AB - A visible-light-responsive hybrid material was prepared by surface-modification of γ-Al2O3, an insulator with a bandgap of about 8.7 eV, with 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA), leading to the formation of an interfacial charge transfer (ICT) complex. The microstructural characterization of pristine γ-Al2O3 includes X-ray diffraction analysis, transmission electron microscopy, and nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms. The pristine γ-Al2O3 powder consists of agglomerated rod-like nanoparticles ((2-3) × (15-20) nm, diameter × length) with the large specific surface area (~420 m2/g). An enormous absorption red-shift is observed upon the formation of the ICT complex. The absorption onset of the inorganic-organic hybrid was found to be at 730 nm by diffuse reflection spectroscopy. The photocatalytic performance of prepared samples was thoroughly tested using the decolorization of the organic dye crystal violet (CV) under illumination in different spectral regions and different light intensities. Excitation with UV light leads to complete decolorization of CV, while the degradation kinetics are impeded when a visible light source is used. Also, the increase of UV light intensity induced significantly faster degradation kinetics of CV, while the degradation rates of CV are quite insensitive to the increase of visible light intensity.

AB - Cerium dioxide (CeO2) finds applications in areas such as corrosion protection, solar cells, or catalysis, finding increasing applications in biomedicine. This work reports on surface-modified CeO2 particles in order to tune their applicability in the biomedical field. Stable aqueous CeO2 sol, consisting of 3-4 nm in size crystallites, was synthesized using forced hydrolysis. The coordination of catecholate-type of ligands (catechol, caffeic acid, tiron, and dopamine) to the surface-Ce atoms is followed with the appearance of absorption in the visible spectral range as a consequence of interfacial charge-transfer complex formation. The spectroscopic observations are complemented with the density functional theory calculations using a cluster model. The synthesized samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis, transmission electron microscopy, and nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms. The ζ-potential measurements indicated that the stability of CeO2 sol is preserved upon surface modification. The pristine CeO2 nanoparticles (NPs) are nontoxic against pre-osteoblast cells in the entire studied concentration range (up to 1.5 mM). Hybrid CeO2 NPs, capped with dopamine or caffeic acid, display toxic behavior for concentrations ≥0.17 and 1.5 mM, respectively. On the other hand, surface-modified CeO2 NPs with catechol and tiron promote the proliferation of pre-osteoblast cells. Copyright © 2020 American Chemical Society.

AB - The efficiency of titanate-nanotubes-based photocatalysts towards hydrogen production was studied in the presence of the sacrificial agent, 2-propanol. The highest hydrogen production rate (~120 lmol h 1 g 1 ) was observed over surface-modified titanate nanotubes by 5-amino salicylic acid decorated with nanometer-sized silver nanoparticles. The X-ray diffraction analysis, transmission electron microscopy, nitrogen adsorption–desorption isotherms, and diffuse reflection spectroscopy were applied to characterize the prepared photocatalytic materials. The better photocatalytic performance of inorganic–organic hybrid materials in comparison to the pristine titanate nanotubes is a consequence of their improved light-harvesting ability due to the formation of interfacial charge transfer (ICT) complex, as well as the presence of metallic silver nanoparticles that suppress the recombination of photo-generated charge carriers. The spin trapping EPR experiments under irradiation of prepared photocatalysts with either UV or visible light were used to monitor the appearance of hydroxyl radicals and superoxide radical anions. The generation of superoxide radical anions under visible light irradiation was detected for hybrid materials, but not for the pristine titanate nanotubes. These results are a consequence of enhanced promotion ofelectrons to the conduction band due to extended absorption in visible spectral range in hybrids and support the higher efficiency of hydrogen generation observed for surface-modified titanate nanotubes by 5-amino salicylic acid decorated with silver nanoparticles.

