature has practically the same consequences. This is the consequence of the increase of the effective coupling constant with the rise of temperature.

AB - Dynamics and the stability of the multivibron solitons in molecular chains have been examined by means of the perturbation method based upon the inverse scattering transform. We demonstrate that due to the coupling with phonons the soliton radiates energy which causes its slowing down and gradual decay of its amplitude. It was shown that the soliton lifetime depends strongly on temperature and the values of the basic physical parameters of the system. On the basis of these results the possible role of the multivibron solitons in the intramolecular vibrational energy transfer has been critically assessed.

AB - The Fokker-Planck equation for multivibron solitons interacting with lattice vibrations in a molecular chain has been derived by means of the nonequilibrium statistical operator method. It was shown that a soliton undergoes diffusive motion characterized by two substantially different diffusion coefficients. The first one corresponds to the ordinary: (Einsteinian or dissipative) diffusion and characterizes the soliton Brownian motion, while the second one corresponds to the anomalous diffusion connected with frictionless displacement of the soliton center of mass coordinate due to the interaction with phonons. Both processes are the consequence of the Cherenkov-like radiation of phonon quanta arising when soliton velocity approaches the phase speed of sound. [S1063-651X(99)01707-9].

An interpolation method is applied to cover the whole range of system parameters. In the system phase diagram we specify the areas where different ST states may exist. AB - The influence of the anharmonic vibron-phonon coupling, arising on account of a dressing effect, on the characteristics of the lattice subsystem in quasi-one-dimensional molecular crystals was examined within the pseudo-harmonic phonon approximation. It was found that solitons could induce specific modifications of the speed of sound which shows a temperature dependence quite different to that in the case of the linear excitations. The possibility of an indirect experimental verification of the existence of solitons in molecular chains is suggested on the basis of these predictions.

AB - The dressing effect due to the quantum nature of phonons may cause the creation of bound states of several vibrons in the molecular chain. The possibility of creating soliton states of this type is discussed for the simple Frohlich one-dimensional model. The regions of the system parameter space where different mechanisms dominate the behaviour of such entities are characterized.

AB - The existence of a two-vibron (amide-I quanta) bound state has been examined within the framework of a two-site realization of the Davydov model. The parameter space of the system is divided into two regions where the nature of pairing and the character of bound states are determined by the quite different physical mechanisms, The validity of the semiclassical approximation was discussed.
