AB - Nanoparticle (NP) signal enhancement is a novel, intensively studied and applied methodology in laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (NELIBS) [1,2]. In the present study, we tested the effect of the duration, intensity-time profile and wavelength of the laser pulses on the performance of NELIBS analysis of solid samples. Three different laser sources (a transversely excited atmospheric CO2 laser, a fiber laser and a Nd:YAG laser) with three wavelengths (266 nm, 1064 nm and 10.6 µm) and controllable waveforms were used in the experiments, in which we studied the signal enhancement factor and the time evolution of plasma characteristics. Different size silver, gold and binary NPs were prepared for the experiments using chemical and physical particle generation methodologies and applied to the samples using the droplet deposition method. The NELIBS signal enhancement was studied for several trace elements in steel, aluminum and plastic samples.

AB - In this work, signal enhancement of the original TEA CO2 LIBS setup was studied. Two different methods for copper nanoparticle synthesis were applied. Obtained nanoparticles were characterized and then used for Nanoparticle-Enhanced Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (NELIBS) of plastic polypropylene. Preliminary results have shown that improvement in the analytical sensitivity for the detection of Cr in plastic materials was achieved.