AB - The aim of this study was the development of a non-toxic, biosynthetic antimicrobial agent which selectively acts on only one type of microorganism, and preserves the microbiota. Antimicrobial performance of biosynthesized silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) by horsetail (Equisetum arvense L.) extract was examined against Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli and Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus, as well as yeasts Candida albicans and Saccharomyces boulardii. Also, the cytotoxicity of Ag NPs was examined toward pre-osteoblast cells. The synthetic conditions—concentration of extract, temperature, and pH—were optimized to prepare silver colloids with different particle size distributions and long-term stability. The obtained samples were characterized using transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, and absorption spectroscopy. The smaller-sized Ag NPs (~ 10–20 nm), prepared at a lower temperature (20 °C), showed better antimicrobial performance against E. coli compared to larger ones (~ 40–60 nm), prepared at high temperature (100 °C). On the other hand, both samples did not display any toxic action against bacteria S. aureus, or yeasts C. albicans and S. boulardii. Non-cytotoxic behavior of Ag NPs toward pre-osteoblast cells was observed for the concentrations of silver ≤ 2.25 and ≤ 4.5 mg L−1 for 10–20 and 40–60 nm-sized Ag NPs, respectively. Biosynthesized Ag NPs by horsetail extract display selective toxic action against E. coli at the ecologically acceptable concentration level. © 2019, Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature.

AB - The sorption ability of biogenic hydroxyapatite (BHAP) towards heavy metal ions (Pb, Cu, Ni, Cd, and Zn) is compared with functionalized BHAP powders with caffeic acid (CA) and 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid (3,4-DHBA). The functionalization of the BHAP with either CA or 3,4-DHBA is indicated by the appearance of the colored powders due to the formation of the interfacial charge transfer (ICT) complexes. The detailed characterization of as-prepared and functionalized BHAP samples was performed using transmission electron microscopy, reflection spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and determination of zeta potential. All three sorbents clearly displayed preferential sorption of Pb ions when the total concentration of multi-component equimolar solutions of heavy metal ions is high. It should be emphasized that the sorption capacity of functionalized BHAP with either CA or 3,4-BHAP was found to be higher, up to 60%, compared to as-prepared BHAP without the decrease of selectivity towards Pb ions. © 2019, © 2019 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

AB - Surface modification of Al2O3 powders, prepared using reproducible sol-gel synthetic route with small colorless organic molecules, induces charge transfer complex formation and the appearance of absorption in the visible spectral region. Comprehensive microstructural characterization involving transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, and nitrogen adsorption–desorption isotherms, revealed that γ-crystalline alumina powders consist of mesoporous particles in the size range from 0.1 to 0.3 μm, with specific surface area of 54.8 m2/g, and pore radius between 3 and 4 nm. The attachment of catecholate-type of ligands (catechol, caffeic acid, gallic acid, dopamine and 2,3-dihydroxy naphthalene), salicylate-type of ligands (salicylic acid and 5-amino salicylic acid), and ascorbic acid, to the surface such γ-Al2O3 particles leads to the formation of colored powders and activates their absorption in visible-light spectral region. To the best of our knowledge, similar transformation of an insulator (Al2O3), with the band gap energy of 8.7 eV, into a semiconductor-like hybrid material with tunable optical properties has not been reported in the literature before. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations with periodic boundary conditions were performed in order to estimate the energy gaps of various inorganic/organic hybrids. The calculated values compare well with the experimental data. The good agreement between the calculated and experimentally determined band gaps was found, thus demonstrating predictive ability of the theory when proper model is used.

AB - Size-dependent antimicrobial ability of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) supported by amino-functionalized poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) (poly(GMA-co-EGDMA)) macroporous copolymer was tested against Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli. Inorganic/organic hybrids with distinctly different average sizes of Ag NPs (6.6 and 12.1 nm) were prepared by functionalization of poly(GMA-co-EGDMA) with either 1,8-diaminooctane or ammonia, and consequent reduction of silver ions with amino groups. The transmission electron microscopy (TEM), infrared and UV–Vis reflection spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission measurements were used to characterize synthesized hybrid materials. Time- and concentration-dependent antimicrobial performances of prepared samples revealed higher reduction rates of E. coli when hybrid with smaller in size Ag NPs was used. The difference between rates of reduction of E. coli for different size Ag NPs is becoming more pronounced by decrease of the concentration of silver. POLYM. AB - The antibacterial ability of in situ prepared nanometer-sized silver particles, immobilized in agar-agar films, was studied as a function of the concentration of co-dopant, magnesium ions. Content of inorganic components in hybrid films was determined using inductively coupled plasma optic emission spectroscopy, and found to be low (<2 wt.-%). Morphology of prepared hybrid films, studied by transmission electron microscopy, revealed the presence of non-agglomerated and randomly distributed 10–20 nm silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) within the agar-agar matrices. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy indicated the distinct chemical interaction between Ag NPs and polymer chains. Thermogravimetric analysis, as well as the determination of tensile strength, Young's modulus, and elongation at break showed improvement of thermal stability and mechanical properties of agar-agar matrices upon the incorporation of Ag NPs due to high compatibility between the hydrophilic organic component and inorganic components. The complete microbial reduction of Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureuswas observed for all agar-silver films, while satisfactory results were observed for Gram-negative bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa (≥99.6%). The release of Ag+ ions is suppressed by the increase of the concentration of Mg2+ ions and it was found to be significantly smaller (≤0.24 ppm) than the harmful ecological level (1 ppm). © 2019 Elsevier Ltd

AB - Two gold nanorod-polyaniline (Au-PANI) composites with different contents of Au were prepared by two methods. An ex situ method, in the presence of preformed gold nanorods (AuNRs) and in situ one, when an AuNRs and PANI matrix is produced simultaneously, were used. Both methods were performed in immiscible water/toluene biphasic system as a simple interfacial polymerization process. Optical, structural and morphological characteristics of the formed nanocomposites were identified. It was found that AuNRs are embedded in the conducting emeraldine salt form of PANI. Nanocomposites containing 2.0 and 28.9 wt% of Au were subsequently systematically studied for borohydride oxidation reaction (BOR) for potential application in direct borohydride-peroxide fuel cell (DBPFC). Reaction parameters: number of electrons exchanged, order of reaction and activation energy, were evaluated. Both Au-PANI nanocomposites showed activity for BOR. A laboratory DBPFC was tested reaching specific peak power density of 184 Wg(-1) at 65 degrees C with Au-PANI 1 nanocomposite (containing only 2.0 wt% of Au) as anode.

AB - Antibacterial and antifungal ability of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) supported by functionalized magnetite (Fe 3 O 4 ) with 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) was tested against Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli, Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and yeast Candida albicans. Characterization of materials including transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, and inductively coupled plasma optic emission spectroscopy technique followed each step during the course of nanocomposite preparation. The synthesized powder consists of 30–50 nm in size silver particles surrounded by clusters of smaller (∼10 nm) Fe 3 O 4 particles. The content of silver in the nanocomposite powder was found to be slightly above 40 wt.–%. Concentration-dependent and time-dependent bacterial reduction measurements in dark indicated that use of Ag NPs leads to the complete reduction of E. coli and S. aureus even at the concentration level of silver as low as 40 μg/mL. However, the negligible antifungal ability of synthesized nanocomposite was found against yeast C. albicans in the entire investigated concentration range (0.1-2.0 mg/mL of the nanocomposite, i. e., 40–800 μg/mL of silver). Complete inactivation of E. coli and S. aureus was achieved in five repeated cycles indicated that synthesized nanocomposite can perform under long-run working conditions. From the technological point of view, magnetic separation is the additional advantage of synthesized nanocomposite for potential use as an antibacterial agent. © 2019 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. AB - A serie of novel ZrO2/Polyaniline (PANI) hybrid nanocomposite powders were successfully synthesized by the oxidative polymerization of aniline with ammonium peroxydisulfate (APS) in water, in the presence of ZrO2 nanoparticles. Syntheses were performed at initial ZrO2/aniline mole ratios 50,100 and 150 to produce ZP-50, ZP-100 and ZP-150. The morphological, structural, and optical properties of the synthesized nano composites were studied using Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Raman, UV-Vis and Electron-paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopies. EPR spectra of ZP-50 and ZP-100 nanocomposites showed the presence of intensive peak at the g-values comparable to that for free electrons (2.0023) indicating the presence of oligo/poly (semiquinone radical cations), i.e. polarons as charge carriers in PANI part; ZP-150 showed weak polaron peak of PANI, and peak that can be assigned to defects in zirconia matrix (Zr3+, oxygen vacancies). The monoclinic crystal structure of ZrO2 nanoparticles in all nanocomposites was confirmed by XRD and by Raman spectroscopy. The photocatalytic activities of ZP nanocomposites were evaluated using the photocatalytic degradation of trichlorophenol (TCP) and Rhodamine B model compounds and compared with the activity of bare ZrO2 nanoparticles. Enhanced degradation efficiencies of nanocomposites regarding TCP degradation were observed. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - Antimicrobial performance of silver nanoparticles supported by functionalized hydroxyapatite with 5-aminosalycile acid was tested against Gram-negative bacteria E. coli, Gram-positive bacteria S. aureus and yeast C. albicans. Thorough characterization of materials (electron microscopy, nitrogen adsorption desorption isotherms, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy) followed each step during the course of nanocomposite preparation. Synthesized powder consists of rod-like hydroxyapatite particles (40-60 x 10-20 nm, length x diameter) decorated with nano-sized spherical silver particles whose content in nanocomposite was found to be 1.9 wt.-%. Concentration- and time-dependent bacterial reduction data indicated that use of silver nanoparticles even at concentration as low as 1 mu g mL(-1) lead to complete reduction of both bacteria (E. coli and S. aureus). On the other hand, non-toxic behavior of nanocomposite in broad concentration range (0.05-2.0 mg mL(-1)) was found towards C albicans. Successful inactivation of E. coli and S. aureus in five repeated cycles proved that synthesized nanocomposite can perform under long-run working conditions. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. AB - The antigenotoxic and antioxidative properties of surface-modified TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) with ascorbic acid (AA) were compared with those of constituents (free AA and bare TiO2 NPs). Colloids consisting of the TiO2 NPs with anatase crystal structure were prepared by acidic hydrolysis of TiCl4. The synthesized TiO2 NPs were characterized using transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis. The charge transfer (CT) complex formation between surface Ti atoms and AA is indicated by immediate appearance of red color. Composition and stability constants of CT complex were determined using Jobs method and Banesi-Hildebrand analysis, respectively. The surface structure of CT complex was determined from infra-red spectra of free and bound AA to the surface Ti atoms. The experimental data were supported with quantum chemical calculations based on density functional theory (DFT). The antigenotoxic potential of CT complex was evaluated in leukocytes of whole blood cells in vitro by comet assay method. For evaluation of antioxidant properties, total antioxidant status (TAS) and total oxidant status (TOS) were determined in human serum pool in vitro. The presented results indicate that bare TiO2 NPs have more pronounced antigenotoxic effects in comparison with either surface-modified TiO2 NPs with AA or free AA. No significant differences between the antigenotoxic and antioxidative properties of free and bound AA on the TiO2 NPs were noticed in the investigated concentration range. It seems that surface-modified TiO2 NPs with AA and/or similar compounds can be used to maintain its beneficial activities. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - Detailed study of Al2O3, an insulator with the band gap of about 8.7 eV, and its different organic/inorganic charge transfer complexes with visible-light photo activity is presented. In particular, prepared Al2O3 particles of the size 0.1-0.3 mu m are coated with several organic complexes - the specific details for catecholate- and salicylate-type of ligands are described below - and the light absorption properties and photocatalytic activity of such hybrids are scrutinized and compared with those of other organic/inorganic hybrid materials previously studied. In addition, the obtained experimental results are supported with quantum chemical calculations based on density functional theory. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

All rights reserved.",

AB - Under normal conditions, titanium dioxide does not absorb visible light photons due to large band gap. Nevertheless, when titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) are surface-modified with thiosalicylic acid (TSA), their optical properties are altered owing to the formation of charge transfer complex that initiates absorption in the visible spectral range. Colloidal and sol-gel techniques were used to synthesize uniform TiO2 NPs of different sizes (average diameters in the range 4-15 nm), and effects of their subsequent modification by TSA molecules were compared with effect of modification of commercial Degussa TiO2 powder. Thorough microstructural characterization of TiO2 nanoparticulates was performed including transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, as well as nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms. Optical measurements revealed that all surface-modified TiO2 samples with TSA have similar spectral features independent of their morphological differences, and, more importantly, absorption onset of modified TiO2 samples was found to be red-shifted by 1.0 eV compared to the unmodified ones. The mode of binding between TSA and surface Ti atoms was analyzed by infrared spectroscopy. Finally, the quantum chemical calculations, based on density functional theory, were performed to support optical characterization of surface-modified TiO2 with TSA. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. AB - A simple bottom-up method for the preparation of novel and very efficient photocatalytic nanocomposite system based on carbonized form of polyaniline (PANI) and colloidal TiO2 nanocrystals has been developed. The carbonized PANI/TiO2 nanocomposites were synthesized in a two-step procedure. Firstly, non-carbonized PANI/TiO2 nanocomposites were synthesized by the chemical oxidative polymerization of aniline (ANI) with ammonium peroxydisulfate, in the presence of colloidal TiO2 nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) (d 4.5 nm). Initial [TiO2 NANI] mole ratios were 20, 50, and 80. In the second step, following the polymerization process, the carbonization of PANI/TiO2 nanocomposites was performed by thermal treatment in an inert atmosphere at 650 degrees C. The morphological and structural properties of the carbonized nanocomposites were studied using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. The accomplishment of complete carbonization of PANI in PANI/TiO2 nanocomposites was confirmed by Raman spectroscopy. The appearance of anatase and rutile crystal forms in TiO2 NPs upon carbonization, with mass ratio depending on the initial molar ratio of ANI and TiO2 NPs was revealed by XRD measurements, TEM, SEM and Raman spectroscopy. The photocatalytic activities of carbonized PANI/TiO2 nanocomposites were evaluated following the photocatalytic degradation processes of Rhodamine B and Methylene blue. Carbonized PANI/TiO2 nanocomposites showed higher photocatalytic efficacy compared to bare TiO2 NPs and non-carbonized PANI/TiO2 nanocomposites. The porosity and surface structure of carbonized PANI/TiO2 nanocomposites, as well as crystalline structure of TiO2, affect photocatalytic activity of nanocomposites. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. AB - The biogenic hydroxyapatite (BHAP), obtained by proper treatment of bovine bones, was functionalized with 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA). The coordination of 5-ASA to the surface of BHAP leads to the charge transfer (CT) complex formation accompanied with absorption in visible spectral range. The sorption ability of surface-modified BHAP with 5-ASA (5-ASA/BHAP) for removal of Pb2+ and Cu2+ ions from single-and bi-component solutions was compared with unmodified BHAP. The thorough characterization of both sorbents, BHAP and 5-ASA/BHAP, was performed including X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, as well as diffuse reflection spectroscopy. Sorption kinetics and equilibriums for both ions (Pb2+ and Cu2+) by as-prepared BHAP and 5-ASA/BHAP are quite different. Functionalized sorbent demonstrated faster sorption kinetic and higher maximum sorption capacity for Pb2+ ions from bi-component solutions. From equimolar Pb2+ and Cu2+ mixture with a total concentration of 10-2 mol/L, 66% of Pb2+ was recovered using BHAP, while 97% using 5-ASA/BHAP. These preliminary data indicate potential applicability of properly functionalized hydroxyapatite for selective removal of heavy metal ions from contaminated water.

AB - The mechanical properties of nanocomposites obtained by incorporation of fairly uniform hematite nanorods (alpha-Fe2O3 NRs) into epoxy resin were studied as a function of the content of the inorganic phase. A thorough microstructural characterization of the alpha-Fe2O3 NRs and the nanocomposites was performed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The TEM measurements revealed rod-like morphology of the nanofiller with a uniform size distribution (8.5 nmx170 nm, diameterxlength). High-magnification TEM and AFM measurements indicated agglomeration of alpha-Fe2O3 NRs embedded in the epoxy resin. Stress at break, strain at break, elastic modulus and tensile toughness of the nanocomposites were compared with the data obtained for pure epoxy resin. Significant influence of nanofiller on the mechanical properties of epoxy resin, as well as on the glass transition temperature, could be noticed for samples with low contents of the inorganic phase (up to 1 wt. %).

AB - Gold‒polyaniline (AuPANI) nanocomposite, with granular morphology of PANI and rod‒like Au nanoparticles (NPs) as dominate structure distributed in it, was prepared by interfacial polymerization method in an immiscible water/toluene biphasic system. Simultaneously with the aniline polymerization to polyaniline (PANI) by HAuCl4, as an oxidant, AuNPs are formed. AuPANI composite as green precipitate is collected from aqueous phase. Polyaniline in the composite is in the conductive emeraldine salt form (PANIES), with high amount of Au (28.85 wt %). Nanocomposite showed great electrocatalytic activity towards the electrochemical O2reduction reaction (ORR), with high ORR onset potential and high selectivity for O2reduction to water. This makes it a good candidate for a new class of Pt‒free ORR catalyst.

AB - The effect of cotton fabric pretreatment with biopolymer chitosan (CHT) on deposition of colloidal triangular silver nanoplates was studied. Also, the influence of deposited silver nanoparticles on color and antimicrobial activity of cotton fabrics was evaluated. Characterization of colloidal silver nanoparticles as well as silver nanoparticles deposited on cotton fabrics was performed using electron microscopy (TEM and FESEM), XRD analysis, atomic absorption spectroscopy, UV-Vis absorption, and reflectance spectroscopy. The cotton fabric turned from white to blue color upon deposition of triangular silver nanoplates. Antimicrobial activity of CHT pretreated cotton fabric impregnated with silver nanoparticles was tested against Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli, Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus, and fungi Candida albicans. Deposited silver nanoparticles imparted excellent antimicrobial properties to cotton fabric. The standard sterilization procedure of cotton fabric for antimicrobial activity testing resulted in color change of the fabric from blue to yellow. This color change is most likely consequence of transformation of triangular silver nanoplates into nanodiscs and/or their agglomeration into spheroids.

AB - Triangular silver nanoplates are a type of most-studied noble-metal
nanostructures over the past decade, owing to their special structural
architecture, outstanding plasmonic features across both visible and IR
regions, and catalytic properties for a wide range of applications. Herein, we
used these nanoparticles to deposit on cotton (Co) fabric pretreated with
biopolymer chitosan (CHT) and investigated their antimicrobial activity.
The antimicrobial efficiency of the coated fabrics was evaluated toward
Gram-negative bacteria E. coli, Gram-positive bacteria S. aureus and fungus
C. albicans. It was found that deposited silver nanoparticles imparted
excellent antimicrobial properties to Co fabric.

AB - Gadolinium-oxide nanopowders doped with Yb3+ and Ho3+ ions and co-doped with alkali metal ions (Li+ and Na+) were synthesized via the polymer complex solution method and their up-conversion emission properties are analyzed. Prepared powders were well crystallized in cubic bixbyite structure, without any impurity phases and with an average crystallite size of about 25 nm, as shown by X-ray powder diffraction analysis. No adsorbed species on the surface of nanoparticles were detected by infrared measurements. The particle morphology was analyzed by transmission electron microscopy, which revealed agglomerated crystalline nanoparticles with irregular, polygonal-like shapes, having a size in the range from 30 to 50 nm. Up-conversion emission properties of Gd2O3:Ho3+,Yb3+ nanopowders were evaluated from photoluminescence emission and decay measurements using 980 nm excitation. Two-photon up-conversion processes produced emissions in visible - near infrared spectral range, with the strongest green emission from F-5(4),S-5(2)- GT I-5(8) Ho3+ electronic transition, and weak red and near infrared from F-5(5)- GT I-5(8) and F-5(4), S-5(2) - GT I-5(7) transitions, respectively. In addition, three-photon up-conversion emission was detected in ultra-violet-blue spectral region ((5)G(4)- GT I-5(8), D-3(3)- GT I-5(6) and (5)G(5)- GT I-5(8) transitions). Luminescence measurements were performed on samples with different Ho3+ (0.5 and 1 at%) and Yb3+ (2, 4 and 6 at%) concentrations to find that 0.5 at% of Ho3+ and 2 at% of Yb3+ provides the most intense up-conversion emission. The influence of alkali metal (Li+ and Na+) ion co-doping is studied on the sample that showed the most intense up-conversion emission. Increase in the intensity of up-conversion emission is observed for both Li+ and Na+ co-doping. The effect is more pronounced with Li, where addition of 5 at% of Li+ led to more than one order of magnitude emission enhancement. Alkali metal ion co-doping also significantly improved up-conversion color purity through considerably larger increase of green emission compared to red and near infrared. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V.
